  • The motion of animals and gymnasts in the air as well as free flying space robots without thrusters are subjected to nonholonomic constraints generated by the law of conservation of angular momentum. The purpose of this paper is to derive analytical posture control laws for free flying objects in the air. We propose the bang-bang control method for trajectory planning of a 3 link mechanical system with initial angular momentum. This technique is used to reduce the DOF (degrees of freedom) at first switching phase and to determine the control inputs to steer the reduced order system to the desired position. Computer simulations for motion planning of an athlete approximated by 3 link, namely platform diving, are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

  • Numerical analysis and its inverse design process of 2nd stage of JT8D aircraft engine is described. One of the most important factors that affect the performante of turbomachine is secondary flow in the blade passage, so that the performance of turbomachine can be improved by controlling secondary flow. In this paper, as a method to control secondary flow, commercial inverse design program, TurboDesign is used. Meridional derivative of angular momentum is selected as a parameter to control blade leading in this program, To validate inverse designed model, computational analysis is applied which includes rotor-stator-interaction. In this paper, CFB results of both original and inverse designed model are compared to examine how much the performance improves without reduction of work output.

  • In this paper, reorientation based on angular momentum exchange is applied for a bias momentum stabilized satellite, which is equipped with a spherical fuel tank, and the effect of liquid slosh on the attitude properties such as inertia tensor and angular rate is investigated. In order to represent the slosh motion of liquid an equivalent mechanical model is adopted and full nonlinear equations of motion for three-body system are derived. Computer simulations are performed for several cases, which use the viscosity of liquid and the center location of the tank as input parameters, mainly in order to observe how the viscosity of liquid and the center location of the tank influence the spacecraft’s attitude. The investigation includes observing time-variations of the inertia tensor, especially presence of components of product of inertia during the maneuver.

  • We introduce a pattern generation method for a hopping one-legged robot and verify it experimentally. The pattern is derived from the liner and angular momentum of a COM (Center of Mass), which are pre-scheduled. Because of the relation between angular velocities of joints and momemtums of the COM, joint angle trajectories are easily obtained. In addition, the landing impact force is reduced by only adjusting the landing timing. In the experiment, the one-legged robot hops in place with 0.06 s of flying time, and makes continuous hopping. Based on our experimental results, the proposed method can be applied to hopping and running of biped humanoid robots.

  • To understand the effect of the initial rotation for tidally bounded clusters with mass spectrum, we performed N-body simulations for the clusters with different degrees of initial rotation and compared to Fokker-Planck results. We confirmed that the cluster evolution is accelerated by the initial rotation as well as the mass spectrum. For the slowly rotating models, the time evolution of mass, energy and angular momentum show good agreements between N-body and Fokker-Planck calculations. On the other hand, for the rapidly rotating models, there are significant differences between two approaches at the beginning of the evolution. By investigating cluster shapes, we concluded that these differences are mainly due to secular instability that takes place for very rapidly rotating clusters. The shape of cluster for N-body simulations becomes tri-axial or even prolate, while the 2-dimensional Fokker-Planck simulation can treat only oblate type axisymmetric systems. We also founded that there is the angular momentum exchange from high mass to low mass.

  • Gravitational waves from the pulsar glitch can be detected by next generation gravitational wave observatories. We investigate characteristics of the modes that can emit the gravitational waves excited by three different types of perturbations satisfying conservation of total rest mass and angular momentum. These perturbations mimic the pulsar glitch theories i.e., change of moment of inertia due to the star quakes or angular momentum transfer by vortex unpinning at crust-core interface. We carry out numerical hydrodynamic simulations using the pseudo-Newtonian method which makes weak field approximation for the dynamics, but taking all forms of energies into account to compute the Newtonian potential. Unlike other works, we found that the first and second strongest modes that give gravitational waves are $^2p_1$ and $H_1$ rather than$^2f$. We also found that vortex unpinning model excites the inertial mode in quadrupole moment quite effectively. The inertial mode may evolve into the non-axisymmetric r-mode.

  • A general expression using the nonmultipole expansion method is derived for the NMR shift arising from 3d electron angular momentum and the 3d electron spin dipolar-nuclear spin angular momentum interactions for a 3$d^2$ system in a strong crystal field environment of octahedral symmetry when the threefold axis is chosen as the quantization axis. The NMR shift is separated to the contribution of constant, $1/R^5\;and\;1/R^7$ terms and compared with the multipolar terms. We find that $1/R^5$ term contributes dominantly to the NMR shift but the contribution of $1/R^7$ term may not be negligible. It is also found that the exact values of the NMR shift are in agreement with the multipolar results for distances larger than 0.35 nm.

  • To study the NMR chemical shift arising from the 5f-electron orbital angular momentum and the 5f-electron spin dipolar-nuclear spin angular momentum interactions, the evaluation of the hyperfine integrals has been extended to any pairs of SCF type 5f orbitals adopting a general method which is applicable to a general vector R, pointing in any direction in space. From the electronic wavefunctions for 5f orbitals expressed in common coordinate system, the radial part of the hyperfine interaction integrals are derived by translating the exponential part, r2 exp(-2βr), in terms of R, rN and the modified Bessel functions. The radial integals for 5f orbitals are tabulated in analytical forms. When two of the hyperfine integrals along the (100), (010), (001), (110), and (111) axes are calculated using the derived radial integrals, the calculated values for the 5f system change sign for R-values larger than R 0.35 nm. But the calculated values for the 4f systems change sign for R-values larger than R 0.20 nm.

  • A general expression adopting a nonmultipole expansion method is derived for pseudocontact contribution to the NMR chemical shift arising from the electron orbital angular momentum and electron spin dipolar-nuclear spin angular momentum interaction of $3d^9$ system in a strong crystal field of tetragonally distorted tetrahedral symmetry. From this expression all the multipolar term are determined and the exact solution of ${\Delta}$B/B(ppm) is compared with the multipolar term. The $1/R^5$ term in the multipolar terms contributes dominantly to the NMR chemical shift but the other terms are certainly significant except that of the <111> axis. In addition, an analysis of the temperature dependence of the NMR chemical shift further illustrates that considerable care must be taken in interpeting NMR results in paramagnetic system.
