  • An optimization-based real-time joint angle extraction method of human elbow is proposed by processing the biomedical signal of surface EMG (electromyogram) measured at the center point of biceps brachii. The EMG signal is known as non-stationary (time-varying) signal, but we assume that it is quasi-stationary because a physical or physiological system has limitations in the rate at which it can change its characteristics. Based on the assumption, a pre-processing method to obtain pre-angle values from raw EMG signal is firstly suggested, and then an optimization method to minimize the error between the pre-angle and real joint angle is proposed in this paper. Finally, we suggest the experimental results showing the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • Due to the various engagement situations, it is very difficult to generate the optimal trajectory with several constraints. This paper investigates the sequential convex programming for the impact angle control with the additional constraint of altitude limit. Recently, the SOCP(Second-Order Cone Programming), which is one area of the convex optimization, is widely used to solve variable optimal problems because it is robust to initial values, and resolves problems quickly and reliably. The trajectory optimization problem is reconstructed as convex optimization problem using appropriate linearization and discretization. Finally, simulation results are compared with analytic result and nonlinear optimization result for verification.

  • In order to minimize unstable flow occurred at a multiblade fan/scroll system, optimal angle and shape of cut-off was determined by using two-dimensional turbulent fluid field analyses and neural network. The results of CFD analyses were used for learning as data of input and output of neural network. After learning neural network optimization process was accomplished for design variables, the angle and the shape of cut-off, in the design domain. As a result of optimization, the optimal angle and shape were obtained as 71 and 0.092 times the outer diameter of impeller, respectively, which are very similar values to previous studies. Finally, it was verified that the fluid field is very stable for optimal angle and shape of cut-off by two-dimensional CFD analysis.

  • This paper presents the response surface optimization method using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes Analysis to optimize the shape of a axial flow fan. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with k-$\epsilon$ turbulence model are discretized with finite volume approximations. Regression analysis is used for generating response surface, and it is validated by ANOVA. Five geometric variables, i.e., distribution of sweep angle at mean and tip, lean angle at mean and tip, and spanwise location of mean were employed to optimize the efficiency. The computational results are compared with experiment data. As a main result of the optimization, the efficiency was successfully improved.

  • The leaning angle optimization of turbine blade using the genetic algorithm was conducted in this paper. The calculation CFD technique was based upon the Diagonalized Alternating Directional Implicit scheme(DADI) with algebraic turbulence modeling. The leaning angle of VKI turbine blade was represented using B-spline curve. The control points are the design variable. Genetic algorithm was taken into account as an optimization tool. The objective was to minimize the total pressure loss. The optimized final geometry shows the better aerodynamic performance compared with the initial turbine blade.

  • In this study, response surface method (RSM) was used in modeling and multi-objective optimization of the parameters of AA5052-H32 in incremental sheet forming (ISF). The goals of optimization were the maximum forming angle, minimum thickness reduction, and minimum surface roughness, with varying values in response to changes in production process parameters, such as tool diameter, tool spindle speed, step depth, and tool feed rate. A Box-Behnken experimental design (BBD) was used to develop an RSM model for modeling the variations in the forming angle, thickness reduction, and surface roughness in response to variations in process parameters. Subsequently, the RSM model was used as the fitness function for multi-objective optimization of the ISF process based on experimental design. The results showed that RSM can be effectively used to control the forming angle, thickness reduction, and surface roughness.

  • We present a procedure for the application of global orthogonal polynomial into an atmospheric re-entry maneuvering problem. This trajectory optimization is imbedded in a family of canonically parameterized optimal control problem. The optimal control problem is transcribed to nonlinear programming via global orthogonal polynomial and is solved a sparse nonlinear optimization algorithm. We analyze the optimal trajectories with respect to the performance of re-entry maneuver.

  • One of the important problems in the vehicle design is vehicle handling and stability. Effective parameters which should be considered in the vehicle handling and stability are roll angle, camber angle and scrub radius. In this paper, a planar vehicle model is considered that two right and left suspensions are double wishbone suspension system. For a better analysis of the suspension geometry, a kinestatic model of vehicle is considered which instantaneous kinematic and statics relations are analyzed simultaneously. In this model, suspension geometry is considered completely. In order to optimum design of double wishbones suspension system, a multi-objective genetic algorithm is applied. Three important parameters of suspension including roll angle, camber angle and scrub radius are taken into account as objective functions. Coordinates of suspension hard points are design variables of optimization which optimum values of them, corresponding to each optimum point, are obtained in the optimization process. Pareto solutions for three objective functions are derived. There are important optimum points in these Pareto solutions which each point represents an optimum status in the model. In other words, corresponding to any optimal point, a specific geometric position is determined for the suspension hard points. Each of the obtained points in the Pareto optimization can be selected for a special design purpose by designer to create an optimum condition in the vehicle handling and stability.

  • This paper presents a theoretical method to deal with the aerodynamic performance and pitch optimization of the horizontal axis wind turbine blades at low wind speeds. By considering a blade element, the functional relationship among the angle of attack, pitch angle, rotational speed of the blade, and wind speed is derived in consideration of a quasi-steady aerodynamic model, and aerodynamic loads on the blade element are then obtained. The torque and torque coefficient of the blade are derived by using integration. A polynomial approximation is applied to functions of the lift and drag coefficients for the symmetric and asymmetric airfoils respectively, where specific expressions of aerodynamic loads as functions of the angle of attack (which is a function of pitch angle) are obtained. The pitch optimization problem is investigated by considering the maximum value problem of the instantaneous torque of a blade as a function of pitch angle. Dynamic pitch laws for HAWT blades with either symmetric or asymmetric airfoils are derived. Influences of parameters including inflow ratio, rotational speed, azimuth, and wind speed on torque coefficient and optimal pith angle are discussed.

  • Slope optimization aims to maximize the slope angle in an open pit mine, resulting in subsequent profits from additional ore extraction. The large open pit mines have adopted the advanced technologies to increase slope angle until they ensure the slope stability. This paper introduces a current stage of slope optimization efforts and best practices from the open pit mines.
