Friction materials for brake linings and clutches have severe performance requirements. The principal function of such frictional elements is to convert kinetic energy to heat, and then either to absorb or to dissipate heat. In order to achieve these objectives, the coefficient of friction must be as high as possible, independent of variations in operating conditions, and the necessary energy conversion must be accomplished with a minimum of wear on the contacting parts. In this study, Al powder, Al bronze powder and Mo powder used in general for automobile brake was sprayed on automobile brake disc to restrain rust and to maintain friction performance. Dynamo and corrosion tests have been carried out. It is concluded that the sprayed disc with Al bronze powder has the most improved frictional performance and anti-corrosive characteristics. The main results obtained can be summarized as follows; 1. From the corrosion current density test for gray cast iron and sprayed disc with powders of Al, Al bronze and Mo, it was cleared that the spray treatment with Al bronze powder showed the most superior anti-corrosive characteristics than other powders. 2. By anode polarization toward the noble direction from corrosion potential, corrosion current density with sprayed brake disc by Al-bronze powder was the lowest. 3. Mean frictional coefficients obtained from dynamo test are as follows : the sprayed disc with Al(99.99%) powder was 0.190 ; the sprayed disc with Al-bronze powder was 0.312 ; the sprayed disc with Mo powder was 0.257 ; the non-sprayed disc of gray cast iron was 0.331. In the case of the sprayed disc Al-bronze powder showed the most excellent frictional characteristics . 4. Amount of burnish quantity obtained from burnish test by dynamometer is as follows : the sprayed disc with Al-powder was 1.079 mm : the sprayed disc with Al-bronze powder was 0.155 mm : the sprayed disc with Mo powder was 0.253 mm : the non-sprayed disc of gray cast iron was 0.241 mm. Al-bronze powder also showed the most excellent burnish characteristics.
Electrode of solid oxide fuel cell must have sufficient porosity to allow gas transport to the interface with electrolyte effectively but high porosity has a negative impact on structural stability in electrode support. Thus, the upper limit of porosity is based on consideration of mechanical strength of electrode. In this study, the effect of microstructure of Ni-YSZ anode supported SOFC on the mechanical and electrical property was investigated. LSCF composite cathode and 8YSZ electrolyte were used. The porosity of the anode was modified by the amount of graphite powder and added graphite contents were 24, 18, 12 vol%, respectively. The higher the porosity, the better the electrical performance, $P_{max}$. While the flexural strength decreased with increasing the amount of graphite. But the rate of increase in electrical performance and the rate of decrease in mechanical strength were not directly proportional to amount of graphite. The optimum graphite content incorporating both electrical and mechanical performance was 18 vol%.
Unite cell of soid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) that consists of a dense yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ) electrolyte a porous nickel-YSZ cermet anode and a porous strontium- doped lanthanum manganate(LSM) cathod was fabricated from using pore former through co-firing technique. Initial sintering shrinkage rates of each layer were identified for fabricating SOFC. Heterogenous sintering was very effective in tailoring shrinkage rate for three layers. The powder tailoring necessary for shrinkage rate matching are as follows ; electrolyte of 60% TZ8YS/ 40% TZ8Y mixture anode of 51wt% NiO/49 wt% (70wt% TZ8YS/30 wt% UT ZrO2) mixture and cathode of 80% LSM/20% UT ZrO2 mixture . The overall sintering shrinkage rate differences of three layers using these compositions were maintained in a few percent.

Nano-sized Sn particles were coated with Ni-P layer using an electroless deposition method and their anodic performance was tested for lithium secondary batteries. Uniform coating layers were obtained, of which the thickness was controlled by varying the $Ni^{2+}$ concentration in the plating bath. It was found that the Ni-P layer plays two important roles in improving the anodic performance of Sn powder electrode. First, it prevents the inter-particle aggregation between Sn particles during the charge/discharge process. Second, it provides an electrical conduction pathway to the Sn particles, which allows an electrode fabrication without an addition of conductive carbon. A pseudo-optimized sample showed a good cyclability and high capacity ($>400mAh\;g^{-1}$) even without conductive carbon loading.
Silica/SUS composite membranes were prepared for CO removal from products of methanol steam reforming. A support was prepared by coating Ni powder of sub-micron and SiO$_2$ sols of particle size of 500nm and 150nm in turns on a porous stainless steel (SUS) substrate. Silica top layer was coated on the modified support using colloidal sol with nanoparticle. As a result of mixture gas permeation test of silica composite membrane using H$_2$(99%)/CO(1%), CO concentration of 10000 ppm was reduced to under 81 ppm, which is acceptable in PEMFC anode gas specification. Permeation mechanism through the membrane was mainly molecular sieving.
$Fe_3O_4$/Fe/graphene nanocomposite powder is synthesized by electrical wire explosion of Fe wire and dispersed graphene in deionized water at room temperature. The structural and electrochemical characteristics of the powder are characterized by the field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, field-emission transmission electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and galvanometric discharge-charge method. For comparison, $Fe_3O_4$/Fe nanocomposites are fabricated under the same conditions. The $Fe_3O_4$/Fe nanocomposite particles, around 15-30 nm in size, are highly encapsulated in a graphene matrix. The $Fe_3O_4$/Fe/graphene nanocomposite powder exhibits a high initial charge specific capacity of 878 mA/g and a high capacity retention of 91% (798 mA/g) after 50 cycles. The good electrochemical performance of the $Fe_3O_4$/Fe/graphene nanocomposite powder is clearly established by comparison of the results with those obtained for $Fe_3O_4$/Fe nanocomposite powder and is attributed to alleviation of volume change, good distribution of electrode active materials, and improved electrical conductivity upon the addition of graphene.
In this research, anode for SOFC has been manufactured from two different kinds of feedstock materials through thermal spraying process and the properties of the coatings were characterized and compared. One kind of feedstock was manufactured from spray drying method which includes nano-components of NiO, YSZ (300 nm) and graphite. And the other is manufactured by blending the micron size NiO coated graphite, YSZ and graphite powders as feedstock materials. Microstructure, mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of the coatings as-sprayed, after oxidation and after hydrogen reduction containing nano composite which is prepared from spray-dried powders were evaluated and compared with the same properties of the coatings prepared from blended powder feedstock. The coatings prepared from the spray dried powders has better properties as they provide larger triple phase boundaries for hydrogen oxidation reaction and is expected to have lower polarization loss for SOFC anode applications than that of the coatings prepared from blended feedstock. A maximum electrical conductivity of 651 S/cm at $800^{\circ}C$ was achieved for the coatings from spray dried powders which much more than that of the average value.
An applicability microencapsulation, using electroless copper plating, of hydrogen storage alloy powder as an anode material for nickel-hydrogen secondary batteries was investigated. Alloys employed were $LaNi_{4.7}Al_{0.3}$ and $MmNi_{4.5}Al_{0.5}$(Mm=mischmetal) which have an appropriate equilibrium pressure and capacity. The microencapsulation of the alloy powder was found to accelerate initial activation of electrodes and to increase capacity which is about 285mAh/g for $LaNi_{4.7}Al_{0.3}$. In addition, other charge and discharge characteristics, such as polarization and flatness of charge and discharge potential, were improved due to the role of copper layer as a microcurrent collector and an oxidation barrier of the alloy powder. $MmNi_{4.5}Al_{0.5}$ alloy showed lower capacity than $LaNi_{4.7}Al_{0.3}$ because of higher equilibrium pressure. Cyclic characteristics of both alloys were somewhat poor because of mainly shedding and partial oxidation of alloy powder during the cycling. However, it was considered that the microencapsulation method is effective to improve the performances of the hydrogen storage alloy electrodes.
