This study analysed the sensitivity of the attenuation functions for the seismic hazard estimation. For the seismic hazard estimation, this study used HAZUS software, which is developed originally by FEMA(USA). The scenario earthquake ($M_w=6.0$) is located the Hongsung area, where one of the recent macro earthquakes occurred in 1978. The area for seismic hazard estimation is assumed to be Boryung city in Choongnam-do. Three attenuation functions were applied for the sensitivity analysis. The results show that the attenuation functions have much influences on the seismic hazard on the various types of buildings. Therefore the attenuation function is very important factor for the seismic hazard estimation.

Background: Hearing protection devices (HPDs) are often used in the workplace to prevent hearing damage caused by noise. However, a factor that can lead to hearing loss in the workplace is improper HPD fitting, and the previous literature has shown that instructing workers on how to properly insert their HPDs can make a significant difference in the degree of attenuation. Methods: Two studies were completed on a total of 33 Hydro One workers. A FitCheck Solo field attenuation estimation system was used to measure the personal attenuation rating (PAR) before and after providing one-on-one fitting instructions. In addition, external ear canal diameters were measured, and a questionnaire with items related to frequency of use, confidence, and discomfort was administered. Results: Training led to an improvement in HPD attenuation, particularly for participants with poorer PARs before training. The questionnaire results indicated that much HPD discomfort is caused by heat, humidity, and communication difficulties. External ear canal asymmetry did not appear to significantly influence the measured PAR. Conclusion: In accordance with the previous literature, our studies suggest that one-on-one instruction is an effective training method for HPD use. Addressing discomfort issues from heat, humidity, and communication issues could help to improve the use of HPDs in the workplace. Further research into the effects of canal asymmetry on the PAR is needed.

The engineering of satellite communication systems at frequencies above 10GHz requires a method for estimating rain-caused outage probabilities on the earth-satellite path. A procedure for predicting a rain attenuation distribution from a point rainfall rate distribution is, therefore, needed. In order to predict rain attenuation on the satellite link, several prediction models such as ITU-R, Global, SAM, DAH model, have been developed and used at a particular propagation condition, they may not be appropriate to a propagation condition in Korean territory. In this paper, a new rain attenuation prediction method appropriate to a propagation condition in Korea is introduced. Based on the results from ETRI measurements, a new method has been derived for an empirical approach with an identification on the horizontal correction factor as in current ITU-R method, and the vertical correction factor has been suggested with decreasing power law as a function of rainfall rate. This proposed model uses the entire rainfall rate distribution as input to the model, while the ITU-R and DAH model approaches only use a single 0.01% annual rainfall rate and assume that the attenuation at other probability levels can be determined from that single point distribution. This new model was compared with several world-wide prediction models. Based on the analysis, we can easily know the importance of the model choice to predict rain attenuation for a particular location in the radio communication system design.

This paper aims to suggest the water curtain installation guideline for prevention of fire spread. The water curtain systems play a role in preventing fire spread which is caused by fire flames and radiation heat release from a fire source. The radiation attenuation ratio is affected by the water droplet size, vertical distance from the nozzle and flow rate. This study suggests the water curtain installation guideline as follows : (1) Investigation of a reference store array (2) Calculation of the number of drencher heads (3) Review of the relationship between droplet size and attenuation factor depending on the height of the drencher head (4) Review of a drencher head array and spray overlapping. The reference traditional market in which a fire compartment is installed using a water curtain can be predicted to have a radiation attenuation ratio of 50%.

In this paper, the EPICS2017 photoatomic database was used to evaluate the photon mass attenuation coefficients and buildup factors of soils collected at different depths in the Philippine islands. The extraction and interpolation of the library was accomplished at the recommended linear-linear scales to obtain the incoherent and total cross section and mass attenuation coefficient. The buildup factors were evaluated using the G-P fitting method in ANSI/ANS-6.4.3. An agreement was achieved between XCOM, MCNP5, and EPICS2017 for the calculated mass attenuation coefficient values. The buildup factors were reported at several penetration depths within the standard energy grid. The highest values of both buildup factor classifications were found in the energy range between 100 and 400 keV where incoherent scattering interaction probabilities are predominant, and least at the region of predominant photoionization events. The buildup factors were examined as a function of different soil silica contents. The soil samples with larger silica concentrations were found to have higher buildup factor values and hence lower shielding characteristics, while conversely, those with the least silica contents have increased shielding characteristics brought by the increased proportions of the abundant heavier oxides.
Excellent thermal neutron absorption performance of boron expands the potential use of boron rich slag to prepare epoxy resin matrix nuclear shielding composites. However, shielding attenuation behaviors and mechanism of the composites against gamma rays are unclear. Based on the radiation protection theory, Phy-X/PSD, XCOM, and 60Co gamma ray source were integrated to obtain the shielding parameters of boron rich slag/epoxy resin composites at 0.015-15 MeV, which include mass attenuation coefficient (µt), linear attenuation coefficient (µ), half value thickness layer (HVL), electron density (Neff), effective atomic number (Zeff), exposure buildup factor (EBF) and exposure absorption buildup factor (EABF).µt, µ, HVL, Neff, Zeff, EBF and EABF are 0.02-7 cm2/g, 0.04-17 cm-1, 0.045-20 cm, 5-14, 3 × 1023-8 × 1023 electron/g, 0-2000, and 0-3500. Shielding performance is BS4, BS3, BS3, BS1 in descending order, but worse than ordinary concrete. µ and HVL of BS1-BS4 for 60Co gamma ray is 0.095-0.110 cm-1 and 6.3-7.2 cm. Shielding mechanism is main interactions for attenuation gamma ray by BS1-BS4 are elements with higher content or higher atomic number via Photoelectric Absorption at low energy range, and elements with higher content via Compton Scattering and Pair Production in Nuclear Field at middle and higher energy range.
Glial cells are activated in neuropathy and play a key role in hyperalgesia and allodynia. This study was performed to determine whether minocycline could attenuate heat hyperalgesia and mechanical allodynia, and how glial cell activation and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kappaB) were regulated by minocycline in a model of chronic constriction of sciatic nerve (CCl). When minocycline (50 mg/kg, oral) was daily administered from 1 day before to 9 days after ligation, heat hyperalgesia and mechanical allodynia were attenuated. Furthermore, when minocycline treatment was initiated 1 or 3 days after ligation, attenuation of the hypersensitive behavior was still robust. However, the effect of attenuation was less when minocycline was started from day 5. In order to elucidate the mechanism of pain attenuation by minocycline, we examined the changes of glia and NF-kappaB, and found that attenuated hyperalgesia and allodynia by minocycline was accompanied by reduced microglial activation. Furthermore, the number of NF-kappaB immunoreactive cells increased after CCI treatment and this increase was attenuated by minocycline. We also observed translocation of NF-kappaB into the nuclei of activated glial cells. These results suggest that minocycline inhibits activation of glial cells and NF-kappaB, thereby attenuating the development of behavioral hypersensitivity to stimuli.
As a transition region between ocean and land, coastal wetlands are significant ecosystems that maintain water quality, provide natural habitat for a variety of species, and slow down erosion. The energy of coastal waves and storm surges are reduced by vegetation cover, which also helps to maintain wetlands through increased sediment deposition. Wave attenuation by vegetation is a highly dynamic process and its quantification is important for understanding shore protection and modeling coastal hydrodynamics. In this study, laboratory experiments were used to quantify wave attenuation as a function of vegetation type as well as wave conditions. Wave attenuation characteristics were investigated under regular waves for rigid model vegetation. Laboratory hydraulic test and numerical analysis were conducted to investigate regular wave attenuation through emergent vegetation with wave steepness ak and relative water depth kh. The normalized wave attenuation was analyzed to the decay equation of Dalrymple et al.(1984) to determine the vegetation transmission coefficients, damping factor and drag coefficients. It was found that drag coefficient was better correlated to Keulegan-Carpenter number than Reynolds number and that the damping increased as wave steepness increased.
Methane hydrates are considered important in terms of their effect on global warming and as potential energy resources. Now, mainly the presence of a BSR and seismic velocity are used for estimation of methane hydrate concentration in the seismic reflection survey. But recent studies on seismic attenuation show that it can be used also to estimate methane hydrates concentration. In this study, we tried to estimate attenuation from 2D seismic reflection data acquired at Nankai Trough in Japan and analyzed attenuation properties in methane hydrate bearing sediments. Seismic attenuation estimated by QVO method in an offset range $125{\sim}1,575m$. We observed high attenuation in methane hydrate bearing sediments over BSR in a frequency range of 30-70Hz. Thus, this result demonstrates that seismic reflection wave within this frequency range are affected significantly by the existence of methane hydrate concentration zone.

In order to estimate attenuation characteristics, nonparametric model is used. Evaluation of this model requires suites of average spectral amplitude data as a function of distance without adopting any assumed parametric forms. Values of Quality factor, Q were estimated for individual frequencies by matrix inversion of S wave amplitude spectra for 21 records of 8 small and intermediate earthquakes (2.7$(1/r)^{1/2}$. The best models for 1/Q values were found to be 0.000453+0.001851/f and 0.000451+0.009261/f, respectively. This results can be compared to the conventional functional form of Q=$af^{b}$ and be used to estimate source spectra and site response.
