Six mature purebred Angus cows ($3.5{\pm}1.5$ years of age, $631.36{\pm}8.63kg$), three pregnant ($250{\pm}7$ days pregnant) and three non-pregnant and eight mature Suffolk ewes ($5{\pm}1.2$ years of age, $68.18{\pm}2.3kg$) four pregnant $115{\pm}5$ days pregnant) and four nonpregnant were utilized in a five-day metabolic trial to determine the effects of gestational status (pregnant vs. non-pregnant) on apparent absorption and retention of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn). Animals were selected based on body weight, age, and gestational status, and randomly assigned to metabolic crates for total fecal and urine collection. Animals were allowed to acclimate to their new environment for seven days. Pregnant and non-pregnant cows and ewes were then paired (within a species) by body weight and pair-fed throughout the 5 day collection period. Copper and Zn intakes were similar for pregnant and non-pregnant animals within a species. Apparent absorption of Cu (p<0.06) and Zn (p<0.04) were higher in pregnant cows relative to non-pregnant cows. Pregnant cows also had a higher apparent retention of Cu (p<0.05) and Zn (p<0.06) relative to non-pregnant cows. Pregnant ewes had a higher (p<0.01) apparent absorption and retention of Zn compared to non-pregnant ewes. However, apparent absorption and retention of Cu were similar for pregnant and non-pregnant ewes. These data indicate that certain physiological and/or metabolic parameters are altered in pregnant cows and ewes consuming an alfalfa-based diet that enhance the apparent absorption and retention of certain trace minerals.

This study investigated the effects of dietary phyate reduction on the apparent absorption and biochemical parameters of iron status in young Korean women. Fourteen healthy, young women consumed low and high phytate diets for ten days of each experimental period. Duplicate diet samples, a fasting blood sample on day 9, and complete fecal samples for five consecutive days starting from day 5 of each diet period were collected. The iron content of diet and fecal samples were analyzed to calculate apparent absorption. Serum samples were analyzed for iron, ferritin, transferrin receptor and TIBC; transferrin saturation was also calculated. The apparent absorption of iron tended to increase in the low phytate period (32.51%) compared to the high phytate period (17.91%), but the difference was not significant (p=0.06). Serum ferritin decreased and serum transferrin receptor increased significantly during the low phytate diet although the mean values were within the normal range. Serum iron and transferrin saturation did not change significantly. In conclusion, the results indicated that reducing dietary phytate for ten days negatively affected iron nutritional parameters, but it moderately and positively affected apparent iron absorption in young Korean women. Further research on the long-term effects of a low phytate diet with an adequate iron content for vows Korean women is necessary.
This study was performed to estimate fille zinc absorption, excretion, and balance of preschool children in Pohang and to evaluate the relationship zinc absorption and related variables. To determine the zinc absorption and excretion, duplicate food samples, pooled faces and urine samples were collected for 3 consecutive days in 21 preschool children. The mean fecal and urine excretions were 7.03mg/day and 0.16mg/day far the boys and 5.87mg/day and 0.15mg/day for the girls. Analyzed daily mean zinc intake was 10.45mg/day for the boys and 7.80mg/day for the girls. The mean ,apparent absorption rate and balance were 29.7% and 3.25mg for the boys and 23.3%, 1.78mg for the girls. Although the mean apparent absorption rate and balance of boys tended to be higher, there was no significant difference between boys and girls. In this study, subjects showed the positive balance except one. Fecal zinc loss reflected dietary zinc (p < 0.01), but urinary zinc loss was unaffected by zinc intake. There was a positive relationship between zinc apparent absorption and zinc balance (p<0.01). These results show that the zinc absorption and balance were favorable.
The present study was designed to investigate the effects of the level of calcium intake on it's apparent absorption rate in college women. Six college girls aged 19 to 20 were fed general dormitary meals containing approximately500mg of calcium for one week and thereafter, the experimental diets containing about 800mg of calcium were given for one week. Average values for calcium intake, fecal excretion of calcium, and apparent absorption rateof calcium in both periods were determined and these values for two periods were compared by using t-test. 1) Average intakes of calcium, protein, and fat of the subjects during the period of experimental diet were significantly higher than those of general diet period. 2) Higher consumption of three food groups; meat, poultry, and fishes, fruits and vegetables, and fats and oils were noted during experimental period. However, there was no significant difference in the consumption of cereals and milk groups during these two periods. 3) The apparent absorption rate of calcium during the experimental period was higher (64%) than the one for general diet period (56%). It was noteworthy that average calcium intakes was higher during the experimental diet period (785mg) than 536mg for general diet period while the fecal excretions of calcium in both periods were not significantly different.

The effects of common Korean dietary fiber-rich foods(dried sea mustard, Lentinus edodes and Korean radish leaves) on total gut transit time of diet, serum cholesterol level and mineral apparent absorption ration and tissue level were investigated. Twenty eight male were divided into 4 groups and were fed a control diet(containing 2% cellulose) and three fiber supplementary diet mixed with 10% of the above dietary fiber rich foods for 4 weeks, respectively. Body weight gain and food efficiency ration were not affected by the supplementary diet of fiber but the total gut transit time of diet was shortened in all dietary fiber groups. The Lentinus edodes reduced significantly serum total cholesterol and increased the HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol ratio at 4th week without and effect on calcium and iron apparent absorptions and tissue levels of the minerals. Radish leaves decreased significantly iron apparent absorption ration with a tendency to increase iron retention in spleen and did not alter serum cholesterol level. Serum cholesterol concentration and calcium and iron apparent absorptions were not significantly altered by the ingestion of sea mustard, while it had more soluble dietary fiber than mushroom and radish leaves.
A number of epidemiological studies has indicated lifestyles including dietary habits are closely related to the development of certain forms of cancer. These findings have led several investigators to identify the ways in which these factors mdulate the risk of cancer. Seaweeds are rich sources of non-digestible polysaccharides which possibly posses physiological functions. In vitro studies showed several components in seaweeds inhibit tumor cell growth and mutagenicity of known food mutagens. On the other hand non-digestible polysaccharides of different food sources negatively affect mineral nutrition by decreasing mineral absorption. The objectives of this study was to investigate the effect of major seaweed intake on azoxymethane(AOM) - induced DNA damage a known cancer initiation step and on apparent absorption of calcium and iron. To accomplish these objectives twenty five ICR mice were divided into five groups and fed one of the following diets for 10 days : control diet d, diet containing 10% water-soluble fraction of seamustard or seatangle diet containing 10% water-insoluble fraction of seamustard or seatangle. AOM was injected 6 hours before sacrifice and N7-methylated guanines from the colonic DNA were quantified using a gas chromatography -mass spectroscopy. Fecal samples were collected on days 4 and 8. Caclium and iron contents of the diets and feces were analyzed using an atomic absorption spectrophotometry to determine the apparent absorption of these minerals. Results are as follows. AOM-induced guanine methylation of colon was decreased in animals fed diets containing water-soluble fractions of seamustard or seatangle compared to those in animals fed control diet although only the seatnagle fed group showed statistically significant effect. Apparent calcium absorption was significantly reduced in animals fed diets containing water-insoluble fractions of seaweeds. Iron absorption was significantly decreased and negatively balanced in animals fed diets containing water-insoluble fractions of both seaweeds, and water-soluble fraction of seatangle. In conclusion, seamustard and seatangle intakes may effectively prevent colon tumorigenesis by reducing a carcinogen-induced DNA damages, and more mechanistic studies on possible role of seaweeds on carcinogenesis are required. Also, adverse effects of seaweed diets cintaming a large amount of polysaccharides on mineral nutrition should be carefully monitored.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the intestinal and nasal absorption enhancement of cefotaxime (CTX) by ion-pairing with counterions and to design an effective oral and intranasal drug delivery system for antibiotics. Counterions for absorption promotion were cationic surfactants [cetylpyridinium chloride (CP), cetrimide (CT) and benzalkonium chloride (BA)]. In the presence of counterions, the apparent partition coefficient of cefotaxime was increased depending on the molar concentration of the counterions. Anion interference was observed for ion-pairing of cefotaxime with counterions because of the counterbalance between an anion and counterions. The present study employed the in situ simultaneous nasal and intestinal perfusion technique in rats. The apparent permeabilities $(P_{app})$ of cefotaxime were $1.43{\pm}0.04{\times}10^{-5}\;cm/sec(mean{\pm}S.E)$ in the nasal cavity and 0 in the jejunum, respectively, which indicated that the intrinsic absorptivity of cefotaxime was greater in the nasal cavity than in the jejunum. When ionupairing formers were used, the decreasing order of apparent cefotaxime permeability $(P_{app},\;10^{-5}\;cm/sec)$, corrected for surface area of absorption, was as followings: $BA\;(7.50{\pm}0.36)\;>\;CT\;(4.92{\pm}0.24)\;>\;CP\;(3.01{\pm}0.17)$ in the jejunum and $BA\;(22.31{\pm}1.36)\;>\;CP\;(18.24{\pm}0.81)\;>\;CT \;(16.22{\pm}1.87)$ in the nasal cavity. The increase in permeability of cefotaxime was about 13-fold in the rat nasal cavity and was marked in the rat jejunum for ion-pairing with counterions as compared to those without ion-pairing. The damages of jejunal and nasal mucosal membrane by counterions were observed within approximately 2hrs after removal of ion-pair of cefotaxime with counterions from the nasal cavity and jejunum. These results suggest that CP can be used as an ion-pairing former in the jejunum and CP and CT can be used as ion-pairing formers in the nasal cavity for cefotaxime, as well as for poorly absorbed drugs with a negative charge due to ionization.

The absorption characteristics of itraconazole, which is an antifungal agent, from intestinal segments in the anesthetized rat i1l situ were investigated in order to design an effective oral drug delivery system. The pH-solubility profile of itraconazole, the rate and extent of absorption of itraconazole, the optimal absorption site(s) of itraconazole and the absorption enhancing effect of sodium cholate on itraconazole were examined in the present study. In situ single-pass perfusion method and recirculating perfusion technique using duodenum(D), jejunum(J) and ileum(I) were employed for the calculation of apparent permeability(Pe) and apparent first-order rate constant(Kobs). respectively. The results of this study were as follows; (1) Itraconazole showed appreciable aqueous solubility only at pH values of below 2.0. (2) pe(cm/sec) decreased in the following order: $D(10.24{\pm}1.78{\times}10^{-4})>J(8.86{\pm}0.79{\times}10^{-4})>I(3.78{\pm}0.13 X 10^{-4})$. (3) $Kobs(min^{-1})$ decreased in the following order: $J(17.12{\pm}3.19{\times}10^{-3})>D(13.37{\pm}0.6{\times}10^{-3})>I(11.05{\pm}0.91{\times}10^{-3})$. (4) The solubility of itraconazole markedly increased with the increase of the concentration of sodium cholate. (5) The addition of 10 mM sodium cholate significantly increased the apparent first-order rate constant of itraconazole in the ileum by a factor of 6.8.
This study was performed to investigate the effect of sources of protein on iron bioavailability in 10 healthy young Korean women. The 18-day metabolic study consisted of a 6-day adaptation period, 6-day moderate protein(60g protein/day, 18mg Fe/day) and 6-day high protein period(90g protein/day, 18mg Fe/day). During the moderate and high protein period, 5 subjects were fed the high plant protein meals(80% plant protein). Fecal excretion of dietary iron was significantly higher(p<0.05) in high protein high plant diet group(HPP, 9.48$\pm$1.61mg/day) than in high protein high animal diet group (HPA, 14.40$\pm$0.89mg/day). Apparent absorption and bioavailability of iron was also significantly higher(p<0.10) in HPA(40.7$\pm$5.3%, 6.46$\pm$1.61mg/day) than in HPP(14.4$\pm$5.3%, 2.39$\pm$0.89mg/day). But there was no significant difference between the high animal protein group and high plant protein group in moderate protein period. Serum iron concentration and transferrin saturation increased as animal protein intake increased, from 106.0$\pm$5.1ug/이 and 30.6$\pm$1.5% for MPA to 129.1$\pm$6.7ug/이 and 37.1$\pm$1.3% for HPA. Statistically positive correlations were shown not only between the level of dietary heme iron and apparent absorption(r=0.95, p<0.05), but also between serum iron concentration and apparent absorption(r=0.64, p<0.05). Negative iron balance was shown in two subjects fed the moderate protein meals. These results suggest that recommanded dietary allowances of iron may be under the need to maintain the positive balance, and iron bioavaliability increase by only high level of animal protein intake.

In this paper, we investigated insulation property of epoxy resin which includes elastomers to improve mechanical property, as varied to additive elastomer contents and to moisture absorption. There are four samples with 5[phr], 10[phr], 15[phr] and 20[phr]. we experimented to acquire insulation property(absorption rate, dissolution rate, apparent rate) and electrical property(perittivity, $tan\delta$, BDV) during respectively the time such as 6[h], 12[h], 18[h], 24[h] for moisture absorption. According to the experimental results, it is appeared that when the additive elastomer contents are increasing or when specimens remain more moisture, absorption rate, dissolution rate, permittivity and $tan\delta$ are slightly increasing but apparent rate and BDV(break-Down Voltage) strength are decreasing in particular, elastomer content [20]phr appeared remarkedly the more increase or decrease than others.
