  • In this study, high school students' environmental conceptions and attitudes, and their relationships with affective variables (self-esteem, enjoyment of science lesson, and leisure interest in science) were investigated. Students' environmental conceptions were found to be low, and male students' environmental conceptions were higher than female students. However, the environmental attitudes of female students were more positive than those of male students. There were no differences between male and female students in the ecocentric attitudes, but male students had more egocentric attitudes than female students. Students of higher prior science achievement level possessed higher level of environmental conceptions than their counterparts. Among the affective variables studied, leisure interest in science was significantly correlated with environmental attitudes.

  • The object of this study was to examine attitudes and knowledge of Korean dieticians about functional foods. We investigated their perceived knowledge and their attitudes regarding risks versus benefits, and recommendation about the use of functional foods; as well as their frequency of personal use, and the educational supports and training needs of dieticians. We developed a questionnaire to assess the dieticians' attitudes related to functional foods. This questionnaire was used for characterizing functional food-related attitudes on the basis of factor and reliability analysis in the following study. The questionnaires were distributed to 802 practicing dieticians working in Daegu and Gyeongsangbukdo. A total of 244 respondents (mean age $34\pm5.7$ years) returned the completed questionnaires through online surveys. Descriptive statistics and ANOV A were used to analyze data. Fewer than $2\%$ of dieticians claimed themselves to be knowledgeable about functional foods, more than $79\%$ consumed functional foods more than once a week, and $88\%$ of dieticians expressed an interest in receiving training about functional foods. Dieticians had favorable attitudes about the rewards from functional foods but were not confident about the safety and usage recommedation of these foods. The level of knowledge and educational support at their universities about functional foods affected the dieticians' attitudes regarding the rewards from and recommendation about the use of functional foods. These results suggest a need for additional educational opportunities to facilitate a better understanding of the risks and benefits of functional foods and their proper usage. Dietetics professionals must adapt to changes in health practices through effective educational programs integrating sufficient knowledge about functional foods.

  • Purpose: This correlational study was performed to identify the impacts of maternal child rearing attitudes on the menstrual attitudes and the determinants of positive menstrual attitudes in female middle school students. Methods: With convenience sampling, 198 middle school female students were recruited living in one major city and its surrounding areas in Korea. Data was collected using a self administered questionnaire including menstrual attitudes and maternal child rearing attitudes from April 1 to July 15, 2008. Results: Among the Maternal child rearing attitudes, affectionate, achievement oriented and rational attitudes had positive correlations to a positive menstrual attitude, and an autonomous attitude had a negative correlation to a negative menstrual attitude. As determinants of positive menstrual attitudes, feeling of menarche, mother's response at first menstruation, and rational maternal child rearing attitudes were delineated and their explained variance for a positive menstrual attitude was 18.5%. There was no difference on menstrual attitudes by K clustering in terms of maternal child rearing attitudes. Conclusion: These results support the critical role of the mother. Especially desirable maternal child rearing attitudes in relation to a positive menstrual attitude would be affectionate, achievement oriented and rational for early adolescent girls. In further studies, considerations are needed for menstruation related education and research for early adolescents and active involvement of the mother & daughter together.

  • The purpose of this study was to test the relationship between health status and bathing. Method: The population of this study consisted of females, above age 20 in urban areas in order to control the effects of extraneous variables, resident areas, gender, and age. Four hundred and twenty-eight (428) women were interviewed with a structured questionnaire. Medical Outcomes Study Short Form (SF)-36 Health Survey assessed individual health status. Bathingbehavior and attitudes toward bath have been measured with questionnaires designed by the authors. Result: The most popular bathing type was shower (46.8%). The preferred type of bath was related to health status. A common purpose of the tub-bath was relieving fatigue and hygiene, but the other purposes were different on the subjects health status. Persons with low health status took frequently tub-baths for health. Attitudes toward bath were related to health status. Women with low scores in physical health recognized more physical effects of bath than psychological effects or hygenic effects. Conclusion: Bathing included physical and psychological dimensions and was related to health status.

  • The purpose of this study is to construct a structural equation model and to analyze causal relationships among variables related to attitudes to science using structural equation modeling(SEM) with LISREL VII. The sample consisted of 483 10th grade boys from a general high school in Pusan, Korea. The questionnaires (ABC-attitude scale: affection, behavioral intention, cognition scale of attitude towards science) were developed by the researcher through a pilot study. And other instruments have modified previous ones. Five instruments were used in this study: GALT(group assessment of logical thinking), MTSlS(modified test of science inquiry skill), ABC-attitude scale, MSAS(modified scientific attitude scale), CSAT(common science achievement test). Structural equation modeling with LISREL VII($J\ddot{o}reskog$ & $S\ddot{o}rbom,$ 1993) was employed to estimate the causal inferences about hypothesized relationships among observed data sets. Three competing models consisted of five latent variable(scientific thinking ability, science inquiry skill, attitude towards science, scientific attitude, science achievement) - lP(inquiry preceding) model, AP(attitude preceding) model and AM(attitude mediating) model - were developed. Among these competing models, IP model satisfied the observed data sets. The causal relationships among "attitudes to science" and other latent variables were reliably identified. According to the results of the present study, science inquiry skill was the most significant variable that can predict science achievement. But scientific thinking ability has not directly influenced science achievement. This study suggests that inquiry based teaching-learning processes should be offered to students for improvement of science achievement. At the same time, it seems to be important to develop positive attitude towards science. Understanding of relationships among variables related to attitudes to science will be helpful to the development of science curriculum and to the design of science teaching and learning process. LISREL has been recognized as a useful approach in testing a SEM. However, in this study, LISREL approach was estimated as much more useful method for research design.

  • Through the systematic analysis on articles about the environment in newspapers, the news reports were considered as effective materials, so after being reconstructed, they were used as learning materials in a lesson on environment contamination which is newly introduced in Earth Science I from the 2009 curriculum revision. To examine students' attitude toward science, before and after NIE application to the students, Test of Science Related Attitudes(TOSRA) as a test tool was carried out which was composed of 7 categories - four optional questionnaires for each category, 28 in total were used. The result was as follows: in a pretest, based upon the average scores by factors the factors ranked from the highest to the lowest as follows: the social meaning of science, the acceptance of the scientific attitude, the commonness of a scientist, the attitude to scientific exploration, the pleasure in science class, the vocational interest in science, the concern over science as a hobby, and in posttest, their ranking as follows: the acceptance of the scientific attitude, the pleasure in science class, the commonness of a scientist, the social meaning of science, the attitude to scientific exploration, the vocational interest in science, the concern over science as a hobby. Also they were all statistically significant at a significant level p<0.05. However, the test revealed that there were some negative effects on the social meaning of science and the attitude to scientific exploration and therefore it is judged that in order to overcome those influences, some bright articles about solving the environment contamination should be applied to the lessons and be complemented effectively by experiments and various media: NIE as well as science magazines, data from Internet search and treatises on science.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out eco-friendly attitude and level of knowledge about environment of pre-service elementary teachers and find relationship between these. In this study, we investigate and analyse with surveys about eco-friendly attitudes and environmental knowledge questionnaire targeting the 2nd semester of 2013 32 people of fast stream class 2nd grade. Also, we analyzed correlation between environmental knowledge and the test results of eco-friendly attitudes. Results for the analysis are as follows. First, pre-service elementary teachers' average of eco-friendly attitudes test result is 'cognitive area(60.22)> definitional area(53.69)> behavioral area(52.72)'. These results are re-service elementary teachers are knowledgeable about the environment, but they are passive at the execution act about environment. Second, the average of pre-service elementary teachers' environmental knowledge result is the highest to the protect the environment, for the average(26.25). It is interpreted that they acquired the most the knowledge related to the conservation of the environment. Third, It is no significant correlation between pre-service elementary teachers' eco-friendly attitudes and environmental knowledge. It means that although they acquired a lot of knowledge related to the environment, it is not affected to environmental friendly attitude putting ideas into action about environment.

  • This study was conducted to investigate nutritional knowledge, dietary attitudes, and dietary behaviors of adult women, and to examine if these characteristics were different by acne status. Subjects were 106 adult women residing in Seoul recruited from clients and employers at skin care centers, and housewives from apartment complexes. Surrey instrument was adapted or modified based on literature review and dietary intakes were assessed using 24-hour recalls for two days and CAN-pro. All data was statistically analyzed using x$^2$test and ANOVA. When examined by acne status, 41.5% of subjects were categorized into acne group, 20.8% were as ex-acne group, and 37.7% as no-acne group. Parental experience of acne was significantly related to acne status(p〈 0.01). Education, employmental status, and smoking or drinking status were not related to acne status. Subjects had a moderate level of nutritional knowledge(72.7 point) and the nutritional knowledge store was not significantly different by acne status. When examined by individual items, the groups showed significant difference on the items regarding vitamin C and necessity of carbohydrates(p 〈 0.05). Subjects showed favorable dietary attitudes. Although the acne group showed more favorable attitudes on the importance of nutrition on acne, the overall dietary attitudes of the acne group were not significantly different from the ex-acne group or no-acne group. Similarly only small differences were noticed in dietary behaviors or nutrient intakes by acne status. Cholesterol consumption was hitgher in the no-acne group than in the acne group or ex-acne group(p 〈 0.01). The intakes of energy, iron, and calcium was much below the RDA in three groups. Although there were not many significant differences in nutritional knowledge, dietary attitudes, and dietary behaviors by acne status, this study provided some baseline information regarding study variables by acne status.
