  • This study suggests long-life asphalt pavement method which can save maintenance cost by increasing the design and performance period of pavements. The high modulus asphalt binder developed and then various physical tests are performed. Laboratory performance tests and accelerated pavement test are conducted for the high modulus and conventional mixtures. The test results show that dynamic modulus values of high modulus mixtures are higher than those of the conventional mixtures, The high modulus mixtures yield better fatigue, rutting and moisture damage performance than conventional mixtures. Structural analysis is performed and a database is built up for long life asphalt pavement design. Pavement response model is developed through a multiple regression analysis program, SPSS using the database. A design software for the long life pavements is developed based on the pavement response model and laboratory and field performance tests results. In addition, optimum pavement sections and materials are suggested. The suggested AC thickness of long life asphalt pavement is 29cm. A Life cycle cost analysis(LCCA) is conducted to check the economical efficiency of the long life pavement section. The LCCA result shows that initial construction costs of long life and conventional pavements are almost equal, but long life pavement is more profitable in terms of the LCCA.

  • A new solution for the dynamic analysis of as asphalt concrete pavements under moving loads has been developed. The asphalt concrete pavement can be modeled in elastic or viscoelastic medium of multi-layered structure. The subgrade can be modeled as either a rigid base or a semi-infinite halfspace. The loads may be constant or arbitrary circular loads into one direction. The method utilizes the Complex Response Method of transient analysis with a continuum solution in the horizontal direction and a finite-element solution in the vertical direction. This proposed method incorporates such important factors as wave propagation, inertia and damping effects of the medium as well as frequency-dependent asphalt concrete properties. The proposed method has been validted with the full-scale field truck test, which was conducted on instrumented asphalt concrete section on a test track at PACCAR Technical Center in Mount Vernon, Washington. Comparison with field strain data from full-scale pavement tests has shown excellent agreement. Theoretical results have shown that the effect of vehicle speed is significant and that it is in part due to the frequency-dependent

  • The dynamic modulus of hot mix asphalt is one of the important indicators to evaluate the durability and performance of asphalt pavement. In resent, the dynamic modulus is suggested by a key property of asphalt pavement design and analysis in AASHTO 2002 Design Guide and Korean Pavement Research Project(KPRP). Master curve from laboratory test results should be needed for pavement design and analysis. The process to get the master curve is standardized. But, there are some setup and testing error at low temperature(-$10^{\circ}C$) and high temperature ($55^{\circ}C$). In this paper, a simplified process which is used 3 testing temperatures (5, 21, 40) is adopted to get the master curve. Comparison was carried out for standard process and simplified process. The suggested process can be used to get the master curve of asphalt pavement, even though some difference was shown at high temperature.

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to propose a quality control and quality assurance method for use during asphalt pavement construction using non-destructive methods, such as ground penetrating radar (GPR) and an infrared (IR) camera. METHODS : A 1.0 GHz air-coupled GPR system was used to measure the thickness and in situ density of asphalt concrete overlay during the placement and compaction of the asphalt layer in two test construction sections. The in situ density of the asphalt layer was estimated based on the dielectric constant of the asphalt concrete, which was measured as the ratio of the amplitude of the surface reflection of the asphalt mat to that of a metal plate. In addition, an IR camera was used to monitor the surface temperature of the asphalt mat to ensure its uniformity, for both conventional asphalt concrete and fiber-reinforced asphalt (FRA) concrete. RESULTS : From the GPR test, the measured in situ air void of the asphalt concrete overlay gradually decreased from 12.6% at placement to 8.1% after five roller passes for conventional asphalt concrete, and from 10.7% to 5.9% for the FRA concrete. The thickness of the asphalt concrete overlay was reduced from 7.0 cm to 6.0 cm for the conventional material, and from 9.2 cm to 6.4 cm for the FRA concrete. From the IR camera measurements, the temperature differences in the asphalt mat ranged from $10^{\circ}C$ to $30^{\circ}C$ in the two test sections. CONCLUSIONS : During asphalt concrete construction, GPR and IR tests can be applicable for monitoring the changes in in situ density, thickness, and temperature differences of the overlay, which are the most important factors for quality control. For easier and more reliable quality control of asphalt overlay construction, it is better to use the thickness measurement from the GPR.

  • Asphalt overlay resurfacing techniques have been widely utilized in maintaining asphalt concrete in Korea, causing severe traffic congestions while being in construction and difference in level due to the repeated overlay. Besides on these technical difficulties, there have been financial disadvantages associated with technique, mainly because overlay method has been executed for pavements with intact foundations, which is contrary to the norm. This study is aiming to increase the expected life length of the asphalt pavement up to the endurance period, to raise the efficiency of the pavement by maximizing the social benefit and to enhance public character of the street through combining ceramics with epoxy resins, which has advantages in compatibility with the existing pavement materials, durability to abrasion and endurance. It has been expected that the adoption of new method and pavement materials to the actual work sites will develop the performance of the pavements, and to lengthen the durability of the existing materials. The other advantages of the 'thin surfacing' method could be the improved adhesiveness, waterproof, corrosion-proof and bending strength.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the resonable guideline of asphalt concrete pavements in apartment complex. To achieve this purpose was performed review of domestic and foreign guidelines, investigation of main distresses of asphalt concrete pavement, and structural analysis for the investigated cross-sections of the pavements in apartment complex. According to results of structural analysis, this study presented the standard cross-section of the pavement with subbase of 20cm, asphalt base of 5cm, and surface of 5cm in apartment complex. In urban areas, traffic is generally opened after asphalt base course is placed because of civil complaint by dust. Surface course is placed after all of work are completed. Considering these conditions, this study also presented the standard cross-section of the pavement with subbase of 20cm, asphalt base of 7cm, and surface of 5cm for urban areas that expect civil complaints by dust.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate effect of geogrid and fabric, which are used underneath the overlaid asphalt pavement for retarding reflection cracking by simulated laboratory test. In this study, an interlayer at the interface between old concrete pavement surface and overlaid asphalt mixture, and polymer-modifier were used as an effort of retarding reflection crack initiation and for strengthening mixture. Five products were used in preparation of asphalt concrete beam specimen which was tack coated on top of jointed concrete block. Simulated Mode I and II fracture test were conducted under wheel loading and results were compared among those products. From the test results, several material and reinforcement combinations were observed to have a significant retardation effect against reflection cracking. The most effectively strengthened pavement against reflection cracking was found to be the LDPE-modifier asphalt mixture with a grid reinforcement at the bottom.

  • Pavement distress and traffic accidents are caused by pot-hole. In addition, direct and indirect damages of road users are increasing, such as loss of life due to personal injury and damage to vehicles. Generally, the asphalt concrete pavements are continuously aging from the production process to the terminal performance period. Aging causes stripping due to cracks and moisture penetration and weakening the pavement structure to induce pot-hole. In this study, adhesion performance and moisture sensitivity were evaluated according to aging degree in order to investigate the effect of aging on asphalt pavement. As a result of the study, the viscosity of the asphalt binder was increased with aging and the bond strength of the aged was increased 2~3 times than that of the unaged. The results of accelerated aging test showed an increases in indirect tensile strength and the increase in the TSR (Tensile Strength Ratio) by 4.2~8.9 %. As a result, it is noted that the anti-stripping and adhesion performances of the aged asphalt concrete are improved compared to the unaged one under the aging conditions of asphalt binder coated on aggregates.

  • The performance of waterproofing system (WPS) is known to be a function of many complex interaction of material factors, design details, and the quality of construction, but it is mainly determined by the bond strength, which is measured by tensile adhesive strength (TAS) test. to the concrete bridge deck. In this research, eight waterproofing membranes were selected from commercial market and the tensile adhesive characteristics of the WPS on concrete bridge deck were investigated in view of various factor in asphalt pavement. The factors include type of asphalt mixture, pavement thickness, paving temperature and influence of wheel loading. TAS test of different asphalt pavement types showed that TAS of WPS under SMA (Stone Mastic Asphalt) pavement was greater than that under dense asphalt pavement. TAS of sheet membranes was improved as the compaction temperature of asphalt concrete increase, but TAS of liquid membranes were not. The influence of thickness of pavement val minimal with given laboratory test condition. TAS of sheet membranes after wheel tracking test were in the order of the sites under wheel path (UWP), before wheel tracking (BWT) and nearby wheel path (NWP). Since TAS of the same WPS of UWP was higher than TAS of BWT, wheel loading had function of pressing WPS resulting in higher adhesive strength. But liquid membranes were variable on types. The feature of detached interface after TAS test showed that sheet types were all detached in between deck concrete and WPS, and liquid types were detached in between asphalt pavement and WPS.
