  • Nondestructive examination for low pressure turbine disc in standard nuclear power plant using phased array technique was studied. For this purpose, disc mockups were made and notches were machined in the mockups. Detection and length sizing by different methods are compared. Depth of deep notches could be measured by using AATT(absolute arrival time technique) or RATT(relative arrival time technique) but shallow notches that must be detected in early stage couldn't be measured by these two methods. For this case, notch depth was estimated by using signal response angle range and preyed usefulness.

  • We present a simulation study of an algorithm for the range and angle of arrival(AOA) estimation with an interferometric synthetic aperture radar(InSAR) altimeter using a real digital elevation model(DEM). We also illustrate a step-by-step procedure of generating raw InSAR data, as well as their range and azimuth compressed data, which is to be used for the subsequent altitude and angle estimation. The AOA is estimated using a deterministic maximum likelihood estimator(DMLE) applied to the first arrived point for each pulse in the compressed data obtained with three antennas. The range bin size and the pulse repetition interval(PRI) are much smaller than the cell size of the DEM used in this study. To make the DEM compatible to the radar parameters, we first generate a higher resolution DEM by linearly interpolating the given DEM. After a brief description of the principle of the InSAR altimeter, the algorithms for altitude and angle estimation are presented, and their performance is assessed through simulation.

  • A single snapshot data can only provide limited amount of information so that the rank of covariance matrix is not full, which is not adopted to complete the parameter estimation directly using the traditional super-resolution method. Aiming at solving the problem, a joint time delay and angle estimation using matrix pencil method based on information reconstruction vector for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal is proposed. Firstly, according to the channel frequency response vector of each array element, the algorithm reconstructs the vector data with delay and angle parameter information from both frequency and space dimensions. Then the enhanced data matrix for the extended array element is constructed, and the parameter vector of time delay and angle is estimated by the two-dimensional matrix pencil (2D MP) algorithm. Finally, the joint estimation of two-dimensional parameters is accomplished by the parameter pairing. The algorithm does not need a pseudo-spectral peak search, and the location of the target can be determined only by a single receiver, which can reduce the overhead of the positioning system. The theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the estimation accuracy of the proposed method in a single snapshot and low signal-to-noise ratio environment is much higher than that of Root Multiple Signal Classification algorithm (Root-MUSIC), and this method also achieves the higher estimation performance and efficiency with lower complexity cost compared to the one-dimensional matrix pencil algorithm.

  • The satellite employs an adaptive beamformer to efficiently detect various signals and to suppress multiple interference signals, simultaneously. Although the adaptive beamforming satellite system needs Angle-of-Arrival (AOA) information of the desired signal, it is difficult to estimate the signal AOAs on the satellite environment. However, the AOA estimation on the ground control tower is more efficient and accurate comparing to the satellite environment. In this paper, we propose an adaptive beamforming satellite system based on the signal location information on the ground, consisting on an angle estimator, an adaptive beamformer, and signal processing & D/B unit. The ground control tower estimates the accurate location of the signal source, and it sends the estimated coordinates of the desired signal to the satellite. The angle estimator mounted on the satellite calculates the desired signal AOA, based on the signal location information transmitted from the ground control center. The satellite beamformer detects the desired signal and suppresses unwanted signals based on the signal AOA calculated by the angle estimator. We provide computer simulation results to present the performance of the proposed satellite adaptive beamforming system based on the signal location information.

  • Estimation of unknown signal parameters with sensor array measurements has been investigated quite extensively. Also, there has been in recent years an explosive increase in the number of mobile users in wireless cellular systems, thus contributing to growing levels of multi-user interference. To overcome this problem, application of adaptive antenna array techniques to further increase the channel capacity has been discussed. In this paper, a new model of locally scattered signals in the vicinity of mobiles is proposed by defining the mean steering vector and is manipulated mathematically for several distributions. Under this model an estimation method of the angle of arrival(AOA) is investigated based on a weighted subspace fitting(WSF) technique. Statistical analysis and simulations are also considered.

  • Hybrid beamformer composed of Direction-of-Arrival (DOA) based scheme followed by Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC) is proposed to overcome the degradation due to inaccurate channel estimation caused by insufficient pilot power, which happens in conventional Single-Input Multiple-Output (SIMO) Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) reverse link. The proposed scheme could provide more accurate channel estimation and interference reduction at the expense of diversity gam in the spatially correlated SIMO channel. As a result, hybrid scheme outperforms conventional MRC beamformer for six or more antennas in the channel environment, in which Angle-of-Spread (AOS) is within 30$^{\circ}$.

  • In location finding system using spaced multi-sensor, there is the phenomenon that the position estimation accuracy is degraded by the location of signal sources and the sensors. This phenomenon is called GDOP(Geometric Dilution Of Precision) effect. and to minimize these effects, research is needed on how. In this paper, I will describe how to minimize GDOP effect, estimating possibility of GDOP using AOA(angle of arrival) information of spaced multi sensors, and removing sensor error factor in position estimation.

  • In the environment of wireless communication system of IEEE 802.15.3a UWB standard, the angle of arrival(AOA) estimation technique for the indoor wireless positioning algorithms, based on the AOA parameter estimation which fits well for the wireless communication channel and shows high estimation accuracy, is proposed. After the UWB signal model, based on the IEEE 802.1.3a standard, is constructed, the average weighted MUSIC technique is proposed, which shows better estimation accuracy than those of conventional estimation technique. Through the simulation studies, the environment of the indoor wireless positioning system including the IEEE 802.15.3a channel is configured and we demonstrate better estimation results by the proposed AOA estimation technique than those from the conventional method.

  • Eigenstructure-based adaptive beamfoming has advantages of fast convergence and the insentivity to errors in the arrival angle of the desired signal. Eigen-decomposing the sample matrix to extract a basis for the Sl (signal plus interference) subspace, however, is very computationally expensive. In this paper, we present a simple subspace based beamforming which utilizes off-diagonal elements of the sample matrix to estimate the Sl subspace. The outputs of overlapped subarrays are combined to produce the final adaptive output, which improves SINR (signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio) comapred to exploiting a single subarray. The proposed adaptive beamformer, which employs an efficient angle estimation is very roubust to errors in both the arrival angles and the number of the incident signals, while the eigenstructure-based beamforer suffers from severe performance degradation.
