Using the NASA's Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, version 2 (MERRA-2) reanalysis for aerosol optical depth (AOD) and satellite-observed carbon monoxide (CO) data, we examined the basic pattern of AOD variations over the three polar stations of Korea: Jangbogo and King Sejong stations in the Antarctica, and Dasan station in the Arctic area. AOD values at King Sejong and Dasan station show the maximum peaks in spring, which looks associated with the high amount of atmospheric CO emitted from the natural burning and the biomass burning. Jangbogo station shows the much less AOD compared to other two stations, and seems not strongly affected by the transport of airborne particles generated from mid-latitude regions. All three polar stations show the AOD increasing trend in general, indicating that the polar background air quality becomes polluted.
To investigate variation of aerosol number concentration at each different size with three-dimensional (3D) wind components in ocean area, aerosol particles and 3D wind components were measured in the Ieodo Ocean Research Station, which is located to 419 km southwest from Marado, the southernmost island of Korea, from 25 June to 8 July 2010. The Laser Particle Counter (LPC) and ultrasonic anemometer were used to measure the size of aerosol particles and 3D wind components (zonal (u), meridional (v), and vertical (w) wind) respectively. Surface weather chart, NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data and sounding data were used to analyze the synoptic condition. The distribution of aerosol number concentration had a large variation from bigger particles more than 1.0 ${\mu}m$ in diameter by wind direction during precipitation. In the number concentration of aerosol particles with respect to the weather conditions, particles larger than 1.0 ${\mu}m$ in size were decreased and sustained to the similar concentration at smaller particles during precipitation. The increase in aerosol number concentration was due to the sea-salt particles which was suspended by southwesterly and upward winds. In addition, the aerosol number concentration with vertical wind flow could be related with the occurrence and increasing mechanism of aerosol in marine boundary layer.

The radiative properties of atmospheric aerosol are determined by the mass and chemical characteristics, and optical properties such as aerosol optical depth (AOD), ngstr m parameter ( $\alpha$) and single scattering albedo (SSA). In particular these aerosol optical properties also determine surface temperature perturbation that may give some information in understanding the regional atmospheric radiative forcing. For understanding the radiative forcing and regional surce of aerosol, this paper summarizes and compares the aerosol optical properties results from and compares the atmospheric aerosol optical properties results from two different experiments: Anmyeon 2000 and Jeju 2001. Korea Global Atmosphere Watch Observatory (KGAWO) at Anmyeon island and ACE-Asia super-site at Gosan Jeju island have measured the radiations and aerosols since the year of 2000. The sites are located in the mid-west and south of Korea peninsula where it is strongly affected by the Asian dust coming from China region in every spring. Aerosol optical properties over both sites were measured through the ground-based sun and sky radiometers were analyzed for understanding the radiation and climate properties. Number concentration and chemical components of aerosol were additionally analyzed for the source estimation in the transportation. The frequency distributions of aerosol optical depth are rather narrow with a modal vaiue of 0.38 at both sites. However, the distributions of show one peak (1.13) at Jeju but two peaks (0.63 and 1.13) at Anmyeon. In the cases of Anmyeon, one peak around 0.63 corresponds to relatively dust-free cases, and the second peak around 1.13 characterizes the situation when Asian dust is presented. The correlation between AOD and resulted high correlation on the wide range with high values of optical depth at Anmyeon, otherwise a narrow range of with moderate to low AOD at Jeju. In dust free condition SSA decrease with waveleneth while in the presence of Asian dust SSA either stays neutral or increases slightly with wavelength. The change of surface temperature shows the stronger positive correlations with aerosol optical depth increase at Anmyeon than Jeju. In the chemical properties the aerosol are related to high concentrations in inorganic matters, SO$^4$, NO$_3$, CA2+ in fine and coarse.

Aerosol scattering coefficients for three different wavelengths ($\lambda$=450,550,700 nm) are measured almost continuously by a nephelometer in Seoul for a period of 13 months (February 2007-February 2008), which includes two weeks break in August 2007 for measurements at Daegwallyeong and YoungJongdo. The mean of the daily average scattering coefficients at $\lambda$=550 nm is $194.1{\pm}144.2Mm^{-1}$ and the minimum and maximum are $14.3Mm^{-1}$ and $998.1Mm^{-1}$, respectively. The scattering coefficient shows a general increasing trend with atmospheric relative humidity (RH). When the data are classified according to weather conditions, the days with no major weather events show the smallest scattering coefficient and also the lowest RH. Surprisingly haze/fog days show the largest scattering coefficient and Asian dust days comes in second. Although the variation is large within a season, winter shows the largest and autumn shows the smallest scattering coefficient. The average ${\AA}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m$ exponent is $1.40{\pm}0.32$ for the entire Seoul measurement. As expected, Asian dust days show the smallest ${\AA}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m$ exponent and haze/fog days are the next, suggesting more efficient hygroscopic growth of aerosols for this weather condition. Aerosol scattering coefficient seems to show better correspondence with CCN concentration rather than total aerosol concentration, which may indicate that CCN active aerosols are also good scattering aerosols.

Air pollution has attracted ever-increasing attention because of its substantial influence on air quality and human health. To better understand the characteristics of long-range transported pollution, the single particle chemical composition and size were investigated by the single particle aerosol mass spectrometry in Fuzhou, China from 17th to 22nd January, 2016. The results showed that the haze was mainly caused by the transport of cold air mass under higher wind speed (10 m·s-1) from the Yangtze River Delta region to Fuzhou. The number concentration elevated from 1,000 to 4,500 #·h-1, and the composition of mobile source and secondary aerosol increased from 24.3% to 30.9% and from 16.0% to 22.5%, respectively. Then, the haze was eliminated by the clean air mass from the sea as indicated by a sharp decrease of particle number concentration from 4,500 to 1,000 #·h-1. The composition of secondary aerosol and mobile sources decreased from 29.3% to 23.5% and from 30.9% to 23.1%, respectively. The particles with the size ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 ㎛ were mainly in the accumulation mode. The stationary source, mobile source, and secondary aerosol contributed to over 70% of the potential sources. These results will help to understand the physical and chemical characteristics of long- range transported pollutants.

This study was carried out to characterize sources of atmospheric total suspended particulates (TSP) in urban and sub--urban areas of metropolitan taegu. The sources were tentatively identified by a multivariate technique, i.e. principal component analysis (PCA), and the source contributions to the atmospheric concentrations of TSP were further estimated by stepwise multiple regression analysis. A total of 5 sources was identified in the urban area of Taegu (soil dust resuspension, fuel combustion, secondary aerosol, traffic related aerosol, and refuge burning), while 4 sources were found to be significant in the sub--urban area as following: fuel combustion/secondary aerosol, soil dust resuspension, traffic related aerosol, and wood/agricultural burning. The largest contributor to the atmospheric TSP appeared to be the soil dust resuspension in both areas. The source apportionment of the extractable organic matter (EOM) was also carried out for the Taegu data. The EOM was determined with respect to the solvent polarity, i.e. cyclohexane (non-polar), dichloromethane (semi--polar), and acetone (polar). In addition, the source profiles for the TSP in Taegu area were estimated using a PCA-based algorithm, and the validity was evaluated tentatively by comparing the data in the literature.

This study investigates long-term trends and characteristics of aerosol light scattering coefficient at Seoul and Baengnyeongdo in order to understand aerosol optical and radiative properties around Korea. The analysis period is limited to one year of 2011. First, the aerosol scattering coefficients (${\sigma}_{sp}$) of both sites show strong linear dependence on the $PM_{2.5}$ mass concentrations with significant correlations between both. Further, correlations and sensitivity between ${\sigma}_{sp}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ increase with relative humidity, implying both relationships are strongly dependent upon moisture amounts in the atmosphere. This study applied 3-step careful quality control procedures to the analysis of ${\sigma}_{sp}$ for the insurance of data confidence. For the relationship analysis of extinction coefficients (${\sigma}_{ext}$) to visibility and aerosol optical depth, ${\sigma}_{sp}$ observed at 3 p.m. have been used with help of aerosol absorption coefficients (${\sigma}_{ap}$) in order to remove its dependence upon relative humidity, and also those of rainy period have been excluded. As expected, ${\sigma}_{ext}$ estimated are inversely proportional to visibility observation by eye. Finally, aerosol extinction coefficients have been vertically integrated with an assumption of nearly well-mixed within an e-folding height to determine aerosol optical depth, and compared with those retrieved from sunphotometer. The results show a reasonable agreement in spite of an inherent difference of each definition. We expect these findings would help to eventually understand aerosol radiative forcing and its effect on the regional climate change around Korea.
It is very important to measure atmospheric particles and evaluate the characteristics of them since aerosol can influence atmospheric environment, climate, and health. Satellite, aircraft, radio sonde are usually used to measure the vertical distribution of particle properties, temperature, humidity, and pressure. Although the method of using an aircraft is favorable to collect the horizontal distribution of the particles, but unadaptable to measure the vertical distribution of the particles. However, all-in-one balloon particle sampler system can collect particles depending on each altitude controling the balloon by winch. In this research, we performed the air sampling on the TEM grids using house made light weight impactor at the altitude of 300m and 900m. The collected particles were analyzed using TEM/EDS.
As land remote sensing applications are expanding to the extraction of quantitative information, the importance of atmospheric correction is increasing. Considering the difficulty of atmospheric correction for land images, it should be applied when it is necessary. The quantitative information extraction and time-series analysis on biophysical variables in land surfaces are two major applications that need atmospheric correction. Atmospheric aerosol content and column water vapor, which are very dynamic in spatial and temporal domain, are the most influential elements and obstacles in retrieving accurate surface reflectance. It is difficult to obtain aerosol and water vapor data that have suitable spatio-temporal scale for high- and medium-resolution multispectral imagery. Selection of atmospheric correction method should be based on the availability of appropriate aerosol and water vapor data. Most atmospheric correction of land imagery assumes the Lambertian surface, which is not the case for most natural surfaces. Further BRDF correction should be considered to remove or reduce the anisotropic effects caused by different sun and viewing angles. The atmospheric correction methods of optical imagery over land will be enhanced to meet the need of quantitative remote sensing. Further, imaging sensor system may include pertinent spectral bands that can help to extract atmospheric data simultaneously.
The sensitivity of aerosol light extinction coefficient to the aerosol chemical composition change is estimated by (1) calculating the aerosol water content and chemical concentrations by a gas/particle equilibrium model and (2) calculating the aerosol light extinction coefficient by a Mie theory based optical model. The major chemical species are total (gas and particle phase) sulfuric acid, total nitric acid, and total ammonia which are based on the measurement data at Seoul and Gosan. At Seoul, since there were enough ammonia to neutralize both total sulfuric acid and total nitric acid, the dry ionic concentration is most sensitive to the variation of the total nitric acid level, while the total mass concentration (ionic concentration plus water content) and thus, the aerosol light extinction coefficient are primarily determined by the total sulfuric acid. At Gosan, since the concentration of ambient sulfuric acid was the highest among the inorganic species, sulfate salts determined aerosol hygroscopicity. Thus, both ionic and total mass concentration, and resultant aerosol light extinction coefficient are primarily determined by the sulfuric acid level.
