  • In order to investigate the shear characteristics of earth structure after construction. Four sample soils with different gradation were selected and compacted under the optimum moisture content and the maximum dry density. And the direct shear test and the triaxial compression test were performed with those sample soils under various pre-compression loads. The results were summarized as follows; 1. With the increase of the percent passing of No. 200 sieve, the cohesion of soil increased regularly and the internal friction angle of soil decreased with slow ratio. 2. The pre-compression increased the shear strength of compacted cohesive soil. The increase of cohesion was very apparent but the internal friction angle didn't show such regular tendency. 3. With the increase of pre-compression load, the slope of stress-strain curve showed steep at the early stage of horizontal strain. The vertical strain was small at the compression stage and big at the expansion stage. 4. When the vertical stress of shear test with increase in the horizontal strain was small, stress ratio(shear stress vs. vertical stress) of sample showed the largest value and the slope of stress ratio curve showed also steep. 5. When the sample was had the same condition, the cohesion of soil showed bigger value in the triaxial compression test and the internal friction angle of soil showed bigger value in the direct shear test.

  • In this study, modified triaxial compression tests were carried out to investigate the characteristics of shear strength of unsaturated dredged soils. The variation of shear strength generally depends on more matric suction than drained conditions, and then is gradually converged in matric suction 100kPa. It indicates that the effective angle of internal friction and effective cohesion in unsaturated conditions increase due to degree of saturation, namely, matric suction than those of saturated conditions. Therefore, it shows that apparent friction angle, ${\phi}^b$ due to the variation of matric suction to evaluate reasonable shear strength parameters in unsaturated soils should be considered.

  • Barcelona Basic Model (BBM) can describe not only swelling owing to decrease in effective stress, but also wetting-induced swelling due to decrease in suction. And the BBM can also consider increase in cohesion and apparent preconsolidation stress with suction, and decrease in the apparent preconsolidation stress with temperature. Therefore, the BBM is widely used all over the world to predict and to analyze coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of bentonite which is considered as buffer materials at the engineered barrier system in the high-level radioactive waste disposal system. However, the BBM is not well known in Korea, so this paper introduce the BBM to Korean rock engineers and geotechnical engineers. In this study, Modified Cam Clay (MCC) model is introduced before all, because the BBM was first developed as an extension of the MCC model to unsaturated soil conditions. Then, the thermo-elasto-plastic version of the BBM is described in detail.

  • In order to evaluate the effect of matric suction on the strength and deformation characteristics, the unsaturated unconfined compression test is performed for the statical1y compacted silty sand. Specimens used were made under conditions with various initial degrees of saturation. The initial matric suction, matric suction at the peak shear strength and the volumetric deformation during the shear process were measured. From these results, it was found that the initial degree of saturation exerts the influence on the behaviors of suction, peak shear strength and the volumetric deformation. Furthermore, the suction stress($P_s$) which means the apparent cohesion due to matric suction in the unsaturated shear strength could be derived.

  • Multi-layered geotextile tubes may have problems on its stability when used as cofferdam. This study presents the shear strength characteristics at the interface between geotextiles and a cementitious binder material to improve the stability of the multi-layered geotextile tubes. In this study, two different types of geotextiles are used. After mixing with a rapid setting cement, fly ash, sand, accelerator, and water, the cementitious binder material is prepared at the interface between two geotextile samples and cured under water for a desired period. The specimen is placed on upper and lower direct shear boxes by using clamping systems. A series of direct shear tests for two different geotextiles are performed along the curing time under three vertical stresses. Experimental results show that the shear strength at the interface between the cementitious binder material and geotextiles is greater than that at the interface between two geotextiles. For two types of geotextiles, apparent cohesion occurs at the interface between the cementitious binder material and geotextiles. In addition, the friction angles for any curing time are improved, compared to the interface between two geotextiles. The cementitious binder material suggested for the interface between two geotextiles may be useful for the reinforcement of multi-layered geotextile tubes.

  • One of the most important parameters affecting nonlinearsoil-structure interaction, especially rocking foundation, is the vertical factor of safety (F.Sv). In this research, the effect of F.Sv on the behavior of rocking foundations was experimentally investigated. A set of slow, cyclic, horizontal loading tests was conducted on elastic SDOF structures with different shallow foundations. Vertical bearing capacity tests also were conducted to determine the F.Sv more precisely. Furthermore, 10% silt was mixed with the dry sand at a 5% moisture content to reach the minimum apparent cohesion. The results of the vertical bearing capacity tests showed that the bearing capacity coefficients (Nc and Nγ) were influenced by the scaling effect. The results of horizontal cyclic loading tests showed that the trend of increase in capacity was substantially related to the source of nonlinearity and it varied by changing F.Sv. Stiffness degradation was found to occur in the final cycles of loading. The results indicated that the moment capacity and damping ratio of the system in models with lower F.Sv values depended on soil specifications such cohesiveness or non-cohesiveness and were not just a function of F.Sv.

  • There are many technical problems, which can not be resolved by the concept of saturated soil mechanics. Unsaturated soils show an apparent cohesion due to negative pore pressure and relatively lower permeability due to entrapped air compared to saturated soils. The determination of engineering properties of soils with various moisture content is very important to evaluate shear strength and stability of natural and engineered soils. So various researches should be made on unsaturated soils. Especially, sandy soils are widely distributed near Nakdong river, one of the four rivers where Restoration Projects were carried out. Many structures such as dams, flood control facilities, detention facilities and reservoirs have been built in this area. In this study, unsaturated triaxial compressive tests were conducted on sands or silty sands at Nakdong river in order to provide their fundamental characteristics for design and construction of geotechnical structures. As a result of the tests, the maximum deviator stress increased as the confining stress and matric suction increased. The cohesion increased non-linearly as the matric suction increased, but the angle of internal friction was marginally changed.

  • In this study, the increment effect of safety factor according to increasing of horizontal permeability coefficient is analyzed when geocell is installed on the slope for protection. To evaluate the horizontal permeability and reinforcement effect, the laboratory tests such horizontal permeability test were conducted. According to the laboratory test results, as the porosity rate of geocell increases, the coefficient of horizontal permeability is also increased. And also, regardless of the different types of filled materials, the coefficient of horizontal permeability is improved in a geocell reinforced ground compare with the non-reinforced ground. Laboratory test results and the rainfall intensity were applied to the numerical modeling of slope for seepage analysis and stability analysis of slope by using Soilworks, numerical analysis program. As a result of the slope stability analysis, it is confirmed that the installed geocell on the slope facilitates the drainage of water on the surface of slope. Hence, the ground water elevation is suppressed. Therefore, the safety factor of the slope is increased by the increasing of the internal friction angle, apparent cohesion, and coefficient of horizontal permeability by reinforcing the slope with geocell.

  • Since most of soil slopes are in an unsaturated state, it is necessary to consider the unsaturated characteristics of soil slopes, in order to obtain more reasonable results. Therefore in this study we supplemented a slope stability analysis program to consider them, based on the concept of limit equilibrium. We also applied an optimization technique to search for a failure surface. Besides, we carried out experiments to obtain the unsaturated soil properties required in the analysis with weathered granite soils. We formulated a nonlinear apparent cohesion relationship with the matrix suction to be able to apply the unsaturated shear strength characteristics to the stability analysis. In addition, we intended to obtain more accurate soil water characteristic curves(SWCC) by measuring the change in volume of the specimen in the SWCC tests. As a result, we could appropriately assess the change of the safety factor according to the rainfall intensity and duration, by considering the variation of suction, permeability, and shear strength caused by the infiltration of rainfall into slopes.

  • In this paper, characteristics of shear strength and deformation of geosynthetics-reinforced slag materials are described. In order to investigate the effect of geosynthetics on shear strength and deformation behavior of slags, when they are reinforced with geosynthetics or geomat such as PET mat, large triaxial tests were performed under consolidated-drained condition. The materials used in the study are real ones as they are in the field, so that the scale effect of samples disappeared. From the large triaxial tests, it was observed that the stress-strain relationship of geosynthetics-reinforced slags shows relatively small dilatancy and weak tendency of strain hardening, compared with that of slags without reinforcement. The shear strength parameters such as apparent cohesion and internal friction angle increase with PET mat reinforcement, consequently result in about 1.2 (for low confining pressure) to 1.4 (for high confining pressure) times of shear strength of un-reinforced sample. Therefore, the adoption of geomat-reinforced slag layers leads to an increase in the factor of safety for embankment design on soft soil formations.
