  • In this study, the concentrations of major odorous compounds including reduced sulfur compounds (OMS, CS$_2$, and DMDS) and aromatic VOC (benzene, toluene, xylene, etc.) were measured continuously using an on-line GC analytical system. Our measurements were made from a residential area of Ansan sity during about two week period of October, 2004. The highest mean concentrations of Sand VOC were found as 56.9 pbb of DMS and 21.7 ppb of toluene, respectively. The results of this study generally show that the pollution levels for both types of chemicals are significant relative to previous measurement results reported from comparable sites, if the results are compared simply in terms of the magnitude of the measured concentration data. Moreover, when the relative importance of different compounds is compared in terms of the odor strength, it indicated that the contribution of reduced S compounds may be much more important than that of VOC in the study area.

  • In this study, the environmental behavior of malodor pollutants (MPs: $H_2S$, $CH_3SH$, DMS, and DMDS) was investigated around areas influenced by strong anthropogenic processes based on observations and modeling study (a CALPUFF dispersion model). The MP emission concentrations were measured from 8 industrial source regions (tire plants (S1-S3), waste water disposal plant (S4), and oil refinery (S5) in an urban center area and paper mill/incineration plant (S6) and livestock feedlots (S7-S8) in Ungsang area) in Yangsan city during a fall period in 2008 (21 October 2008). Overall, the most MPs emitted from the urban center area were found to affect the malodor pollution in their downwind areas during early morning (06:00 LST) and nighttime (18:00 and 21:00 LST), compared with those in the Ungsang area. For malodor intensity, the most MPs in the urban center area (especially S1 and S2) were found to be a significant contributor, whereas $CH_3SH$ and $H_2S$ in the Ungsnag area (especially S6) were the dominant contributor. The model study showed agreement in the spatial distributions of simulated MPs with those of the observations. The largest impact of MPs in the urban center area on the malodor pollution in its residential areas occurred at S1, S2, and S3 sites during nighttime, while that of MPs in the Ungsang area occurred at S6 and S8 sites. This may be caused mainly by the high MP emissions and in part by wind conditions (prevailing northeasterly winds with low wind speeds of 2-3 m/s).

  • In this study, storage stability of reduced sulfur compounds ($H_2S$, $CH_3SH$, DMS, $CS_2$, and DMDS) and $SO_2$ in sampling bags was investigated in terms of two contrasting storage approaches between forward (F) and reverse (R) direction. The samples for the F method were prepared at the same time and analyzed sequentially through time. In contrast, those of reverse (R) method were prepared sequentially in advance and analyzed all at once upon the preparation of the last sample. In addition, relative performance between two different bag materials (PVF and PEA) was also assessed by using 100 ppb standard. The response factors (RF) of gaseous RSC samples were determined by gas chromatography/pulsed flame photometric detector (GC/PFPD) combined with air server (AS)/thermal desorber (TD) system at storage intervals of 0, 1, and 3 days. There is no statistical difference in all RSCs between two storage methods. However, the results of relative recovery indicated 2.58~12.8% differences in compound type between the two storage methods. Moreover, loss rates and storage stability of $H_2S$ and $SO_2$ were considerably affected by bag materials than any other variables. Therefore, some considerations about storage methods (or bag material types) for sulfur compounds are needed if stored by sampling bag method.

  • It is very important to treat infected livestock carcasses safely and quickly. In this study, the degradation characteristics and odor generation characteristics of carcasses were investigated during the treatment of swine carcasses using the anaerobic burial composting method. While the carcasses were decomposed, the temperature remained high, at $40{\sim}55^{\circ}C$ on average, and most of the carcasses were decomposed rapidly. The major odor-contributing substances in the buried composting method are sulfuric odor substances such as $H_2S$, $CH_3SH$, dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), and the odor contribution of these substances is 93~99%. Among them, $CH_3SH$, which accounts for about 56~89% of odor contribution, was the most representative indicator substance. Despite the anaerobic digestion process, the methane concentration in the digestion process was as low as 0.5~0.8% at the burial point of the carcass. The odor and methane produced during the decomposition of the carcasses decreased considerably during the discharge to the surface layer through the buried layer consisting of compost. These results suggest that anaerobic high temperature burial composting is one of the most useful methods to treat carcasses of infected livestock.

  • In this study, the recovery rate of Tedlar bag (T) sampler was investigated in comparison to polyester aluminum bag (P) sampler. To derive the comparative data sets for the relative performance between different samplers, a series of calibration experiments were performed by using 1 ppb standard of four offensive reduced sulfur compounds (RSC) odorants ($H_2S$, $CH_3SH$, DMS, and DMDS) along with $SO_2$ and $CS_2$. All the analysis was made by gas chromatography/pulsed flame photometric detector (GC/PFPD) combined with air server/thermal desorber (AS/TD). The measurement data were obtained by loading gaseous standards (1 ppb) at 3 injection volumes (250, 500 and 1,000 mL) at three intervals (0, 24 and 72 hrs). The recovery rates (RR) of P sampler were computed against the slope values of T sampler. According to our analysis, P sampler exhibits slightly enhanced loss relative to T, especially with light RSCs ($H_2S$ and $CH_3SH$). At day 0, RR for the two were 88 and 85%, respectively. Such reduction proceeded rather rapidly in the case of $H_2S$ through time. However, P sampler was more stable to store $SO_2$ unlike others. Despite slightly reduced recovery, P sampler appears as a good replacement of T sampler.

  • To comply with stricter regulations provoked by increasing odor nuisance, it is imperative to practice effective odor control for sustainable livestock production. This study was conducted to assess odor and odorous compounds emitted from liquid animal manure with different treatment methods such as Fresh Manure(without treatment, FM), Anaerobic Digestion(AD) and Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion(TAD) and their application to soil. Air samples were collected at the headspace of liquid manure, upland and paddy soil, and analyzed for odor intensity and offensiveness using an olfactometry; odor concentration index using odor analyser; nitrogen-containing compound such as ammonia(NH3) using fluorescence method; and sulfur containing compounds such as hydrogen sulfide(H2S), methyl mercaptan(MeSH), dimethyl sulfide(DMS) and dimethyl disulfide(DMDS) using gas chromatography-pulsed flame photometric detector, respectively. Odor intensity, offensiveness and concentration index from TAD liquid manure was statistically lower than those from FM and AD(p<0.01). Mean concentrations of H2S, MeSH, DMS, DMDS and NH3 were 65.93ppb, 18.55ppb, 5.26ppb, 0.33ppb and 10.57ppm for liquid manure with AD; and 5.15ppb, 0.97ppb, 0.80ppb, 0.56ppb and 1.34ppm for liquid manure with TAD, respectively. More than 60% of malodorous compounds related to nitrogen and sulfur were removed by heterotrophic microorganisms during TAD treatment. When liquid manure was applied onto upland and paddy soil, NH3 removal efficiencies ranged from 51 to 94% and 22 to 91% for AD and TAD liquid manure, respectively. The above results show that liquid manure with TAD is superior to AD and FM with respect to the odor reduction and odor problem caused by land applied liquid manure is directly related to the degree of odor generated by the manure treatment method.

  • In this study, a series of experiments were carried out to measure temporal stability of reduced sulfur compounds (RSCs) in Tedlar bag samples as a function of elapsed storage time. To this end, temporal variability of 4 RSC standard gases ($H_2S$, $CH_3SH$, DMS, DMDS) was measured up to 29 days. For the purpose of comparison, RSC samples were stored in both individual and mixed state. In the case of mixed standard, samples were also examined to allow comparison between light and dark condition. Then results of $CH_3SH$ data were the most stable with the least change in its concentrations through the end of exps (29 days). When compared with previous studies, the extent of stability appeared to be influenced by the initial concentration levels of samples. When the patterns were compared between individual and mixture samples, differences were not significant in the case of $H_2S$ and DMS. The effects of light conditions on temporal stability were seen to be fairly sensitive on most RSC other than $H_2S$. The results of our study confirm that the stability of RSC storage is affected by their involvement in photochemical reactions.

  • To develop a sustainable composting method for livestock mortality, a natural aeration-composting process was designed and the influences of bulking materials on the mortality composting process were studied. Bulking materials (e.g., compost, swine manure, sawdust, and rice husks), easily supplied at the scene of an animal mortality outbreak, were tested in this research. A lab-scale composting system (W34 ${\times}$ L60 ${\times}$ H26 cm) was made using 100 mm styrofoam, and natural aeration was achieved through pipes installed on the bottom of the system. Four treatments were designed (compost, compost + swine feces, sawdust, and rice husks treatment groups) and all experiments were done in triplicates. During composting for 40 days, no leachate was observed in compost and sawdust treatment groups, whereas 18 and 8.2 ml leachate/kg-mortality was emitted from the compost + feces and rice husks treatment groups, respectively. Dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) emission during the composting was very low in all treatment groups, possibly due to the bio-filtering function of the compost cover layer on the pile. The mortality degradability in compost, compost + feces, sawdust, and rice husks groups was 25.3, 25.8, 13.5, and 14.5%, respectively, showing significantly higher levels in compost and compost + feces groups (p<0.05). Also, only the compost + feces group produced enough heat (over $55^{\circ}C$) and lasted for 7 days, indicating that bio-security cannot be guaranteed without feces supplementation.

  • In this study, we have evaluated the effect of efficient microorganisms on odor-removal efficiency and early stabilization of the burial sites. We have developed an efficient microorganism designated as 'KEM' which have the ability to degrade organic compounds and remove odor effectively. Other efficient microorganisms already used on site, such as EM and Bacillus sp., were also compared. We preceded these experiment using lab-scale reactors under three conditions (control, only media and only body) and comparing the effect of with or without the application of tree efficient microorganisms separately. Analysis was focused on eight components (ammonia, TMA, $H_2S$, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, $CO_2$ and $CH_4$), and as a result, efficient microorganisms were shown efficiency in the removal of ammonia and methyl mercaptan. The applied KEM decayed up to 71.2% of the buried meat. We were unable to observe significant differences in microbial communities between efficient microorganisms-treated and non-treated reactors due to the large presence of microorganisms in both soil and carcasses. However, it was possible to observe the effect on odor control and decay rate through the application of efficient microorganisms.
