Melt-spun $Nd_{14}Fe_{76}Co_4B_6$ and $Nd_{10.5}Fe_{79}Co_2Zr_{1.5}B_7$ ribbons were prepared under an externally applied magnetic field. Magnetic properties in terms of anisotropy were evaluated by discussing the effect of textured structure of the ribbon samples as well as its powders. About 32 % increase in $(B{\cdot}H)_{max}$ and 18.8 % increase in $B_r$ were observed along the perpendicular direction of the ribbon plane which is more prominent for the Nd-Fe-Co-Zr-B than for the Nd-Fe-Co-B alloy. The enhancement of magnetic anisotropy was monitored by measuring the anisotropy constant of each alloy as a function of quenching rate of the ribbon. It was found that for the melt-spun ribbon quenched at slow rate(less than 7 m/s) the magnetic field effect was overwhelmed by the heat gradient effect through the ribbon thickness while the field effect was prominent at intermediate quenching rate (more than 7~11 m/s). The reproducible maximum energy product, $(B{\cdot}H)_{max}$=16.4 MGOe can be obtained from the Nd-Fe-Co-Zr-B alloy.
Shear wave velocity of uncemented soil can be expressed as the function of effective stresses when capillary phenomena are negligible. However, the terms of effective stresses are divided into the direction of wave propagation and polarization because stress states are generally anisotropy. The shear wave velocities are affected by ${\alpha}$ parameters and ${\beta}$ exponents that are experimentally determined. The ${\beta}$ exponents are controlled by contact effects of particulate materials (sizes, shapes, and structures of particles) and the ${\alpha}$ parameters are changed by contact behaviors among particles, material properties of particles, and type of packing (i.e., void ratio and coordination number). In this study, consolidation tests are performed by using clay, mica and sand specimens. Shear wave velocities are measured during consolidation tests to investigate the stress-induced and inherent anisotropies by using bender elements. Results show the shear wave velocity depends on the stress-induced anisotropy for round particles. Furthermore, the shear wave velocity is dependent on particle alignment under the constant evvective stress. This study suggests that the shear wave velocity and the shear modulus should be carefully estimated and used for the design and construction of geotechnical structures.
Clay suspensions in liquid polymers exhibit a time-dependent behaviour that includes viscoelastic as well as thixotropic features. Because of the presence of interacting clay platelets, particulate networks can develop, which are broken down during flow and rebuild upon cessation of the flow. Here, the use of thixotropic techniques in probing flow-induced structures in nanocomposites is explored with data on a hectorite-poly(isobutylene) model system. By means of fast stress jump measurements the hydrodynamic contributions to the steady state stresses are determined as well as those caused by the stretching of the clay floes. Flow reversal measurements do not provide a clear indication of flow-induced anisotropy in the present case. The recovery of the clay microstructure upon cessation of flow is followed by means of overshoot and dynamic measurements. The development of a particulate network is detected by the appearance and growth of a low frequency plateau of the storage moduli. The modulus-frequency curves after various rest times collapse onto universal master curves, regardless of the pre-shear history or temperature. The scaling factors for this master curve are the crossover parameters. The crossover moduli are nearly a linear function of the crossover frequency, the relation being identical for recovery after shearing at different shear rates. This function depends, however, on temperature.
This study suggests three spatial distribution functions of strength parameters, which can be adopted in the derivation of failure conditions for transversely isotropic rocks. All three proposed functions, which are the oblate spheroidal function, the exponential function, and the function based on the directional projection of the strength parameter tensor, consist of two model parameters. With assumption that the cohesion and friction angle can be described by the proposed distribution functions, the transversely isotropic Mohr-Coulomb criterion is formulated and used as a failure condition in the simulation of the conventional triaxial tests. The simulation results confirm that the failure criteria incorporating the proposed distribution functions could reproduce the general trend in the variations of the axial stress at failure and the directions of failure planes with varying inclination of the weankness planes and confining pressure. Among three distribution functions, the function based on the directional projection of the strength parameter tensor yields the highest axial strength, while the axial strength estimated by the oblate spheroidal distribution function is the lowest.

Diffusion tensor tractorgraphy which is based on line propagation method with brute force approach is implemented and the vector correlation function is proposed in addition to the conventional fractional anisotrophy value as a criterion to select seed points. For the whole tractography, the proposed method used 41 % less seed points than the conventional brute force approach for $FA{\geq}0.3$ and most of the fiber tracks in the outer region of white matter were removed. For the corticospinal tract passing through region of interest, the proposed method has produced similar results with 50% less seed points than conventional one.
Laboratory investigations of physical (density and porosity), acoustic (velocity and velocity anisotropy), and electrical (resistivity and resistivity anisotropy) properties in deep-sea carbonate sequences at DSDPsites 288 and 289 in the western equatorial Pacific were made and correlated as a function of diagenesis. Profile of resistivity shows almost a mirror image of velocity indicating that electrical resistivity can be a useful variable to determine the diagenetic stage. Some fluctuations in acoustic and electrical properties near the zones of cherty and siliceous limestones for both sites imply significant changes in pore geometry due to interbedded silica. The significantly reduced pore throat size by the presence of silica which provides excess calcium carbonate to adjacent pore spaces is partly responsible for several jumps in acoustic and electrical properties of the zones. These observed geophysical data are interpreted as the result of silica diagenesis influencing carbonate diagenesis.

We have studied electro-optic characteristics as a function of splay elastic constants ($K_{11}$) in the fringe-field switching (FFS) mode using the LC with positive dielectric anisotropy. When $K_{11}$ is increased from 7.7pN to 11.7pN, a maximum transmittance is slightly increased and rising time become a little bit fast. However, operating voltage and threshold voltage is independent. In opposition to rising time, decay time is not affected by $K_{11}$. We already know that $K_{11}$ affects tilt angle of liquid crystals. Therefore, on the occasion of high $K_{11}$, liquid crystals are mainly affected by twist deformation because the higher $K_{11}$, the less tilt angle. In the FFS device, high $K_{11}$ is favorable to reduce tilt angle in on state and thus improve rising response time.

With the increasing demand for lightweight materials to reduce fuel consumption, especially in the transportation industry, magnesium alloys are being widely studied. However, there are several limitations to the large-scale application of magnesium alloys in a structure because of their low formability and strong anisotropy. In order to take into account both the strong anisotropy and tension-compression asymmetry of AZ31 sheet alloy, the Cazacu-Plunkett-Barlat yield criterion (Cazacu, 2006) was adopted in material modeling. The variation of the anisotropic coefficients that describe the yield surface evolution of AZ31 is optimized using an interpolation function based on specific calibration results. It generates continuous yield surfaces, which makes it possible to describe different hardening rates in tension and compression as well as the tension-compression asymmetry of magnesium alloys. The performance of the CPB06 yield criterion for simulating an axial crushing test was tested and compared with that of the Hill (1948) yield criterion.

A new optimal scheme based on curvelet transform is proposed for retinal image enhancement (RIE) using real-coded quantum genetic algorithm. Curvelet transform has better performance in representing edges than classical wavelet transform for its anisotropy and directional decomposition capabilities. For more precise reconstruction and better visualization, curvelet coefficients in corresponding subbands are modified by using a nonlinear enhancement mapping function. An automatic method is presented for selecting optimal parameter settings of the nonlinear mapping function via quantum genetic search strategy. The performance measures used in this paper provide some quantitative comparison among different RIE methods. The proposed method is tested on the DRIVE and STARE retinal databases and compared with some popular image enhancement methods. The experimental results demonstrate that proposed method can provide superior enhanced retinal image in terms of several image quantitative evaluation indexes.

Conventionally, profile non-uniformity has been characterized by relying on approximated profile with angle or anisotropy. In this study, a new non-uniformity model for etch profile is presented by applying a discrete wavelet to the image obtained from a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Prediction models for wavelet-transformed data are then constructed using a back-propagation neural network. The proposed method was applied to the data collected from the etching of tungsten material. Additionally, 7 experiments were conducted to obtain test data. Model performance was evaluated in terms of the average prediction accuracy (APA) and the best prediction accuracy (BPA). To take into account randomness in initial weights, two hundred models were generated for a given set of training factors. Behaviors of the APA and BPA were investigated as a function of training factors, including training tolerance, hidden neuron, initial weight distribution, and two slopes for bipolar sig-moid and linear function. For all variations in training factors, the APA was not consistent with the BPA. The prediction accuracy was optimized using three approaches, the best model based approach, the average model based approach and the combined model based approach. Despite the largest APA of the first approach, its BPA was smallest compared to the other two approaches.
