Subjective Health Status, Attitude toward Death and Spiritual Well-being of Nurses (간호사의 주관적 건강상태, 죽음에 대한 태도 및 영적 안녕)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the level and correlation of subjective health status, attitude toward death and spiritual well-being of nurses. The subjects were 338 nurses in two university general hospitals located in Seoul and Gyeonggi area. Data were collected using a structuralize questionnaires regarding subjective health status, attitude toward death and spiritual well-being from March to May in 2013. Data were processed with SAS for Windows statistics program. For analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficients were performed. Nurses had negative attitudes toward death according to age, marital status, years of employment and job title, while spiritual well-being was different according to age, marital status, religion, education, years of engagement in clinical works, department, and job title. The higher subjective health of nurses was, the more positive their attitudes toward death were. The higher subjective heath of nurses was and the more positive their attitudes toward death were, the higher their spiritual well-being was. This study identified the relationship between the attitudes toward death and spiritual well-being and the health status subjectively recognised by nurses, and it is meaningful in that this study prepared basic data for development of an education program for spiritual nursing care or terminal care.

The Effect of Cancer Patients' Knowledge of Advanced Directives and Perception of Good Death on Attitude toward Withdrawal of Life-Sustaining Treatment (암환자의 사전연명의료의향서 지식과 좋은 죽음 인식이 연명의료중단 태도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to identify the effects of knowledge of Advance Directives (AD) and the patient's perception of a peaceful death on their attitude toward the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment and to provide basic data for the development of a nursing intervention program for activating self-determination in the withdrawal of life-sustaining support of patients. The subjects were 167 adult cancer patients who received outpatient or inpatient treatment, from September 15, 2019, to March 30, 2020. The data was analyzed by mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression by using SPSS 21.0. From the results, it was observed that the knowledge of AD was 8.87±2.46 out of 12, perception of a peaceful death was 2.87±0.42 out of 4, and attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment was 3.46±0.49 out of 5. There was a positive correlation between knowledge of AD, perception of a peaceful death, and their attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment. The influencing variables were the knowledge of AD, perception of a peaceful death, discussion with family on withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment, and explanation power was 16.0% (F=10.355, p<.001). Therefore, it is necessary to develop a program that would improve the perception of a peaceful death, increase the knowledge of AD to improve the patients' attitude toward the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment. An intervention to assist a discussion between the patients and their families in advance would also be useful.

Convergent relationship between spiritual well-being, spiritual nursing competence, and attitude toward death of nursing students (간호대학생의 영적안녕감, 영적간호역량, 죽음에 대한 태도와의 융합적 관계)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the degree of spiritual well-being, spiritual nursing competency, and attitude toward death of nursing students at Christian universities and to find out the relevance and influence between variables. The subjects of the study were conveniently sampled 185 nursing college students located in C City, and data analysis was conducted using the SPSS 22.0 program to conduct t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's Correction Coefficient. As a result, religious well-being was significantly higher in students with very satisfied major satisfaction, and spiritual nursing competence was higher in girls with high grades, and students with high major satisfaction. Attitudes toward death were high in male students, showing significant results, and spiritual well-being showed a significant positive correlation between spiritual nursing competence and attitude toward death. Therefore, an institutional approach is needed to strengthen spiritual well-being and develop a curriculum so that it can help provide spiritual health to nursing subjects.

Operation Room Nurses' Ethical Value regarding Their Attitude and Meaning of Life about Organ Transplantation in Brain Death (뇌사자 장기이식에 대한 수술실 간호사의 태도와 삶의 의미가 간호윤리 가치에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of study was to describe operation room nurses' ethical values in relationship to the attitude and meaning of life toward organ transplantation in brain death. Methods: This study used a descriptive correlational survey design. Participants were 174 nurses who had attended to organ transplantation surgery in brain death more than once. Data were collected from September 1 to 11, 2015 and were analyzed using independent t-test, ANOVA, $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and hierarchical multiple regression with SPSS 22.0. Results: Educational level, attitude on organ transplantation in brain death, and meaning of life were significant variables predicting the level of nursing ethical value, accounting for 82.6% of the variability. Conclusion: Continued education and self-development programs should be encouraged for operating room nurses to establish professional nursing ethics as well as positive meaning of life and attitude toward the organ transplantation in brain death.

A study on the influence of the preparative education on the Elderly's attitude for death (노인의 죽음 준비교육이 죽음의 불안도에 미치는 요인분석 연구)

  • This study attempt to analyze the influence of the preliminary education on the Elderly's attitude for death and to present basic data for the death-preliminary education. The data were collected by administerial the Questionnaire interview with 169 the elderly who was 200 the elderly over 60 year old in silver colleges. The Questions was consists the awareness recognition of death, character, attitudes toward for death. The statistical methods used for the analysis were t-test, factor analysis. The results were the follows. There was no statistically significant relations between the fear of death and the general characteristics the elderly, but the old women felt more anxiety than old men. Especially, more aged, unhealthy the elderly felt it more and the lower educated or the single felt it more severely. The change in the attitude for death: They attitude for death was considerably changed after the preliminary education. Fears and anxiety about death were more reduced and the inevitability of death was accepted positively. This result showed the influence of the preliminary death education had positive affliction of the elderly's attitude for death. Accordingly, with the practice of the preliminary education we can release the elderly from the fear for death and guide them to live meaningly.

Factors Influencing Nurses' Attitudes Toward Terminal Care (간호사의 임종간호 태도에 미치는 영향요인)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify the extent to which nurses' death perceptions, death anxiety, and stress associated with terminal care affects their attitudes toward terminal care. Method : A total of 214 nurses were asked questions about characteristics, death perceptions, death anxiety, stress associated with end-of-life care, and terminal care attitudes, using structured questionnaires. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé's test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Results : Factors influencing terminal care attitudes in participants were positive meaning associated with death, respect for life, final education, end-of-life nursing education experiences, stress associated with end-of-life care, death anxiety, and position. These factors explained 38.7% of variance in participants' terminal care attitudes (F=20.18, p<.001). Conclusion : In order for nurses to have a positive attitude toward terminal care, it is necessary to raise positive awareness about death and respect for life, and it is necessary to develop various educational programs and strengthen their capacity through continuous education.

Factors Influencing Will of Brain Death Organ Donation among University Students (대학생의 뇌사자 장기기증 의도에 영향을 미치는 요인+)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing factors university students' will toward brain death organ donation. Methods: Data from 250 students were collected using a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using a chi-squared test, independent t-test, and binary logistic regression with the SPSS 23.0 program. Results: Factors influencing will of brain death organ donation were announcing to decision to engage in brain death donation(Confidence interval(CI)=3.02-32.14, p<.001), experience of having discussed brain death organ donation with others(CI=1.26-5.72, p=.011), intention to make advance directives(ADs)(CI=1.90-9.57., p<.001), and positive attitude toward ADs(CI=1.05-1.29, p=.004). Conclusions: The most important factors affecting the will of brain death organ donation were making an informed decision regarding organ donation, intending to make an AD, having engaged in organ donation conversation, and a positive attitude toward ADs.

The Influence of Hospice Volunteering and Death Education on High School Students' Attitude toward Death and Meaning of Life (고등학생의 호스피스자원봉사 경험자와 비경험자의 죽음에 대한 태도와 삶의 의미 비교)

  • Purpose: This descriptive research was carried out to identify how high school students' attitude to death and their meaning of life were affected by hospice volunteering and death education. Methods: This study is based on a structured questionnaire designed for 180 high school students who were given death education while doing volunteer work at non-profit hospice hospitals and another 288 high school students not doing any hospice volunteer work. The collected data was processed by the SPSS 20.0 program and then analyzed by $x^2$ test, t-test and ANOVA test. Results: High school students' attitude to death and their meaning of life showed significant differences depending on whether or not they had volunteered at hospice hospitals. The group with hospice volunteering experience tended to be more negative about death and have a higher meaning of life compared to those without hospice volunteering experience. Students with proper hospice recognition made up 52.4%, those who expressed hopes to receive hospice-care themselves if necessary accounted for 70.5%, and those who said they would like to take care of their family members either at home or at a hospice center if any of them got incurably sick comprised 59.0%. Those who thought dignified death is to be with one's family or any other meaningful person were 47.6% and 18.5% of the students thought that 'thinking they had led a meaningful life' was the core of a dignified death. Conclusion: Given the above results, it became clear that hospice volunteering and death education can affect high school students' meaning of life and their attitudes toward death.

Nursing Students' Attitude toward Death and Perception on Hospice Care (일부 간호학생의 죽음 관련 태도와 호스피스인식에 대한 실태조사)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine nursing students' attitude toward death and perception on hospice care. Methods: The survey was performed with 277 nursing students in three universities in Daegu and Busan. The data was collected by questionnaires and were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Regarding the attitude on death, 93.9% of the subjects had ever thought about death. They worried about separation and sadness with family (39.7%). About half (48.7%) of the subjects considered death as a final process of the life. With regard to the perception of hospice, 93% of the subjects heard about hospice through books or nursing courses (83.8%). The best hospice management institution was considered the one run by religious groups or non-profit organizations with government support (33.9%). Ideal model of hospice setting in Korea was hospital or institution specialized with hospice care (47.7%). The barriers the subjects thought to effective hospice care in Korea was the lack of the public consensus on the need for hospice program (37.9%). The average perceptions about the purpose of hospice care was 4.38, whereas, the average of the need of hospice care was 4.06. Conclusion: The findings of the study provides the basis for expanding nursing practice and education related to hospice care.

The effects of death orientation and attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment on awareness of biomedical ethics among paramedic students

  • This study was conducted to identify the effects of the degree of death orientation, attitudes toward withdrawing life-sustaining treatment, and awareness of biomedical ethics on paramedic students' own biomedical ethics. The participants of this study were 228 paramedic students from a college located in D city. Data were collected from April to June 2019 through a self-report questionnaire. There was a positive correlation between awareness of biomedical ethics and attitude toward withdrawing life-sustaining treatment (r=.63, p<.001). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the factors affecting students' awareness of biomedical ethics were religion (β=.12, p=.018) and their attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment (β=.61, p<.001), with an explanatory power of 41.0%. Educational programs must focus on attitudes toward withdrawing life-sustaining treatment to improve paramedic students' awareness of biomedical ethics.
