  • Small bowel injury resulting from unforeseen penetration of the anterior annulus fibrosus and longitudinal ligament is a rare complication of lumbar microdiscectomy. The patient complained of abdominal tenderness and distention immediately after microdiscectomy for L4-5 and L5-S1 disc herniation. Using abdominal computed tomography, we found several foci of air overlying the anterior aspect of the vertebral body at the L5-S1 level. Segmental resection of the small bowel including small tears and primary anastomosis of the jejunum were performed. Here, we present a case of intestinal perforation after lumbar microdiscectomy and discuss technical methods to prevent this complication with a review of literature.

  • Analytical solutions for the forced convection heat transfer of viscoelastic fluids obeying the Giesekus model are obtained in a concentric annulus under laminar flow for both thermal and hydrodynamic fully developed conditions. Boundary conditions are assumed to be (a) constant fluxes at the walls and (b) constant temperature at the walls. Temperature profiles and Nusselt numbers are derived from dimensionless energy equation. Subsequently, effects of elasticity, mobility parameter and viscous dissipation are discussed. Results show that by increasing elasticity, Nusselt number increases. However, this trend is reversed for constant wall temperature when viscous dissipation is weak. By increasing viscous dissipation, the Nusselt number decreases for the constant flux and increases for the constant wall temperature. For the wall cooling case, when the viscous dissipation exceeds a critical value, the generated heat overcomes the heat which is removed at the walls, and fluid heats up longitudinally.

  • The paper presents the heat transfer characteristics during cooling process of carbon dioxide($CO_2$) in a helically coiled tube. The main components of the apparatus consist of a receiver, a variable speed pump, a mass flowmeter, a pre-heater, a gas cooler(test section) and an isothermal tank. The test section with the inner diameter 4.55 [mm] is a tube in tube type heat exchanger with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and water flowing in the annulus. The main results were summarized as follows : The heat transfer coefficient increases with respect to the decrease of the gas cooler pressure in a supercritical region and the increase of the refrigerant mass flux. The pressure drop decreases in increases of the gas cooler pressure and increases with respect to increases the refrigerant mass flux.

  • LAVA-ERVC experiments have been performed to investigate the effect of insulation design features on the coolability in case of the external reactor vessel cooling (ERVC). All the 4 tests have been performed using Alumina iron thermite melt as a corium simulant. Due to the limited steam venting through the insulation, steam binding occurred inside the annulus in the KSNP case simulation. On the contrary, in the tests which were performed for simulating the APR1400 insulation design, sufficient water ingression and steam venting through the insulation lead to effective cool down of the vessel characterized by nucleate boiling. It could be found from the experimental results that modification of the insulation design allowing sufficient ventilation could increase the positive effects of the external reactor vessel cooling.

  • The dispersion of an aerosol bolus in acinus is analyzed numerically. Model geometry is a straight duct surrounded by an axisymmetric semicircular annulus which is expanding or contracting with breathing. Unsteady Wavier-Stokes equation is solved by CFX-F3D, an FVM commercial code and the trajectory of massless particle Is computed by Lagrangian method. For steady flow with no wall motion, mean velocity of aerosol bolus in alveolated duct is a little smaller than that in straight duct and dispersion in alveolated duct is comparable with the dispersion in straight tube. For expanding duct mean velocity of aerosol bolus approaches half of that in straight tube and effective diffusivity is smaller than that of straight tube. For contracting duct mean velocity of aerosol bolus becomes slightly larger than that in straight tube and effective diffusivity is comparable with the case of straight tube.

  • Effects of subcooling on pool boiling heat transfer in vertical annuli with closed bottoms have been investigated experimentally. For the test, a tube of 19.1mm diameter and the water at atmospheric pressure have been used. Three annular gaps of 7.05, 18.15, and 28.20 have been tested in the subcooled water and results of the annuli are compared with the data of a single unrestricted tube. The increase in pool subcooling results in much change in heat transfer coefficients. At highly subcooled regions, heat transfer coefficients for the annuli are much larger than those of a single tube. As the heat flux increases and subcooling decrease, a deterioration of heat transfer coefficients is observed at the annulus of 7.05mm gap. Single-phase natural convection and liquid agitation are the governing mechanisms for the single tube while liquid agitation and bubble coalescence are the major factors at the bottom closed annuli.

  • The objective of present study is to analyze a concentric triple-passage heat exchanger for an optimal design of a continuous hot steel-tube cooling system, where a hot-steel tube line is passing through an antioxidant gas with a constant speed. Velocities and temperatures of the inert gas flowing between inner and outer tubes are calculated theoretically for laminar and numerically for turbulent flow regimes. From their profiles Nusselt numbers and friction factors are calculated (or various ratios of inner/outer tube radii and relative velocities. With these Nusselt numbers triple-passage heat exchangers are investigated for their thermal characteristics. It is shown that heat transfer coefficients based on ratios of average heat fluxes from inner and outer tubes might result in great errors for the temperature distributions of the flows, since local heat transfer coefficients for flows through an annulus are dependent on local wall heat flux ratios.

  • The present study has been conducted to predict the temperature distribution in the core of the scraper type ice generator. The analytic model was simplified as the flow in the annular type cylinder, which had an inside wall moving in axial direction due to the rotation of screw and a fixed outside wall. The governing equations were arranged by the method of separation of variables. The results corresponded to the exact solutions of the Bessel function. The qualitative results such as general characteristics of heat transfer in annulus flow from outer cylinder wall to the inside wall were obtained. However the amount of the heat transfer was underestimated as low as $1/5{\sim}1/6$ of the designed value.

  • The KNGR has an advanced ECCS design feature which employs four mechanically-separated SI trains where each train consisting of one HPSI pump and one SIT injects ECC water directly into the reactor vessel downcomer annulus. To demonstrate that the KNGR ECCS design features meet the EPRI ALWR requirements of no core uncovery for a break of up to 6 inch diameter, small break LOCA cases with various break sizes were analyzed using a best-estimate analytical procedure. Two kinds of break locations are considered: cold leg and DVI line breaks. It was observed that the KNGR ECC design can tolerate a cold leg break of up to 10 inches with no core uncovery. However. since DVI line break with 6 inch diameter undergoes slight core uncovery. further investigation is required for KNGR SIS optimization.
