This study investigates the seasonal variation and spatial distribution characteristics of pollutant load, as executing the quality valuation of pollutant load inflowing into Yeong-il Bay from on-land including the Hyeong-san River. Annual total pollutant generating rate from Yeong-il Bay region are 202ton-BOD/day, 620ton-SS/day, 42ton-TN/day, and 16ton-TP/day, respectively. Particularly, the generating ration of the pollutant loads from the Hyeong-san River is greater than that of any other watershed of the Yeong-il Bay, of which BOd is about 78.2%, SS 88.5%, T-N 62.5%, T-P 73.1%, As calculating Tank model with input value of daily precipitation and evaporation of 2001 year in drainage basin of the Hyeong-san River, the estimated result of the annual river discharge effluence from this river is 830106㎥, As a result to estimating annual effluence rate outflowing at the rivers from each drainage basin. annual inflow pollutant rates are 10,633ton-BOD/year, 19,302ton-SS/year, 15,369ton-TN/year, 305ton-TP/year, respectively. The population congestion region of the Pohang-city is a greater source of pollutant loads than the Neang-Chun region with wide drainage area. Therefore, the quantity of TN inflowing into Yeong-il Bay is much more than T-P. The accumulation of pollutant load effluenced from on-land will happen at the inner coast region of Yeon-il Bay. Finally, We would make a prediction that the water quality will take a bad turn.
The annual variation of mesozooplankton community in the Jangmok harbor of Jinhae Bay was studied in relation to environmental variables. Sampling was carried out weekly from January to December 2009. During the study periods, mesozooplankton community consisted of 44 taxa and the annual mean abundance was 8308 inds. $m^{-3}$. The maximum abundance was observed to be 50043 inds. $m^{-3}$ in August and the minimum in April with 1013 inds. $m^{-3}$. Of these, Penilia avirostris, cirripedia larvae, Evadne tergestina, Acartia omorii, Oikopleura s, Paracalanus parvus s. l., Eurytemora pacifica, Podon s, Oithona s, and Acartia steueri were observed as dominant species in Jangmok bay and they also contributed to 79% of total mesozooplankton. According to non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) and cluster analysis based on the mesozooplankton community data from each season, the community was divided into three groups. The first group included appearence species in winter and spring season, which is mainly dominated the copepod such as A. omorii and E. pacifica. The second and third group was composed with observed species in summer and autumn, respectively. Based on the SIMPER (similarity percentages), P. avirostris in summer and cirripedia larvae in autumn were significantly dominated. Our results indicate that although the mesozooplankton abundances in Jangmok harbor fluctuated abruptly, its annual variation was strongly influenced by water temperature.
Seasonal variations of heat content in the neighbouring seas of Korea are estimated from the bimonthly normals of seawater temperature in the upper 300m for 15 years (1961~1975) at 192 stations. The heat is seasonally stored mainly in the upper 100m layer in the East Sea and in the whole water column in the West and South Seas of Korea. The annual range of heat content changes in the West Sea is almost the same as that in the East Sea. The annual phase of heat content variation lags behind that of sea surface temperature variation by one to three months. Due to the seasonal advections of heat by currents and winds, the annual amplitude of heat storage rate in the neighbouring seas of Korea is much larger than that of incoming radiation.
We studied the annual variation of water temperatures in the upper 200m off southeast coast of Korea by means of harmonic analysis of the temperatures at 10 standard depths of 51 stations. The distributions of the mean temperature in coastal zone are almost parallel to the coast, whereas those in offshore are almost zonal. With an increase of depth, the annual amplitude decreases nearly exponentially and the annual phase increases nearly linearly. The average e-folding depth for the annual amplitudes is 65m, vertical change of the annual phase is 180 per 200m, and the vertical eddy conductivity is $4\textrm{cm}^2/sec$. Annual variations of temperatures in the coastal zone of a few tens miles from the coast are considerably different from those in offshore area. The e-folding depths in coastal zone are shallower than those in offshore region, and the changes of phase with depths in coastal zone are smaller than those in offshore region.
Daily and seasonal variations of the ambient gamma ray exposure rates were measured by using a pressurized ion chamber from January 2003 to December 2005 in the CheongJu Regional Radiation Monitoring Post and the patterns of the distributions were studied. The annual average of the daily variation of the exposure rate was $\sim0.17{\mu}R/h$. The exposure rate was found to be maximum during 8:00 am to 9:00 am and minimum during 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm. For the annual data, the exposure rate was the minimum during the month of February. The exposure rate increased from February to mid-October (except during the period from May to July with no change) and decreased from October to February. The seasonal variation was found to be about $1{\mu}R/h$. Most of the measured values (96%) of the exposure rates fell under the normal distribution with a deviation of less than 4.8% and the remaining 4% had large fluctuations caused mainly by the rainfalls.
Interstational and interseasonal analyses of the correlation and variability in the seasonal and annual precipitation for 10 basic synoptic stations in South Korea, on the basis of rainfall record of over 40 years, are carried out. It is found that the climatic regions of precipitation could be classified by means of the interstational analysis for the correlations. Corrleation coefficients in interstational relationship of precipitation are lowest in autumn which characterizeds a strong locality while the highest value shows a relatively weak locality in winter. Interseasonal relationship between summer and winter precipitation shows mostly 10 percent significant level with all positive values. The magnitude of the variation coefficients are appeared to be in the order of winter, autumn, spring and summer. It is shown that the highest which is winter ranges between 0.33 0.58, and for the lowest summer, 0.26-0.44, respectively in the areal distribution of the coefficient. The secular changes of the variation coefficient in the recent trend show increases in spring at two station; Seoul and Incheon, in summer at Busan and in autumn at two stations; Busan and Incheon while in winter show devreases at the whole stations. An annual variation seems to show generally a constant trend as whole for all the stations.
European maple is famous for the optimum solid wood for making bridge which is the most important part in violin acoustics. This study was carried out to investigate the variation of main features, i. e. annual ring width and cutting direction of costly imported violin bridge blanks and to examine the effect of these features of the blanks on the vibrational characteristics of bridge blanks. Imported violin bridge blanks had somewhat large variation in major macroscopical and physical properties and there was little relationship between annual ring density and weight of maple blanks. Resonant frequency of violin bridge blanks had some positive correlation with weight, however, damping having negative relationship with frequency was seldom affected by any physical properties of the maple blanks. Deviation from the radial cutting of tail side(ray direction from top toward feet on the edge of bridge blank) lowered the resonant frequency. Consequently, weight and ray direction should be taken for the critical quality decisive factors(QDF) of incoming bridge blanks by not only inspectors also luthiers who tune the bridge by shaping and are responsible for the final timbre quality of this complicate instrument.
This study analyzes time variability of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), the leaf area index (LAI) and surface temperature (Ts) estimated from AVHRR data collected from across the Korean peninsula from 1981 to 1994. In the present study, LAI defined as vegetation density, as a function of NDVI applied for the vegetation types and Ts defined by the split-window formulation of Becker and Li (1990) with emissivity of a function of NDVI, are used. Results of the inter-annual, intra-annual and intra-seasonal variabilities in Korea show: (1) Inter-annual variability of NDVI is generally larger in the southem and eastern parts of the peninsula than in the western part. This large variability results from the significant mean variation. (2) Inter-annual variability of Ts is larger in the areas of smaller NDVI. This result shows that the NDVI play a small role in emissivity. (3) Inter-annual variability of LAI is larger in the regions of higher elevation and urban areas. Changes in LAI are unlikely to be associated with NDVI changes. (4) Changes in NDVI and Ts are likely dominant in July and are relatively small in spring and fall. (5) Urban effect would be obvious on the time-varying properties of NDVI and Ts in Seoul and the northern part of Taejon, where NDVI decreases and Ts increases with a significant magnitude.

Net production, dead material increments were measured, and annual respiration loss was simulated through a year to determine the gross production at the Phragmites longivalvis, Carex scabrifolia and Zoysia sinica stand on Okryudeung, a sand bar of the Nagdong river estuary. The maximum live biomass for above-ground organs of the three stands occured in October, i.e., 1, 985, 744 and 1, 013g/m2, and belowground net productions were estimated to be 650, 440 and 412g/m2, respectively. Materials died or shedding from live aboveground organs during the growth season were estimated to be 167, 81 and 0 g/$m^2$. From the results of simulation, annual variation of respiratiion was primarily dependent on the annual variation of temperature through a year. For annual respiration loss in three stands, 21.893, 6.147 and 5.036kg $CO_2/m^2$ were calculated, respectively. Corresponding gross productions were 72, 203, 22, 109 and 19, 909kcal/$m^2$. Respiration of belowground organs corresponded to 65%, 66% and 37% of the total plant respiration, and annual respiration loss accounted for 85%, 78% and 71% of the annual gross production. In view of efficiency of solar energy utilization, 5.8%, 1.8% and 1.6% of incident light energy were converted to gross production of plants during a year. With incident light energy during the growth season from April to September, energy utilizations for net production were estimated to be 1.2%, 0.4% and 0.6% at the three stands.
Some climatological features of summer precipitation in Korea were studyed using the precipitation data of 15 stations of Korea Meteorological Administration where more than 30 years data since 1961 are available. The study included statistical analysis of precipitation by climatological normal values, and comparison of inter-annual variation of annual precipitation, summer precipitation and precipitation during the Changma. The relationships between them were also analyzed. It was revealed that, in Korea, more than half of annual precipitation was concentrated in summer season (June to August), and it was usually influenced by the Changma. The ratio of summer and Changma precipitation to the annual precipitation showed that effect of Changma was bigger in the central inland area, while comparatively smaller in the east coastal area and Cheju Island due to topographical effects. It was also shown that the fluctuation of the annual precipitation was less variable than those of summer and Changma precipitations. Thus, it was suggested that understanding the variation features of summer precipitation associated with monsoon activities was very important to figure out the change of annual precipitation for the national water resources planning.
