Mongol Impact on China: Lasting Influences with Preliminary Notes on Other Parts of the Mongol Empire

  • This essay, based on an oral presentation, provides the non-specialist, with an evaluation of the Mongols' influence and China and, to a lesser extent, on Russia and the Middle East. Starting in the 1980s, specialists challenged the conventional wisdom about the Mongol Empire's almost entirely destructive influence on global history. They asserted that Mongols promoted vital economic, social, and cultural exchanges among civilizations. Chinggis Khan, Khubilai Khan, and other rulers supported trade, adopted policies of toleration toward foreign religions, and served as patrons of the arts, architecture, and the theater. Eurasian history starts with the Mongols. Exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art confirmed that the Mongol era witnessed extraordinary developments in painting, ceramics, manuscript illustration, and textiles. To be sure, specialists did not ignore the destruction and killings that the Mongols engendered. This reevaluation has prompted both sophisticated analyses of the Mongols' legacy in Eurasian history. The Ming dynasty, the Mongols' successor in China, adopted some of the principles of Mongol military organization and tactics and were exposed to Tibetan Buddhism and Persian astronomy and medicine. The Mongols introduced agricultural techniques, porcelain, and artistic motifs to the Middle East, and supported the writing of histories. They also promoted Sufism in the Islamic world and influenced Russian government, trade, and art, among other impacts. Europeans became aware, via Marco Polo who traveled through the Mongols' domains, of Asian products, as well as technological, scientific, and philosophical innovations in the East and were motivated to find sea routes to South and East Asia.

The Make-up illustrations Based on Deconstruction (해체주의를 응용한 메이크업 일러스트레이션)

  • This study aims to suggest new directions for the development of make-up design by understanding characteristics of deconstruction make-up and to search for new directions and methods in theme expressions and design conceptions by making illustrations with deconstruction themes. This study examines conceptual characteristics of Derrida's deconstruction, and analyzes the various deconstruction make-up styles through the famous fashion magazines such as Beauty Collection, Collections, Fem, Modain, and Vogue since 1997. The make-up illustration works in this study were made depending on these styles. At first, the nature of deconsouction make-up can be explained as deconstruction of existing methods, deconstruction of the sexes and deconstruction of history or ethnicity. The deconstruction of existing methods can be subdivided into decadence make-up, detester make-up, graphic make-up and collage make-up. Deconstruction of the sexes can be explained androgynous make-up. Deconstruction of history or ethnicity is subdivided into white makeup, ancient Egyptian dark eye make-up and raceless make-up. The deconstruction make-up illustrations present infinite possibilities in expression styles through three dimensional expressions and media mixture using not only drawing materials including watercolor, poster-color, and color pencils but also objets including magazines, coarse fabrics, screentone, beads, suede, sand and so on. The study shows that since deconstruction make-up illustrations are not limited to depiction-centered expressions, they serve creating unique images and future inspirations.

  • Culture is being created and consumed as several form by human development. Populace is forming through movement of mass of people to specific place which influenced by urbanization and industrialization. Since cultural products are created on base of economic principles cultural content makers are make culture products after lot of study and analyze. In early days popular culture was accepted only by the meaning of the text which has settled already via country or company which was holding the capital. But today we can apply culture products freely by the power of public opinion and media art's growth. Especially fandom is giving the opportunity to consume the image of cultural products actively and offering the good influence to make it by several ways of activities to the culture producers. In this study, consumption as a cultural group formed by the fandom in public will be transformed into participatory groups by the influence of cultural activities with fan art reproduction. These changes in the consumption of culture products will make it in positive way. Thereby culture creator who thinks fandom as a group of culture capital maker only use it now for the indicator for predicting success of culture products. Will find out in this study how culture consumption is accomplishing by fan fiction and fan illustration in the fandom culture and how reproduced fan art is affects to culture creators.

  • This study examined the trends of an illustration artist's art marketing widening its area in recent years and proposes a design concept of color cosmetics. Art marketing is a type of culture marketing and means marketing through exhibitions, performances and other artistic activities. Free artistic sensibility expression in which the artistic motif is melted into a product beyond the works of a particular artist, and the product, in turn, can be reflected in the canvas, has attracted attention. The works of illustrators are widening their area into the item in life not canvas. This paper proposes the color cosmetics design that reflect art marketing. The main target who proposed the design concept was trend-oriented and in their early to mid-20s with a strong personality, showing a strong tendency of attracting attention and being recognized. To emphasize the design concept of color cosmetics packaging design, the progressive image of the target class was reflected through brilliant and intense color combination. The cultural value and meaning are provided as the artistic mood becomes a part of life.

  • This study aimed to identify visuality changes in the $21^{st}century$ digital visual media art through the expension of digital frames based on visuality represented by Cartesian perspectivalism in the modern age. The visuality of perspective, camera obscura and panorama, which are called modern visual systems, was analyzed to illustrate each characteristic from a viewpoint of a seeing subject. These characteristics of the visual systems were restructured to meet the visuality of the digital era through the illustrations of Lacan's gaze. In addition, the characteristics of frames found in the $21^{st}century$ digital visual media art were identified, and they were categorized into and illustrated from physical, convergent and interactional viewpoints. The outcomes were classified into the $21^{st}century$ digital frame types, and new $21^{st}$century digital visual illustrations were suggested based on the results.

  • Nous conduisons tous les codes graphiques specifiques d'un genre de la bande dessinee coreenne, sounziang manwha, e la "decorativite". Afin de mieux rendre compte de cette decorativite, nous suivons un chemin qui aborde des divers etats de cette specificite. Etant donne que la decorativite n'est pas originaire, ni propre totalement au genre, nous nous interessons e ses formes differentes dans les genres precedentes : dessin de mode, dessin lyrique, illustration, affiche, shojo manga, etc. Ils nous permettent e voir des ressemblances et des differences dans les styles graphiques. Nous parvenons enfin e comprendre ce que la decorativite en bande dessinee est attachee intimemnt aux traits fictifs et irreels du diegese.

  • Purpose: As introducing a case on extracurricular medical education using artists as instructors, we purposed to make significant implication on the technology-centered medical education. Methods: A case on extracurricular medical education using artists as instructors was introduced and the response of participants among medical students was presented and analyzed. Results: 25 medical students and 5 artists participated in this extracurricular medical education program. Each 5 artists' special area were an oil painting, an illustration, a documentary photo, a play, and an animation Participants' satisfaction of this program was high among medical students. They thought the time with an artist as a significant opportunity for understanding not only human-being but also himself or herself. Conclusions: The application of this learner-centered and extracurricular education program using artists as instructors needed further consideration in medical education. Medical students' meeting with artists can fill the lost art of medicine.

  • Hatching is an effective artistic tool for conveying shape and shading by placing parallel line strokes on drawing objects. We present a simple and effective per-pixel image-space hatching method to draw line strokes using given stroke directions. Our hatching method directly runs on the screen and it can efficiently render highly complex scenes in hatching styles. We implement the algorithm using a pixel shader in a modern GPU.

  • This study analyzed silhouette expressions in the fashion illustrations by theory based on results of studying the characteristics of the forms and meanings of the silhouette expressions in art historically. For the actual considering this study collected and categorized fashion illustrations from 1990 to the present limitedly, and clarified the meaning of the silhouette expressions. Those expressions in fashion illustrations were categorized to the 5 items; black & white silhouette, color silhoutte, pattern silhouette, paper silhouette, line silhouette. Silhouette expressions of the fashion illustrations were categorized to 3 items: metaphorical fantasy, essential minimization, anonymous representation.

  • With the continuous advancement of computer technology, deep learning models have emerged as innovative tools in shaping various aspects of architectural design. Recognizing the distinctive perspective of children, which differs significantly from that of adults, this paper contends that conventional standards may not always be the most suitable approach in designing urban structures tailored for children. The primary objective of this study is to leverage neural style networks within the design process, specifically adopting the artistic viewpoint found in children's illustrations. By combining the aesthetic paradigm of urban architecture with inspiration drawn from children's aesthetic preferences, the aim is to unearth more creative and subversive aesthetics that challenge traditional norms. The selected context for exploration is the landmark buildings in Qingdao City, Shandong Province, China. Employing the neural style network, the study uses architectural elements of the chosen buildings as content images while preserving their inherent characteristics. The process involves artistic stylization inspired by classic children's illustrations and images from children's picture books. Acting as a conduit for deep learning technology, the research delves into the prospect of seamlessly integrating architectural design styles with the imaginative world of children's illustrations. The outcomes aim to provide fresh perspectives and effective support for the artistic design of contemporary urban buildings.
