The Voice of the Imperial in an Anti-Imperialist Tone: George Orwell's Burmese Days

  • First published in 1934, George Orwell's Burmese Days, which can be read as an example of both descriptive realism and fictional realism, is considered to be a colonial example of British literature because of its publication date. However, based on the personal experience of the author as an imperial officer in Burma, the novel has an anti-imperialist tone, which can also make it possible to read it through postcolonial eyes. As a result, the novel stands as an example of ambivalence since it has both the colonial and the postcolonial perspective; both the colonizer and the colonized are portrayed with their own flaws, adding to the impact of what can be called "Third Space." This is why the voice of the imperial is heard in an anti-imperialist tone in Burmese Days, through which Orwell presents a critique of colonialism with a from-within approach.

  • This study examines the themes the two authors shared - anti-colonialism, anti-imperialism, anti-imperialism, and anti-ideology - 《The Myth of the 20th Century》 and 《The Age of Passion》, 《Waiting for the Barbarians》 and 《Disgrace》. Both pieces opposed imperialist aggression and oppression and rejected colonial rule with the issue of their identity as strangers, and stood up against huge powers, including the fictionalization of ideology, racism, and despotism. Kim Hak-chul understood communism as a humanitarian, not a personal cult or individual dictatorship. Most of his work is autobiographical novels that he has experienced and are based on realism. Kim Hak-chul voluntarily chose China to actively fight against reality and showed the reality as it is to change history and politics, but Coetzee did not directly reveal the relationship between the perpetrator and victim, the ruler and the one being ruled, but maintained a certain distance from politics, revealing the reality of society and its system.

  • Constructionists believe that mathematical knowledge is obtained by a series of purely mental constructions, with all mathematical objects existing only in the mind of the mathematician. But constructivism runs the risk of rejecting the classical laws of logic, especially the principle of bivalence and L. E. M.(Law of the Excluded Middle). This philosophy of mathematics also does not take into account the external world, and when it is taken to extremes it can mean that there is no possibility of communication from one mind to another. Two constructionists, Brouwer and Dummett, are common in rejecting the L. E. M. as a basic law of logic. As indicated by Dummett, those who first realized that rejecting realism entailed rejecting classical logic were the intuitionists of the school of Brouwer. However for Dummett, the debate between realists and antirealists is in fact a debate about semantics - about how language gets its meaning. This difference of initial viewpoints between the two constructionists makes Brouwer the intuitionist and Dummettthe the semantic anti-realist. This paper is confined to show that Dummett's proposal in favor of intuitionism differs from that of Brouwer. Brouwer's intuitionism maintained that the meaning of a mathematical sentence is essentially private and incommunicable. In contrast, Dummett's semantic anti-realism argument stresses the public and communicable character of the meaning of mathematical sentences.

Cold War Liberalism in Postwar Japan: An Interpretation of Maruyama Masao's Realistic Liberalism (냉전과 일본의 자유주의- 마루야마 마사오의 냉전자유주의와 리얼리즘)

  • This paper explains what Japanese progressive liberalism was in postwar Japan by clarifying Maruyama Masao's "Cold War Liberalism," focusing especially on his realism and nationalism searching for "democracy" and "peace" in the context of the early Cold War Japan. Maruyama's Cold War liberalism can be grasped from two perspectives: how the Cold War defined his liberalism and how Maruyama interpreted the Cold War as a liberalist in postwar Japan. The liberal interpretation of the Cold War captures the spatial manifestations of liberalism in the Cold War while Cold War liberalism was to grasp the temporal succession of modern Japan. Maruyama revealed his liberal thinking by combining it to his idea of nationalism and realism. He was concerned about the reshaping of the fascist atmosphere provoked by anti-communism emerging from 186 | 동북아역사논총 59호the Cold War confrontation structure. He sought "neutrality" and "peace" to overcome the so-called "two worlds" of the Cold War. And he stressed the importance of "fair judgment" and "autonomous association" to restrain the fascistic atmosphere in postwar Japan. For Maruyama, subjectivity aimed at the concept of "nation" rather than "citizen," and nationalism was a condition for "democracy" and "peace" in postwar Japan. Maruyama's critical liberalism worked through nationalism and realism.

A Study on the Patterns of New Terrorism through the Comparative Analysis with Conventional Terrorism (고전적 테러리즘과의 비교 분석을 통한 뉴 테러리즘 양상에 대한 연구)

  • We can feel the fear through the reports of outbreaking centers of terror. Also, we noticed through "the 9.11 terror" that there exists no safety zone from terrorism. However, we should question ourselves whether we are relaxing attention or ceasing anxiety too much in the perimeter, as in the peninsula of Korea. Through "the 9.11 terror", the vulnerability of the United State's homeland security has been exposed, giving a serious damage to the national pride. President Bush started the war against terror to strengthen global joints of anti-terrorism, identify terrorists and contribute to the global peace, adopting offensive realism including preemptive attack concept which means to remove the threat preemptively. In today's reality of international politics, where the inhuman, indiscriminate, and anti-civilizational international terror became greater, extending to the stage of war, the international societies' agony and focus lies on how to banish it. The 9.11 terrorism, which is a new form of terrorism, is being distinguished from conventional terrorism into new terrorism. New terrorism is a new form of terrorism meaning that you do not know the enemy, the goal does not exist and they conscientiously use the weapons of mass destruction. This paper is a work meant to help understanding new terrorism, the new form, by a comparative analysis with the conventional terrorism. Therefore the origin, concept and general characteristics new terrorism is picked out and the representative forms of it, which are suicide bombing, cyber, biochemical and nuclear terrorism, are analyzed in detail in theoretical manner.

  • The present paper investigate the trace to the course of its development of Mathematical philosophy. Of the main questions which naturally suggest themselves, it will be considered by the changing process of Mathematical philosophy. The explicit sources for a history of Mathematical philosophy.,or more especially, for the relation of mathematics to philosophy, are relatively few. There is, moreover, much disagreement and dispute on the extent, influence and relation of mathematics to the philosophy of individual thinkers. A passing emphasis must be laid on the mutual influence of mathematics and philosophy on each other in the course of their development.

Considering Issues of Vision in Panoptical Representation: Bentham, Bender, Fried, and Mayhew (파놉티콘적 재현에 나타난 시각성의 여러 측면들: 벤쌈, 벤더, 프리드, 메이휴)

  • This essay aims to develop a critical approach of interpretation in examining the panoptical condition of representation that is said to permeate the tradition of modern realism in novels and paintings. In defining this approach, I am interested in the problem or inability of panoptical representation to tell a coherent story of solitude(solitary confinement, isolation, self-absorption, etc.) in a range of texts from prison documents to paintings and novels, and also what might occasion such an inability including social, material, or stylistic contradictions and conflicting epistemological angles. This task potentially anticipates a trajectory of readings and investigations that cuts through the history of panoptical representation, which is outside the scope of this essay. In this writing, I will engage in a series of debates with what I consider as major theories and views of panoptical representation offered by Jeremy Bentham, John Bender, and Michael Fried. Based on this, I will formulate a conceptual or methodological frame of discourse that would envisage an anti-panoptical approach of interpretation. As an attempt to validate this formulation, I will offer a reading of Henry Mayhew's Criminal Prisons of London and Scenes of Prison Life(1862), a case of panoptical representation that produces a peculiar sense of ambivalence while accounting for sites of penal solitude.

  • This paper introduces experimental design and components model for analysing the impact of parameter(in the field of kinematics and sensor) on performance of hard-kill torpedo defence system. The simulation is implemented at the level of engagement and its scope is limited to final stage of engagement where main function of anti-torpedo system is operating. It improves the fidelity of physical realism by precise model of simulation components in the perspectives of kinematics, sensor capability and acoustic detection theory. This paper provides the experimentation methodology for evaluating parameter sensitivity which is required to analyze in advance of development the defense system with novel concepts. In addition, the experimental result shows the tendency of defense capability according to parameter adjustments.

An Epistemology of Geomorphology and An Ontological Approach to Geomorphology Education (지형 지식의 인식론적 특성과 존재론적 지형 교육)

  • The purpose of this paper is to suggest a particular approach to geomorphology education based on an epistemology (anti-realist of geomorphology knowledge. Anti-realist epistemology of geomorphology may be characterized by the belief that (1) geomorphology knowledge is made or constructed rather than discovered, (2) knowledge construction begins with the perception of meaningfulness of the landform, and (3) it means recognizing the given land in terms of shape or form; (4) the construction is, in other words, a subjective or inter-subjective interpretation by the perceivers; (5) knowledge develops along with the hermeneutic circles. Aims of geomorphology education according to this epistemology, may be (1) to have children not so much construct geomorphology knowledge as live the very construction, (2) to have children maintain an enduring interest in their surrounding landform, and (3) to have them appreciate the intimate connections between the landform of a region and the modes of living in that region. In short, aims of geomorphology education may have to be ontological, i.c., to have children engaged in the understanding as a process of living rather than for the resulting knowledge.

Socialist Pop After Cultural Revolution (문화혁명기 이후의 중국의 사회주의 팝아트)

  • This thesis examines contemporary Chinese painting after the Cultural Revolution(1966~76), focusing upon so-called "Chinese Pop art", which I termed as "Socialist Pop art". I considered the art of this period within the broader context of social changes especially after the Tienanmen incident of 1989. After the Cultural Revolution during which idolization of Chairman Mao was at its peak, one of the major changes in communist China was that an anti-Mao wave was generated in almost every social class. For example, novels that revealed the hardships during the Cultural Revolution were published. Posters that openly criticized the Maoism were also produced and displayed on the walls, and demand for democracy spurred widespread activist movements among young generations. These broad social changes were also reflected in art. A variety of art movements were introduced from the West to China, and after a period of experimentation with the new imported styles, artists began to apply the new artistic idiom to their works in order to visualize their own social and political realities they lived in. It was a shift from earlier Socialist Realism to a new expression either directly or indirectly, "Socialist Pop", an amalgam of Socialist Realism and Pop art tradition. After the 1989 crackdown of Tienanmen Square protest, when communist government quelled with brutal measures the students, workers, and ordinary people who rose for democracy, greater urge to protest the Deng Xiaoping regime emerged. This time coincided with the gradual emergence of art using Pop art vocabulary to satirize the social reality, the Socialist Pop art, along with many other art forms all with avant-garde spirit. One of the most frequent subjects of Chinese Pop art was visual images of Chairman Mao and his Cultural Revolution, and new China that was saturated with capitalism, which tainted the Chinese way of life with a Western way of consumerism and commercialism. The reason for the popularity of Mao's image was spurred by the "Mao Craze" in the early 1990's. People suddenly began to fall in a kind of nostalgia for the past, and once again, Mao Zedong was idolized as an entity who can heal the problems of modern China who had been marching towards their ultimate destination, the economic development. But this time Chairman Mao was no more an idol but just a popular, commercial product. He is no more an object of worship of almost religious nature but he has become an iconography symbolizing the complex nature of present Chinese society. During this process of depicting the social reality, Chinese artists are making the authority and sanctity of Maoism ineffective. Dealing with this new trend of contemporary Chinese art in view of "Socialist Pop art" two manners of re-creating Pop art can be illustrated: one that incorporates the propaganda posters of the Cultural Revolution; the other borrows from Chinese traditional popular imagery or mass media, such as photos taken during Mao era. What is worth mentioning is that these posters and photos of the Cultural Revolution can be identified as 'popular' media, as they were directed to educate the popular mass, thus combination of this ingenuous pop media with Western Pop art can be fully justified as a genre unique to China. Through this genre, we can discover a new chapter of the Chinese contemporary painting and its society, as their Pop art can be considered as self-portraits true to their present appearances.
