Introduction: Bone resorption is a unique function of osteoclasts. Osteoclasts are a specialized macrophage polykaryon whose differentiation is regulated principally by macrophage colony-stimulating factors, receptor activator of nuclear factor ${\kappa}B$ ligand (RANK) ligand, osteoprotegerin (OPG), and interleukins (IL). Reflecting the integrin-mediated signals, osteoclasts develop a specialized cytoskeleton that allows it to establish an isolated micro-environment between itself and the bone, wherein matrix degradation occurs by a process involving proton transport. The levels of IL-1, IL-6, OPG, and prostaglandin $E_2$ ($PGE_2$) expression were evaluated to study the correlations between dental implant teeth and the adjacent teeth. Materials and Methods: The exudate of the gingival crevice acquired from dental implants, adjacent teeth, opposite teeth and contralateral teeth of 24 patients. Results: 1. The levels of IL-1, IL-6, OPG and $PGE_2$ expression in dental implant teeth were higher than those of the contralateral teeth. 2. IL-1 revealed a higher expression level in the adjacent teeth than in dental implant teeth. 3. The dental implant teeth and adjacent teeth did not show a remarkable difference in the level of IL-1 expression. 4. All the other cytokines were strongly expressed in the dental implant compared to the adjacent teeth. Conclusion: These results suggest that there might be close correlation between dental implant teeth and adjacent teeth in terms of the expressions of cytokines that affect the development and regulation of osteoclasts.

The clinical and radiographic features of 655 congenitally missing teeth were studied with full mouth periapical radiograms and/or pantomograms from 368 persons visited the Department of Oral Radiology, Infirmary of Dentistry, Kyung Hee University during January 1981 to December 1989. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The prevalence of congenitally missing teeth was revealed to be 8.75% in total examined persons, and there was a higher prevalence in females (9.5%) than in males (8.0%). 2. The most frequently missing teeth were mandibular second premolars (24.6%), followed by mandibular lateral incisors (21.7%), maxillary second premolars (16.2%), and maxillary lateral incisors (11.5%). 3. There was a higher prevalence in the mandible (60.3%) than in the maxilla (39.7%), and no significant differences between right (49.65%) and left (50.35%) side. 4. In number of congenitally missing teeth per person, 54.6% had one missing tooth, and 32.9% had two missing teeth. 5. In persons with one or two congenitally missing teeth, the most frequently missing tooth was mandibular lateral incisor, and the second premolar was the tooth most frequently missing in those persons with more than three congenitally missing teeth.

A material of 48 patients with 60 avulsed and replanted permanent teeth were followed retrospectively in the period of 1996. 1 to 1998. 12 (mean observation period=1year 7months). The age of the patients at the time of replantation ranged from 9 to 63 years (mean=24 years). Clinical records of patients were reviewed to obtain valid data concerning the extent of injury and treatment provided. Pulpal and periodontal healing states were examined with periapical x-rays and clinical examination procedures (i.e. percussion test and mobility test) at their recall visit. Root ankylosis was found in fifty-two teeth(87%) and root resorption in twenty-four(40%). Only two of the replanted teeth(3%) showed partial regeneration of the periodontal ligament. Six teeth(10%) resulted in tooth loss, but the remaining fifty-four were clinically well functioning. Most of teeth have mild marginal bone loss accompanied by gingival retraction without pathological periodontal pockets. The incidence of root resorption was much higher in younger age group. However, it was not affected by the interval between avulsion and replantation, the condition of supporting tissues, the degree of root formation and the type of splinting, indicating that multiple factors involved in determining the prognosis of replanted teeth. Based on these findings, avulsed teeth in unfavorable conditions (i.e. long extra-alveolar periods, etc.) should be preserved if possible.
The five different types of bacteria, Bacteroides, Actinomyces, Capnocytophaga, Streptococcus, Fusobacterium which had frequently been recovered in infected canals, were investigated. The purpose of this study was to investigate the bacteriologic status in the traumatized nonvital teeth, and to investigate the effects of bacteria on the size of the le8ion and on the discoloration of teeth. The canal contents of sxiteen traumatized nonvital teeth were sampled and cultured aerobically and anaerobically for growth in five selective agar plates for five bacterial species. The sizes of the radiolucent areas in periapical films were measured and according to the sizes, the samples were divided into two groups. The discoloration of the teeth was checked and according to the existence of the discoloration, the samples were divided into two groups, also. The difference of bacterial colonial numbers in each group was investigated and the following results were obtained. 1. In traumatized nonvital teeth, all of the samples gave bacterial growth except one case. 2. Streptococcus was isolated in four cases but Bacteroides, Actinomyces, Fusobacterium and Capnocytophaga were not isolated. 3. The number of bacterial colonies was not found to be related the size of the lesion periapical films. 4. The number of bacterial colonies was not found to be related the discoloration of teeth.
PURPOSE. This study evaluated the bond strength between porcelain denture teeth (Bioblend 43D) and four different polymerized denture resins (Lucitone 199, Palapress, Acron MC, Triad) with and without a bonding agent and after four different types of surface treatment (polished, HF etched, sandblasted, air-abraded). MATERIALS AND METHODS. Central incisor porcelain denture teeth were divided into 32 groups of 5 each. Tensile bond strength (MPa) was determined using a testing machine at crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Mean and standard deviation are listed. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA. Means were compared by Tukey-Kramer intervals at 0.05 significance level. RESULTS. All surface treatment increased bond strength compared to polished surface and the highest bond strength was found with Palapress resin with etched porcelain surface (8.1 MPa). Bonding agent improved the bond strength of all denture resins to porcelain teeth. Superior bonding was found with Palapress and air-abraded porcelain (39 MPa). CONCLUSION. Resins with different curing methods affect the bond strength of porcelain teeth to denture bases. Superior bonding was found with auto-polymerized resin (Palapress). Application of ceramic primer and bonding agent to porcelain teeth with and without surface treatment will improve the bond strength of all denture resins to porcelain teeth.
In the field Of individual identification in forensic Science, if the body is charred, it is sometimes impossible to identify the morphologic changes and charred tissue such as blood, muscle and bone can not be identified by forensic microbiologic method such as DNA typing. So the author used the characteristics of teeth which is relatively firm compare to other organs and stable to external environment such as heat and also possess cells needed for the DNA typing. The author conducted the experiment on teeth to detect DNA related to individual identification regarding to temperature in which other charredorgans can not be detected. The experiment was done on 64 extracted third molars consisted of unheated ones, and heated teeth to $100^{\circ}C$, $150^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$ for 45 min, 90 min, and 120 min respectively and to $250^{\circ}C$ for 45 min. DNA was extracted from each tooth and amplified fragment length polymorphism procedure(AMP-FLPs) using polymerase chain reaction(PCR) was applied and observed for the matching DNA in HumTH01 and HumCD4 locus and the followings Are the results : 1. It was able to detect matching DNA in HumTH01 and HumCD4 locus in every teeth which no heating has been done. 2. It was able to detect matching DNA in HumTH01 and HumCD4 locus in every teeth heated to $100^{\circ}C$ for 45, 90 and 120 min. 3. It was able to detect matching DNA in HumTH01 and HumCD4 locus in teeth heated to $l00^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$ for 45, 90, 120 min. 4. It was impossible to detect matching DNA in HumTH01 and HumCD4 locus in teeth heated to $250^{\circ}C$. So, it is possible to extract DNA from teeth that otherwise can not be extracted from other organs in the charred body and it can be concluded that teeth are highly reliable and applicatable as forensic odontology for individual identification.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the stress distribution and the displacement in the temporomandibular joints following the teeth loss patterns. The three dimensional finite element method was used for a mathematical model. The finite element model was composed of 1,632 elements and 2,411 nodes in the mandible with articular disc and mandibular fossa of the temporal bone. The masseter, the temporal and the internal pterygoid muscle forces were applied at each insertion site, bisecting point of gonion and antegonion, tip of the coronoid process, and gonion at the ration of 2:2:1 respectively. The directions of muscles force were obtained from frontal and lateral cephalometric tracings using bony landmarks of the skull. The results were as follows : 1. In control model, the minimum principal stresses were concentrated on the region of anterosuperior part of the condyle head and articular disc, and maximum principal stresses on the anterior part of the condyle head and posterolateral part of the articular disc. 2. In case of unilateral teeth loss, the greater principal stress appeared at the teeth loss side and the principal stresses increased at the teeth loss side as the number of the posterior teeth loss went up. 3. In case of bilateral teeth loss, the principal stresses were greater than those of the control model and as the number of the posterior teeth loss increased, the grater principal stresses on the temporomandibular joints appeared at the both side. 4. When the posterior teeth existed bilateral, the principal stress patterns were similar to those of the control model. 5. The displacement ws directed mainly upward and backward in the upper part of the temporomandibular joints and upward and forward in the largest part of the condyle head. The displacement increased as the number of the posterior teeth loss went up.

Bones and teeth impact quality of life and serve as important indicators of overall health, and diseases such as osteoporosis and periodontitis are emerging as increasingly significant health issues in aging societies. In traditional Korean medicine(TKM), bones and teeth are classified under the kidneys, explaining their interrelationship, and biomedical studies have been published on this connection. This study aims to compare the perspectives of TKM and biomedicine on the relationship between the kidneys, bones, and teeth, focusing on similarities between the two disciplines. The fact that the kidneys produce active vitamin D, which contributes to skeletal formation, and that sex hormones, which influence the lifespan of osteoclasts and osteoblasts, resemble the role of the kidneys(腎) in TKM, which are associated with growth and reproduction, aligns with the TKM concept that "the kidneys govern the bones" (腎主骨). Furthermore, the histological similarity between bones and teeth, as well as the metabolic parallels involving osteoclast metabolism, retinoic acid metabolism, and vitamin D, support the idea that "teeth are the surplus of bones" (齒者骨之餘). In addition to the kidneys acting on the shared pathways of bones and teeth, the pathological link between kidney deficiency(腎虛) and dental diseases-caused by aging, overwork, or congenital deficiencies-explains the concept that "the kidneys govern the teeth"(腎主齒). This study contributes to an integrated understanding of both disciplines by comparing the TKM concept with biomedical explanations concerning the kidneys, bones, and teeth. Through this approach, it can be demonstrated that TKM concepts remain valid in modern contexts, while also suggesting the potential to explain less clearly understood TKM theories in this manner.
The present study seeks to find the effect of oral health status that parents recognized, oral health habit and food intake on existence of decalcified teeth and decayed teeth. Participants were 293 infants aged 18-24 months who visited C dental clinic in Kyungki province between January and December 2010. Questionnaires and oral exam results were used and statistically analyzed by the SPSS program. Fisher's Exact and chi-square test were used to analyze the data. The 18-20 month-old age group had the highest rate of decalcified teeth with 36.4% while the 23-24 month-old age group had the highest rate of decayed teeth with 37.0%. Bottle feeding showed correlation with decalcified teeth, and decayed teeth. Parents were able to recognize decayed teeth and decalcified teeth. Group 2 food(soda/soft drinks/sugared fruit juice) was related to decalcified teeth and decayed teeth(p<.001). Group 4 food (cake/cookies/doughnut/dried fruit/banana) and group 5food(caramel/candy/chocolate bar) were both related to decalcified teeth(p<.001). As the result of dental examination, dental treatment was highly needed for the 21-22 month-old age group(89.3%), and preventive treatment and plaque control were highly needed for the 18-20 month-old age group(94.5%). The results concluded that 18-24 months was the critical period for children's oral health, therefore organized oral health education for parents is necessary.
Background: The size of the tooth whitening market and toothpaste market is increasing worldwide. The purpose of this in vitro study is to confirm and compare the coffee stain removal effects of commercial whitening toothpaste in sound and demineralized teeth, respectively. Methods: A total of 112 flat permanent bovine teeth specimens were manufactured. Half of the surface of the specimen was coated with an acid-resistant varnish and deposited in an artificial demineralizing solution for 65 hours. The varnish applied to half of the specimen was removed and deposited in a coffee solution for 96 hours to induce coloring. Two control and five experimental group toothpastes for teeth whitening were selected and the main components were investigated. Toothbrushing was performed 50, 100, and 150 times for each toothpaste group. A total of four images were obtained: before the start and after 50, 100, and 150 times of brushing to obtain the lightness (L*) values of the sound and the demineralized tooth surfaces. The difference in the average value between toothpaste groups at each treatment period was analyzed by one-way ANOVA. The difference in the L* average value according to the number of the brushing was analyzed by repeated measure ANOVA. Results: All toothpastes in the seven groups contained abrasive agents and had different ingredients for each product. Compared to before brushing, the L* value changed significantly in all toothpaste groups after brushing 50 times (p<0.05). This was common in both the sound and demineralized teeth surfaces. Demineralized teeth had significantly lower L* values at all brushing times than that in sound teeth (p<0.05). Conclusion: The effect of whitening teeth was different for each toothpaste. Demineralized teeth were more likely to cause coloration than sound teeth, and the coloration was not removed well.
