This research was conducted to investigate antioxidant activities of Juglans mandshrica forages by the irradiation of far infrared ray during leaf drying processes before compound extraction, with its potential use for activating antioxidants. The contents of total phenolics and flavonoids in the basis of a gram leaf dry weight were maximized in 20 min at 30 V of far infrared irradiation. Total phenolic content was 25.43 mg/g in the FIR treatment, while it was 21.12 mg/g in the non-FIR treatment control. Total flavonoid content was 39.38 mg/g in the FIR treatment, while it was 32.78 mg/g in the non-FIR treatment control. The contents were decreased when the condition of far infrared ray irradiation was higher voltage and longer treatment time, exhibiting 16.93 mg/g of total phenolics and 23.78 mg/g of total flavonoids in 30 min at 50 V of far infrared irradiation. The antioxidant activities were shown to positive relationships with the contents of total phenolics and total flavonoids. In this study, we concluded that content of bioactive molecules relating antioxidant activity in Juglans mandshrica forages is optimized in 20 min at 30 V of far infrared irradiation for leaf drying process.
The aim of this study was to analyze antioxidant activity, total phenolics, and vitamin C content in unripe and ripe jujube cultivar and to investigate correlation between antioxidant and chemical constituents including total phenolics and vitamin C. The antioxidant activity was measured by the DPPH radical scavenging activity, ABTS radical scavenging activity, and reducing power. Although, the weight, diameter and soluble solids of Zyziphus jujuba fruit were increased with the progress of ripening, antioxidant activity and total phenolics were decrease during ripening. The highest free-radical scavenging activity (at 2.5 ㎎/㎖) and reducing power (at 1 ㎎/㎖) in fruit were 81.75% (Bokjo, unripe) and 0.80 (Mudeung, unripe), respectively. The highest total phenolic content in unripe fruit of Mudeung was 62.50 ㎍/g. A linear correlation (r=0.911) was shown between DPPH radical scavenging activity and total phenolic content.
Total phenolics and flavonoids, and the antioxidant capacity of plum cultivar wines (Prunus salicina L. cv. Soldam and P. salicina L. cv. Formosa) were determined using spectrophotometric methods. The total phenolic and flavanoid contents of Soldam wine were $478.4\;{\pm}\;5.6\;mg$ GAE and $202.4\;{\pm}\;7.5\;mg$ CE per L,respectively, and in Formosa wine were $200.6\;{\pm}\;7.5\;mg$ GAE and $64.4\;{\pm}\;6.8\;mg$ CE per L, respectively. Neutral and acidic phenolics in Soldam wine were extracted with ethyl acetate and 0.01 N HCl, respectively. In the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging assay, neutral phenolics (64.5 EDA%) had $3{\sim}4$ times higher antioxidant activity than acidic phenolics (21.5 EDA%) and other related phenolic compounds such as chlorogenic acid (15.5 EDA%) and quercetin (24.6 EDA%) at a concentration of $100\;{\mu}g/mL$. The antiviral activities of neutral and acidic phenolics in Soldam wine were investigated in vitro using a virus-induced cytopathic effect (CPE) inhibition assay. Results showed that neutral and acidic phenolics at concentrations of $100\;{\mu}g/mL$ inhibited porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) replication at rates of 78.12% and 58.37%, respectively. The inhibition rate of 10 g/mL neutral phenolics (69.42%) was higher than that of ribavirin as an antiviral reagent (57.86%). At concentrations of $100\;{\mu}g/mL$ or less, neutral and acidic phenolics of Soldam wine had no cytotoxic effect against vero cells.
This study was performed to investigate antioxidant activity of various solvent extracts (methanol, ethanol, acetone and water) from canola meal. As the concentration of all extracts increased, antioxidant activities increased gradually. Among solvent extracts from canola meal, methanol extract showed the highest antioxidant activities with $EC_{50}$ values of 0.9, 3.5, 1.3, and 8.5 mg/mL for DPPH radical scavenging ability, ABTS radical scavenging ability, reducing power, and chelating ability, respectively, and it had the highest total phenolics and total flavonoids contents. Furthermore, methanol extract was fractionated into three fractions (MF 1, MF 2, and MF 3) using Sephadex LH-20 column. The highest antioxidant activity was found on MF 2 for DPPH radical scavenging ability, on MF 3 for ABTS radical scavenging ability and reducing power, and on MF 1 for chelating ability at the same concentration of 1.5 mg/mL. The results indicated that each fraction containing various antioxidant materials seemed to have different influence at each antioxidant activity.
This study was planned to investigate the effect of 40 plant ethanolic extracts on antioxidant activities in vitro. The total phenolics, $\beta$-carotene, $\alpha$-tocopherol and selenium contents were also determined . Antioxidant activities fo the ethanolic extracts(0.02%, w/w) in the soybean oil were measured both by determining the peroxide value (POV) during 35 days of storage at 4$0^{\circ}C$ in a forced draft air-incubator and by determining changes in conductivity at 11$0^{\circ}C$(Rancimat method.). Soybean oil without any additives was used as a control and that treated with 0.02% BHT was used as a positive control. Based on the POV determination, green tea extract was found to be the most effective in stabilizing soybean oil, then followed by long tea, which both of them showed higher antioxidant activities compared to the BHT treatment. The antioxidant activities of them showed higher antioxidant activities compared to the BHT treatment. the antioxidant activities of coffee, cinnamomi cortex, acanthopanacis cortex, black tea, orange peel , instant coffee, peony and crni fructus extracts were stronger compared to the control .By the Rancimat method, green tea leaf and oolong tea leaf, foxglove, acanthopanacis cortex and peony extracts. Compared to other extracts, green tea leaf, black tea leaf, foxglove, acanthopanacis cortex and peony extracts had stronger antioxidative effects in both the POV and Rancimat methods used in this study. ethanolic extracts which showed the stronger antioxidative effect also has the higher contents of total phenolics, $\beta$-carotene, and/or $\alpha$-tocopherol. The antioxidative effect of ethanolic extracts was found to be due to the combined effect of various antioxidants.
Contents of phenolics and flavonoids, antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity were investigated in the methanol extracts of three different $Taraxacum$ species, $Taraxacum$$coreanum$, $Taraxacum$$mongolicum$, and $Taraxacum$$officinale$. Total phenolics content at $1000mg\;kg^{-1}$ was more present in shoot parts than in roots, and was highest in $T.$$mongolicum$ shoot and root extracts (76.8 and $40.0mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively), followed by $T.$$coreanum$ and $T.$$officinale$ ($p$ < 0.05). Total flavonoid level had same tendency to total phenolics among $Taraxacum$ species, showing lower amounts ($6.5{\sim}36.4mg\;kg^{-1}$) than total phenolics. The antioxidant activity of the methanol extracts from all the species dose-dependently increased. DPPH free radical scavenging activity at $1,000mg\;kg^{-1}$ was highest in shoot and root extracts from $T.$$mongolicum$ by 89.6 and 83.4%, respectively. According to MTT assay, cell viability of Calu-6 (human pulmonary carcinoma) was lowest in the $T.$$mongolicum$ shoot and root extracts ($IC_{50}$ values=83.4 and $66.4mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively), and followed by $T.$$coreanum$ and $T.$$officinale$ (lowest). Calu-6 was more sensitive to the extracts than SNU-601 (human gastric carcinoma). Antioxidative and anticancer activities in three different $Taraxacum$ species was more correlated with total phenolics content ($r^2$=0.0097 to 0.6213) than with total flavonoids level ($r^2$=0.0027 to 0.4627). The results showed total phenolics content and total flavonoids level were highly correlated with anticancer activity and antioxidant activity, and their content and activities were different depending on species.

Hardy kiwifruits (Actinidia arguta Planch.) have high amounts of antioxidants, including ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and phenolics. The anti-cholinesterase activity and neuroprotective effects of three different cultivars of hardy kiwifruits, cv. Mansu (A. arguta × A. deliciosa), cv. Haeyeon (A. arguta), and cv. Chiak (A. arguta), on PC-12 and SH-SY5Y cells were evaluated. Extraction of phenolics and vitamin C was carried out using 80% (v/v) aqueous ethanol and metaphosphoric acid assisted with homogenization, respectively. Hardy kiwifruit of cv. Mansu showed higher total phenolic, total flavonoid, and vitamin C contents and antioxidant capacity compared to the other two cultivars of hardy kiwifruits, cv. Haeyeon and cv. Chiak. Analysis of high-performance liquid chromatography results revealed the presence of procyanidin B2, (-)-epicatechin, neochlorogenic acid, cryptochlorogenic acid, rutin, hyperoside, isoquercitrin, and astragalin in hardy kiwifruits. The three cultivars of hardy kiwifruits had a wide range of vitamin C content of 55.2-130.0 mg/100 g fresh weight. All three cultivars of hardy kiwifruits had protective effects on neuronal PC-12 and SH-SY5Y cells exposed to hydrogen peroxide by increasing cell viability and reducing intracellular oxidative stress. Furthermore, the hardy kiwifruits inhibited acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase. Collectively, these results suggest that hardy kiwifruits rich in antioxidants like phenolics and vitamin C have good potential as functional materials in neuroprotective applications.
The ash content, mineral composition, total phenolics, antioxidant capacity, and neuroprotective effect of the antlers of deer fed with herb-incorporated feedstuff (HFS) or normal feedstuff (NFS) were comparatively evaluated. The contents of ash and mineral of the antler of deer fed with HFS were significantly lower than its counterpart. The ash and mineral contents of deer antlers decreased generally from the upper section toward the tip section. The ratios of Ca/ash, Ca/P, and Ca/Fe of antler of deer fed with HFS were lower than those of antler of deer fed with NFS. Antlers of deer fed with HFS had higher total phenolics, nitrite scavenging capacity, and antioxidant capacity than those of deer fed with NFS. Antlers of deer fed with HFS or NFS showed in vitro neuronal protection of PC-12 cells against oxidative stress in a dose-dependent manner, where antler of deer fed with HFS generally had higher cellular viability than NFS. These results above suggest that the incorporation of the medicinal herbal complex into feedstuff may improve the biological effects of deer antlers.
Plectranthus amboinicus Benth (Lamiaceae) is a medicinal plant native to India, and its leaves are widely used in several traditional medicinal preparations. The purpose of this study was to detect and quantify phenolics present in ethyl acetate and acetone extracts of P. amboinicus leaves, and evaluate their antioxidant, antibacterial, antimutagenic and anticancer activities. The HPLC chromatograms of crude leaf extracts indicated the presence of phenolics like caffeic acid, coumaric acid, rutin, quercetin and gallic acid, which were present in the range of 0.01 - 1.41 mg/g in ethyl acetate and 0.03 - 1.93 mg/g in the acetone extract. The acetone extract showed statistically (p < 0.05) higher antioxidant activity ($IC_{50}$, 99.59 ${\mu}g/ml$) than ethyl acetate extract ($IC_{50}$, 149.96 ${\mu}g/ml$). Statistically (p < 0.05) higher antimutagenicity was shown by acetone extract (46.16%) as compare to ethyl acetate extract (12.16%) at 500 ${\mu}g/plate$ concentration. The acetone extract showed higher antibacterial activity than ethyl acetate extract, and both the extracts showed highest activity against B. cereus (375 and 625 ${\mu}g/ml$, respectively) and lowest activity against Y. enterocolitica (1000 and 1125 ${\mu}g/ml$, respectively). Both the extracts also showed inhibitory effect on cancer cell lines HCT-15 and MCF-7. These results suggest that the leaves of P. amboinicus possess various biological activities, and validate the traditional use of the leaves of P. amboinicus against cold, infection and ulceration.
