  • The purpose of this study was to describe the application of 3D finite element analysis to determine resultant stresses on the bone anchored fixed prosthesis, implants and supporting bone of the mandible according to fixture numbers and load conditions. 4 or 6 fixtures and the bone anchored fixed prosthesis were placed in 3D finite element mandibular arch model which represents an actual mandibular skull. A $45^{\circ}$ diagonal load of 10㎏ was labiolingually applied in the center of the prosthesis(P1). A $45^{\circ}$ diagonal load of 20㎏ was buccolingually applied at the location of the 10mm or 20mm cantilever posterior to the most distal implant(P2 or P3). The vertical distribution loads were applied to the superior surfaces of both the right and the left 20mm cantilevers(P4). In order that the boundary conditions of the structure were located to the mandibular ramus and angle, the distal bone plane was to totally fixed to prevent rigid body motion of the entire model. 3D finite element analysis was perfomed for stress distribution and deflection on implants and supporting bone using commercial software(ABAQUS program. for Sun-SPARC Workstation. The results were as follows : 1. In all conditions of load, the hightest tensile stresses were observed at the metal lates of prostheses. 2. The higher tensile stresses were observed at the diagonal loads rather than the vertical loads 3. 6-implants cases were more stable than 4-implants cases for decreasing bending and torque under diagonal load on the anterior of prosthesis. 4. From a biomechanical perspective, high stress developed at the metal plate of cantilever-to-the most distal implant junctions as a consequence of loads applied to the cantilever extension. 5. Under diagonal load on cantilever extension, the 6-implants cases had a tendency to reduce displacement and to increase the reaction force of supporting point due to increasing the bendign stiffness of the prosthesis than 4-implants cases. 6. Under diagonal load on cantilever extension, the case of 10mm long cantilever was more stable than that of 20mm long cnatilever in respect of stress distribution and displacement. 7. When the ends of 10mm or 20mm long cantilever were loaded, the higher tensile stress was observed at the second most distal implant rather than the first most distal implant. 8. The 6-implants cases were more favorable about prevention of screw loosening under repeated loadings because 6-implants cases had smaller deformation and 4-implants cases had larger deformation.

  • wet spun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber precursors. The process variables chosen were treatment temperature, applied tension in stabilization process. The temperature profile of the stabilization was set on the basis of exothermic peaks of the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) result. Both tensile strength and modulus increased with holding at onset temperatures of the exothermic peaks for extended duration, and with a higher heating rate up to the onset temperatures at a given applied tension among the experimental conditions. The increase in load monotonously increased the tensile modulus, on the other hand, the tensile strength was maximum at the load of 15 mg/filament (T15). The load 20 mg/ filament (T20) was considered to be exceeded to form oriented crystalline structure, possibly introducing more defects in the fiber than under load of T15. The sample CP3-T15 O5 H30 showed the best tensile properties among the samples experimented whose tensile properties are compatible with the commercialized grade of general purpose carbon fibers even at low carbonization temperature such as $800\;{^{\circ}C}$ (the carbonization temperature in the commercial process. 1300∼$1500\;{^{\circ}C}$).

  • Comprehensive results from cyclic plate loading at a diameter of 300 mm supported by layers of geocell are presented. The plate load tests were performed in a test pit measuring $2000{\times}2000mm$ in plane and 700 mm in depth. To simulate half and full traffic loadings, fifteen loading and unloading cycles were applied to the loading plate with amplitudes of 400 and 800 kPa. The optimum embedded depth of the first layer of geocell beneath the loading plate and the optimum vertical spacing of geocell layers, based on plate settlement, are both approximately 0.2 times loading plate diameter. The results show that installation of the geocell layers in the foundation bed, increase the resilient behavior in addition to reduction of accumulated plastic and total settlement of pavement system. Efficiency of geocell reinforcement was decreased by increasing the number of the geocell layers for all applied stress levels and number of cycles of applied loading. The results of the testing reveal the ability of the multiple layers of geocell reinforcement to 'shakedown' to a fully resilient behavior after a period of plastic settlement except when there is little or no reinforcement and the applied cyclic pressure are large. When shakedown response is observed, then both the accumulated plastic settlement prior to a steady-state response being obtained and the resilient settlements thereafter are reduced. The use of four layers of geocell respectively decreases the total and residual plastic settlements about 53% and 63% and increases the resilient settlement 145% compared with the unreinforced case. The inclusion of the geocell layers also reduces the vertical stress transferred down through the pavement by distributing the load over a wider area. For example, at the end of the load cycle of the applied pressure of 800 kPa, the transferred pressure at the depth of 510 mm is reduced about 21.4%, 43.9%, 56.1% for the reinforced bases with one, two, and three layers of geocell, respectively, compared to the stress in the unreinforced bed.

  • This study was performed to compare the stress distribution pattern in the crestal cortical bone and cancellous bone using 3-dimensional finite element stress analysis when 2 different Young's modulus(high modulus, model 1; low modulus, model 2) of cancellous bone was assumed. For the analysis, a finite element model was designed to have two square-threaded implants fused together and located at first and second molar area. Stress distribution was observed when vertical load of 200N was applied at several points on the occlusal surfaces of the implants, including central fossa, points 1.5mm, 2mm, 3mm and 3.5mm buccally away from central fossa. The results were as follows; 1. In both model, the maximum Von-Mises stress in the crestal cortical bone was greater when the load was applied at the central point, points 1.5mm and 2mm buccally away from central fossa than other cases. 2. In the cortical bone around first and second molar, model 2 showed greater Von-Mises stress than model 1. It is concluded that when the occlusal contact is afforded, the distribution of stress varies depending on the density of cancellous bone and the location of loading. More favorable stress distribution is expected when the contact load is applied within the diameter of fixtures.

  • This paper is concerned with the surface hardness measurement of NiP-coated AA7050 using different loads from 10 to 100 g. The surface hardness was observed to increase from 180 to 600 Hv with increasing NiP layer thickness, depending on the load applied for indentation. When NiP coating thickness is thinner than 2 ㎛, the surface hardness of NiP-coated AA7050 was mainly determined by AA7050 substrate, while it was significantly increased by NiP coating layer when NiP coating thickness is thicker than 2 ㎛. Hardness of AA7050 substrate itself was not dependent on the applied load but the hardness of NiP-coated AA7050 was largely influenced by the load applied for indentation. The largest difference of hardness between 10 g and 100g of applied loads, was obtained at the NiP thickness of about 8 ㎛ above which the measured hardness at 10 g reached a maximum value of about 600 Hv. It was also observed that indentation-induced plastic deformation next to the indented zone occurs when NiP layer is 5.64 times thicker than the depth of impression formed by indentation.

  • The artificial joint is consisted with the upper structure of tungsten alloy steel and the lower part of polyethelene are applied with load. When this joint is applied with load in this study, the load distribution at the joint and the stress distribution of support hole to install the joint are investigated by finite element analysis. These results can be utilized at obtaining the basic material to have the experiment for the real thing. The crack is initiated as the load is concentrated at the end of corner on the upper structure. This behavior is in accord with a case of tissue damage due to the breakage of artificial joint reported at medical science.

  • Since the 20th century, the business of railway was invaded by the invention of airplanes and vehicles in the field of the transportation of passenger and commercial products, however, in the 21st century, the fervent development of a high speed railway made possible the huge capacity of transporting passengers and commercial freight, so the railway industry is facing a new era of railway revolution. The 200 years old railway tradition includes the history of railway bridges built in areas of river, valley and metropolitan region and in that, the number of constructions of railway bridges that is composed of cable-stayed bridges is increasing as one of the most optimal bridges considering the quality of materials and the span of continuous-welded long rail. Thanks to the minimized effects of the fixed load on the stiffening girder section by delivering the fixed load which is applied to the pylon with the composition of elastic supporting points by using cables and the effective structural system that can throughly resist extra loads in addition to fixed load, the long-extended span of a bridge becomes possible. In this structural system, the load that is applied to the stiffening girder section forms a now pattern and in the process of these load delivery, there will be a necessity to examine the concentration of stress occurred in the cable-anchor system of the cable.

  • In this study, the mechanical joint performance of the V-Insert clamp applied to automobile exhaust pipes was evaluated through the experimental investigation of its axial load capacity. The axial load of the V-Insert clamp was also determined by using theoretical equations presented by Shoghi and compared with the experimental results. As results of the theoretical prediction, the axial load of the V-Insert clamp tended to increase along with smaller angle of the V-Insert segment and the lower friction coefficient between the V-Insert segment and exhaust pipes. The experimental results under tightening effects were similar to the theoretical results and the axial load of the V-Insert clamp presented maximum values in the range of all torques at distance of 2mm between each exhaust pipes. The experimental results under loading effects were similar to the theoretical results in the range of lower torques but deviated from the theoretical results in the range of higher torques. These results would be beneficial to improve the joint and sealing performance of the V-Insert clamp.

  • This paprer presents the evlauation method for transmission marginal loss factors(MLFs) considering the electrical distance. Generally, MLFs are represented as the sensitivity of transmission losses, which is computed from the change of generation by the change of the load. MLFs are classified as load-focused MLFs and generator-focused MLFs. The existing evaluation method for generator focused MLFs has the limit not reflecting the characteristic of power systems since the method has been introduced the assumption which the output of a generator is supplied to all of the load buses on the power system. Therefore, to overcome the limit of evaluation method for generator-focused MLFs, we have applied the process, which it approximately can find the load buses that supplied a generator to the method. We have applied the proposed method to the simple 5-bus system because the proposed method is not analytic but the hybrid method incorporated the Kirschen and Bialek's algorithm to the existing analytic method to find the load buses supplied by a generator.
