  • To restore old aqueduct in Korea which is a irrigation bridge to supply water in paddy field area, it is needed to estimate approximate costs of restoration because the basic design for estimation of construction costs is often ruled out in current system. In this paper, estimating models of construction costs were developed on the basis of performance data for restoration of RC aqueduct bridges since 2003. The regression analysis (RA) model and case-based reasoning (CBR) model for the estimation of construction costs were developed respectively. Error rate of simple RA model was lower than that of multiple RA model. CBR model using genetic algorithm (GA) has been applied in the estimation of construction costs. In the model three factors like attribute weight, attribute deviation and rank of case similarity were optimized. Especially, error rate of estimated construction costs decreased since limit ranges of the attribute weights were applied. The results showed that error rates between RA model and CBR models were inconsiderable statistically. It is expected that the proposed estimating method of approximate costs of aqueduct restoration will be utilized to support quick decision making in phased rehabilitation project.

  • We develop semiparametric methods for matched case-control studies using regression splines. Three methods are developed: an approximate crossvalidation scheme to estimate the smoothing parameter inherent in regression splines, as well as Monte Carlo Expectation Maximization (MCEM) and Bayesian methods to fit the regression spline model. We compare the approximate cross-validation approach, MCEM and Bayesian approaches using simulation, showing that they appear approximately equally efficient, with the approximate cross-validation method being computationally the most convenient. An example from equine epidemiology that motivated the work is used to demonstrate our approaches.

  • In this paper, we consider statistical inferences on the estimation of the parameters of a Weibull distribution when data are randomly censored. Maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) and approximate MLEs are derived to estimate the parameters. We consider two cases for the censoring model: the assumption that the censoring distribution does not involve any parameters of interest and a censoring distribution that follows a Weibull distribution. A simulation study is conducted to compare the performances of the estimators. The result shows that the MLEs and the approximate MLEs are similar in terms of biases and mean square errors; in addition, the assumption of the censoring model has a strong influence on the estimation of scale parameter.

  • In order to estimate strength of concrete, many attempts have been made. However, it is difficult to estimate concrete strength with ages. In this study, the factors influencing the strength of concrete such as w/c ratio and curing temperature, were investigated and results predicted by the established strength models were compared to measured strength data. It is found that in general the estimated values are approximate to the test results. In order to accurately predict the concrete strength curing temperature factor should be employed in the strength models.

  • This paper deals with the bias and variance of regression coefficient estimators in a finite population. We derive approximate formulas for the bias, variance and mean square error of two estimators when we select a fixed-size inclusion probability proportional to the size sample and then estimate regression coefficients by the ordinary least square estimator as well as the weighted least square estimator based on the selected sample data. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the comparison of the two estimators in terms of variance and mean square error are suggested. In addition, a simple example is introduced to numerically compare the variance and mean square error of the two estimators.

  • General underwater target detection methods adopt short-time FFT for estimate target doppler. This paper proposes the efficient target detection method, instead of conventional FFT, using approximate FFT for distributed sensor network target detection, which requires lighter computations. In the proposed method, we decrease computational rate of FFT by the quantization of received signal. For validation of the proposed method, experiment result which is applied to FFT based active sonar detector and real oceanic data is presented.

  • This thesis studies the estimation from interarrival and service time data of the mean number of customers in service at time t for an $M/G/{\infty}$ queue. The assumption is that the parametric form of the service time distribution is unknown and the empirical distribution of twe service time is used in the estimate the mean number of customers in service. In the case in which the customer arrival rate is known the distribution of the estimate is derived and an approximate normal confidence interval procedure is suggested. The use of the nonparametric methods, which are the jackknife and the bootstrap, to estimate variability and construct confidence intervals for the estimate is also studied both analytically and by simulation.
