  • The MPEG-4 Audio Lossless Coding (ALS) standard belongs to the family MPEG-4 audio coding standards. In contrast to lossy codecs such as AAC, which merely strive to preserve the subjective audio quality, lossless coding preserves every single bit of the original audio data. The ALS core codec is based on forward-adaptive linear prediction, which combines remarkable compression with low complexity. Additional features include long-term prediction, multichannel coding, and compression of floating-point audio material. This paper describes the basic elements of the ALS codec with a focus on prediction, entropy coding, and related tools and points out the most important applications of this standardized lossless audio format.

  • Object-based audio coding technology has been interested with its expectation to apply in wide areas. Recently, ISO/IEC MPEG has standardized a parametric object audio coding method, the SAOC (Spatial Audio Object Coding). This paper introduces parametric object audio coding techniques with special focus on the MPEG SAOC and also describes several issues and solutions that should be considered for a success in its application.

  • This paper introduces MPEG SAOC (Spatial Audio Object Coding) that has been standardized in MPEG audio subgroup. MPEG SAOC is a trendy parametric coding technology conceptually similar to PS (Parametric Stereo) and the MPEG Surround. SAOC especially parameterizes and codes the spatial information for the object signals comprising a downmixed audio scene and thus lets users render one's preferred scene in an interactive manner.

  • MPEG audio uses the masking effect, high frequency component synthesis based on spectral band replication, and channel expansion based on parametric stereo for efficient compression of audio signals. In this paper, we present an overview of the state-of-the-art channel expansion technology in MPEG audio. We also present technical overviews and application examples to broadcasting services for HE-AAC v.2, MPEG Surround, spatial audio object coding (SAOC), and unified speech and audio coding (USAC) which are MPEG audio codecs based on the channel expansion technology.

  • This paper briefly introduces the current status of MPEG Audio Subgroup activities for standardizing a new audio coding technologies. Currently MPEG Audio Subgroup focused on spatial audio coding tools for compressing multiple audio objects and unified coding tools for presenting the consistence performance on speech and audio signal at the same time. Also a new MAF (MPEG Application Format) for interactive music was introduced at the 84th MPEG meeting.

  • Technology for compressing low-bitrate multichannel audio coding is being standardized owing to the increasing need of consumer for multichannel audio contents. In this paper we propose the sound source location cue coding (SSLCC) for extremely compressing multichannel audio to be suitable at the narrow bandwidth transmission environment. To improve the compression capability of the conventional binaural cue coding(BCC), the SSLCC adopts the virtual source location information (VSLI) as a spatial cue parameter, a symmetric uniform quantizer, and Huffman coder. The objective and subjective assessment results show that the SSLCC provides lower bitrate and better audio quality than conventional BCC method.

  • Parametric stereo coding is a technique to efficiently code a stereo audio signal as a monaural signal plus small amount of parametric overhead to describe the stereo image. The stereo properties are analyzed, encoded, and reinstated in a decoder according to spatial psycho-acoustical principles. However, coding of multichannel audio signal using parametric stereo still requires considerable bit-rate. In this paper, enhanced parametric stereo coding for multichannel audio signal is proposed.

  • Currently, the most important technology is compression methods in the multimedia society. In audio compression, the method using human auditory nervous property is used. This method using psychoacoustical model is applied to perceptual audio coding, because human's audibility is limited. MPEG-II AAC(Advanced Audio Coding) is the most advanced coding scheme that is of benefit to high quality audio coding. The compression ratio is 1.4 times compared with MPEG-I layer-III. In this paper, the vector processor for MDCT/IMDCT(Modified Discrete Cosine Transform /Inverse Modified Discrete Cosine Transform) of MPEG-II AAC is designed.

  • In this paper, MPEG-I Immersive Audio Standardization and related trends are presented. MPEG-I Immersive Audio, which is under the development of standard documents at the exploration stage, can make a user interact with a virtual scene in 6 DoF manner and perceive sounds realistic and matching the user's spatial audio experience in the real world, in VR/AR environments that are expected as killer applications in hyper-connected environments such as 5G/6G. In order to do this, MPEG Audio Working Group has discussed the system architecture and related requirements for the spatial audio experience in VR/AR, audio evaluation platform (AEP) and encoder input format (EIF) for assessing the performance of submitted proponent technologies, and evaluation procedures.

  • This paper proposes an efficiently representing method of spatial cues on multichannel spatial audio coding. The Binaural Cue Coding (BCC) method introduced recently represents multichannel audio signals by means of Inter Channel Level Difference (ICLD) or Source Index (SI). We tried to express more efficiently ICLD and SI information based on Inter Channel Correlation in this paper. We adopt different spatial cues according to ICC and propose a compensation method of empty spectrums created by using SI. We performed a MOS test and measuring spectral distortion. The results show that the proposed method can reduce the bitrate of side information without large degradation of the audio quality.
