Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is an epidemiologically important virus with a worldwide distribution. It causes acute hepatitis in humans. HAV infection is often subclinical or asymptomatic in children; however, symptomatic acute infections become more common with age. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of anti-HAV among hospital workers in Jeonbuk province. 447 (127 males, 320 females) persons were included in the study from January to June, 2011. Anti-HAV (total and IgM) in the sample serum was measured by VIDAS Hepatitis A (bioMerieux, France), and IgM positive samples were tested in terms of their serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels by a HITACHI 7600-010 automatic analyzer (HITACHI, Japan). The overall prevalence of total anti-HAV was 45.9% (205/447), and rate for males (60.6%) was higher than that for females (40%). According to the age group, the prevalence rates of total anti-HAV were 20% (1/5) in those under 20 years old, 11.3% (18/160) in those 20-29 years, 49.7% (71/143) in those 30-39 years, 86.5% (83/96) in those 40-49 years, 92.9% (26/28) in those 50-59 years, and 40% (6/15) in those over 60 years old. The total prevalence of anti-HAV IgM was 0.8% (4/447), and rate for males (1.6%) was higher than that for females (0.6%). Through this study, we determined the prevalence of anti-HAV among hospital workers in Jeonbuk province. The prevalence of the HAV antibody overall was low in hospital workers under 40 years old and in those over 60 years old. Therefore, an improvement in sanitary conditions and hygiene and vaccinations against HAV in this population are recommended.

A Total of 703 swine sera from 55 swine farrns (Mar. 1998 through Feb. 2001) were nation-wide collected for the presence of the antibody to influenza A virus H3 subtype isolate. The presence of antibody was tested by hernagglutination inhibition with chicken red blood cells and seropositiveness was determined by HI titer ${\geq}1$: 40. Sero-prevalence was evaluated based on year, season, region and age, respectively. In consequence, there were seme differences by year, season and region, respectively. High susceptibility was routinely observed in 60 and 90 day-old piglets. Therefore, it seems that the sero-prevalence to swine influenza virus H3 subtype isolate is useful for the prevention and control of swine influenza in Korea.
An indirect immunofluorescent antibody test was applied to survey the antibody prevalence on five canine viruses including canine distempervirus(CDV), canine parvovirus(CPV), canine coronavirus(CCV), canine adenovirus type-2(CAV-2), canine parainfluenzavirus(CPIV) in dogs. The period studied was from October 1992 to June 1993. A total of 80 dog sera was collected from veterinary clinics in Kwangju and Seoul, and examined for the presence of virus antibodies. Immunofluorescent antibodies(IFA) to all viruses were present in a high percentage of 80 sera tested. Seventyfive(93.8%) showed detectable IFA against CPV, 67(83.8%) against CDV, 51(63.8%) against CCV, 42(52.5%) against CPIV and 34(42.5%) against CAV-2. These suggested that all viruses were endemic in the communities. IFA levels against each virus were also distributed fairly irregularly. IFAs for CDV and CPV were detected more frequently with a relatively high incidence in vaccinated group less than 1 years of age. IFAs for CAV-2 were detected more frequently with growing age. In the correlation of clinical signs and antibody prevalence, dogs that showed hematochezia and vomiting had high titers in the positive sera is noteworthy, particularly for CDV and CPV. The significance between dogs those who had diarrhea, dyspnea and salivation and those viruses were obscure.
A serological survey was performed to establish basic data for the prevalence of antibodies to some major diseases of domesticated boar serum samples from January to December 2000. Sera collected in breeding farms in Gyeongbuk province were tested for Aujeszky's disease virus(ADV), Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus(PRRSV), Porcine parvovirus(PPV), Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), Bordetella bronchiseptica(B bronchiseptica), Mycoplasma ; APP), Toxoplasma, and Brucella. There was no antibody to ADV in domesticated boars serum samples detected by Anti-ADV-gpI assay kit. Sero-positive samples to PRRS by IFA were 0.9%(3/330) The HI titers to PPV ranged variously from less than 10 to over 1,280. Two hundred ninety-four out of 330 tested sera showed HI titer of less than 10. In HI test to JEV, 90.3% of the sera (298/330) were below 10. The majority of the serum samples had low prevalence of the antibody B bronchiseptica. ELISA titers to M hyopneumoniae ranged variously from $\leq$ 10 to $\geq$ 1,280. Antibody titers to A pleuropneumoniae type 2(APP2) and type 5(APP5) were 58.2% and 52.7%, respectively, and the tested samples showing ELISA antibody titers of less than 20. There was no significant geographical difference between APP2 and APP5 in this study. In the antibody test of Toxoplasma, 11.5%(38/330) were positive and samples were all negative in sera test of Brucella.
To investigate epidemological sitution of bovine viral diarrhea infection, serological survey in cattle being raised in Young Dong province were conducted. Bovine sera collected ramdomly from August 1990 to December 1990 were tested for bovine viral diarrhea virus serum neutralizing antibody titers. The results were as follows 1. BVDV SN antibody levels were considerably varies and positive rate was 58(108 heads out of 186) 2. BVDV SN antibodies to breeds of cattle was various and positive rates showed that diary cattle, beef, native cattle(Korean) were 67.52%, 59.38%, 27.00% respectively followed in that order. 3. In the regional prevalence of BVD SN antibodies in cattle, Alpine(92%) was the highest, Young Dong south(59%) middle(44%), and North 30% followed in that order 4. In the age relatated prevalence of BVD SN antibodies, the younger than 6 month old group was the highest 65.7%, and older than 25 month old group was also at 62.2%. Then, 7 to 12 moth old group and 13 to 24 month old group showed to 58.5%, 52.1% respectively. 5. The geometric mean titer (log2) of 108 cattle serum samples showing positive BVD SN antibodies was 4.3. 6. In the geometric mean titer(log2) according to age, younger than 6 month old group (5.2) was the highest, then 7 to 12 month old group 2.8(SD=1.94 standard deviation) was lowliest.
Avian reovirus (ARV) is the pathogenic agent of tenosynovitis and malabsorption syndrome in broiler, which has caused significant economical losses due to poor feeder efficiency and stunting. In order to determine the prevalence of ARV infection in poultry farms in Jeonbuk province, Korea, we performed a surveillance study by testing 179 cecal samples from 131 broiler farms for virus detection, and 1,181 serum samples from 33 broiler farms (n=292) and 22 broiler breeder farms (n=1,525) for antibody detection in the province. Virological examination using RT-PCR showed that ARV were detected in 26.0% of the tested farms (34/131),with the highest positive rates in broilers of 6 days old or more in summer season. In serological test using ELISA, broiler and broiler breeder farms examined were all ARV antibody positive. In broiler, the positive rate and antibody titers showed a tendency to decrease with age in contrast to those of broiler breeders. Our results indicate that ARV is ubiquitous in broilers and broiler breeders in the province.
The present study was undertaken to develop the kit for indirect immunofluorescence antibody test(IFAT) and to investigate the prevalence of N caninum in cattle and dogs in Korea. The neo-antigen kit of IFAT developed in our laboratory was proved diagnostic efficacy by compared with the kit of veterinary medical research and development(VMRD). A survey of N caninum infections among cow and dogs in elevn areas of southern part of country was performed using a IFAT. The infection rate of 190 nationwide cattle was 8.4%(16/190) but was 75%(45/60) at P area in Chunnam province where the cattle showed the abortion repeatedly. Any of the dogs was not N caninum -positive in the Kangwon and Kyonggi areas.
The purposes of this study were to survey the seroprevalence of canine coronavirus(CCV) in healthy adult dogs and to determine whether there was any relationship between seroprevalence and the host parameters. Serum samples for determination of serum neutralization antibody titers against CCV were obtained from 812 healthy adult dogs over 1 year old brought to veterinary clinics for routine health care visit in 4 provinces from January 2003 to April 2004. Of the 812 dogs, 714(87.9%) had positive antibody titers(more than 1:4) against CCV. The prevalence of positive CCV antibody titers were not significantly associated with age, sex, rearing province and environment, and vaccination status. However, the positive CCV antibody titers were increasing with the age. These serological findings have shown that prevalence of positive CCV antibody titers in Korean dogs were a relatively high and that CCV infection was widespread in Korean dog population. These suggest that it may be as important to protect dogs against infection with CCV as it is to vaccinate against canine parvovirus.
This study was conducted from May to December 2016 to investigate the prevalence of antibody titers for Newcastle disease (ND), Infectious Bronchitis (IB), Egg drop syndrome (EDS), Avian pneumovirus (APV), Fowl Typhoid (FT), Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG), Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) in laying hens in Incheon area. In ND, 418 (99.5%) of the 420 outbreaks were positive. IB showed 330 (78.5%) positive antibody out of 420 cases. EDS showed 419 (99.7%) positive seropositive rates among 420 cases. In the case of APV, 357 cases (85%) were positive in 420 cases. In the case of PT, the positive rate of antibody was 128 (30.4%) out of 420 cases. Among the 420 cases of MG, 222 cases (52.8%) were positive for antibodies. In the case of MS, 395 out of 420 cases (94.0%) were positive. This result suggests that the positive rate of antibody for PT in Incheon area was low. And it was also clear that MS without vaccine is now rampant in Incheon.
Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is very important disease in domestic and wild ruminants and has a world wide distribution. Cattle persistently infected with BVDV (BVDV-PI) are the primary reservoir for BVDV infection in Korean native cattle herds. The prevalence of cattle persistently infected with BVDV (BVD-PI) was determined using 4,260 heads from 29 Korean native cattle farms at 8 districts from 2011 to 2012. The sera and ear nothches were collected for each sample. We surveyed BVD-PI cattle using antibody ELISA and antigen capture ELISA for detection of antibody and antigen respectively. Three thousand seventy-six cattle (72.2%) were positive for BVDV antibody and a total of 27 BVD-PI cattle were found in 12 farms. 11 cattle (40.7%) out of the total 27 BVDV-PI cattle were six months old or under. The positive rate of BVDV antibody (83.2%) from 12 farms with BVD-PI cattle was higher than the positive rate of BVDV antibody (63.6%) from 17 farms without BVD-PI cattle.
