Evaluation of the Noise Emission in Low Noise Concrete Pavements (저소음용 콘크리트 포장의 소음평가)

  • Noise has become an environmental pollution that affects most peoples' health, comfort or general well being. there are many sources of noise, but one of them clearly dominates road traffic noise. It has traditionally been associated with engine and exhaust noise of vehicles. However the emission and propagation of noise from these sources were partly reduced, while at the same time the noise emission from the tire/road interaction on a relative scale became more and more prominent Generally, Portland cement concrete(PCC) pavements have the advantage of durability and superior surface friction when compared to most dense-graded asphalt. However, It is known that PCC pavements create more noise than asphaltic surfaces due to the noise from interaction of tire and pavement surface. Therefore, recent research has shown some new concrete pavement textures to be worth further examination. So in this paper, we considered the 9 types of low noise concrete pavements to evaluate tire/pavement noise.

  • The traffic noise from automobiles have been causing so serious problems in urban areas that the study and solutions to reduce noise and air pollution have been required. In general, Portland cement concrete(PCC) pavements have the advantage of durability and superior surface friction when compared to most dense-graded asphalt. However, data collected to date generally show PCC pavements to create more noise than asphaltic surfaces. Therefore, recent research has shown some new concrete pavement textures to be worth further examination. Exposed Aggregate Pavements have also been evaluated for noise impacts. This PCC surface is accomplished by brushing the surface of the plastic concrete to expose the aggregate, increasing the macro texture. In this study, in order to manufacture Aggregate Exposed Concrete for low noise pavements, we considered the effects of retarder agents according to dosage and curing conditions. So we tried to find out relationship between textures of surface and effects of retarder.

  • Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavements have the advantage of durability and superior surface friction when compared to most dense-graded asphalt. However, data collected to date generally show PCC pavements to create more noise than asphaltic surfaces. As the results of research, surfaces of exposed aggregate, tining and grooving concrete pavements appear to provide better noise quality characteristics as well as good frictional characteristics and durability. In this paper, several methods of texturing were considered to reduce tire/pavement noise. As the results of this paper, PCC pavements with special texturing have superior surface friction as well as noise reductions when compared to conventional PCC pavement. Especially, Exposed Aggregate Concrete (EAC) surface appears to provide better noise quality characteristics. Conclusively, if overall noise and safety are considered simultaneously, EAC pavement that provides satisfactory friction as well as better noise reductions is suggested.

  • PURPOSES : Analysis and design of asphalt concrete (AC) and continuously reinforced concrete (CRC) composite pavements. METHODS : In this study, the service life of the AC/CRC composite pavements was determined based on the probabilistic method in the mechanistic-empirical pavement design guide(MEPDG). Typical pavement design was provided with respect to heavy truck traffic volume of highways. RESULTS : The service life of the composite pavements based on IRI was shorter than that based on rutting at lower traffic volume, but this trend was switched at higher traffic volume. CONCLUSIONS : It is concluded that the main distress affecting the service life of the composite pavements was longitudinal roughness and rutting. Roughness became lower, but rut depth became greater as the stiffness of the CRC increased.

Dynamic Analysis of Asphalt Concrete Pavement Structure

  • A new solution for the dynamic analysis of as asphalt concrete pavements under moving loads has been developed. The asphalt concrete pavement can be modeled in elastic or viscoelastic medium of multi-layered structure. The subgrade can be modeled as either a rigid base or a semi-infinite halfspace. The loads may be constant or arbitrary circular loads into one direction. The method utilizes the Complex Response Method of transient analysis with a continuum solution in the horizontal direction and a finite-element solution in the vertical direction. This proposed method incorporates such important factors as wave propagation, inertia and damping effects of the medium as well as frequency-dependent asphalt concrete properties. The proposed method has been validted with the full-scale field truck test, which was conducted on instrumented asphalt concrete section on a test track at PACCAR Technical Center in Mount Vernon, Washington. Comparison with field strain data from full-scale pavement tests has shown excellent agreement. Study on Inhomogeneity in Compositions of Asphalt Pavement Wear Particles Using Thermogravimetric Analysis

  • Asphalt pavements are generally composed of fine and coarse aggregates, bitumen, and modifier. Asphalt pavement wear particles (APWPs) are produced by friction between the road surface and the tire tread, and they flow into the environment such as rivers and oceans. Model APWPs were prepared and a single APWP of 212-500 (S-APWP) and 500-1000 ㎛ (L-APWP) was analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to investigate inhomogeneity in the compositions of the APWPs. The reference TGA thermogram was built using thermograms of the raw materials and formulation of the model asphalt pavement. The compositions of the APWPs were different from each other. Ash contents of the APWPs were lower than expected. Inhomogeneity in the total contents of bitumen and modifier was more severe than that in the other components. The inhomogeneity of the S-APWPs was more severe than that of the L-APWPs.

An Analytical Study to Reduce Plastic Deformation in Intersection Pavements (교차로 포장 소성변형 저감을 위한 해석적 연구)

  • PURPOSES : Plastic deformation is frequently made in intersection asphalt pavement at its early age due to deceleration and stoppage of vehicles. This study has been performed to provide a mechanistic basis for reasonable selection of paving method to minimize the plastic deformation at intersection. METHODS : Pavement layer, temperature, traffic volume of the intersections managed by the Daejeon Regional Construction and Management Administration were collected to calculate asphalt dynamic modulus with pavement depth by using a prediction equation suggested by the Korean pavement design guide. Performance of ordinary dense-graded asphalt pavement, polymer modified asphalt pavement, and fiber reinforced asphalt pavement was analyzed by finite element method and the results were used in a performance model to predict the plastic deformation. RESULTS : In aspect of performance, the three paving methods were usable under low traffic while the fiber reinforced asphalt pavement was the most suitable under heavy traffic. CONCLUSIONS : Reasonable paving method suitable for traffic characteristics in the intersection might be decided by considering economic feasibility.

Effect of Moisture and Freeze-Thaw on Mechanical Properties of CRM Asphalt Mexture (폐타이어 재활용 아스팔트 혼합물의 기계적 성질에 대한 습윤과 동결 융해의 영향)

  • This paper presents the experimental test results on moisture and freeze-thaw resistance of hot mix crumb rubber modified (CRM) asphalt concrete mixture. To compare the differences in mechanical properties of conventional and CRM asphalt concretes, various tests were conducted under different moisture conditions and freeze-thaw cycles. Marshall mix design was also performed to determine the optimum asphalt contents for the both asphalt concrete mixtures. Test results revealed that the moisture and freeze-thaw resistance of CRM asphalt mixture was superior to the conventional asphalt concrete. As a result, it is considered that the utilization of waste tires in asphalt pavements has the potential of minimizing the damage due to the moisture and freeze-thaw.

  • Premature failures in pavements are frequently reported due to rapid increasement in traffic volume, heavy vehicles, and high temperature in the summer. Based on this concept in mind, Korea Highway Corporation established the Test Road Operation Center to estimate the pavement performance. To evaluate the pavement performance effectively using the field data, wandering is an important topic in pavement analysis. In this study, portable wandering system was developed and analyzed to investigate the pavement responses due to the dynamic truck passes, and analyzed the wandering to dynamic load test. The test results revealed that the advantages of laser devices were noticeable compare to the other measuring ones. To understand the behavioral characteristics of pavements using the wandering measurement devices, dynamic truck tests were conducted in the field. Test results showed that the effects of wandering on asphalt pavement were significant. The data analysis using this wandering effect is considered as an important tool in performance analysis of asphalt concrete pavement.
