One for All - Artemisia absinthium (Afsanteen) "A Potent Unani Drug"

  • The therapeutic use of the wormwood plant Artemisia absinthium L. dates back to at least Roman times. There are more than 200 plants in the genus Artemisia- including southern wormwood, petite wormwood and Grande wormwood and encompasses about 500 species. The best-known species of wormwood is Artemisia absinthium, native to temperate Eurasia and North Africa and is branded for its extreme bitterness. It is a magical greens booze used as carminative to support healthy appetite, balances healthy flora, cleanse the digestive tract of parasite and toxins. It possesses anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective, anti-helminthic and anti-depressant activity. Thujone excites nervous system when taken in small amount. Due to contrary history of wormwood, its application in individuals should be preceded by a thorough and cautious risk-benefit analysis. In this appraisal an attempt is done to validate scientifically, mentioned therapeutic potential of Artemisia absinthium in classical Unani literature using PubMed, Science Direct researches.

Antioxidant and anticoagulant activities of Ganghwa medicinal mugwort (Artemisia princeps Pampanini) extract (강화 약쑥 (Artemisia princeps Pampanini) 추출물의 항산화 및 항응고 활성)

  • In vitro antioxidant and anticoagulant activities of 50% ethanolic extract from Ganghwa medicinal mugwort (Artemisia princeps Pampanini) were investigated. The polyphenol and flavonoid contents of the mugwort extract were 106.9±3.3 and 34.1±0.4 mg/g-extract, respectively. The mugwort extract possessed a potent scavenging activity against radicals and nitrite, reducing power, and lipid peroxidation inhibition activity in a concentration-dependent manner. Also the mugwort extract delayed the plasma coagulation time through the inhibition of common coagulation pathway in a dose-dependent manner.

  • The purpose of this study was performed to evaluate antioxidant activity of the Artemisia asiatica Nakai and Moringa oleifera Lam mixture extract. Mixture extracts were manufactured by concentration and compared with a single extract (only the Artemisia asiatica Nakai mixture and only the Moringa oleifera Lam mixture). The experiments conducted Total polyphenol measurements, Total flavonoid measurements, DPPH radical scavenging activty, ABTS radical scavenging activty and LDH assay. The LDH assay assessment shows that all extracts are cells compared to controls. The toxicity was weak. Finally, The antioxidant capacity was rated higher than mixture extract of a single extract. Also, the optimized mixture was determined AM5 (Artemisia asiatica Nakai mixture: Moringa oleifera Lam mixture = 3:1). For extracts of AM5, Total phenol and flavonoid contents were 271.769±18.087 mg/g and 45.384±5.026 mg/g. and DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity were 70.8±6.496% and 77.1±9.634%. Therefore, it is expected that the value of the extract will increase as it increases its antioxidant activity if it is manufactured according to the appropriate ratio.

  • Flavonol galactosides were isolated from the EtOAc fraction of Artemisia apiacea by repeated column chromatography. Their structures were elucidated as $isorhamnetin-3-O-{\beta}-D-galactoside$ (1) and $quercetin-3-O-{\beta}-D-galactoside$ (2) by chemical and spectroscopic analysis. This is the first report on the isolation of compound 2 from this plant.

  • Ethanol ($70\%$) extract of Caesalpinia sappan L. and Forsythiae suspensa Vahl. showed $84\%$ and $72\%$ of anti-urease activity against Helicobacter pylori, respectively. Among the fraction of Artemisia asiatica Nakai extract using methanol ($80\%$), water, ethyl acetate and butanol ethyl acetate fraction showed $90\%$ of the anti-urease activity.

  • To examine the effect of Artemisia princeps var orientalis on cardiovascular system, cadiovascular response from its water extracts were studied in the atria and aortae of normal rats. The extracts diminished spontaneous beat and contractile force in the left and right atria, and caused the relaxation of thoraic aortae. As for the blood pressure, the mugwort extract had a descending effect.

  • Artemisia vulgaris essential oil exhibited a strong metal chelating activity but withlow reducing power, and radical scavenging activity. However, a gradual increase in the radical scavenging activity was obtained with increasing concentration and reaction time.

  • $\alpha$-Linolenic acid ethylester, $C_{19}$ spiroketalenolether polyyne, herniarin and steroid were isolated from the leaves of Artemisia selengensis (Compositae). The structures of the compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic evidence. Liver protective effects of these constituents were studied using galactosamine and CCI$_{4}$-induced cytotoxicity in primary cultured rat hepatocytes.
