  • The anthropometric characteristics of the intended user population are most important parameters in the equipment and workplace layout design, particularly in the airplane cockpit design. Because human body is composed of multi-dimensional body segments, single 'average' or 'extreme' manikin is not sufficient in computer-aided design(CAD) environments. To overcome this limitation, we constructed a manikin group representing Korean Male pilot population. First, we identified 16 anthropometric variables which are important parameters in the evaluation of reach, visibility, and clearance. And we found their correlations and conducted a factor analysis. Four common factors were extracted in the factor analysis. The first one was related with length dimensions, the second was with the arm reach, the third was with the sitting height, and the last was with breadth-depth dimensions. Finally, 17 manikins were constructed and presented in the CAD prototype.

  • This study surveyed standardization activities of the International Standard Organization (ISO) Technical Committee 159 (TC 159) (ergonomics) in the year 2008. The subcommittee 1 (SC 1) dealing with general ergonomics principles produced one committee draft (CD). The subcommittee 3 (SC 3) dealing with anthropometry and biomechanics systematically reviewed two ISO standards issued in 2003 and 2004 respectively. The subcommittee 4 (SC 4) dealing with ergonomics of human system interaction issued 11 final draft international standards (FDIS), 3 draft international standards (DIS), 4 CDs, and 4 new work item proposals (NWIP). The SC 4 also systematically reviewed 10 international standards due on the year 2008. The subcommittee 5 (SC 5) dealing with ergonomics of the physical environment issued one FDIS, 3 CDs, and one NWIP. This paper summarized the major features of the FDIS approved by each subcommittee of TC 159 for publication in the year 2008.

  • Porper ergonomic design of a passenger seat for the highspeed train is one of the essential design components that is directly related to passenger comfort. This study investigated a systematic approach to ergonomic passenger seat design and evaluation for the Korean highspeed train. To design an ergonomic passenger seat that improves passenger comfort, seat dimensions, Korean anthropometry, passenger activities in the coach, body postures and body contours were considered. The interrelationship of these factors was analyzed and seat dimensions were suggested. To properly evaluate the dimensions suggested, four prototypes were made and iteratively evaluated as a feedback procedure. This approach is expected to be applicable to the passenger seat design of other transport vehicles as well as a train.

  • The objectives of this study were twofold; (1) to determine an optimal handle size of a signal billy, based on the subjective assessment of grip comfort and (2) to investigate the relationship between hand anthropometry and the optimal handle size. Thirty-seven university male students were asked to rate seven cylindrical handles of different diameters in barehanded and gloved conditions, respectively. Among these handles, 3.5cm diameter of the handle size was found to be the most comfortable, in both bardhanded and gloved conditionsl. However, no statistically significant reduction in grip comfort occurred within handle diameter ranging from 2.5cm to 4.0cm. As the handle diameter was deivated from the range, grip discomfort in creased significantly. A Spearman rank correlation coefficient test revealed that hand anthropometries such as finger lengths, hand circumference, and hand thickness were statistically significant factors on the determination of the optimal handle size. The implications of these findings were discussed. The results of this study can be used as guidelines in designing the hand tools for power grip.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the 45 measuring items for the clothing construction in order to observe the factorial structure of items and to extract the common factor and the special unique factor from data. The sample for the study was drawn randomly out of senior high schoolgirls in Seoul urban area. The size of sample was 301 girls between age 16 and 18. The method of analysis was applied by the principal component analysis with orthogonal rotation after extraction of 9 major factors. All of the above data was analyzed by the computer installed at Seoul National University. From these analyses, the major findings can be summerized as follows: 1. The results of factor analysis generally indicated that the first factor was clustered with 15 items, length measures and height measures. The eigenvalue of the first factor was 16.5 and the cumulative percentage of variables 36.6%. 2. The second factor was clustered with width measures, girth measures and weight of 19 items. The eigenvalue of the second factor was 6.5 and the cumulative percentage of variables 51.0%.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the point at issue unfitness and unclassification in figures for clothing construction. Comparing measurements of 3 sold figures and physical body by Suck·Go method and 19 items were selected. These items were acquired by factor analysis and cluster analysis an measurements of 200 women in twenties. The results were as follows; 1. Comparison between measurement of figures and physical body; There was not so much difference among figures, but significant difference between figures and physical body. 2. Comparison between measurement of surface area of figures and physical body; There was similar to each figure, but significant difference between figures and physical body. Mostly, figures were bigger than physical body in front parts but smaller in back parts. 3. There were 8 items selected by factor analysis; That is bust girth, waist girth, hip girth, neck base girth, posterior waist length, bust point length, chest breadth and armscye girth. 4. There were 7 clusters selected by cluster analysis.

  • This paper proposed the basic consideration for the reliable 3-D measurement and analysis of middle-aged women's breast using 3-D phase-shifting moire topography. The surface borderline of the breast based on the anatomical structure on the skin was suggested. Various breast dimensions that can be measured using 3-D measurement system and their measuring methods were discussed. Tips for the measurement of sagged breast were also proposed. It is expected that these basic considerations contribute to draw attention to the reliable measurement of women's breast and provide a kind of tools for the standardization of 3-D shape measurement of breast.

  • This study was performed to investigate the relationships between obese index and major risk factors of cardiovascular disease in CVD patients. Anthropometry, food intake patterns, blood pressure, serum lipids and hematological values were analyzed in 550 patients from June, 1991 to August, 1992. The results are as follows: Total food intakes, especially total vegetable food and alcohol intakes were significantly related with obese index, so that the heavier patients tended to consume more carbohydrate and less fat. The blood pressure were observed to have positive correlation with obese index in man but not in women. However, both in men and women, blood levels of TG, TC, and VLDL tended to be related to obese index positively, while HDL and HDL-C were shown to be oppositive. So, it seems that as the degree of obesity is higher the blood pressure and blood lipids patterns worse. Therefore, these results suggest that obesity is one of the major risk factors of CVD, and for prevention & treatment of the disease, controlling body weight by nutritionally adequate diet along with alcohol restriction is necessary.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the relationships among the levels of fasting serum insulin, free fatty acid, lipids and anthropometry in normal-weight female college students. Serum insulin and free fatty acid levels were negatively correlated. However, insulin, triglyceride, and cholesterol levels were not correlated with fat mass or BMI(body mass index). The ability of anthropometric and biochemical indicators to predict fatness could be important for epidemiologic and clinical research. In the subjects, waist cirumference was correlated with BMI, fat mass and percent body fat, and HDLC/CHOL (high density lipoprotein cholesterol/cholesterol)was correlated with body weight, BMI, and fat mass. Our data suggests than waist circumference and HDLC/CHOL are predictors of fatness, whereas WHR apears to be a less important contributor to fatness in female college students.
