Evaluation of Antioxidant Activity and Cytotoxicity in Mixture Extract of Artemisia asiatica Nakai and Moringa oleifera Lam

  • The purpose of this study was performed to evaluate antioxidant activity of the Artemisia asiatica Nakai and Moringa oleifera Lam mixture extract. Mixture extracts were manufactured by concentration and compared with a single extract (only the Artemisia asiatica Nakai mixture and only the Moringa oleifera Lam mixture). The experiments conducted Total polyphenol measurements, Total flavonoid measurements, DPPH radical scavenging activty, ABTS radical scavenging activty and LDH assay. The LDH assay assessment shows that all extracts are cells compared to controls. The toxicity was weak. Finally, The antioxidant capacity was rated higher than mixture extract of a single extract. Also, the optimized mixture was determined AM5 (Artemisia asiatica Nakai mixture: Moringa oleifera Lam mixture = 3:1). For extracts of AM5, Total phenol and flavonoid contents were 271.769±18.087 mg/g and 45.384±5.026 mg/g. and DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity were 70.8±6.496% and 77.1±9.634%. Therefore, it is expected that the value of the extract will increase as it increases its antioxidant activity if it is manufactured according to the appropriate ratio.

Effects of Activated Carbon on the Reduction of Benzo(a)pyrene in Artemisia argyi Extract

  • Background and objective: Artemisia argyi has a long history as an effective treatment for various diseases. The detection of environmental pollutant benzo(a)pyrene, a known human carcinogen, in the leaves of Artemisia argyi is cause for concern. For medicinal plant extracts, both a reduction of benzo(a)pyrene as well as the maintained effectiveness of the compound are important. Therefore, in this study, we propose an optimized process for the addition and filtration of activated carbon to reduce benzo(a)pyrene and change the contents of the indicating substance(jaceosidine and eupatilin). Methods: Artemisia argyi EtOH extract containing 36 ppb of benzo(a)pyrene was added to 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5% (w/w) of activated carbon for 120 min and filtered using an activated carbon filter 1, 2, 3, and 5 times respectively. The content of benzo(a)pyrene and indicating substances in Artemisia argyi extract were then measured with high performance liquid chromatography (fluorescence and UV detectors). Results: As the amounts of activated carbon powder and filtering cycles increased, the content of benzo(a)pyrene in the Artemisia argyi extract decreased. However, when activated carbon powder 1.5% was added to the extract, and when the activated carbon filter was filtered five times, the results were reduced by 15% and 30~40% respectively. The optimal extraction condition for reducing benzo(a)pyrene was adding 1.5% of activated carbon powder. This resulted in reducing benzo(a)pyrene by 83% and indicating substances by about 4%. Conclusions: Here we present a process for reducing benzo(a)pyrene in Artemisia argyi extract using activated carbon to reduce toxicity and minimize the loss of active ingredients. This approach has potential application within a manufacturing process of various medicinal plant extracts.

쑥(물쑥)추출물이 에탄올에 의한 흰쥐의 간 손상에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Artemisia selengensis Methanol Extract on Ethanol-Induced Hepatotoxicity in Rat Liver)

  • 물쑥추출물이 에탄올에 의한 횐쥐의 간손상에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위하여 정상군, 물쑥추출물 투여군, 에탄을 투여군 및 에탄올과 물쑥추출물 병합투여군으로 나누어 6주간 사육하여 식이 섭취량, 체중 및 간장의 무게, 혈청 중의 AST, ALT 및 ALP 활성, 간장 중의 TBA반응성 산물량, SOD, catalase, GSH-PX 및 xanthine oxidase의 활성 및 GSH의 함량에 미치는 영향을 관찰하였다 : 1) 에탄올 섭취군이 정상군 보다 체중 및 식이 섭취량이 유의적으로 감소되었다. 2) 물쑥추출물은 에탄올 투여로 증가된 휜쥐의 혈청 중 AST ALT의 활성을 에탄올 투여군에 비하여 유의성있는 감소 효과를 나타냈다(p<0.05). 또한 물쑥추출물은 증가된 간 TBA-반응성 물질 함량을 유의성있게 감소시켰다(p<0.05). 3) 물쑥추출물은 유리기 생성계의 효소인 xanthine oxidase 활성을 에탄올 투여군에 비하여 약 25% 정도 현저하게 감소시켰다(p<0.05). 그러나 유리기 해독계 요소인 SOD, catalase 및 GSH-PX 활성에 대해서는 약간의 변화는 있었으나 유의한 변화를 나타내지 않았다. 4) 물쑥추출물은 에탄을 투여로 감소된 간 GSH함량을 에탄올 투여군에 비하여 유의하게 증가시켰다. 이상의 실험 결과와 문헌상의 지견을 종합하여 볼 때 에탄올 투여로 증가된 간 지질과산화물 생성계 효소인 xanthine oxidase활성억제와 비효소적 항산화작용을 나타내는 GSH 함량을 증가시킴으로서 산화물에 대한 방어력이 증강되어 나타난 결과로 여겨지며, 또한 혈청 중의 AST, ALT및 ALP효소 활성을 유의성있게 감소시켰음은 물쑥추출물이 에탄올에 의한 간세포손상에 대한 방지 작용이 있는 것으로 사료된다.

인진쑥 물추출물의 조다당제에 의한 Melanin 생성억제 효과 (Inhibitory Effects of Crude Polysaccharide of Water Extract of Art on Melanin Biosynthesis)

  • Melanogenesis is a physiological process resulting in the synthesis of melanin pigment. We investigated the inhibitory effect of crude polysaccharide of water extract of Artemisia iwayomgi Kitamura (AI) on melanin biosystheies in B16/F10 melanoma cells. Crude polysaccharide of water extract of Artemisia iwayomgi Kitamura significantly inhibited tyrosinase activity and melanin contents with or without $\alpha$-MSH in vivo. Melanin contents and tyrosinase activity were decreased in a dose-dependent manner,These results show that crude polysaccharide of water extract of Artemisia iwayomgi Kitamura could be developed as skin whitening components of cosmetics.

단기간의 인진쑥 투여가 개의 혈액상에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Artemisia capillaris Extract on Hematological Changes in Dogs)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the hematological changes of the dogs when administrated excessive amount of the Artemisia capillaris extract for a short period. In this experiment, clinically healthy dogs(n = 20, average weight = 7.68 kg) were divided into 2 groups : Artemisia capillaris rude juice extract group(CR) and concentrated extract group(CE). They were inserted stomach tube and administrated the extracts (5 ml/kg) for 8 days. The followings are the results of this experiment.: 1). The number of red blood cell(RBC) was significantly (p<0.05) decreased in CE group on day 4, 5, 6, whereas CJE group showed significantly (p<0.05) difference on day 5. 2). The packed cell volume(PCV) and hemoglobin concentration were significantly (p<0.05) decreased in both groups during experimental periods. 3). The met hemoglobin was significantly (p < 0.05) increased from 12 hrs after administration to day 8 in CJE group wheres, it was significantly (p<0.05) increased on day 6,7 in CE group.

이진쑥 추출물의 병원성 세균에 대한 시험관내 항균효과 (Antimicrobial Effects of Artemisia capillaris Extracts on the Pathogenic Bacteria In Vitro)

  • Artemisia capillaris THUNB is a perennial herb that belongs to the family Compositae spp and the most common plant among the various herbal folk remedies used in treatment of abdominal pain, hepatitis, chronic liver disease, jaundice and coughing in Korea. In this study, antimicrobial effects of Artemisia capillaris extracts on the food poisoning bacteria were investigated for further clinical application, which is an alternative for the use of antibiotics and their unexpected resistance. Artemisia capillaris extract using ethyl acetate showed the highest antimicrobial effects on S. enteritidis, E. coli O157 : H7, L. monocytogenes and S. aureus. The chloroform extract showed strong effects on all kinds of bacteria; whereas ethanol and methanol extracts showed weaker effects. Finally, ether and water extracts showed the weakest effects under the same conditions. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ethyl acetate extract was 1 mg/mL for E. coli O157 : H7 and L. monocytogenes, and 2 mg/mL for S. enteritidis and S. aureus. The inhibitory effects on all the bacteria continued for 12 hours after incubation using 20 mg/mL and 30 mg/mL of ethyl acetate extract. The inhibitory effects continued maximally for 72 hours. The results of these studies indicate Artemisia capillaris extract exhibited excellent antimicrobial and inhibitory effects on the food poisoning pathogenic bacteria; S. enteritidis, E. coli O157 : H7, L. monocytogenes and S. aureus.

개똥쑥(Artemisia annua) 열탕추출물의 Di-caffeoylquinic Acid 및 Coumarin 성분 (Five Di-caffeoylquinic Acid Derivatives and a Coumarin from the Hot-water Extract of Artemisia annua)

  • Artemisia annua L. (Compositae) is an annual herb, which has been traditionally used as an antipyretic and hemostatic agent with the herbal medicine name of Cheong Ho (菁蒿) in Korea and China. In this study, five di-caffeoylquinic acid derivatives and a coumarin were determined from the hot-water extract of aerial parts of A. annua. The structures of isolates were elucidated to be 1,3-di-O-caffeoylqunic acid (1), 3,4-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (2), 3,5-di-O-caffeoylqiunic acid (3), 1,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (4) and 4,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (5) and scopoletin (6). The presence of 1,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (4) is firstly reported from A. annua in the current study.

Antinociceptive and Sedative Hypnotic effect of Artemisia pallens Wall

  • The present investigation was carried out to evaluate the antinociceptive and sedative - hypnotic effect of a vacuum dried methanol extract of aerial parts of Artemisia pallens. In the tail-flick method with Swiss albino mice the methanol extract at the doses of (1500 mg/kg, 2000 mg/kg, and 2500 mg/kg) showed significant antinociceptive activity. Significant potentiation of Pentobarbitone sodium - induced sleeping time was observed in mice on co-administration of the various doses of the methanol extract of Artemisia pallens.

개똥쑥 추출물을 첨가한 김치의 품질특성 (Quality characteristics of kimchi with Artemisia annua extracts)

  • 본 연구에서는 항암 등의 기능성이 우수한 것으로 알려진 개똥쑥 추출물을 첨가하여 김치를 제조하여 김치 품질특성 변화를 살펴보았다. 개똥쑥의 물 또는 70% 에탄올로 추출물 1 또는 2% 첨가하여 김치를 제조하고 10, $15^{\circ}C$에서 20일간 숙성하면서 pH, 산도, 환원당, 생균수 및 젖산균수의 변화 및 관능조사를 하였다. 개똥쑥의 첨가여부와는 관계없이 pH, 산도 환원당, 생균수 및 젖산균수는 저장 4~6일까지 증가하고 이후 완만히 증가하는 경향을 보여 개똥쑥 추출물이 김치 품질에 미치는 영향은 크지 않은 것으로 나타났으며 개똥쑥 추출물 첨가 김치의 적정 숙성온도 및 기간은 $10^{\circ}C$에서 10일간이었다. 관능검사의 경우 맛, 향 등의 기호도에서 전반적으로 개똥쑥 물 또는 에탄올 추출물 1%를 첨가하여 제조하는 것이 좋았으나 개똥쑥 물 또는 에탄올 추출물 2%를 첨가한 김치는 쓴 맛과 검은 색 등으로 인해 기호도가 떨어진 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 개똥쑥 물 또는 에탄올 추출물은 김치 제조에 1%를 김치 제조에 첨가하는 것이 적당한 것으로 사료된다.

  • As an attempt to develop new functional health beverage by using medicinal herb, Artemisia capillaris, we investigated the effect of scopoletin in Artemisia capillaris on vessel and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) of rats ingesting health drink prepared with Artemisia capillaris extracts and various ingredients. Artemisia capillaris extract decreased the vessel contraction and increased rCBF significantly. The extracts were grouped by heat temperature and mixed ratio and tested their respective characteristics. Then each condition was combined and produced the most effective one. The drink produced consisted of Artemisia capillaris extract 42%, honey 9.8%, citric acid 0.035%, cyclodextrin 1.47% and water. Brix, pH and acidity of the product were 9.2, 4.4 and 0.04%, respectively, This drink scored to have highest level on overall acceptance by the sensory evaluation. The above results showed that development of such functional beverage using Artemisia capillaris can be used as a functional material improving blood circulation in beverage industry.
