Asphalt pavement accounts for more than 90% of the total pavement in Korea. Pavement is most widely constructed among construction structures. The heat transfer characteristics (Thermophysical Properties) of the asphalt pavement cause the heat island effect in downtown areas. An increasing asphalt surface temperature is one of the major causes of damage to asphalt pavement. This study examined the heat transfer characteristic factors according to solar energy accumulation in an asphalt mixture. The specimens (WC-2 & PA-13, Recycled aggregate used WC-2) used in the experiment were compacted with a Gyratory Compactor. The thermo-physical properties (thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and thermal emissivity) and solar energy accumulation were evaluated. The thermal accumulation and HFM tests revealed a 1.2- to 2.0-fold difference. This indicates that the thermal conductivity of the asphalt mixture pavement changes with the accumulation of solar energy. An analysis of the correlation of thermal conductivity according to the surface temperature of the asphalt mixture showed that WC-2 was logarithmic, and PA-13 was linear. Experiments on the heat transfer characteristics of asphalt pavement that can be used for thermal failure modeling of asphalt were conducted.

This study was performed to evaluate the characteristics of waste foundry sand (WFS) and the asphalt mixture made of a foundry waste sand. To estimate the applicability of WFS, chemical and physical properties were measured by XRF(X-ray fluorescent), and SEM(Scanning electronic microfilm). To improve the stripping resistance of WFS asphalt mixture, anti-stripping agents (a hydrated lime and a liquid anti-stripping agent) were used. To improve tensile properties and durability of WFS asphalt concrete mixture, LDPE(low-density polyethylene) was used as an asphalt modifier Marshall mix design, indirect tensile strength, tensile strength ratio(TSR) after freezing and thawing, moisture susceptibility and wheel tracking tests were carried out to evaluate performance of WFS asphalt concrete. Comparing with conventional asphalt concrete, WFS asphalt concretes showed similar or the better qualify in mechanical properties, and satisfied all specification limits. Therefore, it Is concluded that waste foundry sand can be recycled as an asphalt pavement material.
PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the physical properties of recycled asphalt mixtures reinforced with glass fiber. METHODS : Firstly, mixing design was conducted on recycled asphalt mixture for use of 50% recycled aggregate. Various laboratory tests were performed on four types of recycled asphalt mixtures with different glass fiber content to evaluate the physical properties. The laboratory tests include indirect tensile strength test, dynamic modulus test, Hamburg wheel tracking test and tensile-strength ratio to evaluate cracks, rutting and moisture resistance of mixtures. RESULTS : The indirect tensile strength of fiber reinforced glass increased about 139.4%. As a result of comparing the master curves obtained by the dynamic modulus test, the elasticity was low in the low temperature region and high in the high temperature region when the glass fiber was reinforced. The glass fiber contents of PEGS 0.3%, Micro PPGF 0.1% and Macro PPGF 0.3% showed the highest moisture resistance and rutting resistance. CONCLUSIONS : The test results show that use of glass fiber reinforcement can increase the resistance to cracking, rutting, and moisture damage of asphalt mixtures. It is also necessary to validate the long-term performance of recycled asphalt mixtures with glass fiber using full scale pavement testing and field trial construction.
This paper dealt with modification of effective crack length model (ECM) by adding Poisson's ratio term to evaluate fracture toughness of asphalt concrete which varies its material property by temperature. The original ECM model was developed for solid materials, such as cement concrete, and Poisson's ratio of materials was not considered. However, since asphalt concrete is sensitive to temperature variation and changes its Poisson's ratio by temperature, it should be taken into consideration to know exact fracture property under various temperatures. Four binders, including 3 polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) binders, were used to make a dense-grade asphalt mixture and 3-point bending test was peformed on notched beam at low temperatures, from -5oC to 35oC. Elastic modulus, flexural strength and fracture toughness were obtained from the test. The results showed that, since Poisson's ratio was considered, the more accurate test values could be obtained using modified ECM equation than original ECM. PMA mixture showed higher stiffness and fracture toughness than normal asphalt mixture under very low temperatures.

This study was carried out to design the optimum mixing ratio of aggregate, cyclic aggregate, and binder (moisture, emulsified asphalt, and emulsion type additives) and produce recycling cold asphalt paving mixture satisfying site work standard. The cyclic aggregate satisfying KS F 2572 was collected from waste asphalt by adequate processing. As the moisture content increased, the shearing strength was decreased. The maximum marshall stability was shown at the 3.0 wt% moisture content. So the optimum moisture content was 3.0 wt%. The marshall stability and flow value with the amount of emulsified asphalt was satisfied in the range of 0.5~2.5 wt%, and the porosity was satisfied in the range of 0.7~2.5 wt%. So the optimum amount of emulsified asphalt was 1.6 wt%. The optimum amount of emulsion type additive was 0.1 wt% in the light of marshall stability and degree of saturation of recycling cold asphalt mixture.

Recently, the pavement distresses in the bridge deck have seriously affected the durability of bridge deck and driver's safety. The existing asphalt materials have the limitations in reducing the pavement distresses of brides deck. To protect the bridge deck and withstand the high deflection, it is necessary to develop the asphalt materials with good fatigue resistance for bridge deck pavement. The asphalt binder combined with SBS and two other admixtures has been developed for improving the resistance to fatigue cracking, productivity, and workability for bridge deck pavement. Based on the various binder test results, the developed binder is found to be PG 70-34 indicating very higher resistance against fatigue cracking. Fatigue testing, wheel tracking testing, and moisture susceptibility testing have been conducted to evaluate the performance of asphalt mixtures developed in this study. Laboratory test results show that the developed asphalt material has three times higher fatigue lives than the typical modified asphalt mixture. Full scale accelerated testing was also performed on the typical asphalt mixture and newly developed asphalt mixture to evaluate the full scale performance of asphalt mixtures. Test results indicate that the length of cracking on the new materials is only 38% of the typical material at the 250,000 load repetitions.
Viscosity, adhesion and cohesion of asphalt binder are very important characteristics in asphalt pavement. However, these characteristics can cause some problems such as inaccurate amount of asphalt mixture, reduction of asphalt content and loss of workability during asphalt pavement construction. Asphalt release agent has been used to solve these problems. Diesel oil and vegetable oil are generally used as an asphalt release agent in Korea. However, these agents have been criticized from environmental and binder integrity reasons. Therefore, this study evaluated the characteristics of asphalt release agents including diesel oil, vegetable oil and two emulsion type oils. From the study, it was found that the diesel oil resolved the binder within ten minutes and vegetable oil stripped the binder from mixture within one hour after contacting with asphalt mixture. And also, from the test for estimating the application cycle of asphalt release agent, it appears that diesel oil and vegetable oil should be applied to construction equipments every time in their uses. However, diesel oil and vegetable oil showed a good performance as a lubricant for detaching the asphalt mixtures from the truck bed.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate moisture susceptibility of a dense graded and an open graded asphalt mixtures by the method of AASHTO T-283. METHODS : To simulate moisture damage of asphalt pavements with continuously rainfall during summer rainy season, the dense graded and the open graded asphalt mixtures were immersed in water for 15 days and were measured the weight and the change of strength. Also, the mixtures were performed five freeze-thaw cycles to simulate moisture damage of the mixtures by freeze-thaw during winter and were measured the change of strength. The degradation characteristics model was used to analyze the relationship between strength and moisture damage. RESULTS : According to the results, the dense graded and the open graded asphalt mixtures were shown in the similar trends of the strength changes by immersion time and freeze-thaw cycle. However, the moisture damage reduction of open graded asphalt mixture was more sensitive in early phase than that of dense graded asphalt mixture.
The cement-asphalt mortar is a mixture of cement and asphalt emulsion, and is utilized as a underpouring materials for the railway track which is used to fill under slab panel space so as to provide a stabilized track support and a tool for reduction of noise and vibration. To increase the workability of grouting, this study investigates the effect of temperature on cement-asphalt mortar by analyzing its physical and mechanical properties before/after hardening according to the temperature (10, 15, 20, 25, $30^{\circ}C$). According to the test results, it is found that as for the physical property of fresh cement-asphalt mortar the more mixture temperature become higher or lower, the more fluidity become worse. But by increasing reducing agent amount and its unit quantity, the required fluidity is met. The compressive strength as physical property of hardened cement-asphalt mortar become lower when temperature is lower but taking it by and large the physical properties of cement-asphalt mortar before/after hardening aren't so affected by temperature and well satisfy the requirement. And it has proved that rate of expansion and freezing and thawing resistance aren't affected by temperature.
The asphalt mixture with CRM(Crumb Rubber Modifier) is known to show a better performance in resisting thermal cracking, fatigue cracking, and rutting compared with the conventional mixture. In this research, the lab tests on the physical and the mechanical characteristics of the domestic crumb rubber modified asphalt binder and conventional asphalts (AP-3, AP-5) were conducted. The physical test results show that CRM asphalt has better physical characteristics than that of conventional asphalts. The dynamic shear rheometer test results in high temperature show that CRM asphalt has higher complex shear modulus and aging resistance than those of conventional asphalts. And, the bending beam rheometer in low temperature test results show that CRM asphalt has higher resistance to thermal cracking than that of conventional asphalts.
