Positive-Type Photosensitive Polyimide Based on a Photobase Generator Containing Oxime-Urethane Groups as a Photosensitive Compound

  • The chemical structure of a semi-aromatic polyimide-I, which was prepared by the chemical imidization of cyclopentanetetracarboxylic dianhydride and 2,2-bis(4-aminophenyl)hexafluoropropane, was characterized by $^{13}C-NMR$ spectroscopy. The chemically imidized polyimide-I was used for the preparation of a photosensitive polyimide (PSPI) through the addition of benzophenone and benzophenone oxime hexamethylene diurethane (BOHD), a photobase generator containing oxime-urethane groups. The polyimide-I film containing benzophenone and BOHD was not soluble in 2.38 wt% tetrabutylammonium hydroxide solution in $H_2O$. However, it became soluble following irradiation with 310 nm UV light. A positive tone image with a resolution of $5{\mu}m$ was obtained with this PSPI, having sensitivity($D_c$) of $1.2J/cm^2$ and contrast(${\gamma}_p$) of 1.08. Thus, a polyimide, which is not intrinsically photosensitive, can become photosensitive through the addition of a photobase generator containing oxime-urethane groups as a photosensitive compound.

Effects of Thermal Imidization and Annealing on Liquid Crystal Alignment ever Rubbed Polyimide Layers: Change in the Pretilt Angle

  • The fabrication of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels involves several thermal processes such as imidization of the alignment layer (AL) and annealing of the rubbed polyimide AL. The nature of these processes on the LC alignment, especially on the pretilt angle (Θ$\_$p/) has been systematically studied, employing various types of polyimide structures. The imidization effect depends on the nature of polyimid precursors; Θ$\^$p/ increases with the degree of the imidization for the main-chain type of ALs, due to the decrease in the surface polarity, but this relation is not applicable to the alkylated ones in which the steric effect at the AL surface by the aliphatic side chains is dominant. Annealing of the rubbed polyimide AL deteriorates its rubbing-induced molecular orientation and subsequently the overlying LC alignment, resulting in the decrease in Θ$\_$p/. Especially, annealing of the LC cell affects the LC-AL interaction as well as the AL orientation and thus its effect on LC alignment depends sensitively on the nature of LC-polyimide interface; aromatic moiety in the polyimide structure gives better thermal stability of LC alignment while fluorinated polyimide ALs induce the less stable alignment.

  • We synthesized the two types of photoalignment material of high thermal resistance with hydroxyl aromatic polyimide, and studied the liquid crystal (LC) aligning capabilities on the photopolymer layers. Also, electro-optical (EO) performances for the twisted-nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) photoaligned with linearly polarized UV exposure were investigated. A good LC alignment with UV exposure on the two types of photopolymer surface can be obtained. The Voltage-transmittance (V-T) curve in the photoaligned TN cell with UV exposure was different from two type. The response time of photoaligned TN cell was measured about 21 ms in two alkyl chain and about 15ms in four alkyl chain.

주쇄에 광분해성 방향족 술포닐옥시이미드기를 함유한 감광성 폴리이미드 (Photosensitive Polyimides Having Aromatic Sulfonyloxyimide Groups in the Main Chain)

  • 고분자 주쇄에 cyclobutane 또는 페닐과 방향족 술포닐옥시이미드 구조를 갖는 감광성 폴리이미드를 합성하여 광분해 특성에 있어서 고분자의 구조가 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 폴리이미드는 N-히드록시와 염화 술포닐의 축중합에 의해 제조하였다. 합성된 폴리이미드는 25$0^{\circ}C$까지 열분해가 일어나지 않고 안정하였다. 254nm의 광조사에 따른 폴리이미드의 광분해는 분광학적 측정에 의해 N-O 결합의 절단 또는 이미드 moiety의 계열에 기인되는 것을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구의 폴리이미드는 포지티브형의 광분해성 고분자로의 활용이 가능한 것이 확인되었으며, 특히 pyromellitic diimide moiety를 함유하는 폴리이미드의 포지티브 화상은 높은 감도와 해상도를 나타내었다.

  • Studies have been conducted to explore thermal imidization of polyamic acid. Aromatic polyimides are well recognized as high temperature linear polymers, and polyimide are used as structural materials, fibers, and adhesive. Two different kinds of polyimide were prepared by theimidization of polyamic acid which were synthesized from 2,2-bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]- hexafluoropropane, 2,2-bis [4-(4-aminophenxy)phenyl] - hexamethylpropane and caprolactam and pyromelliti dianhydride under N-Methly-pyrrolidinone solvent. Polyamic acids were converted to polyimides containing imide bond by thermal imidization. The weight 50% loss temperatures of polyimide by TGA thermogram were recorded in the range of 700 ~ 720$^{\circ}$C in nitrogen gas. According, as a results, we conclued polyamic acid were cycliation after H2O molecule separationed, and this polyimide film could be used for Printed Circuit Boand.

  • A series novel films of polyimide (PI) and co-polyimide (Co-PI) containing fluorine with colorless, flexible properties was prepared by a two-step process from various commercial aromatic monomers such as 4,4'-(Hexafluoro iso propylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA), 2,2'-Bis(Trifluoromethyl) benzidine (TFDB), 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane (AH6FP) and Bis(4-(3-aminophenoxy)phenyl)sulfone (BAS). Furthermore, these obtained transparent and flexible Co-PI films exhibited excellent thermal stability with the decomposition temperature (at 5% weight loss) around of $500^{\circ}C$ and the glass transition temperature ($T_g$) in the range of $275-350^{\circ}C$.

A Highly Sensitive Humidity Sensor Using a Modified Polyimide Film

  • This paper presents the design, fabrication sequence and measurement results of a highly sensitive capacitive-type humidity sensor using a polyimide film without hydrophobic elements. The structure of the humidity sensor is MIM (metalinsulator-metal). For a high sensitivity, a modified aromatic polyimides as a moisture absorbing layer has been synthesized instead of using general polyimides containing hydrophobic elements. The polyimide film was obtained by synthesizing and thermally polymerizing polyamic acid composed of m-pyromellitic dianhydride, phenelenediamine and dimethylacetamide. Characteristics of fabricated sensors which include sensitivity, hysteresis and stability have been measured. The measurement result shows the percent normalized capacitance change of 0.37/%RH over a range from 10 to 90%RH, hysteresis of 0.77% over the same %RH range and maximum drift of 0.25% at 50%RH. The result shows that the developed humidity sensor can be applied to evaluate a hermeticity of various sensors and actuator systems as well as micro packages.

폴리이미드-액정 계면의 특성에 따른 액정 배향의 특성 및 안정성 (Characteristics and Stability of Liquid Crystal Alignment for Interfacial Properties of Polyimide-Liquid Crystal)

  • 러빙에 의해 유도된 네마틱 액정의 배향 특성과 그 안정성이 액정-폴리이미드 계면 특성과 어떠한 관계가 있는지를 조사하였다. 합성된 5 종류의 폴리이미드 특성을 분석하고 폴리이미드 배향막에서의 액정 배향의 균일성, 선경사각, 정착 에너지, 그리고 열 안정성을 측정 조사하였다. 러빙된 폴리이미드는 강한 정착의 액정 배향을 유도하고 액정 배향의 특성과 안정성은 배향막 표면에서의 액정과 폴리이미드 간의 분자 차원의 상호작용에 의해 결정된다는 것을 확인하였다. 폴리이미드의 유연성의 증가는 이미드화를 촉진시키며 액정의 선경사각과 배향 안정성을 증대시킨다. 반면에, 폴리이미드의 플루오르화는 액정의 배향성 및 배향 안정성을 감소시키는 것으로 나타났다. 폴리이미드의 방향족과 지방족 고리 이무수물 구조에 따른 액정 배향의 특성과 안정성에는 뚜렷한 차이가 나타나지 않았다.

Photoinitiator-free Photosensitive Polyimide Gate Insulator for Organic Thin Film Transistor

  • We have prepared and investigated the properties of photoinitiator-free photosensitive polyimide gate insulatos for organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). The precursor was prepared from a dianhydride, 3,3',4,4'-Benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) and novel aromatic diamine, 7-(3,5-diaminobenzoyloxy) coumarine (DA-CM). Photo-patternability of the polyimide precursor film and surface morphology of the films before and after photo-patterning process were investigated and negative pattern with a resolution of 50 ${\mu}m$ was obtained nicely. In addition, we have fabricated OTFTs with pentacene and photosensitive polyimide as a semiconductor and a gate insulator; respectively. According to the device geometry, the ${\mu}$, current modulation ratio and subthreshold swing of the devices were around 0.2${\sim}$0.4 $cm^2$/Vs, more than $10^5$ and around 3${\sim}$5 V/dec, respectively.

Polyimide(PI)LB막의 MIM구조 소자내에서의 switching전도특성 (Switching conduction characteristics of PI LB Film in MIM junctions)

  • The present work is concerned with the switching conduction characteristics of PI LB films in metal insulator metal sandwiches. By applying various DC voltage bias to MIM junctions, conduction characteristics of junctions can be changed between the high-voltage low-current(off) condition, the low-voltage high-current (on) condition and the medium(mid) condition. Switching conduction characteristics can be also observed in MIM junctions employing some aromatic compounds as insulators. Switching conduction characteristics is assumed to be owing to the existence of aromatic rings, space charge in films, impurities on metal-insulator interface, and difference in work functions of base and top electrodes metal. To study the conduction process of on, off, and mid conductions, we measured I-V, d$^{2}$V/d I$^{2}$-V characteristics of junctions with several different top electrodes under various temperatures. Small conductance changes of junctions can be measured by observing the second derivative, d$^{2}$V/dI$^{2}$, of I-V curve. A dynamical technique is used to get the second derivatives. That is, a finite modulation of the current is applied to the junctions and the second harmonic of the voltage is detected.
