  • The purpose of this paper is to estimate a probability to visit the Yeosu Aquarium with an ordered logit model. Ordered logit model is affordable to estimate the probability when the dependant variable represents likert-type scale. The estimated results are as follows. The more income induces the visiting-expectation. The experience for another aquarium and the visiting-expectation for the Yeosu EXPO are contributed to the visiting-expectation for the Yeosu Aquarium. The needs to visit the Yeosu Aquarium is low in Kyoungsang area and Seoul-Kyounggi-Incheun Metropolitan area. This is related to the Aquarium facilities, which were established in each area. In average level conditions regarding to all independent variables the probability to visit the Yeosu Aquarium is calculated to 15.75%. However, the probability to visit to the Yeosu Aquarium is decreasing according to the change of an admission fee.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the impact of aquariums on indoor air quality for improving humidity and reducing indoor air pollutants. Methods: An air-conditioning chamber was used to determine humidity increase by aquarium volume at three different temperatures ($20^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$). Humidity increase was measured for 21 hours ($20^{\circ}C$) and 12 hours ($25^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$) while placing five different volume of aquarium in the chamber. Concentrations of several volatile organic compounds and formaldehyde were measured after a known amount was injected into the chamber with and without an aquarium. Results: The humidity inside the chamber increased when the aquarium was inside the chamber. Humidity change was similar at $20^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, and $30^{\circ}C$, but slightly higher at higher temperatures. The bigger the aquarium volume, the higher was the humidity increase that occurred. Humidity increase by the aquarium was sufficient to increase indoor humidity in winter and negligible in summer. Concentrations of some water-soluble indoor air pollutants and formaldehyde were decreased with the aquarium inside the chamber. Conclusions: An aquarium could increase indoor humidity in winter, while the humidity increase is negligible in summer. An aquarium could decrease some water-soluble indoor air pollutants, including formaldehyde. This result implies that an aquarium may have positive effects on indoor environmental quality.

  • This paper presents the design and implementation of virtual aquarium by generating 3D models of fishes that are colored by viewers in an aim to create interaction among viewers and aquarium. The virtual aquarium system is composed of multiple texture extraction modules, a single interface module and a single display module. The texture extraction module recognize the QR code on the canvas to get information of the predefined mapping table and then extract the texture data for the corresponding 3D model. The scanned image is segmented and warp transformed onto the texture image by using the mapping information. The extracted texture is transferred to the interface module to save on the server computer and the interface module sends the fish code and texture information to the display module. The display module generates a fish on the virtual aquarium by using predefined 3D model with the transmitted texture. The fishes on the virtual aquarium have three different swimming methods: self-swimming, autonomous swimming, and leader-following swimming. The three different swimming methods are discussed in this paper. The future study will be the implementation of virtual aquarium based on storytelling to further increase interactions with the viewer.

  • Removal of waste generated by Paralichthys olivaceus in the seawater aquarium using a foam separator was investigated. Protein concentration without a foam separator continuously increased until 3 days after stocking and reached at 25 mg/L after 5 days stocking, but protein concentration became lower than the initial protein concentration (2.5 mg/L) with a foam separator. The trends of other fish wastes such as ammonia, total suspended solids (TSS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were similar to protein. Dissolved oxygen (DO) in the aquarium decreased below 6.0 mg/L without a foam separator, but with a foam separator the average DO in the aquarium was 7.3 mg/L. Foam separation with the increase of superficial air velocity (SAV) was more effective than that with the fixed SAV. This study showed that wastewater. treatment of seawater aquarium using a foam separator is effective method for a fish waste removal and oxygen supply.

  • To supply fresh and quality quarantined seafood in live seafood specialty restaurants, facilities for short-term culture or holding of live marine fish and shellfish are a necessity. In this study, the performance of a simple recirculating aquarium system for the culture and holding of marine fish was evaluated. The aquarium system consisted of a culture tank, a foam fractionator for solids removal, and a Styrofoam bead filter for nitrification and solids trapping. In the first trial, the aquarium was stocked with a total of 12 kg Korean rockfish, which were fed approximately $0.5\%$ of the total fish body weight daily. During the 2-month culture period, total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) and nitrite nitrogen $(NO_2-N)$ concentrations remained below 1mg/L and 2mg/L, respectively. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) fluctuated between 13.6 and 31.2 mg/L on selected sampling days. The total suspended solids (TSS) removed by the foam fractionator was between 2.7 and 4.6g daily. The Styrofoam bead filter not only reduced TAN and $NO_2-N$ in the culture tank water, but also trapped solids equivalent to 8.3-26.7\% of the weight of feed supplied. In Trial 2, 30kg of live fish were held in the aquarium without feeding for a 24-hour period and the water quality parameters were monitored. TAN and $NO_2-N$ concentrations first increased and then decreased to around 0.3mg/L. These results demonstrate that the recirculating aquarium system is a functional option for the short-term culture or holding of marine fish.

  • In this paper, we propose digital exhibition contents for the aquarium, especially 'Gyeongpo Lagoon Ecological Museum'. We try to plan appropriate media contents that can be mixed with the aquarium storytelling. The aquarium must have special spaces that are not related with an exhibition directly but are necessary for survival of fishes such as a water circulation room. We design the special spaces using media contents and let visitors feel that the whole aquarium is in the ocean. First of all, we investigate the aquarium currently under construction. And then, we propose the appreciate media platforms and plan individual content. We suggest 3 types of media platforms, 3D water projection, interactive games utilizing Kinect, and a fog screen. Moreover, we produce 2D drawing concepts, 3D modeling images, and virtual exhibitions in virtual reality for the representation of the location in which those platforms are installed and the media contents we plan. The pre-visualization is helpful for the media platform construction and is used as a rough sketch to producing an animation shown in the exhibition.
