  • The object of this study is to determine the effect of priming on the germination ability and seedling emergence of aged soybean seeds in lab and field conditions. Artificial or natural procedure for seed aging was applied in this study. One seed lot was artificially aged for 3 to 5 days at 42$^{\circ}C$ with high relative humidity (nearly RH 100%), and the other one was stored at room temperature for 17 months. Aged seeds were osmoconditioned in -1.1 MPa polyethylene glycol 8000 (PEG) solution for 3 days at $25^{\circ}C$ and air-dried. When Danyeobkong was aged for 4 days average germination was 61.5%, however, this improved to 98.5% after the priming treatment. Improvement of seed germination by priming the aged seed was consistent with large seed sized Jangyeobkong cultivar, indicating that the priming was effective in enhancing seed germinability regardless of seed size. Priming aged seeds also resulted in good stand establishment in the field trials. Germination of aged seeds of Danyeobkong without priming was 17.0%, whereas that of primed ones was 66.4%.

  • The strain distribution on a welded aluminum alloy transition joint produced by a static tensile load has been measured using a moire method combined with photoelastic coating method. The test specimens were made of aluminum alloy 6061-T6 and 2014-T6 butt welded with ER-4043 filler metal, and were post welded heat treated (solid solution heat treatment 502.deg. C 70min.) and precipitated (artificial aging 171.deg. C 600min.) to cause an abrupt change of mechanical properties between the base metals and weld metal. The photoelastic epoxy rubber was cemented on the specimen grating which had been reproduced on the specimen surface by using an electropolishing. The measurements were compared with strains computed by Finite Element Analysis. The following results were abtained. (1) The maximum strain were distributed along the center line in the transverse directiion of the weld metal. (2) The strain gradient along the fusion line increased approaching the V-groove tip and the maximum value was observed at a quarter of width from the V-groove tip. (3) The moire method combined with photoelastic coating was proved very useful for real time strain measurement in the welded aluminum alloy transition joint.

  • In this study, researchers tried to find the effect, if any, of aging treatment to the specimens with three different dentin bonding agents using MicroCT. One, 5th generation - [Adper$^{TM}$ Single bond Plus] and two 6th generation [AdheSE$^{(R)}$, Adper$^{TM}$ Prompt$^{TM}$ L-Pop$^{TM}$] dentin bonding agents were used in this study. Specimens were divided into 4 groups according to aging treatment method used. Group I : control group, Group II : thermocycled between $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ for 60 seconds dwell time 5,000 times, Group III : aged as Group II and artificially brushed 20,000 times, Group IV : aged as Group III and were stored in artificial saliva for 6 months. With Single bond Plus, Group II showed more microleakage than Group I (p < 0.05). Group II and Group III showed more microleakage than Group IV (p < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences among the groups using AdheSE$^{(R)}$ and Prompt$^{TM}$ L-Pop$^{TM}$ (p > 0.05). Among Group I, AdheSE$^{(R)}$ showed more microleakage than Single bond Plus and Prompt$^{TM}$ L-Pop$^{TM}$ (p < 0.05). Among Group II, there were no statistically significant differences (p > 0.05). Among Group III, AdheSE$^{(R)}$ showed more microleakage than Single bond Plus and Prompt$^{TM}$ L-Pop$^{TM}$ (p < 0.05). Among Group IV, AdheSE$^{(R)}$ and Prompt$^{TM}$ L-Pop$^{TM}$ showed more microleakage than Single bond Plus (p < 0.05).

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the cost-effective and efficiency seed longevity prediction method of rice (Oryza sativa L.) germplasm for viability monitoring. To find an optimum predicting method for rice seed longevity at genebank, an accelerated ageing (AA) test, a controlled deterioration (CD) test and a dry-heat treatment (DHT) were conducted to the four groups of rice germplasm based on ecotype, such as Indica, Japonica, Javanica and Tongil type. Among the three artificial aging treatments, the dry-heat treatment of 36 hours at $90^{\circ}C$ is suggested as a routine predictive test method of rice germplasm longevity at a genebank. The distribution of germination rate on 3,066 accessions which conserved 26.5 years at $4^{\circ}C$ showed similar trend with the result of distribution by dry-heat treatment at $90^{\circ}C$ on 36 hours using 106 accessions of rice selected samples which composed four ecotype groups. The results show that the dry-heat treatment affect not only predicting the rice seed longevity but also determining effective interval for monitoring germination of rice germplasm in genebanks.

  • Oriental medicine thinks life and death as the following. 1. The universe seems to be a kind of organism which is divided into 3 branches, as Heaven, Earth and Man. Man is not created from nihil by the Creator. Heaven and Earth by their interaction operate to produce man. This is similiar that zygote is not created from nihil, and that sperm and ovum are transformed into zygote by their interaction. The symbolic meaning of sperm is Heaven, and that of ovum is Earth. Mind and body, as well as spirit and body, are not the real, but artificial words for the purpose of observing and expressing one man. So there is not spiritual substance as distinct from body. The expected life span of man is subjected to change, and is always becoming through life. Fate, the Creator and the world to come cannot be said to be. 2. After one's death, man is transformend into Heaven and Earth. Dying is this process of transformation. Although man comes into existence and closes one's life, the total life of the universe does not change. The criteria of determination of death is not in cell death, but in somatic death. Somatic death divided into 2 branches, one is heart-lung death, the other is brain death. For the standard of health changes ceaselessly as time goes by, aging and dying is not the process of losing health. Because of mind cannot be seperated from body, we'll feel at ease bodily and mentally in healthy dying. The completion of lifetimes is the value of healthy dying. 3. From the viewpoint of these, we must think to let a person die healthily is the right medical ethics. The way to let a person die healthily is divided into 3 branches, one is treatment, another is prevention and the other is promotion of health. We should treat and prevent death of sickness, but take care of healthy dying.

  • South Korea is an aging society with 10.9 percent of its population over 65 years of age, and the aging population naturally leads to a surge in elderly care costs. Compared to general hospitals and other hospitals that have systematic management strategies in an environment of intensifying hospital competition, the design and management strategies of nursing hospitals are insufficient due to the hospital's characteristics of long-term hospital admission and treatment. In this study, We conducted a symbol mark color and form analysis of nursing hospitals to establish a design strategy to meet the increasing demand on nursing hospitals. The subjects of the study were 131 hospitals that received the first grade of nursing hospitals in Korea, and each symbol mark was collected to analyze its form and color. Analysis of the form of symbol revealed that the most anthropogenic symbols were made with artificial objects, and among them, the number of symbols with crosses, hearts and human forms were higher. The color analysis showed that more than 50% of symbols consisted of two colors and the main colors were blue and green. It is expected that this research data will be used as a reference in the design of the symbolism of nursing hospitals, which will help consumers choose and develop strategies for hospital management in order to compete with the ever-increasing demand of nursing hospitals and hospital competition.

  • The number of dementia patients in Korea is estimated to be over 800,000, and the severity of dementia is becoming a social problem. However, no treatment or drug has yet been developed to cure dementia worldwide. The number of dementia patients is expected to increase further due to the rapid aging of the population. Currently, early detection of dementia and delaying the course of dementia symptoms is the best alternative. This study presented a methodology for early diagnosis of dementia by measuring and analyzing amyloid plaques. This vital protein can most clearly and early diagnose dementia in the retina through AI-based image analysis. We performed binary classification and multi-classification learning based on CNN on retina data. We also developed a deep learning algorithm that can diagnose dementia early based on pre-processed retinal data. Accuracy and recall of the deep learning model were verified, and as a result of the verification, and derived results that satisfy both recall and accuracy. In the future, we plan to continue the study based on clinical data of actual dementia patients, and the results of this study are expected to solve the dementia problem.
