This article is concerned with asymmetric volatility models for financial time series. A generalization of standard single-threshold volatility model is discussed via multiple-threshold in which we specialize to twothreshold case for ease of presentation. An empirical illustration is made by analyzing S&P500 data from NYSE (New York Stock Exchange). For comparison measures between competing models, parametric bootstrap method is used to generate forecast distributions from which summary statistics of CP (Coverage Probability) and PE (Prediction Error) are obtained. It is demonstrated that our suggestion is useful in the field of asymmetric volatility analysis.
The news impact curve(NIC) originally proposed by Engle and Ng (1993) is a graphical representation of volatility for financial time series. The NIC is a simple but a powerful tool for identifying variability of a given time series. It is noted that the NIC is suited to symmetric volatility. Recently a lot of attention has been paid to asymmetric volatility models and therefore asymmetric version of the NIC would be useful in the field of financial time series. In this article, we propose to incorporate LASSO in constructing asymmetric NICs based on asymmetric GARCH models. In particular, bilinear GARCH models are considered and illustrated via KOSDAQ data.

This article deals with threshold-asymmetric volatility models for over-dispersed and zero-inflated time series of count data. We introduce various threshold integer-valued autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (ARCH) models as incorporating over-dispersion and zero-inflation via conditional Poisson and negative binomial distributions. EM-algorithm is used to estimate parameters. The cholera data from Kolkata in India from 2006 to 2011 is analyzed as a real application. In order to construct the threshold-variable, both local constant mean which is time-varying and grand mean are adopted. It is noted via a data application that threshold model as an asymmetric version is useful in modelling count time series volatility.

With a wide recognition that financial time series typically exhibits asymmetry patterns in volatility so called leverage effects, various asymmetric GARCH(1, 1) processes have been introduced to investigate asymmetric volatilities. A lot of researches have also been directed to non-stationary volatilities to deal with frequent high ups and downs in financial time series. This article is concerned with both asymmetric and non-stationary GARCH-type models. As a subsequent paper of Choi et al. (2020), we review various asymmetric and non-stationary GARCH(1, 1) processes, and in turn propose how to compare competing models using a parametric bootstrap methodology. As an illustration, Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is analyzed.
Purpose: The aim of this study is to explore the dynamic linkage between conditional stock market volatility and macroeconomic uncertainty of Bangladesh. Research design, data, and methodology: This study uses monthly data covering the time period from January 2005 to December 2018. A comprehensive set of macroeconomic variables, namely industrial production index (IP), consumer price index (CPI), broad money supply (M2), 91-day treasury bill rate (TB), treasury bond yield (GB), exchange rate (EX), inflow of foreign remittance (RT) and stock market index of DSEX are used for analysis. Symmetric and asymmetric univariate GARCH family of models and multivariate VAR model, along with block exogeneity and impulse response functions, are implemented on conditional volatility series to discover the possible interactions and causal relations between macroeconomic forces and stock return. Results: The analysis of the study exhibits time-varying volatility and volatility persistence in all the variables of interest. Moreover, the asymmetric effect is found significant in the stock return and most of the growth series of macroeconomic fundamentals. Results from the multivariate VAR model indicate that only short-term interest rate significantly influence the stock market volatility, while conditional stock return volatility is significant in explaining the volatility of industrial production, inflation, and treasury bill rate. Conclusion: The findings suggest an increasing interdependence between the money market and equity market as well as the macroeconomic fundamentals of Bangladesh.

As is pointed out by Gourieroux (1997), the volatility effects in financial time series vary according to the signs of the return rates and therefore asymmetric Threshold-GARCH (TGARCH, henceforth) processes are natural extensions of the standard GARCH toward asymmetric volatility modeling. For preliminary detection of asymmetry in volatility, we suggest graphs of squared-log-returns for various financial time series including KOSPI, KOSDAQ and won-Euro exchange rate. Next, asymmetric TGARCH(1,1) model fits are provided in comparisons with standard GARCH(1.1) models.

The paper aims to measure stock price volatility on Ho Chi Minh stock exchange (HSX). We apply symmetric models (GARCH, GARCH-M) and asymmetry (EGARCH and TGARCH) to measure stock price volatility on HSX. We used time series data including the daily closed price of VN-Index during 1/03/2001-1/03/2019 with 4375 observations. The results show that GARCH (1,1) and EGARCH (1,1) models are the most suitable models to measure both symmetry and asymmetry volatility level of VN-Index. The study also provides evidence for the existence of asymmetric effects (leverage) through the parameters of TGARCH model (1,1), showing that positive shocks have a significant effect on the conditional variance (volatility). This result implies that the volatility of stock returns has a big impact on future market movements under the impact of shocks, while asymmetric volatility increase market risk, thus increase the attractiveness of the stock market. The research results are useful reference information to help investors in forecasting the expected profit rate of the HSX, and also the risks along with market fluctuations in order to take appropriate adjust to the portfolios. From this study's results, we can see risk prediction models such as GARCH can be better used in risk forecasting especially.
This study is to analyse the causality and volatility spillover between farming fish species in consumption replacement relation using flatfish(oliver flounder) and rockfish's wholesale market price data from September 2006 to July 2015. For the analysis, VAR(5) model and bivariate asymmetric GARCH-BEKK model are employed. The empirical results of this study are summarized as follows: First, the price volatility of flatfish and rockfish is very large without the trend during the sample period. Second, the correlation coefficient between flatfish and rockfish wholesale markets has positive 0.1059 value. Third, causality relation is unidirectional from rockfish market to flatfish market. Fourth, conditional volatility spillover effect is unidirectional from rockfish market to flatfish market, but asymmetric volatility effect is bidirectional between flatfish and rockfish markets that implies the bad news arising from flatfish wholesale market impact on rockfish market's volatility and the bad news arising from rockfish wholesale market impact on flatfish market's volaltilty. Consequently, based on the thus results, the volatility spillover effect interacts and is bidirectional between flatfish and rockfish wholesale markets.
Fama asserted that in an efficient market, we can't make a trading rule that consistently outperforms the average stock market returns. This study aims to suggest a machine learning algorithm to improve the trading performance of an intraday short volatility strategy applying asymmetric volatility spillover effect, and analyze its trading performance improvement. Generally stock market volatility has a negative relation with stock market return and the Korean stock market volatility is influenced by the US stock market volatility. This volatility spillover effect is asymmetric. The asymmetric volatility spillover effect refers to the phenomenon that the US stock market volatility up and down differently influence the next day's volatility of the Korean stock market. We collected the S&P 500 index, VIX, KOSPI 200 index, and V-KOSPI 200 from 2008 to 2018. We found the negative relation between the S&P 500 and VIX, and the KOSPI 200 and V-KOSPI 200. We also documented the strong volatility spillover effect from the VIX to the V-KOSPI 200. Interestingly, the asymmetric volatility spillover was also found. Whereas the VIX up is fully reflected in the opening volatility of the V-KOSPI 200, the VIX down influences partially in the opening volatility and its influence lasts to the Korean market close. If the stock market is efficient, there is no reason why there exists the asymmetric volatility spillover effect. It is a counter example of the efficient market hypothesis. To utilize this type of anomalous volatility spillover pattern, we analyzed the intraday volatility selling strategy. This strategy sells short the Korean volatility market in the morning after the US stock market volatility closes down and takes no position in the volatility market after the VIX closes up. It produced profit every year between 2008 and 2018 and the percent profitable is 68%. The trading performance showed the higher average annual return of 129% relative to the benchmark average annual return of 33%. The maximum draw down, MDD, is -41%, which is lower than that of benchmark -101%. The Sharpe ratio 0.32 of SVS strategy is much greater than the Sharpe ratio 0.08 of the Benchmark strategy. The Sharpe ratio simultaneously considers return and risk and is calculated as return divided by risk. Therefore, high Sharpe ratio means high performance when comparing different strategies with different risk and return structure. Real world trading gives rise to the trading costs including brokerage cost and slippage cost. When the trading cost is considered, the performance difference between 76% and -10% average annual returns becomes clear. To improve the performance of the suggested volatility trading strategy, we used the well-known SVM algorithm. Input variables include the VIX close to close return at day t-1, the VIX open to close return at day t-1, the VK open return at day t, and output is the up and down classification of the VK open to close return at day t. The training period is from 2008 to 2014 and the testing period is from 2015 to 2018. The kernel functions are linear function, radial basis function, and polynomial function. We suggested the modified-short volatility strategy that sells the VK in the morning when the SVM output is Down and takes no position when the SVM output is Up. The trading performance was remarkably improved. The 5-year testing period trading results of the m-SVS strategy showed very high profit and low risk relative to the benchmark SVS strategy. The annual return of the m-SVS strategy is 123% and it is higher than that of SVS strategy. The risk factor, MDD, was also significantly improved from -41% to -29%.
This study investigates the recent asymmetric effect of news on stock return volatility in Asian five stock markets - Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and Malaysia - since 2000. This study uses the GJR-M model which shows a different effect of a good and bad news on volatility. Empirical results show that the unexpected negative return has a more crucial effect on stock return volatility than the unexpected positive one does in all five stock markets. This implies that the bad news of the stock markets gives a more remarkable effect on volatility than good news does. This study finds that it is very important for market participants and regulation practitioners to distinguish between positive and negative return shocks in the stock markets since bad news might have a larger impacts on volatility than good news.
