Post-Affricate Phonatory Processes in Korean and English: Acoustic Correlates and Implications for Phonological Analysis

  • This study investigates phonation modes of vowels following the affricate consonants in Korean and English- -tense affricate /c'/, lenis affricate /c/, and aspirated affricate /$c^{h}$/ for Korean; voiced affricate /$\check{J}$/ and aspirated affricate /c/ for English. The investigation makes significant use of the H1*-H2* measure (a normalized amplitude difference between the first and second harmonics) to provide acoustic correlates of the phonation types. The major findings for English are that the H1*-H2* measure at the vowel onset was significantly larger in post-aspirated position than in post-voiced position. The Korean data showed the H1*-H2* measure at the vowel onset to be significantly higher in the post-aspirated class than in the post-tense class. On the other hand, the Fo values for the post-lenis vowels were significantly lower than those of the other two classes during the first half of the vowel. Based on the phonetic results, this study argues for the need to incorporate the [stiff vocal folds] and [slack vocal folds] features into the phonological treatments of Korean affricates, while maintaining the two features [constricted glottis] and [spread glottis].

Some Notes on Articulatory Correlates of Three-way Bilabial Stop Contrast in /Ca/ Context in Korean: An Electromagnetic Articulography (EMA) Study

  • Recently, we have launched a large-scale articulatory study to investigate how the three-way contrastive stops (i.e., lenis, fortis, and aspirated) in Korean are kinematically expressed (i.e., in terms of articulatory movement characteristics) in various contexts, using a magnetometer (Electromagnetic Articulography). In this paper, we report some preliminary results about how the three-way bilabial series /p,$p^h,p^*$/ produced in /Ca/ context in isolation are kinematically characterized not only during the lip closure but also during the following vocalic articulation. Some important notes could be made from the results. First, the degree of lip constriction (as measured by the lip aperture between the upper and lower lips) was smaller for the lenis /p/ and larger for the fortis/aspirated /$p^*,p^h$/, showing a two-way distinction during the closure. Second, the tongue lowering for the following vowel was more extreme after the lenis /p/ than after the fortis/aspirated /$p^*,p^h$/. Regarding this vocalic articulatory difference in the tongue height, we discussed the possibility that the articulatory tension associated with the fortis/aspirated stops is further reflected in the lingual vocalic movement maintaining the tongue position to a certain level for the following vowel /a/, while the lenis consonant does not impose such articulatory constraints, resulting in more tongue lowering. Finally, the temporal relationship between the release of the stop closure and the lowest tongue position of the following vowel remained constant, suggesting that CV coordination is invariantly maintained across the consonant type. This pattern was interpreted as supporting the view that the consonant and vowel gestures are coordinated in much the same way across languages.

VOT and Its Effect on the Syllable Duration in Busan Korean

  • Two identical experiments are conducted at a six month interval in order to examine the VOT and its effect on the whole syllable duration or the rest portion of the syllable in Busan Korean. Just like the general characteristics of VOT, the aspirated stops consistently exhibit the longest VOT while tense stops have the shortest VOT. However, alveolar stops exhibit shorter VOT than labial stops, and it is contrary to the previous studies which claim that VOT values of labial stops are shorter than VOT values of alveolar stops. Moreover, there is a relationship between VOT and syllable/VC duration across stops. While VOT and syllable/VC duration have symmetric relationship for the aspirated velar and bilabial stops, other lax and tense stops exhibit the inverse relationship between the VOT and syllable/VC duration.

Phonetic characteristics of Korean lax, fortis, and aspirated stops in apraxic patients (한국어 파열음에 나타나는 실행증 환자의 음성적 특성 연구)

  • This study examined the perception and production of Korean lax, fortis and aspirated stops in three apraxic patients. All of tile subjects made more production errors than perception errors. This indicates that apraxic patients have problems in phonetic execution rather than phonological representation. Additionally, in both production and perception, there were more errors in non-word-initial consonants than in word-initial consonants. These findings contradict those of the previous studies which report more errors in word-initial consonants. This study also found that, unlike previous studies in the types of errors made, distortion errors were high in both non-word-initial and word-initial consonants in apraxic patients. Generally, VOT of the stops showed significant differences among lax, fortis, and aspirated stops, which indicates that there is a failure not in choosing the appropriate stop but in positioning or motor planning at the articulation stage.

  • Aberrations in VOT measures in apraxia of speech are indicative of speech motor programming impairment. In English, overlaps of VOT between voiceless and voiced plosives have been frequently observed in patients with apraxia of speech. Unlike English, Korean plosives constitute trichotomy in terms of manner of production, that is, voiceless aspirated /p', t', k'/ ; voiceless or voiced, weakly aspirated /p-b, t-k, k-g/ ; or voiceless, heavily aspirated /p, t, k/. In this spectrographic study, VOT measures during Korean plosives produced by a patient with apraxia of speech were compared to those by age- and gender- matching normal subjects. The results indicated that there were partial overlaps between VOT of /b, d, g/ and those of /p, t, k/, implying that the errors were phonetic in nature. In addition, larger VOT variabilities in apraxia of speech compared to the normals were noted.

F0 as a primary cue for signaling word-initial stops of Seoul Korean (서울 방언 어두 폐쇄음의 후속모음 F0)

  • Previous studies showed that the voice onset time (VOT) of aspirated and lenis stops has been merged, and post-stop fundamental frequency (F0) has emerged as a primary cue to distinguish the two stops in the younger generation and female speech. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that VOT merger in aspirated and lenis stops occurs after an F0 difference between the two stops becomes stabilized. In other words, unless post-stop F0, which is a redundant feature, is fully developed, it is hard for VOT merger to happen. Females have got a stable F0 difference in stops earlier than males. Therefore, VOT merger could happen, and as a result, females could take the lead in changing from VOT to F0 in initial stops. This study also shows that speakers who acquired F0 as a primary cue use F0 to the full to distinguish lenis stops from two other stops (aspirated and fortis).

Consonantal and Vocalic Effects in Korean Stop Identification

  • This study investigates the contribution of vocalic information following the release of an initial stop to the identification of the three-way stop contrast (aspirated, lax, and tense) in Korean. Recent studies showed that there is a strong interaction between consonant types and tone. The findings raise questions concerning Korean listeners' use of tonal (or vocalic F0) variation in differentiation initial tense, lax, and aspirated stops. The above issues are addressed in the present study using a cross-splicing methodology. The overall results show that low vocalic F0 provided the most salient information for lax stops; tense and aspirated stop identification depended on a combination of VOT, F0, and H1-H2 characteristics. The perceptual dominance of F0 over VOT for lax stops is consistent with the size of the F0 difference in utterance-initial position, as well as their prominent role in Korean intonational phonology.

An Acoustic Analysis of the Aspiration Merger in Korean

  • In Korean, 'Aspiration Merger' is the result of the heteromorphemic sequence of lenis stop and /h/ becoming a single aspirated stop word-medially. However, the contrast between lenis stop-plus-/h/ and an underlying aspirated stop is maintained when they span Phonological Phrase boundaries. By varying the position in the prosodic domain such as APP (Across Phonological Phrase) and PPM (Phonological Phrase Medial) positions, the phonetic properties of the two categories are compared. In the results from noise duration and change of intensity, lenis stop-plus-/h/ show a large difference between the APP and PPM positions. The results from a noise duration comparison show that the two categories are completely neutralized into aspirated stop in the PPM position and the complete neutralization is sensitive to prosodic phrasing.

  • The purpose of this study was to introduce the radiography for the natural course and clinical diagnosis of foreign body ingestion and aspiration, to help diagnosis and treatment, to evaluate the accuracy of radiographic images of pediatric patients. A 2 to 7 year-old patient who ingested a foreign body was ingested and aspirated with foreign substances such as coin, cloth pin, earring, baduk stone, and hairpins, and chest and abdomen of the plain radiography. The pediatric patient who ingested and aspirated the foreign body of the coins, the clothespins, the earrings, the stones, and the hairpins were examined by chest and abdomen of the plain radiography and fluoroscopic images. The radiography examination can be combined to effectively cope with the treatment and the treatment of the foreign substance removal. It can be applied to the diagnosis of foreign body in pediatric patient's clinic and appropriate treatment and treatment direction.

Differences of Perceptual Correctness in the Place of Articulation Between Korean Plosives According to Two Phonation Types (두 가지 발성 유형에 따른 한국어 파열음의 조음 위치 인지도(認知度) 차이)

  • The final purpose of this paper is to prove that, under noisy environment, there is significant difference of perceptibility of the place of articulation between fortis plosives and aspirated plosives in Korean. For this research, a perceptual experiment had been made. Two groups of subjects heard stimuli with noise and were required to answer which sound they had heard. The result is that, with noise, aspirated plosives cannot be heard clearly whereas fortis plosives can be heard well.
