Changes in Natural Antioxidants in Oils Extracted from the Bran and Germ of Keumkang and Dark Northern Spring Wheats During Photo-oxidation (금강밀과 dark northern spring밀의 기울과 배아에서 추출한 기름의 광산화 과정 중 천연산화방지성분의 변화)

  • Naturally present antioxidants, tocopherols, carotenoids, and phospholipids in the bran and germ oils from Keumkang (K-WBG oil) and Dark Northern Spring wheats (DNS-WBG oil) were determined during storage under 1700 lux light at $5^{\circ}C$ by HPLC. Oil oxidation was monitored by peroxide values (POV) and conjugated dienoic acid content. The results showed that antioxidants were degraded during storage of the WBG oils under light, with higher degradation rates for carotenoids and phospholipids in the K-WBG oil compared to the DNS-WBG oil. Light increased oil oxidation and the rate of oxidation was higher in K-WBG oil than in the DNS-WBG oil. There was a high correlation between POV and residual amounts of antioxidants during photo-oxidation, with phospholipids showing the greatest effects on POV. This study suggests that a higher amount and lower degradation rate of phospholipids in the DNS-WBG oil contributed to its higher photo-oxidative stability compared to the K-WBG oil.

  • Intracellular antioxidants include low molecular weight scavengers of oxidizing species, and enzymes which degrade superoxide and hydroperoxides. Such antioxidants systems prevent oxidative damage to cellular component by scavenging free radicals and activated oxygen species. Hydrophobic scavengers are found in cell membrane where they interrupt chain reactions of lipid peroxidation. The three major lipophilic antioxidant classes for human health are carotenoids, vitamin E and coenzyme Q10. The biofortification of staple crops with these lipid soluble antioxidants is an attractive strategy to increase the nutritional quality of human food. Here, we have summarized the biosynthetic pathways of three lipid soluble antioxidants in plants and current status of genetic engineered plants for elevated levels of each lipophilic antioxidant.

Influence of antioxidants on β-carotene degradation in nanoemulsions (나노에멀션 내의 베타카로텐 분해에 미치는 산화방지제의 영향)

  • In this study, we examined the effects of carrier oil type (MCT oil: MO, corn oil: CO, palm oil: PO), pH of dispersion solution, and antioxidants on the chemical degradation of ${\beta}$-carotene in oil-in-water nanoemulsions. The pH of the emulsion had a significant influence on the stability of ${\beta}$-carotene, which showed rapid degradation in emulsions at low pH value and relatively higher stability at high pH values. The influence of the carrier oil type on ${\beta}$-carotene stability was assessed. The rate of ${\beta}$-carotene degradation increased in the following order: CO > PO > MO. The effect of antioxidants on ${\beta}$-carotene degradation was monitored during storage at $25^{\circ}C$ for 4 weeks. The rate of ${\beta}$-carotene degradation decreased upon addition of water-soluble (ascorbic acid) or oil-soluble (tocopherol) antioxidants. In general, tocopherol was more effective than ascorbic acid in reducing ${\beta}$-carotene degradation. To utilize this nanoemulsion for producing acidic beverages, adding a higher concentration of antioxidants is required.

Effect of oral antioxidants on the progression of canine senile cataracts: a retrospective study

  • Background: Cataracts are the leading cause of impaired vision or blindness in dogs. There are many antioxidants that can prevent cataract progression, but whether they are clinically effective in dogs has not been established. Objectives: To analyze the delaying or preventing effect of oral antioxidants on canine senile cataracts through retrospective analysis. Methods: Medical records of dogs from January 1, 2015 to July 10, 2020 were reviewed. Dogs that were 8 yr of age or older with senile cataracts were included in this study. The dogs were divided into two treatment groups (dogs administered with Ocu-GLO supplement and dogs administered with Meni-One Eye R/C supplement) and a control group (dogs that were not administered any supplement). Dogs with incipient and immature cataracts were included in this study. Altogether, 112 dogs (156 eyes) with incipient cataracts and 60 dogs (77 eyes) with immature cataracts were included. The period of time that cataracts progressed from incipient to immature, and from immature to mature was recorded for each dog. Results: There was no significant delaying effect on the progression of incipient cataracts. However, both Ocu-GLO (hazard ratio = 0.265, p = 0.026) and Meni-One (hazard ratio = 0.246, p = 0.005) significantly delayed the progression of immature cataracts compared to the control group. Conclusions: Although there was no significant delaying effect of oral antioxidants on incipient cataract progression, antioxidants could be used to delay the progression of senile immature cataract.

  • The effects of ethanol, tweens and antioxidants to sodium ampicillin solution are studied. From the result of this experiment, 10% sodium ampicillin solution degradation decreased with addition of 1.0% Tween 80 or Tween 60. The sodium ampicillin solution added antioxidants such as 0.2% rongalite, 0.2% Na$_{2}$S$_{2}$O$_{4}$, 0.2% Na$_{2}$S$_{2}$O$_{5}$ 0.2% NaJ degraded more rapidly than the solution.n.

Effect of Antioxidants on the Oxidative Stability of Biodiesel Fuels (항산화제가 바이오디젤유의 산화안정성에 미치는 영향)

  • Biodiesel fuel that consists of saturated and unsaturated long-chain fatty acid alkyl esters is an alternative diesel fuel produced from vegetable oils or animal fats. However, air causes autoxidation of biodiesel fuel during storage, which can reduce fuel quality by adversely affecting its properties, such as the kinematic viscosity and acid value. One approach for improving the resistance of fatty derivatives to autoxidation is to mix them with antioxidants. This study investigated the effectiveness of five such antioxidants in mixtures with biodiesel fuels produced by three biodiesel manufacturers : tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), propyl gallate (PrG) and $\alpha$-tocopherol. Oxidation stability was determined using Rancimat equipment. The results show that TBHQ, BHA, and BHT were the most effective and $\alpha$-tocopherol was the least effective at increasing the oxidation stability of biodiesel. This study recommends that TBHQ and PrG be used for safeguarding biodiesel fuel from the effects of autoxidation during storage.

Effect of Metal Ions on Speroxide Dismutase of the Liver in Senescence-Accelerated Mouse(SAM) (노화촉진생쥐(SAM)의 간에서 금속이온이 SOD의 활성에 미치는 영향)

  • This research employed a senescence-accelerated mouse(SAM) to explore the possibility that differences exits among the major antioxidants, superoxid dismutase(SOD), in terms of ability to protect such animal treated with Cu, Fe and Mn. To assess the antioxidants function of metal ions on SAM-R/1 and SAM-P/8 were administered with Cu, Fe and Mn orally. The effect of metal ions on SAM towards reversing oxygen sensitivity was determined as a bioassays of SOD in the mouse liver. The data show that the SOD activity was induced by each metal ions in both SAM-R/1 and SAM-P/8. It suggested that induced SOD by each metal ions may protect against oxidative mediated stress. Finally, overall data lead to the possibility of metal ions as an antioxidants or each metal ions act producer of oxygen radicals in the liver of SAM-R/1 and SAM-P/8.

  • Biodiesel fuels contain unsaturated fatty acid ester, which can easily oxidize, especially when exposed to ultraviolet light. The products formed by this oxidation give rise to sediment or gum formation. As a result, the fuel can contribute to the corrosion and plugging of the filter pump. Antioxidants have been used in an effort to stabilize biodiesels, but there is still a need for a biodiesel composition with improved oxidation stability. In general, good fuel compositions should provide synergistic combinations of a biodiesel and antioxidants. Our work involved the synthesis of antioxidants to improve the oxidative stability of biodiesel fuel.

  • Ozone(O$_3$), one of best-known toxic air pollutant, act as a strong oxidant. It is possible that skins exposed to the air can be easily damaged by such oxidative air pollutants. Therefore, in the present study, anti-oxidative effects of natural product. on $O_2$ㆍ and ㆍOH were investigated by EPR. Ozone caused protein damage and lipid oxidation, in HaCaT and B16F10 leading ultimately to programmed cell death. It also reduced the level of antioxidant molecules including ascorbic acid and tocopherol in stratum comeum. However, antioxidants originated from natural products could protect skin from these products could protect skin from these oxidative damages. We concluded that eight natural extracts including Rosa davurica, Ligularia sibrica, Green tea acted as strong antioxidants against ozone.

  • This research was planned and executed to evaluate how the nutritional composition and antioxidants contents and antioxidative activity of Hongsambak. Also, can effect health conditions of people who are suffering from diet-related disease like obesity and hyperlipidemia by taking healthy foods with Hongsambak in a form of nutritional supplement with our daily meals. With this observation, we found out that Hongsambak has high content of dietary fiber and effect on antioxidative activity. We concluded that we could apply the components in a form of various foods. The information we received from this conclusion will be a basic information on how we can apply oriental medicinal resources into other foods and in the field of functional food research, which already draes sizable attention world-wide.
