Suppression of interfacial crack for foam core sandwich panel with crack arrester

  • Since delamination often propagates at the interfacial layer between a surface skin and a foam core, a crack arrester is proposed for the suppression of the delamination. The arrester has a semi-cylindrical shape and is arranged in the foam core and is attached to the surface skin. Here, energy release rates and complex stress intensity factors are calculated using finite element analysis. Effects of the arrester size and its elastic moduli on the crack suppressing capability are investigated. Considerable reductions of the energy release rates at the crack tip are achieved as the crack tip approached the leading edge of the crack arrester. Thus, this new concept of a crack arrester may become a promising device to suppress crack initiation and propagation of the foam core sandwich panels.

154kV 변전소에서 피뢰장치의 뇌서지특성 해석 (A Study on the Analysis of the Lightning Surge Characteristics of Arresters in a 154kV Substation)

  • This paper describes the characteristic evaluation of 154kV lightning arrester developed by domestic technology. To prove the protective ability of lightning arrester developed, various overvoltages were analyzed for A and B arrester were being used now at 154kV air and gas insulation substation, and for arrester developed. The results obtained by the various simulations show that the developed arrester has the effective protective ability and reducing ability of the overvoltage as A and B arrester, nevertheless there are somewhat differences among three kinds of arresters. Accordingly, it is evaluated that the arrester developed by domestic technology secured reliability can be installed actually at 154kV substation. In this paper, EMTP/ATP was used for simulation.

  • This paper presents the thermal characteristics of ZnO arrester blocks under the AC voltage. The leakage currents of ZnO arrester blocks were measured as a function of time. The temperature distribution of ZnO arrester blocks were observed by the forward looking infrared camera. The degradation and thermal runaway of ZnO arrester blocks were related to the temperature of ZnO arrster blocks which depended on heat generation and dissipation. As a result, the degradation and thermal runaway of ZnO arrester blocks are associated with the temperature and leakage current of ZnO arrester blocks.

  • The primary function of ZnO lightning arrester is to protect transmission and distribution equipment from overvoltages and to absorb electrical energy resulting from lightning or switching surges and form temporary overvoltage. However, ZnO lightning arrester are known to exhibit an increases in resistive current with time, the rate of increase being exacerbated with increasing applied voltage and ambient temperature. So, it is important to the leakage current measurement of ZnO lightning arrester. In addition, since the resistive leakage current caused by deterioration of ZnO lightning arrester mainly caused an increase of the third harmonic component, thereby it is possible the arrester degradation diagnosis by measuring the third harmonic component in the total leakage current. The leakage current and third harmonic component are measured and used to investigate the degradation diagnosis of ZnO element of arrester. Also the SEM photography is used to investigate the change of crystal structure of ZnO element with degradation.

  • The paper introduces a new Distribution Class ground lead disconnector design that not only extends the claimable detonation range well below the 20 amps specified in industry standards, but is very durable when exposed to severe arrester durability tests. Finally, this paper shows how this next generation disconnector interacts with the connected arrester to improve the overvoltage withstand capability of the arrester assembly.

  • The main objective of this paper is to module design and pressure relief test a new type of polymer gapless surge arrester for power distribution line. Metal oxide surge arrester for most electric power system applications, power distribution line and electric train are now being used extensively to protect overvoltage due to lightning. Surge arresters with porcelain housing must not have explosive breakage of the housing to minimize damage to other equipment when subjected to internal high short circuit current. When breakdown of gapless elements in a surge arrester occurs due to flashover, fault short current flows through the arrester and internal pressure of the arrester rises. The pressure rise can usually be limited by fitting a pressure relief diaphragm and transferring the arc from the inside to the outside of the housing. However, there is possibility of porcelain fragmentation caused by the thermal shock, pressure rise, etc. Non-fragmenting of the housing is the most desired way to prevent damage to other equipment. The pressure change which is occurred by flashover become discharge energy. This discharge energy raises to damage arrester housing and arrester housing is dispersed as small fragment. Therefore, the pressure relief design is requested to obstruct housing dispersion.

  • In this paper, we develope a diagnosis device for ZnO arrester by detecting the leakage current in service. To diagnose the deterioration of ZnO arrester, the device detects the total leakage current which flows between an arrester and ground, and analyzes the resistive current(third harmonic current) which is an indicator of deterioration of ZnO arrester. We use the optical cable which can transfer a detected data without a noise, also use a microprocessor for a data storage, processing, and trend analysis. Experiment are executed to verify its performance in laboratory and the results show that the diagnosis device exactly detects the total leakage current and the resistive current, so it can diagnose the deterioration of ZnO arrester. Also the leakage current of ZnO arrester is detected using the developed diagnostic device in field, these results are presented.

Finally. this paper shows how this next generation disconnector interacts with the connected arrester to improve the overvoltage withstand capability of the arrester assembly. The interaction of the disconnector grading capacitor with the series-connected arrester metal oxide disc elements actually improves the arrester assembly temporary overvoltage withstand capability, making the design less vulnerable to TOV failures. Since the vast majority of distribution class arresters are sold domestically with ground lead disconnectors, this design improvement in the disconnector to improve detonation reliability also translates into a significantly improved distribution class arrester design.

  • In this work, in order to investigate the effect of lightning impulse currents on ZnO surge arrester. and the deterioration characteristics of ZnO surge arrester, 8/20 [${\mu}s$], 2.5 [kA] impulse currents were applied to the ZnO surge arrester under test. The leakage currents of ZnO surge arrester were measured and ZnO element was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. As a result, the resistive leakage current of ZnO surge arrester was increased with the injection number of lightning impulse currents.
