  • Solvent extraction experiments were carried out to recover and separate Ru(III) from aqueous hydrochloric acid media using TBP and Cyanex923. The efficiency of the extraction was studied under various experimental conditions, such as concentration of HCl and NaCl, concentration of extractant in the organic phase and temperature. The extraction behavior of metal impurities, such as Pt, Bi, Sn, Fe, Pb and Cu in mixed solutions was examined. From the experimental studies, it was found that the Cyanex923 resulted in higher extraction percentage of Ru than TBP. However TBP was more effective for the separation of Ru and Pt, Bi, Sn in mixed solutions than Cyanex923.

  • Metallic alloy fuels from fast reactors will be reprocessed by a non-aqueous electrochemical technique known as electrorefining. Electrorefining of spent metal fuel results in the accumulation of heat generating fission products especially 137Cs in the electrolyte, which is a eutectic salt mixture of 44 wt% LiCl and 56 wt% KCl. The fission products need to be removed from the salt so as to reduce the decay heat load and contamination thereby facilitating reuse of the salt and minimizing waste generation. Melt crystallization technique is a simple separation process being pursued for separation of fission products. This is a single step process which utilizes the difference in solubility of fission products in the solid and liquid phase. Crystallization involves purification of a substance from a liquid mixture by solidification of the desired component. Numerical modeling of separation of CsCl from a LiCl-KCl eutectic mixture by solidification was carried out using ANSYS Fluent (19.2). The enrichment of CsCl during solidification, its distribution in molten salt and segregation time were evaluated. Further, solidification experiments were conducted using the molten salt mixture and the predicted numerical results were validated.

  • In boiling aqueous solution, D-amygdalin usually begins to convert into neoamygdalin in 3 min and more than 30% of the initial D-amygdalin is found as neoamygdalin after 30 min. In this report, we establish methods for simple HPLC analysis and the inhibition of D-amygdalin conversion. D-Amygdalin and its conversion product, neoamygdalin, were clearly separated on reverse-phase column chromatography by an optimized eluent of 10mM sodium phosphate buffer (pH 3.8) containing 6% acetonitrile. • A solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for the extraction and analysis of methyl-tert-butyl ether has been described. methyl-tert-butyl ether was extracted from aqueous solution using SPME fiber coated polydimethylsiloxane and analysed by GC-MS with capillary column. Extraction parameters and chromatographic separation conditions were optimized. The applied method represented good analytical performance in terms of precision (3-8%, RSD) and accuracy(93-102%, mean recovery) with a method detection limit of 0.03 ppb.

  • Novel amphiphilic, thermo-responsive polyaspartamides which showed both LCST (lower critical solution temperature), and sol-gel transition were prepared and characterized. The polyaspartamide derivatives were synthesized from polysuccinimide, the polycondensate of aspartic acid monomer, via successive nucleophilic ring-opening reaction by using dodecylamine and N-isopropylethylenediamine (NIPEDA). At the intermediate composition ranges, the dilute aqueous solution exhibited a thermally responsive phase separation due to the presence of LCST. The phase transition temperature was controllable by changing the content of pendent groups. In addition, a physical gelation, i.e. the sol-gel transition was observed from the concentrated solutions, which was elucidated by dynamic viscoelastic measurements. These novel injectable and thermo-responsive hydrogels have potential for various biomedical applications such as tissue engineering and current drug delivery system.

  • The separation of gallium and indium from the matrix elements such as zinc and other ions, especially form Fe(III) ion was studied for the determination of trace level of them in zinc ores and zinc blendes by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry(ICP-AES). Gallium and indium were extracted from the sample solution with a solvent of tributyl phosphate(TBP). The type and concentration of acid, interferences of other ions, the ratio of aqueous phase to organic phase, TBP concentration, sripping efficiency were optimized for the effective extraction. Gallium and indium were separated from other ions in the 5N hydrochloric acid solution of the samples by the extraction with 100% TBP. In this time, Fe(III) was reduced to Fe(II) with hydroxylamine hydrochloride to prevent its coextraction prior to the main extraxtion. After stripped from organic phase by the back-extraction with 0.02N HCl, they were determined in the aqueous phase by ICP-AES. This method was known to be quantitative from the overall extraction of more than 95%.

  • The changes in the partition coefficient of model proteins (lysozyme, myoglobin, conalbumin, bovine serum albumin) in an aqueous two-phase system formed by polyethylene glycol and dextran were examined in order to improve the capacity of counter current distribution for the protein fractionation and concentration. The protein distribution patterns in CCD with 30 tubes varied with the pH of the system, and both theoretical and measured values agreed well. From the mixture of model protein, pure BSA fraction was appeared at the upper-phase of 14th tube having pH 4.5, pure myoglobin at the lower-phase of the 16th be with pH 6.5 and conalbumin at the lower-phase of 4th tube with pH 12. The result indicated the possible use of CCD method for protein fractionation, if the partition coefficient of proteins was manipulated by pH and other means.

  • A simple and sensitive high-performance liquid chromatographic method was developed for the simultaneous identification of enrofloxacin and its active metabolite ciprofloxacin in chicken muscle. Norflorxacin imprinted polymers synthesized in water-containing systems show high selectivity to enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin in an aqueous environment. Using these water-compatible imprinted polymers as selective adsorbents in the solid-phase extraction of enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin from chicken samples, the remaining biological matrix could be quickly washed out from the imprinted column while enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin were selectively retained and enriched. Analytical separation was performed on a $C_{18}$ column using acetonitrile-water as a mobile phase and fluorescence detection. Good linearity was obtained from 0.8 to 500 ng/g (r > 0.998) with relative standard deviation of less than 3.9%. The mean recoveries of enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin from chicken muscle were 80.6-94.5% and 77.8-91.8% at three different concentrations. The limits of determinations based on S/N=3 were 0.07 ng/g and 0.09 ng/g, which are below the maximum residue limits established in many countries.

  • Arsenic (As) is one of the elements having most harmful impact on the human health. Arsenic is a known carcinogen and arsenic contamination of drinking water is affecting on humans in many regions of the world. Adsorption has been proved most preferable technique for the removal of arsenic. Many researchers have studied various types of solid materials as arsenic adsorbent, and iron oxide and its modified forms are considered as the most effective adsorbent in terms of adsorption capacity, recovery, and economics. However, most of all iron oxides have small surface area in comparing with common adsorbents in environmental application such as activated carbon but the activated carbon has weak sorption affinity for arsenic. We have used an activated carbon as base adsorbent and iron oxide coating on the activated carbon as high affinity sorption sites and giving magnetic attraction ability. In this study, adsorption properties of arsenic and magnetic separation efficiency of the magnetized activated carbon (MAC) were evaluated with variable iron oxide content. As the iron oxide content of the MAC increased, adsorption capacity has also gradually increased up to a point where clogging by iron oxide in the pore of activated carbon compensate the increased sorption capacity. The increase of iron oxide content of the MAC also affected magnetic properties, which resulted in greater magnetic separation efficiency. Current results show that magnetically modified common adsorbent can be an efficiency improved adsorbent and a feasible environmental process if it is combined with the magnetic separation.
