  • This work concerns ecological studies on the larvae of the ark shell, Anadara broughtonii(SCHRENCK), in the aea adjacent to Gajyo-do in Jinhae Bay. Marine environmental factors, namely, temperatue, salinity, depth, and tidal current were observed in connection with the larval distributions. Water temperature appeared to be one of the main factors that influence the spawning activity. The numbers of the drifting larvae fluctuated greatly during the study period. The trend, however, was for numbers to be low in early summern, increasing in mid summer, and reaching a peak in late summer, at high bottom water temperature and low bottom salinities. Significantly increased numbers of the drifting larvae were observed during the period in which the bottom water temperatures and salinities were very close to those at the surface. the numbers of the drifting larvae showed a positive relationship with velocities of the water mass within the range of 0∼20 cm/sec. It was also noticed that the drifting larvae were relatively abundant in the area of eddy motion.

  • In order to know the biological effect of effluent from shipyard and the adjacent stream water on four organisms (flatfish, rockfish, sea squirt and arkshell) cultured around the shipyard, lethal rate and DNA damage were measured after 48 hr exposure and carried out by a single cell gel electrophoresis, namely comet assay. $LC_{50}$ (48 hr) could not be calculated in any organism 48 hours after exposure to effluent from shipyard and stream water, because all organism showed a lethal rate lower than 20%. Regardless of no acute toxicity, DNA damage of flatfish and rockfish was detected higher in Jang-Pyoung stream than in control, whereas sea squirt revealed higher DNA damage in laundry waste water. From these results, Jang-Pyoung stream seemed to have a relatively higher genotoxicity rather than effluent from shipyard.

  • This study was performed to assess the levels of the Cr and Co in fisheries caught from the some areas of west coast in Korea. The samples were 26 kinds of fishes, 19 kindly of Mollusca and 3 kinds of Crustacea. They were ashed with 5 ml $HNO_3$ and then wet-decomposed with 10 ml of a mixture of $HNO_3:H_2SO_4:HClO_4$ (10:1:4). After ashing of samples, the amounts of Cr and Co in the samples were determined by ICP-AES analysis. The moisture content of molluscans was significantly higher than that of crustaceans (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference among fisheries in the Cr content. And the Co content of crustaceans was significantly higher than that of fishes and molluscans (p<0.001). There was no significance between contents of Cr and Co in fisheries. The Cr content of Arkshell was 422.00 ppm, which was the most amount compared with those of the other samples. And the Co in Myong-Ge was 3.78 ppm, which was the most amount. Areliscus honaleus (Cr:2.76 ppm, Co:0.97 ppm), Solen (Cr:6.56 ppm, Co:1.59 ppm) and dried barley shrimp (Cr:1.06 ppm, Co:0.90 ppm) contained great amount of Cr and Co.

  • To assess the effects of environmental factors on the sustainability of cultured ark shell Scapharca broughtonii production, we investigated the habitat characteristics of shellfish-farming bays (Gangjin Bay, Yeoja Bay, Keoje Bay and Deukryang Bay). We measured the physiochemical parameters (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, chemical oxygen demand and Chlorophyll a) and the geochemical characteristics (chemical oxygen demand, ignition loss, C/N ratio and C/S ratio). Surface sediments were collected from several shellfish-farming bays to examine the geochemical characteristics of both the benthic environment and heavy metal pollution. The grain sizes for Gangjin Bay, Yeoja Bay and Keoje Bay were similar, at the ratio of silt and clay in comparison with Deukryang bay of it. The C/N ratio was more than 5.9, reflecting the range arising from the mix of marine organisms and organic matter. The C/S ratio (more than 4.2) showed that the survey area had anoxic or sub-anoxic bottom conditions. The index of accumulation rate (Igeo) of the metals showed that those research areas can be classified as heavily polluted, heavily to moderately polluted, or more or less unpolluted, respectively. We suggested that the growth of ark shell Scapharca broughtonii in the shellfish-farming bay was effected by the various environmental conditions.

  • This study was performed to determine the amount of aluminum, which is one of the factors of Alzheimer's disease, In some fishes caught from some areas of the west coast in Korea. The 46 aquatic products were composed of fishes, molluscs, and salt-fermented products (jeot-gal). The 24 fishes were Hickory shad, Gobies, Pomfref, Atkafish, Flounder, Jambeng-ie Monk fish, Yellow hair tail, Mackerel, Bartailed flathead, Alaska pollack, Brown croaker, Eel, Fine-spotted flounder, Black spotted grouper, Sea-eel, Pacific saury, Areliscus honaleus, Small boil-dried anchovy, Croaker, Hair tail, Sea bream genuine, Motleystrip rainbowfish, and Bastard halibut. The 15 Molluscs were Whip-arm octopus, Sea arrow, Common squid, Han chi, Cuttle fish, Turban shell, Pond snail, Orient calm, Surf calm, Butter calm, Crib shell, Oyster, Egg cockle, Little neck calm, and Arkshell. The 7 salt-fermented products were salt-fermented Shrimp, Little neck, Oyster, Shad, Gonjeng-ie, Hqangsegi, and Squid. All of them were ashed with 5$m\ell$ HNO$_3$ and then with 10$m\ell$ ternary solution (HNO$_3$ : H$_2$SO$_4$ : HClO$_4$= 10 : 1 : 4). After ashing of the samples, the aluminum amount were measured by ICP. The aluminum amount of molluscs was significantly higher than that of fishes and salt-fermented products(p<0.01). The aluminum amount of Orient calm and Healak in molluscs were 827.70, 812.55ppm, respectively, which were the most amounts compared nth that of the other samples. But the aluminum amounts of Bartailed flathead and Sea bream, genuine In fishes were 0.98, 0.97ppm, respectively, which were the least amounts compared with that of other samples. This study was limited within 46 aquatic samples, therefore I hope there will be wider efforts to determine about auminum amount in broade range of aquatic foods for the prevention of Alzheimer's disease.

  • Effect of water temperature, salt and $MgCl_2$ concentration on sand ejection characteristics of short neck clam, Luditapes philippinarum was investigated. Unlike other shell fish such as red shell, arkshell and surf clam, treatment of short neck clam with sea water was evaluated not effective as sand ejection conditions. Sand ejection activity of short neck clam was shown effective at $2.5\%$ NaCl (pH 8.0) at $25^{\circ}C$. This activity was enhanced about 1.57 times when 50 mM $MgCl_2$ were added to the above mentioned conditions. But the extent of sand ejection activity was shown higher in the order of sea water $(3.2\%\;salt)+20mM\;MgCl_2$, sea water $(3.2\%\;salt),\;2.5\%\;NaCl+50mM\;MgCl_2$, treatments. Therefore, it was suggested that habitat conditions and Mg ions could be responsible for biological activity and concominant sand ejection of short neck clam.

  • Organic matters as COD, ignition loss, phaeophytin pigment, and sulfide in the superficial bottom mud in the shellfish farms during summer in 1981 were determined to find an eutrophication level for the conservation of the farms. Both the Goseong Bay and the Jaran Bay, which are productive shellfish farms, are located along the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula. The Goseong Bay is 8m deep with a narrow mouth and approximately $17.5km^2$ in area, and the Jaran Bay 10m deep with $27.3km^2$. The bottoms are silty. Major shellfishes cultured are the oyster by the off-bottom method and the arkshell in the bottom. COD contents were $12.5{\sim}19.5\;mg/g$ dry mud, ignition loss $6.70{\sim}11.83\%$, phaeophytin pigment $6.8{\sim}11.0{\mu}g/g$ dry mud, and sulfide $0.18{\sim}0.64{\mu}g/g$ dry mud. There were no significant differences in the determined quantities between two bays. All quantities except the sulfide which is a little over than an eutrophication level, 0.3 mg/g dry mud, shows that the bottom muds are in an early stage of eutrophication. In addition, there was no particular increase in quantities of aforementioned four paramenters in comparision with those of 1976. It means that the eutrophication in the Goseong-Jaran Bay makes slow progress.

  • The ark shell, Scapharca broughtonii is a marine bivalve mollusks belonging to the family Arcidae and important seafood for Korean and Japanese, and southern coast is brisk bays for the ark shell aquaculture. However, productivity of ark shell from these regions were rapidly reduced during the last decade due to mass mortality. The reason of this great damage has not yet been identified. To overcome this economic loss, diverse investigations were focused on environmental factors that affects in the physiology of S. broughtonii, but microbiological researches were performed insufficiently. Hemoglobin is one of the major blood component of ark shell and is damaged by some species of bacterial toxins. We concentrated on this red pigment because hemolysis could be the cause of ark shell mortality. In this study, we analyzed microbial diversity of underwater sediments in coastal regions and also existences in the body of S. broughtonii. We investigate about 4,200 isolates collected from June to September for microbial diversity of sediments and ark shell. We screened all of culturable microorganisms, and identified 25 genera 118 species, 24 genera 89 species, 30 genera 109 species and 39 genera 141 species, and selected 140 unique colonies for identification and challenge assay.
