  • Objectives : The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of oriental medicine public-health program on frozen shoulder patients. Methods : Oriental medicine public-health program was done to 50 frozen shoulder patients who visited Eumseong-gun public health center. Oriental medicine treatment(twice a week for 12 weeks) and prevention-educaiton program was included in public-health program. The schedule was proceeded from 16th March 2010 to 3rd June 2010. The efficacy of program was measured by visual analog scale (VAS), ROM(range of motion), Apley scratch test and Life function score, sleep quality score of their first and last visit. Then we analyzed the improvement in the same group. Results : 1. In VAS change, program showed statistically significant improvement. 2. In ROM(flexion, extension, abduction, adduction) and apley scratch test, program showed statistically significant improvement. 3. In Life function score, program showed statistically significant improvement. 4. In sleep quality score, program also showed improvement, but didn't do statistical significans. Conclusions : The above results suggest that oriental medicine public-health program can be used as effective method for frozen shoulder's treatment and care.

  • Purpose: This study examined the effect of electro-acupuncture stimulation of the infraspinatus and teres major on the shoulder function reduction. The subjects consisted of 20 female patients with a shoulder dysfunction. Methods: The 20 female patients with shoulder dysfunction participated voluntary in this research. 10 minute electro-acupuncture stimulation (frequency: 5Hz, Intensity: below the pain threshold) with Infra-red therapy, 3 times per week given to the patients' Trigger point of the infraspinatus and teres major. The Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Apley's Scratch Test and Global Perceived Effect Scale (GPES) were examined before alter six applications. Results: There was a significant decrease in the VAS (p<0.05) and Apley's Scratch Test (p<0.05). In addition, there was statistically significant increase in the Global Perceived Effect Scale (p<0.05). Therefore, the infraspinatus and teres major is a very important muscle for the shoulder function. Conclusion: This data will be used to develop a treatment method for patients with a shoulder dysfunction. These results suggest that the electro-acupuncture stimulation into the infraspinatus and the teres major Trigger point is an effective intervention for patients with shoulder dysfunction and pain.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this research was to study the effect of Scolopendrid Pharmacopuncture on frozen shoulder patients. Methods : All of the 46 frozen shoulder patients who visited the department of Acupuncture & Moxibustion in Wonkwang Sanbon Medical Center from 1st March 2007 to 30th August 2008 had taken either the Scolopendrid Pharmacopuncture therapy or acupuncture therapy 10 times. There are 23 patients in each group. We evaluated the improvement of their shoulder pain and disability using the Visual Analog Scale(VAS), Shoulder Pain And Diability Index(SPADI), Range of Motion(ROM), and the Apley Scratch test at their first and last visit. Then we analyzed and compared the improvement shown by the two groups. Results : 1. Measures on all tests for the acupuncture group showed statistically significant improvement. 2. Measures on all tests for Scolopendrid Pharmacopuncture showed statistically significant improvement. 3. The Scolopendrid Pharmacopuncture group's VAS and ROM(external, internal rotation) showed statistically significant difference compared with those of the acupuncture group. SPADI, ROM(flexion, extension, abduction, adduction) and Apley scratch test had no statistically significant difference between the two groups. Conclusions : The above results show that Scolopendrid Pharmacopuncture therapy can be used as an effective treatment for reducing frozen shoulder pain.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate effect of Thera-Band stretching exercise on flexibility of shoulder joint. Methods: The research deign was a experimental pre-post control group design. Sixteen subject were randomly divided into two groups; experimental group(n=8) and control group(n=8). Experimental group performed Thera-Band PNF stretching for 4 weeks and control group was not performed. To compare with the effectiveness of Thera-Band PNF stretching between two groups, I measured flexibility of shoulder joint with an Apley scratch test. The data were analyzed by Independence T-test. Results: The experimental group was significantly increased the flexibility at the right and left shoulder internal rotation. But the experimental group was not significantly increased the flexibility at the right and left shoulder external rotation. Conclusion: These result suggest that home-based exercise programs with Thera-Band can serve as a practical and effective means of flexibility gains in general people.

  • Background: The purpose of this study is to investigate basic data about the effects of muscle energy technique on the shoulder complex range of motion and posture alignment in the round shoulder posture. Methods: The subjects included 15 women that gave consent to participate in the study voluntarily. They performed the muscle energy technique for 30 minutes twice. The round shoulder posture was measured with a straight edge ruler. The shoulder complex range of motion was measured with the apley scratch test. The forward head posture was measured with ImageJ. The pectoralis minor muscle length was measured with a tape measure. Results: There were statistically significant differences in the round shoulder posture both right and left (p<.05). The experiment group showed statistically significant differences in the pectoralis minor muscle length (p<.05). There were significant differences in the shoulder complex range of motion including flexion, left lateral flexion, right lateral flexion, left side bending, and right side bending (p<.05), but no significant differences were found in extension (p>.05). The forward head posture showed significant differences in CVA changes (p<.05) and no significant differences in CRA changes (p>.05). Conclusion: These findings demonstrate that the muscle energy technique relaxed muscles around the shoulders and increased the shoulder complex range of motion. The technique is also expected to prevent pain in the neck and shoulders and lower injury risk. In conclusion, the muscle energy technique can be applied as an effective intervention for round shoulder posture.
