Fish backbone, a major by-product in the fish processing industry, accounts for about 15% of whole fish weight. In this study, recovery of bioavailable calcium from Alaska pollack (Theragra chalcogramma) backbone by-products using enzymatic hydrolysis was investigated. Finely ground fish backbones were hydrolyzed with two proteolytic enzymes (pepsin and protease) to obtain soluble calcium from the by-products. The pepsin digest had a higher degradation efficiency (88%) than protease. Four different concentrations of the fish backbone calcium (100, 250, 500 and 1000 mg/L) prepared by the pepsin digest were treated with $Na_2HPO_4$ at a concentration gradient (0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 10, 15 and 20 mM) to evaluate their solubility, revealing that solubilities of the fish backbone calcium were superior to those of $CaCl_2$ at all the calcium and $Na_2HPO_4$ concentrations. Among the tested concentrations the highest solubility was found in the pepsin digest containing a calcium concentration of 1000 mg/L. Thus, hydrolyzing with pepsin is an effective mode of recovering bioavailable calcium from Alaska pollack fish backbones.
The functional properties such as a firming maintenance capacity for fermented vegetables, protein coagulation capacity antibacterial activity, calcium and peroxide absorption capacity of calcium powder of cuttle bone treated with acetic acid (ATC) were examined. In the Korean pickled cucumbers (20 days), the calcium content of ethanol insoluble solids was 5,264.9 mg/100 g and this value was higher than that of control (2,036.4 mg/100 g). Protein coagulation capacity of ATC was $0.9\%$ and its calcium absorption capacity was $49.3\%.$ The peroxide absorption capacity of ATC was shown $0-1.1\%$ range. Antibacterial activity was detected above $0.2\%.$ The ATC was effective in a firming maintenance of fermented vegetables (cucumber), coagulation capacities for soybean milk and antibacterial activity. The ATC was not effective in clarifying wastewater. Peroxide absorption capacity toward linoleic acid could not be checked by ATC, but its calcium absorption ratio was high compared to that of commercial calcium powder.
Statement of problem. Nano-scale calcium-phosphate coating on the anodizing titanium surface using ion beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) has been recently introduced to improve the early osseointegration. However, not much is known about their surface characteristics that have influence on tissue-implant interaction. Purpose. This study was aimed to investigate microtopography, surface roughness, surface composition, and wettability of the titanium surface modified by the anodic oxidation and calcium phosphate coating using IBAD. Material and methods. Commercially pure titanium disks were used as substrates. The experiment was composed of four groups. Group MA surfaces represented machined surface. Group AN was anodized surface. Group CaP/AN was anodic oxidized and calcium phosphate coated surfaces. Group SLA surfaces were sandblasted and acid etched surfaces. The prepared titanium discs were examined as follows. The surface morphology of the discs was examined using SEM. The surface roughness was measured by a confocal laser scanning microscope. Phase components were analyzed using thin-film x-ray diffraction. Wettability analyses were performed by contact angle measurement with distilled water, formamide, bromonaphtalene and surface free energy calculation. Results. (1) The four groups showed specific microtopography respectively. Anodized and calcium phosphate coated specimens showed multiple micropores and tiny homogeneously distributed crystalline particles. (2) The order of surface roughness values were, from the lowest to the highest, machined group, anodized group, anodized and calcium phosphate deposited group, and sandblasted and acid etched group. (3) Anodized and calcium phosphate deposited group was found to have titanium and titanium anatase oxides and exhibited calcium phosphorous crystalline structures. (4) Surface wettability was increased in the order of calcium phosphate deposited group, machined group, anodized group, sandblasted and acid etched group. Conclusion. After ion beam-assisted deposition on anodized titanium, the microporous structure remained on the surface and many small calcium phosphorous crystals were formed on the porous surface. Nanoscale calcium phosphorous deposition induced roughness on the microporous surface but hydrophobicity was increased.
This study was performed to verify the possibility of MTA and calcium sulfate as a pulp capping agent through comparing the dental pulp response in dogs after capping with MTA, calcium sulfate, and calcium hydroxide. 24 teeth of 2 dogs, 8 month old, were used in this study. Under general anesthesia, cervical cavities were prepared and pulp was exposed with sterilized #2 round bur in a high speed handpiece. MTA calcium hydroxide, and calcium sulfate were applied on the exposed pulp. Then the coronal openin,fs were sealed with IRM and light-cured composite. Two months after treatment, the animals were sacrificed. The extracted teeth were fixed in 10% neutral-buffered formalin solution and were decalcified in formic acid-sodium citrate. They were prepared for histological examination in the usual manner. The sections were stained with haematoxylin and eosin. In MTA group, a hard tissue bridges formation and newly formed odontoblasts layer was observed. There was no sign of pulp inflammatory reaction in pulp tissue. In calcium hydroxide group, there was no odontoblast layer below the dentin bridge. In pulpal tissue, chronic inflammatory reaction with variable intensity and extension occurred in all samples. In calcium sulfate group, newly formed odontoblast layer was observed below the bridge. Mild chronic inflammation with a few neutrophil infiltrations was observed on pulp tissue. These results suggest that MTA is more biocompatible on pulp tissue than calcium hydroxide or calcium sulfate.
To isolate a calcium-binding peptide from chlorella protein hydrolysates, chlorella protein was extracted and hydrolyzed using Flavourzyme, a commercial protease. The degree of hydrolysis and calcium-binding capacity were determined using trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid and orthophenanthroline methods, respectively. The enzymatic hydrolysis of chlorella protein for 6 hr was sufficient for the preparation of chlorella protein hydrolysates. The hydrolysates of chlorella protein were then ultra-filtered under 5 kDa as molecular weight. The membrane-filtered solution was fractionated using ion exchange, reverse phase, normal phase chromatography, and fast protein liquid chromatography to identify a calcium-binding peptide. The purified calcium-binding peptide had a calcium binding activity of 0.166 mM and was determined to be 700.48 Da as molecular weight, and partially identified as a peptide containing Asn-Ser-Gly-Cys based on liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrum.
Objectives : Egg yolk is composed of various important chemical substances for human health. A calcium shortage causes the growth retardation on the body growth. In this study, we examined the therapeutic effects of calcium, vitamin D and egg yolk peptide (EYP) treatment on the retardation of the longitudinal bone growth induced by low-calcium diet in adolescent rats. Methods : Low calcium diets were administrated for 15 days. During the last five days, calcium and/or vitamin D and/or EYP were administrated. The body weights, longitudinal bone growth rates, the heights of growth plates, and bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-2 and insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 expressions were measured using histochemical analysis. Results : Low calcium diets caused the significant reduction in body weight gains and the longitudinal bone growth. The heights of growth plates and the expressions of BMP-2 and IGF-1 showed the impairment of body growth as well. Calcium and/or vitamin D administration could not significantly increase the longitudinal bone growth. However, calcium, vitamin D, and EYP administration significantly increased the bone growth, the growth plate height, and BMP-2 and IGF-1 expressions. Conclusions : These results suggest that EYP enhances the longitudinal bone growth in the calcium and/or vitamin D deficiency and it could be a promising agent for the treatment of children suffering from malnutrition.
Calcium is well known role for signal transduction in a neuron cell. Various processes and parameters modulate the intracellular calcium signaling process. A number of experimental and theoretical attempts are reported in the literature for study of calcium signaling in neuron cells. But still the role of various processes, components and parameters involved in calcium signaling is still not well understood. In this paper an attempt has been made to develop two dimensional finite element model to study calcium diffusion in neuron cells. The JRyR, JSERCA and JLeak, the exogenous buffers like EGTA and BAPTA, and diffusion coefficients have been incorporated in the model. Appropriate boundary conditions have been framed. Triangular ring elements have been employed to discretized the region. The effect of these parameters on calcium diffusion has been studied with the help of numerical results.

The Undaria pinnatifida collected in the waters of Dongbaek Island were grouped into young and adult ones and calcium and iron contents of each were analyzed by parts, i.e., separately for blade, stripe, and sporophyll by potassium permanganate titration method and spectrophotometric method respectively (O-phenanthrolin used). The results showed that the blades contain higher percentage of calcium than other parts both in young and adult seaweeds and that proportionately twice as much iron is contained in the blades than in the stripes.
This study was performed to determine the effect of three different concentrations of soy-isoflavones on calcium and phosphorus balance in either sham-operated or ovariectomized female rats. Seventy-two 16-week old Sprague-Dawley rats underwent sham operation or bilateral ovariectomy. They were provided diets containing different levels of soy iso-flavones for 6 weeks: 50 ppm (Jow isoflavone intake; LI) , 250 ppm (medium isoflavone intake; MI) and 500 ppm (high isoflavone intake; HI). The subsequent fecal and urinary excretions of calcium and phosphorus were then measured. In the sham-operated rats, body weight gains and food efficiency ratio of the MI and HI groups were significantly lower than the control group while food intake was not different. However, there was no significant difference in the ovariectomized rats. The fecal excretion of calcium was significantly lower in the LI, MI and HI groups than the control group in sham operated rats, and significantly lower in the HI group than the control group in ovariectomized rats. Also, apparent ab-sorption rate of calcium and phosphorus did not show any significant difference among groups. Urinary excretion of calcium and phosphorus was significantly lower in the HI group than the LI group in the sham-operated rats. Urinary excretion of calcium was significantly higher in the control ovariectomized rats than in the control sham-operated rats. Retention of calcium and phosphorus did not show any significant difference in both groups. From the above result, we see that isoflavone intake increases calcium retention through an increase in calcium absorption and also suppresses the increase of calcium excretion in urine in ovariectomy. Therefore, it is suggested that isoflavone intake is recommended for menopausal women who experience sharp bone loss due to the decrease in estrogen honnone.

The influence of builders on calcium deposition on the fabric was studied by laundering the cotton fabric with sodium carbonate, sodium metasilicate, sodium tripolyphosphate and built detergents in hard water. The laundry variables were: 1) Washing cycles: 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 cycles. 2) Water hardness: 100 ppm, 150 ppm, 200 ppm and 300 ppm. 3) Builders: $Na_2\;CO_3,\;Na_2\;SiO_3$ and STPP. 4) Detergents: Na-DBS, $Na-DBS+Na_2CO_3,\;Na-DBS+Na_2\;SiO_3,\;Na-DBS+STPP,\;Na-DBS+Na_2\;CO_3+STPP$, and $Na-DBS+Na_2\;SiO_3+STPP$. The fabric was washed for 15 minutes at 23+$1^{\circ}C$ in a washing machine(Gold Star WP 3007) under the similar condition with those of home laundering, and rinsed 3 times in the same water hardness for 5 minutes. The calcium deposits on the fabric was determined by EDTA-BACK titration methods. The results of this study were as follows: 1) The amount of calcium deposits on the fabric was increased with increasing wash cycles. This deposit was due to the build up of insoluble calcium carbonate. 2) As the water hardness increased, the amount of calcium deposits on the fabric was increased. 3) Alkaline builders, such as, $Na_2CO_3$ and $Na_2SiO_3$, promoted calcium deposition on the fabric, however STPP prevented calcium deposition on the fabric. 4) Fabric laundered with $Na-DBS+Na_2CO_3$ showed the highest calcium deposits on the fabric, and decreased with the order of $Na_2CO_3$, $Na-DBS+Na_2SiO_3$, and Na-DBS. And fabrics washed with phosphate-built detergents showed a small amount of calcium deposition.
