  • Clusters of galaxies are the largest virialized structures in the universe, which serve as laboratories for the study of astrophysical processes on very large scales. Observations and theoretical arguments suggest that intracluster media is turbulent. The media are very hot and dynamic, highly rarefied, and probably magnetized at some level. The physics involved is complex and high-resolution simulations help us understand the physics and consequent phenomena. We are engaged in a simulation study designed to understand in this context how subsonic turbulence with very weak initial magnetic fields develops and evolves with imposed forcing. We find that the resulting turbulence is sensitive to the nature of forcing as well as the dissipation properties of the media.

  • In this paper, using the energy estimates and the bootstrap arguments, the global existence of classical solutions for a prey-predator model with non-monotonic functional response and cross-diffusion where the prey and predator both have linear density restriction is proved when the space dimension n < 10.

  • In this paper we study the existence of multiple periodic solutions of second-order ordinary differential equations. New results of multiplicity of periodic solutions are obtained when the nonlinearity may cross multiple consecutive eigenvalues. The arguments are proceeded by a combination of variational and degree theoretic methods.

  • Multigrid method and acceleration by conjugate gradient method for first-order system least squares (FOSLS) using bilinear finite elements are developed for various boundary value problems of planar linear elasticity. They are two-stage algorithms that first solve for the displacement flux variable, then for the displacement itself. This paper focuses on solving for the displacement flux variable only. Numerical results show that the convergence is uniform even as the material becomes nearly incompressible. Computations for convergence factors and discretization errors are included. Heuristic arguments to improve the convergences are discussed as well.

  • A Markovian approach is introduced to find the Laplace transform of the forward recurrence time in the renewal process at finite time t > 0. Until now, most works on the forward recurrence time have been done through renewal arguments.

  • We explore the metallicity distribution of the Galactic halo based on the SDSS ugriz photometry. We use empirically calibrated sets of stellar isochrones to determine distances and metallicities of individual main-sequence stars in the halo. At heliocentric distances greater than 5 kpc, we find that the in situ photometric metallicity distribution reveals chemically divided dual halo components, which supports arguments from earlier studies based on the medium resolution spectroscopy. Our finding provides an unbiased estimate of relative fractions of each of these stellar components in the Galactic halo.

  • Looking beyond the assumptions and arguments of commercial liberalism, which sees economic interdependence and cooperation as fostering peace, this paper demonstrates that peace as an ideal can be found in various theories of international politics. The author finds the commercial liberal perspective to peace to be too narrow to explain the opportunities and challenges posed along the Silk Road and proposes to look at the peace narrative on the Silk Road through the lens of other approaches to peace, including the more interdisciplinary field of peace studies, for a more comprehensive picture.
