  • In many fire emergencies, the auditory fire alarm signals are very important to save the occupant's life. But as the sound insulation of building elements has been improved, it is more difficult for occupant to recognize the fire alarm signals when the audible fire alarm worked. This is the first study to show the sound attenuation of audible fire alarm device in apartments. We measured and analyzed the sound attenuation level in seven units. The result showed that it was not sufficient to detect the sound from the fire alarm device in bedrooms. Whether the fire alarm device worked or not, the differences of sound level in bedrooms were below 1$\sim$10dBA. To give the minimum sound level 60dBA in bedrooms, the proper sound levels from alarm device installed in livingrooms were suggested using computer simulation.

  • A speaker is a system which produces sound through electromechanical operations. It transforms electronic signals into audible sound signals. Almost all speakers are three dimensional. These days, many mobile electronic devices such as mobile electronic devices have become smaller and thinner. A problem with this miniaturization, however, is that the volume of speakers has also decreased. In contrast to conventional three dimensional speakers, we have invented a new type of two dimensional flexible speaker by utilizing the reverse piezoelectric effect.

  • Recently, there are serviced user customized advertisement of various type using smart device. Representative services are advertisement service using light of smart TV screen or audible sound of smart TV to transmit advertisement information. However, those services have to do a specific action of smart device user for advertisement information or need audible audio information of TV contents. To overcome those weakness, therefore, we propose an advertisement method using inaudible sound of speaker based on smart device. This method supports the transfer of advertising content to the smart device user with no additional action or TV audio signal required to access that content. The proposed method used two high frequencies among 18kHz ~ 22kHz of audible frequency range which smart TV can send out. And it generates those frequencies synthesized with audio of TV contents as trigger signal which can send advertisements to smart device. Next, smart device analysis the trigger signal and request advertisement contents related to the signal to server. After then, smart device can show the downloaded contents to user. Because the proposed method uses the high frequencies of sound signals via the inner speaker of the smart device, its main advantage is that it does not affect the audio signal of TV content. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed method, we developed an application to implement it and subsequently carried out an advertisement transmission experiment. The success rate of the transmission experiment was approximately 97%. Based on this result, we believe the proposed method will be a useful technique in introducing a customized user advertising service.

But as the sound insulation of building elements has been improved, it is more difficult for occupant to recognize the fire alarm signals when the fire alarm worked. This is the study to show the sound attenuation of the fire alarm sounder system in apartment buildings. We measured and analyzed the sound attenuation level in 17 units, and the results were compared with the minimum sound level at sleeping area by NFPA(National Fire Protection Association) 72. When only the fire alarm worked in stair hall, the sound levels in bedroom were in the range of $30.6{\sim}42.8dB(A)$ and the differences between sound level and ambient sound level in bedrooms were in the range of $7.1{\sim}13.8dB(A)$. And when the emergency broadcasting device in the livingroom and the fire alarm worked simultaneously, the sound levels in bedrooms were in the range of $54.2{\sim}63.0dBA$. Finally, it was showed that the fire alarm sounder system didn't give a sufficient sound level in bedroom to awake out of sleep.

  • According to the ubiquitous usage of smartphone, so many smartphone applications have been developed, and especially data communications and position measurement technologies without additional equipments have been developed using acoustic signal. But there is a limitation to select the frequency of the acoustic signal due to the smartphone hardware, and there is non-linearity in the electronic circuits in a sound generation devices, the audible sound generated from the speaker is not avoidable. And it causes critical difficulty to the commercial system deployment. In this paper, a simulation technique to calculate the power of the audible acoustic signal by human is applied to several types of acoustic signals to evaluate the loudness. These could be referred when the acoustic communications or positioning systems are designed, for the purposed of inaudible sounding to human.

  • This paper proposes a direction estimation scheme with directional speaker and smart device for evacuation guidance. When there is worst disaster environment filled with smoke and noisy sound, evacuee can not get any information about evacuation routes. The proposed scheme can be used for detecting evacuation routes with audible and inaudible signal from directional speaker. At this point, evacuee can get evacuee guidance by using smartphone application that the proposed scheme is applied. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by experiment with three different types of smart devices in large indoor environment. The purpose of experiment is to detect the direction of transmitted signal from directional speaker. Therefore, The experiment is conducted by analyzing the strength of transmitted signal by distance. The experimental results show that even if the smart device is located up to 20m away from the speaker, it is possible to detect the sending direction of the signal. We confirmed the possibility of the proposed technology in 8kHz and 20kHz signal detection by smart device.

  • Construction workers experience a high rate of fatal incidents from mobile equipment in the industry. One of the major causes is the decline in the acoustic condition of workers due to the constant exposure to construction noise. Previous studies have proposed various ways in which audio sensing and machine learning techniques can be used to track equipment's movement on the construction site but not on the audibility of safety signals. This study develops a novel framework to help automate safety surveillance in the construction site. This is done by detecting the audio sound at a different signal-to-noise ratio of -10db, -5db, 0db, 5db, and 10db to notify the worker of imminent dangers of mobile equipment. The scope of this study is focused on developing a signal processing model to help improve the audible sense of mobile equipment for workers. This study includes three-phase: (a) collect audio data of construction equipment, (b) develop a novel audio-based machine learning model for automated detection of collision hazards to be integrated into intelligent hearing protection devices, and (c) conduct field experiments to investigate the system' efficiency and latency. The outcomes showed that the proposed model detects equipment correctly and can timely notify the workers of hazardous situations.

  • Intermittent or periodic signals with undulating amplitudes of mobile devices cause interference noise at audible frequency to the sound system which is installed nearby. In this regard, it is recently issued that the intermittently transmissions of LTE mobile phones cause the interference noises with sound systems, similar to that of GSM mobile phones. For retaining the immunity to noises, a national regulation KN20 suggests a 1 kHz AM 80 % and a CDMA modulation signal as reference signals for immunity test of sound and television broadcast receiver. In this paper, the effects of interference noises of AM and CDMA are compared with those of GSM and LTE, and the improvement of reference signal for national immunity test of sound systems is suggested. It is recommended to delete the CDMA modulation signal from reference signals for immunity test because it hardly cause interference noise with sound systems. On the other hand, it is desirable to select the modulation signal of LTE instead of CDMA as a reference signal for immunity test of sound system and television broadcast receiver because many people use the LTE service and it is analysed that the LTE signal causes considerable interference noises.

  • In this paper, a new interpolation model for the head related transfer function (HRTF) was proposed. In the method herein, we assume that the impulse response of the HRTF for each azimuth angle is given by linear interpolation of the time-delayed neighboring impulse responses of HRTFs. The time delay of the HRTF for each azimuth angle is given by sum of the sound wave propagation time from the ears to the sound source, which can be estimated by using azimuth angle, the physical shape of the underlying head and the distance between the head and sound source, and the refinement time yielding the minimum mean square error. Moreover, in the proposed model, the interpolation intervals were not fixed but varied, which were determined by minimizing the total number of HRTFs while the synthesized signals have no perceptual difference from the original signals in terms of sound location. To validate the usefulness of the proposed interpolation model, the proposed model was applied to the several HRTFs that were obtained from one dummy-head and three human heads. We used the HRTFs that have 5 degree azimuth angle resolution at 0 degree elevation (horizontal plane). The experimental results showed that using only $30\sim40%$ of the original HRTFs were sufficient for producing the signals that have no audible differences from the original ones in terms of sound location.
