Isolation of flavonoids from Rhus verniciflua STOKES

  • Rhus verniciflua STOKES (RVS) belongs to Anacardiaceae and grows Korea, China and Japan. distributed in the northeastern Asia. Rhus verniciflua STOKES has been used for anthelmintic medicine, stomachache, emmenagogue and constipation in oriental medicine. From the EtOAc fraction of 70% MeOH extracts, flavonoids were isolated by column chromatography using ODS, Sephadex LH-20 and silica gel. The structure of these compounds were identified on the $^1$H-NMR, $\^$13/C-NMR and FAB/MS spectroscopic methods.

성숙한 얼룩말에서 Ascarid Impaction 및 장천공 (A Case of Ascarid Impaction and Intestinal Perforation in an Adult Zebra (Equus burchelli bohmi))

  • Macrocyclic lactone에 저항이 있는 Parascaris equorum은 몇몇 국가에서 보고되었다. 그랜트얼룩말(Equus burchelli bohmi)이 만성체중감소 및 심한 침울로 인하여 제주경마공원동물병원에 내원하였다. 임상검사에서 빈맥 및 탈수가 밝혀졌고 다음날 심한 복통을 앓고 난 후 폐사하였다. 내원하기 전에 얼룩말은 3개월 간격으로 3회에 걸쳐 ivermectin을 경구로 투여 받았고 첫 침울증상 30일 전에도 ivermectin으로 투여 받았다. 부검에서 위와 소장에 회충축적 및 장천공을 확인하였다. 저자들의 지식으로는 성숙한 얼룩말에서 ascarid impaction 및 장천공 예가 매우 드물다. 본 증례의 원인은 P. equorum이 ivermectin에 저항성이 있을 수 도 있다고 의심하고 있다.

의미가 다양한 본초 효능 표현에 대한 고찰 - 본초의 殺蟲 효능을 중심으로 - (A Study on Ambiguous Expression for Efficacy of Medicinal Material - Focusing on 'Salchung[殺蟲]' -)

  • Objectives : Through this study, it would be confirmed that specific expression for efficacy of medicinal material has multiple meanings. And through the methodology to determine the multi meaning, it could be contributed to lighten ambiguous expressions for efficacy of medicinal material.Methods : The premise is that the efficacy and treatment target data are related to each other. Word cloud has been used analyzing the efficacy and treatment target data for medicinal materials. Then classic and modern documents were analyzed by the search.Results : Even though searching all related references as well as comparing the efficacy and treatment target data were done, some medicinal materials having 'Salchung[殺蟲]' as an efficacy are not expected to treat the disease associated with the parasite. Through the analysis of classic and modern documents, it was found that 'Salchung[殺蟲]' is not used only as a means of anthelmintic efficacy. But through the above analysis method some medicinal materials having 'Guchung[驅蟲]' as an efficacy are expected to treat the disease associated with the parasite, and 'Guchung[驅蟲]' seems to be almost used as a means of anthelmintic efficacy.Conclusions : If a certain expression for efficacy of medicinal material is used as a single meaning obviously, ambiguous expressions need to be clear. And if a certain expression for efficacy of medicinal material seems to have multiple meanings, the additional informations are to be supplemented for exact wording.

송어를 감염원으로한 광절열두조충 인체감염 (Two Human Cases of Diphyllobothrium latum Infection through Eating Raw Freshwater Trout, Salmo gairdneri)

  • 최근 한국에 있어서 광절열두조충 감염예가 가끔 보고되고 있다. 저자등은 1994년 10월 강원도 춘천시 거주 남녀 부부가 함께 담수산 송어회를 먹고 감염된 2예에 대하여 보고하는 바이다. 구충은 하제로서 Magnesium sulfate 15gm, 구충제 Praziquantel 15mg/kg를 투여하였다. 제1예는 인ㅇㅇ, 43세 남자, 69kg의 건강체였으며, 구충하여 얻은 충체의 길이 6.65m, 폭 8-13mm였다. 제2예는 최ㅇㅇ, 39세 여자, 56kg으로 소화불량, 복부 불쾌감을 호소하였고, 구충하여 얻은 충체는 5.50m, 폭 8-13mm이었다. 2예 모두에서 두부는 검출되지 않았다. 구충하여 얻은 충체의 외관상 형태, 자궁의 선회, 자궁분지(uterine loops)의 수, 생식공의 위치와 절단표본상 음경낭과 저정낭의 형태, 질의 위치, 자궁구의 위치등과 충란을 광학현미경으로 관찰 한 형태, 크기 및 SEM으로 관찰한 표피의 작은 점각(pits)의 유무, 분포 등 형태학적인 특징등으로 Diphyllobothrium latum으로 동정하였다. 이번의 인체 감염은 담수산 송어회가 원인이 된 것으로 믿어지는 예이다.

  • Silica sulfuric acid (SSA)를 이용하여 ethylenediamine (EDA)과 o-phenylenediamine (o-PDA)을 2-(4-methylthio benzenesulfonyl)-1,3-dimethyl/1-methyl-3-phenyl/1,3-diphenyl/1-methyl-3-ethoxypropane-1,3-dione 3a-d과의 헤테로고리화 반응을 통하여 좋은 생리활성을 나타내는 1H-1,4-diazepines 4a-d과 3H-1,5-benzodiazepines 5a-d을 좋은 수율로 합성하였다. 이 반응에서 ${\beta}$-diketones/${\beta}$-ketoesters 3a-d는 4-methylthiobenzenesulfonyl chloride 1과 다양한 ${\beta}$-diketones/${\beta}$-ketoesters 2a-d과의 축합반응으로 합성하였으며, 합성한 4a-d와 5a-d 화합물들에 대해서 fantimicrobial, antifungal 및 anthelmintic 활성을 측정하였다.

Electrophysiological Properties of Ion Channels in Ascaris suum Tissue Incorporated into Planar Lipid Bilayers

  • Ion channels are important targets of anthelmintic agents. In this study, we identified 3 types of ion channels in Ascaris suum tissue incorporated into planar lipid bilayers using an electrophysiological technique. The most frequent channel was a large-conductance cation channel (209 pS), which accounted for 64.5% of channels incorporated (n=60). Its open-state probability (Po) was ~0.3 in the voltage range of -60~+60 mV. A substate was observed at 55% of the main-state. The permeability ratio of Cl- to K+ (PCl/PK) was ~0.5 and PNa/PK was 0.81 in both states. Another type of cation channel was recorded in 7.5% of channels incorporated (n=7) and discriminated from the large-conductance cation channel by its smaller conductance (55.3 pS). Its Po was low at all voltages tested (~0.1). The third type was an anion channel recorded in 27.9% of channels incorporated (n=26). Its conductance was 39.0 pS and PCl/PK was 8.6±0.8. Po was ~1.0 at all tested potentials. In summary, we identified 2 types of cation and 1 type of anion channels in Ascaris suum. Gating of these channels did not much vary with voltage and their ionic selectivity is rather low. Their molecular nature, functions, and potentials as anthelmintic drug targets remain to be studied further.

Flubendazole의 회충, 편충 및 요충에 대한 구충효과 (Effect of Flubendazole against Ascayis Zumbyicoides, yyichocephalus tyichiuyus and Enteyobius vermicularis in Bnfeeted Children)

  • Effectiveness of aubendazole, a newly introduced as an anthelmintic in Korea, was evaluated in 28 ascariasis, 28 whipworm in(tractions and 17 Pinworm infections in Primary school children. All Patients were orally given by aubendazole of 500mg once. Stools for roundworm and whipworm and anal swabs for pinworm infections were examined both before and 25 days after treatment. After flubendazole treatment, all ascariasis and pinworm infected cases were cured. On the other hand, in whipworm infections, the cure rate was 82.1% (23 cured of 28 infected), and the egg reduction rate was 67.1%, respectively, Headache (one case), dizziness (2 cases) and abdominal pain (3 cases) were noticed as untoward effects, but they were mild and disappeared within 24 hours. These results demonstrate the excellent efEectiveness of aubendazole in treating these helminth infections.

  • The roots of Pseudarthria viscida (L.) Wight and Arnott. (Leguminosae) are used against various disorders in Indian systems of medicine, namely as anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory, cardiotonic, aphrodisiac, rejuvenating, tonic and as a remedy for cough, asthma, tuberculosis, diarrhoea and alternate fever. The present communication deals with the detailed pharmacognostical evaluation of the root sample using light and confocal microscopy, WHO recommended physico-chemical determinations and authentic phytochemical procedures. he physico-chemical, morphological and histological parameters presented in this paper may be proposed as parameters to establish the authenticity of P. viscida root and may possibly help to differentiate the drug from its other species.

Herbs and Botanicals as Feed Additives in Monogastric Animals

  • Animal feed additives are used worldwide for many different reasons. Some help to cover the needs of essential nutrients and others to increase growth performance, feed intake and therefore optimize feed utilization. The health status of animals with a high growth performance is a predominant argument in the choice of feed additives. The use of feed additives is more and more questioned by the consumers. Therefore, the feed industry is highly interested in valuable alternatives which could be accepted by the consumers. Probiotics, prebiotics, enzymes and highly available minerals as well as herbs can be seen as alternatives. Herbs, spices and their extracts (botanicals) have a wide range of activities. They can stimulate feed intake and endogenous secretions or have antimicrobial, coccidiostatic or anthelmintic activity. A major field of application of herbs is the protection of animals and their products against oxidation.

  • Bambusa arundinacea family Graminae, is one of the precious plant resources of the earth. It has played a significant role in human civilization since ancient times. It is tall sized tree growing throughout India, moist parts of India. It also occurs in Sri Lanka, Malaya, Peru and Myanmar. The different parts of this plant contain silica, cholin, betain, cynogenetic glycosides, albuminoids, oxalic acid, reducing sugar, resins, waxes, benzoic acid, arginine, cysteine, histidine, niacin, riboflavin, thiamine, protein, gluteline, contains lysine, methionine, betain, cholin, proteolytic enzyme, nuclease, urease. Various parts of this plant such as leaf, root, shoot and seed possess anti-inflammatory, antiulcer, anti-diabetic, anti-oxidant, anthelmintic, antifertility, antibacterial, insectisidal, antiarthritic, vessele protection etc. This review mainly focuses on the traditional, phytochemical and pharmacological information of Bambusa arundinacea.
