The object of this study was to evaluate how friction that occurs during the sliding movement of an orthodontic archwire through orthodontic brackets is differently affected by variant designs and ingredients of brackets and archwires and bracket-archwire angles. In order to simulate the situations which could occur during orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances, 4 types of brackets (Gemini, a stainless steel twin bracket, Mini Uni-Twiu. a stainless steel bracket with a single bracket design and narrow mesio-distal width; Clarity, a metal-reinforced ceramic bracket; Transcend, a ceramic bracket) and 3 types of orthodontic archwires $(0.016',\; 0.016{\times}0.022'\;stainless\;steel,\;0.016'\;Nitinol)$ were used and the bracket-archwire angles were controlled as $0^{\circ},\;3^{\circ}\;6^{\circ},\;and\;9^{\circ}$ Gemini significantly show and the lowest static and kinetic frictions (P<0.001) Clarity showed the highest static and kinetic frictions with a bracket-archwire angle of $0^{\circ}$. and Transcend at $6^{\circ}\;and\;9^{\circ}$ (P<0.001). An $0.016{\times}0.022'$ stainless steel rectangular archwire significantly showed the highest static and kinetic frictions (P<0.01). The lowest static and kinetic frictions were observed when the bracket-archwire angles were $0^{\circ}\;and\;3^{\circ}$ with 0.010' stainless steel round archwires (P<0.01), and $6^{\circ}\;and\;9^{\circ}$ with 0.016 Nitinol (P<0.001). The static and kinetic frictions were increased as the bracket-archwire angles were increased (P<0.001)
An unfavorable tipping movement can occur during the retraction of anterior teeth because orthodontic force is loaded by brackets positioned far from the center of resistance. To avoid this unfavorable movement, a compensating curved wire or lingual root torque wire is used. The purpose of this study is to investigate, using photoelastic material, the distribution of initial stress associated with the retraction of the incisors according to the degree of the compensating curve, to model changes associated with tooth ud alveolar bone structure. The following results were obtained by analysis of the polarizing plate of the effects of initial stress resulting from retraction of the anterior teeth: 1. When the incisors were retracted using combination archwire or sliding mechanics, the maximal polarizing pattern of the apical area decreased as the degree of the compensating owe increased from 0 to 15 to 30. 2. When the incisors were retracted by the combination archwire or sliding mechanics, the maximal polarizing pattern of the canine and premolar area increased as the degree of the compensating curve increased from 0to 15to 30. 3. A lower degree of polarizing patterns were associated with the combination archwire technique than the sliding mechanics technique at a given force. The above results indicate that there is no significant difference between the combination loop archwire technique and sliding mechanics, for the retraction of maxillary anterior teeth with decreased lingual tipping tendency by a compensating curve on the arch wire. However, the use of sliding mechanics is more effective for the prevention of lingual inclination of the anterior teeth, because the hook used in sliding mechanics is closer to the center of resistance of the maxillary anterior teeth.
Considering the high prevalence, transverse control in adult patients presenting relatively narrow maxillary width is a challenging issue. This study compared the pattern of arch expansion induced by either miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expander (MARPE) or continuous archwire engaged on self-ligating brackets. Age-matched adults groups(N=15 each) were treated with respective appliance. In both groups, all intercanine, interpremolar, and intermolar widths increased, and significantly greater change was noted in the intermolar region. Buccal tipping was minimal in both groups. Subsequent arch length increase, lingual tipping of incisors and distal tipping of molars were also found in both groups. According to the results, it can be concluded that the MARPE induced generally more arch expansion, particularly in the intermolar width, indicating that the adults showing buccal crossbite of the molars may have to undergo expansion via MARPE prior to arch alignment using continuous archwire.
Determination of force system and prediction of side effects from unbent straight wire engaged in edgewise bracket is clinically very difficult because it is statically indeterminate system. This study is to develop a linear beam theory that explains the force system for straight wire engaged in edgewise bracket regardless of geometry(a/b), material, cross section of wire, and interbracket distance. 1. Formula for force system of bilateral fixed end beam was derived. 2. It is possible to calculate force system of each tooth engaged in continuous straight wire. 3. The possibility and location of permanent deformation can be predicted.
Practitioners are aware of the presence of friction between bracket system and archwire during sliding movement of teeth. Clinically a mesiodistally applied force must exceed the frictional force to produce a tooth movement. The objective of this study were to determine, on a dry condition, changes in magnitude of friction with respect to load, 3rd order inclination (Torque), archwire materials and ligature type. Three wire alloys (Stainless Steel, TMA, NiTi) in two wire sizes (.016, .016x, .022 inch) were examined respect to two bracket system (Straight, Standard), and two ligature type (Metal, Plastic ligature) at three levels of load (100g, 150g, 200g). The results were as follows; 1. Frictional resistance was found to increase with increasing load for S.S., TMA, NiTi. 2. The straight bracket system was exhibited more frictional force than standard bracket system for .016x, .022 S.S. tightly ligated metal ligature. But, torque difference did not increase friction for loose metal ligature & plastic ligature. 3. Regardless of the ligature type, torque and load, stainless steel wire sliding against stainless steel exhibited the lowest friction, and TMA sliding against stainless steel exhibited the highest friction. 4. The loose stainless steel ligature generated lower frictional resistance than plastic ligature in all experimental groups. 5. The following factors affected friction in decreasing order; wire material ligature type, and load.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference in frictional resistance among metal, ceramic, self-ligation brackets and coated or non-coated Ni-Ti archwires at various bracket-archwire angulations during the sliding movement of an orthodontic archwire, using an orthodontic sliding simulation device. Methods: Four types of bracket (Micro-arch Perpect Clear2 Clippy-C and Damon3 and 5 types of orthodontic archwire (0.014", 0.016", and 0.016" ${\times}$ 0.022" inch coated Ni-Ti, and 0.016" and 0.016" ${\times}$ 0.022" inch Ni-Ti) were used. Further, the bracket- archwire angles were set at 4 different angulations: $0^{\circ}$, $3^{\circ}$, $6^{\circ}$, and $9^{\circ}$. Results: The frictions from all the experimental groups were found to be significantly increased in order of self-ligation brackets, Micro-arch and Perpect Clear2 ($p$ < 0.001). The presence of a coat had no effect on the friction of the same sized archwires at $0^{\circ}$ and $3^{\circ}$ bracket-archwire angles ($p$ < 0.001). Coated archwires had significantly higher frictions than the same sized non-coated archwires at $6^{\circ}$ and $9^{\circ}$ bracket-archwire angles ($p$ < 0.001). The frictions increased significantly as the bracket-archwire angles were increased ($p$ < 0.001). Conclusions: The use of self-ligation brackets will be beneficial in clinical situations where a low frictional force is required. Further, in cases where crowding is not severe, the use of coated archwires should not cause problems. However, more additional explanation is required considering the fact that the damage of coated archwire and exposure of the metal portion in case of binding and notching and the effects of saliva were not taken into account.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the change of before and after treatment of anterior openbite malocclusions treated by Multiloop Edgewise Archwire technique. The openbite sample consisted of 4 male and 12 female adults, treated with nonextraction or third molar extraction. The normal sample consisted of 58 subjects, which have pleasing facial profile and normal occlusion and no experience of orthodontic or prosthodontic treatment. The 58 subjects of normal sample were subdivided by cephalemetric vertical relationship of face. The 40 subjects, cephalometric vertical relationship of face was in normal range, classified as Normal Sample group 1. The 18 subjects, increased cephalometric vertical relationship of face, classified as Normal Sample group 2. The computerized cephalometric analysis was accomplished with 50 reference points for 22 skeletal measurements, 46 dentoalveolar measurements, 8 soft tissue measurements. Statistical analysis of the data was carried out with paired t-test, Student's t-test, and DUNCAN test using SAS(PC version), The results were as follows : 1. There were no statistically significant differences in skeletal measurement between before and after treatment. The major changes were in dentoalveolar region. 2. After treatment, the long axis of maxillary and mandibular posterior teeth were distally tipped-back, and uprighted to bisected occlusal plane. The interincisal angle was increased. 3. There were no statistically significant increase in the upper posterior dental height and statistically significant decrease in the lower posterior dental height. The upper anterior dental height was increased, but there was no statistically significant increase in the absolute upper anterior dental hight. The lower anterior dental height was increased. 4. After treatment, the maxillary occlusal plane to palatal plane angle and the mandibular occlusal plane to mandibular plane angle were statistically significant increased. Then, there were no statistically significant difference between after treatment group and normal sample group 2. 5. After treatment, the percentage of upper lip length to upper anterior dental height was decreased. Then, There were no statistically significant difference between after treatment group and normal sample group 2.
Objective: We compared the skeletal and dental changes that resulted from the use of two methods of intermaxillary fixation (IMF)-miniscrews and surgical archwire-in 74 adult patients who had Class III malocclusion and were treated with the same orthognathic surgical procedure at a hospital in Korea. Methods: All the patients underwent Le Fort I osteotomy and bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy with rigid fixation. They were divided into two groups according to the type of IMF used-group 1 underwent surgical archwire fixation and group 2 underwent orthodontic miniscrew fixation. In a series of cephalograms for each patient, we compared vertical and horizontal tooth-position measurements: (a) immediately after surgery ($T_0$), (b) 3 months after surgery ($T_1$), and (c) 6 months after surgery ($T_2$). Cephalometric changes within each group were examined using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) while the independent samples t -test procedure was used to compare the two groups. Results: After surgery, the maxillary incisors tended to be proclined in both groups although there were no significant differences. Incisor overbite increased significantly in both groups from $T_0$ to $T_1$, and the miniscrew group (group 2) showed slightly greater overbite than the archwire group (group 1). Conclusions: This study suggest that the use of orthodontic miniscrews and orthodontic surgical archwire for IMF in adult patients results in similar skeletal and dental changes.
This study was designed to investigate the reciprocal movement which was derived form application of active torque in ideal archwire by computer-aided three-dimensional finite element analysis of maxillary teeth and surrounding periodontal ligament composed of 2617 elements and 3725 nodes. Ideal archwire model was also made using the beam elements and the contact between the wire and the bracket slot was made using the gap element. In this study non-linear elastic behaviors of contact between the wire and the bracket slot were considered on. We put the active torque between the lateral and cenral incisor and between the second premolar and the first molar with/without cinch-back. The results were expressed by quantitative and visible ways. The findings of this study were as follows: 1. Reciprocal actions to active torque were complex system consisting of a combination of counter-torque, bucco-lingual linear displacement and tipping, rotation of the teeth, occluso-gingival linear displacement. 2. When active anterior crown labial torque was applied, crown labial tippings of the lateral were the greatest, and those of the central incisor was the next, Crown lingual tippings of the canine and the first premolar, mesial rotations and extrusion of the lateral and distal rotations and intrusion of the canine occurred. When anterior torque with the cinch-back was applied, amount of crown labial tippings of the lateral and central incisor were reduced. Amount of crown lingual tipping of the canine and the first premolar were increased. Mesial tippings and mesial rotations of the second molar occurred. 3. When active posterior crown lingual torque was applied, crown lingual tippings of the first moalr were the greatest, and crown labial tippings of the second premolar and the first premolar were the next, the crown lingual tipping of the second molar were a little. Mesial rotations of the second premolar occurred but those of the first premolar didn't occurred.
