To identify irradiated foods, studies have been carried out with electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy on bone containing foods, such as chicken, pork, and beef. Bones cleaned, pieced and dried were irradiated with doses of 0, 1, 3, 5 kGys using a $Co^{60}$ irradiator. The bones were placed in a resonant quartz tube with an internal diameter of about 4.0 mm within the Bruker Win-ESR spectrometer, and the intensity of the ESR signal could be quantified by double integration of the first derivative spectrum. The irradiated bone presented an asymmetric absorption in shape, different from that of an unirradiated one. It could be possible to detect at doses lower than 1 kGy below the dose employed commercially (3 kGy) in the case of irradiated chicken bone. The signal intensity was greatest in the beef bone, intermediate in the pork bone and lowest in the chicken bone; it was normally lower for smaller animals than for larger species, and small variations were observed between samples of the same species. The intensity of the signal induced in bones increased linearly with irradiation doses in the range of 1.0 kGy to 5.0 kGy, and it was possible to distinguish between samples given low and high doses of irradiation. The signal stability for 6 weeks made them ideal for the quick and easy identification of irradiated meats.
To study the distribution and the behavior of trace metals in Kwangyang Bay, surface water samples were collected four times from August 1997 to May 1998 and were analyzed for trace metals (Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Zn) by Atomic Absorption Spectrometer and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer. Dissolved Co and Fe concentrations were comparatively high near the Seomjin River mouth. Particulate trace metal contents were relatively high near the Sueochun River mouth and near the Yeochun industrial complex. Distribution coefficients ($K_d$; $Lkg^1$) between dissolved and particulate phases of Fe, Pb, Co, Zn, Ni, Cu and Cd were $1.67{\times}10^8$, $1.37{\times}10^6$, $7.25{\times}10^5$, $4.43{\times}10^5$, $1.39{\times}10^5$, $9.1{\times}10^4$ and $1.8{\times}10^4$, respectively. In Kwangyang Bay, particulate trace-metal concentrations were as high as dissolved ones and showed seasonal and geographic variations.
Heavy metal accumulation levels of inhabitant fish, Hemibarbus labeo in Andong and Imha reservoirs were analyzed using an inductively coupled plasma spectrometer and atomic absorption spectrometer. Heavy metal contents of H. labeo from Andong reservoir were higher than those from Imha reservoir. Likewise, relative high contents of As, Cd and Hg were detected in the tissues from Andong reservoir. Among the heavy metals, Al, As and Fe were detected with high concentration in the gill tissues but not in the muscle tissues. Also, the average content of Zn was almost similar in all tissues. In addition, high accumulated level of Al, Cr, Cu and Mn were detected in gill and kidney tissues of H. labeo from Andong reservoir. As a result, the heavy metal contents from the inhabitant fishes, H. labeo, in Andong reservoir showed higher than those in Imha reservoir. We propose that heavy metal contamination in water and in inhabitated fishes is caused from various metals derived from water and sediments in water environment of Andong reservoir.

There are few studies on toxic metals in crustaceans available in Korea. Therefore, this study was conducted to estimate content of toxic metals in crustaceans (n=58). Samples were digested with acids and analysed by inductively coupled plasma spectrometer (ICP) or atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS) for lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic (As). Mercury (Hg) contents were determined using mercury analyzer. Toxic metal contents [minimum-maximum (mean), mg/kg] in crustaceans were as follows; Hg 0.004-0.28 (0.06), Pb ND-0.31 (0.03), Cd 0.003-0.92 (0.14), and As 0.01-35.9 (6.63). Our results demonstrated that metal contents in crustaceans on Korean markets were similar to those reported in other countries. Our average weekly intakes of Pb, Cd, and Hg from crustaceans were lower than 1% of Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intakes (PTWI) set by Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee for food safety evaluation.

Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the accuracy and precision of airborne metal analysis using polyvinyl chloride(PVC) membrane filter by pretreatment methods. Methods: A total of 75 spiked PVC samples for Cr, Fe and Mn ranged from 6 ug/sample to 40 ug/sample were used to evaluate recovery rates for three pretreatment methods: acid extraction, hot plate ashing and microwave digestion. For Mn, an additional 75 spiked mixed cellulose ester(MCE) membrane filters were analysed to compare the recovery rates of PVC samples. All samples were analysed with an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer(ICP-OES) and manganese samples were additionally analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometer(AAS). Results: The overall mean recovery rates of PVC samples for Cr, Fe and Mn were 90% or higher regardless of pretreatment methods, but there were statistically significant differences in recovery rates for Cr(p<0.05) and Mn(p<0.01) samples by pretreatment methods. The biases and the coefficient variations of PVC samples for three metals pretreated with three kinds of pretreatment methods ranged from 1.7% to 4.7% and from 1.6% to 6.5%, respectively. The manganese PVC samples pretreated by microwave digestion and analyzed with ICP-OES had the lowest bias at 1.9% and also showed lower bias than the bias for MCE samples, 2.7%. Conclusions: In order to accurately analyze the metals sampled with PVC membrane filters, microwave digestion and ICP-OES can be recommended.

Heavy metal contamination levels in Andong reservoir and Imha reservoir were measured with heavy metal contents in both water and sediment, and analyzed with heavy metal accumulation level in inhabitant fish, Carassius auratus, using an inductively coupled plasma spectrometer and an atomic absorption spectrometer. High levels of heavy metal contents in water, sediment and the tissues of C. auratus were detected. Likewise, relatively high levels of As were detected in water and sediment from Andong reservoir. In addition, higher levels of Cr, Cu, Cd and As content were detected in muscle and bone tissues of fish from Andong reservoir than those from Imha reservoir. As a result, the heavy metal content of water, sediment and inhabitant fish, C. auratus, in Andong reservoir was higher than Imha reservoir. We proposed that heavy metal contamination in water and inhabitant fish is attributed to various metals derived from abandoned mines and farmlands that are upstream of Andong reservoir.

A simple two stage aerosol filter sampler which allows simultaneous and fractional collection of two different-size particles, coarse and fine, was constructed and applied to the collection of Seoul atmospheric particulate for inorganic analysis. The sampler consist of two 47-mm diameter filter holder, a pneumatic pump, and a flowmeter. Filtering rate normally runs around 20$\ell$/min for 8 hrs. Using the sampler, a series of seasonal aerosol samples were collected from June 1986 to March 1988 at Yonsei University campus, Seoul and subsequently analysed for ten environmentally important metals using an atomic absorption spectrometer and an inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometer. The analysed metals are Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn. The analytical results showed the following order of metal abundance; Al > Fe > Zn > Pb > Mn > Cu > V > Ni > Cr > Cd. Based upon their size distribution pattern, the analyzed matals could be clasified into two groups, those present primarily in coarse particle and those in fine particle. Fe, Al, Mn, V, and Cr belong to the former group while the rest to the latter. Most metal concentration were highest in spring or winter, and lowest in autumn. Statistical analysis showed strong correlations between Al and Fe, Pb and Zn, and Cu and Mn.

Metallic elements in dustfall have been known as notable air pollutants directly or indirectly influencing human health and wealth. The first aim of this study was to obtain precise spatial distribution patterns of 5 elements (Pb, Zn, K, Cr, and Al) in dustfall around Suwon area. To predict isometric lines of metal fluxes deposited on unsupervised random sites, the study has applied both spatial statistics as a receptor model and a GIS (geographic information system). Total of 31 sampling sites were selected in the study area (roughly 3 by 3 km grid basis) and dustfall samples were then collected monthly basis by the British deposit gauges from Dec., 1995 to Nov., 1996. The metallic elements in the dustfall were then analyzed by an atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS). On the other hand, a base map overlapped by 7 layers was constructed by using the AutoCAD R13 and ARC/INFO 3.4D. Four different spatial interpolation and expolation techniques such as IDW (inverse distance weighted averaging), TIN (triangulated irregular network), polynomial regression, and kriging technique were examined to compare spatial distribution patterns. Each pattern obtained by each technique was substantally different as varing pollutant types, land of use types, and topological conditions, etc. Thus, our study focused intensively on uncertainty analysis based on a concept of the jackknife and the sum of error distance. It was found that a kriging technique was the best applicalbe in this study area.
Objectives: To determine urinary mercury levels in e-waste workers in Southern Thailand and the airborne mercury levels in the e-waste shops where they worked, to describe the associations between urinary and airborne mercury levels, and to evaluate the prevalence of mercury exposure-related health effects among e-waste workers. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted by interviewing 79 workers in 25 e-waste shops who lived in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand. Information on general and occupational characteristics, personal protective equipment use, and personal hygiene was collected by questionnaire. Urine samples were collected to determine mercury levels using a cold-vapor atomic absorption spectrometer mercury analyzer. Results: The e-waste workers' urinary mercury levels were $11.60{\mu}5.23{\mu}g/g$ creatinine (range, 2.00 to $26.00{\mu}g/g$ creatinine) and the mean airborne mercury levels were $17.00{\mu}0.50{\mu}g/m^3$ (range, 3.00 to $29.00{\mu}g/m^3$). The urinary and airborne mercury levels were significantly correlated (r=0.552, p<0.001). The prevalence of self-reported symptoms was 46.8% for insomnia, 36.7% for muscle atrophy, 24.1% for weakness, and 20.3% for headaches. Conclusions: Personal hygiene was found to be an important protective factor, and should therefore be stressed in educational programs. Employers should implement engineering measures to reduce urinary mercury levels and the prevalence of associated health symptoms among e-waste workers.

A comparative study on the chemical compositions of precipitations from February 1993 to April 1993 in Sungnam city of Kyunggi province, Inchon city, Kangneung city of Kangwon province, and Chongwon-gun of Chungbuk province has been performed. The metal cation and anion concentrations were measured by atomic absorption spectrometer and ion liquid chromatography, respectively. pH/Ion meter and direct nesslerization method were used for the concentration measurements of $H^+$ and $NH^{4+}$ ions, respectively. The quantitative orders of the cation and anion average concentrations, correlation coefficients between the ion concentrations, and pH values are used for chemical analysis on the environmental pollution and pollutant sources in the urban, surburban, seaside, and rural areas of the Korean Peninsula.
