  • The anchovy scoop net fishery is one of the important in the South sea and coastal of Jeju of Korea. They are using incandescent lamp as a fishing lamp at night to gather anchovy shoals in the water surface. Fishing lamp (AC 100 V 500 W$\times$2~3 or AC 100 V 1 ㎾$\times$1) was installed at 1 m ahead of the prow and 1.5 m height from the water surface. The fishing lamp let anchovy shoals rise to the water surface and are attracted to bag net. On this study, the distribution of submarine illumination of 1㎾ and 2 ㎾ incandescent lamp were analyzed and discussed to investigate the ability of fishing lamp which can gather anchovy shoals effectively. The submarine illumination of incandescent lamp showed peak in wave length 690 nm. The relationship between submarine illumination (L) and water depth (Z) of 1 ㎾ and 2 ㎾ incandescent lamp in vertical light is 1 ㎾ : L = 3851. 9 $e^{-1.4587Z}$ $R^2$=0.9952 2 ㎾ : L= 8211.9 $e^{-1.2852Z}$ $R^2$=0.9977 The submarine illumination of 2 ㎾ incandescent lamp of 0~4 m layers appeared to be 3 to 4 times higher than 1 ㎾ incandescent lamp, and in more deep layers than 6 m appeared to be equal value of each lamp. The light of incandescent lamp (1 ㎾) pass through much better into vertical direction than horizontal, and submarine illumination of 20 m layers was 1.0 l$\chi$. Therefore, fishing lamp power is thought that 1 ㎾ incandescent lamp is more efficient than 2 ㎾ to gather anchovy shoals in depth of 15~20 m to water surface.

  • In this study, we conducted field surveys to investigate and analyze species and length composition of catch from gape net with wings being set in two areas - Masari, Supomri - located in southern part of Jin-do for understanding fishing characteristics of gape net with wings fishery from March to September of 2011. And with those results, we attempted to propose fishery management strategy to harvest fisheries resources continuously. Catch obtained from field surveys comprised total 78 species, which accounted for 53 species of fish, 20 species of crustacean, 4 species of cephalopod and one of polychaete. As to species composition in weight, it showed that there was 88.5% for pisces, 9.0% for cephalopoda and 2.5% for crustacea. As to catch specifics by area, there was 36 species (596,891 individual, 456,551g) of pisces, 17 species (35,815 individual, 12,909g) of crustacea and 3 species (2,876 individual, 3,004g) of cephalopoda in Masari area. In Supumri area, there was 41 species (396,898 individual, 281,457g) of pisces, 15 species (16,113 individual, 7,772g) of crustacea and 4 species (6,792 individual, 72,329g) of cephalopoda and one polychaeta (36 individual, 11g). Catch of anchovy by month recorded on high level on June, July, September in both areas. When considering size composition by month, it was found that new populations recruit to these fishing grounds on June and September. Most of bycatch species including hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus), dotted gizzard shad (Konosirus punctatus), conger eel (Leptocephalous), Pacific sandlance (Ammodytes personatus), horse mackerel (Trachurus japonicus) were juvenile, and grass puffer (Takifugu niphobles), Kammal thryssa (Thryssa kammalensis), Japanese sardinella (Sardinella zunasi) were also small in size. As a result, it is considered that gape net with wings fishery which is likely to catch juvenile needs to be set fishing prohibit period for conserving above stocks during the period excluding main fishing periods of anchovy or fisheries management such as expanding mesh size for preventing juvenile catch.

  • The Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus is a widespread species in the western North Pacific and major fishery resource. To understand the spatio-temporal variation of anchovy prey items in the coastal waters of southern Korea, the stomach contents of anchovy and the structure of the zooplankton community were analysed at three sites (Jindo, Yeosu and Tong-yeong) from July 2011 to February 2012. The main prey items in Yeosu and Jindo were cyprid stage of barnacle (>35%) and copepod Calanus sinicus (>22%) in July, respectively, while, predominant ones in Tongyeong were small copepods, Paracalanus parvus s.l. (41%) and Corycaeus affinis (22%). During this period, the dominant zooplankton were cladoceran Evadne tergestina (39%) in Yeosu, small copepod, P. parvus s.l. (28%) in Jindo and cladoceran E. tergestina (14%) in Tongyeong. The dominant prey items were barnacle larvae and copepods in summer, phytoplankton and Pseudodiaptomus marinus in autumn and P. parvus s.l. and cold water copepod, Centropages abdominalis in winter. Anchovy prefer the prey item C. sinicus (3%) over E. tergestina (39%), which was a dominant species in the catching site in summer. P. marinus (0.5%) and C. abdominalis (0.9%) were preferred over P. parvus s.l. (30%, 21%) in autumn and winter, respectively. Prey items varied with area and season in the coastal waters of southern Korea. These results suggest that the prey selectivity of anchovy showed high flexibility and adaptability in the study waters.

  • In order to survey the conditions of bycatch and discards for a gape net, a series of filed surveys was carried out total 10 surveys on two gape nets operated in the coastal area of Jindo during July to November 2008. The all catches in each survey were measured the body length, weight after sorted species. The analysis of catch data was conducted to separate 'first operation' and 'general operation'. In this study, the first operation defined as hauling the fishing gears that soaked over 10 hours because of setting on the previous day. The general operation means the haul of fishing gears conducted at intervals of one of or two hours after first operation. The bycatch in this study is defined as the other species except for anchovy, and bycatch rate refers to the proportion of bycatch to total catch. From the survey results, the average bycatch rates on first operations were 50% and 51% for Masa-ri and Supum-ri areas in Jindo, respectively. Also, the average bycatch rates on general operation were 2% and 3% for Masa-ri and Supum-ri areas in Jindo, respectively. The proportion of anchovy to total catch caught represented 75.5%. It needs the research on the selective fishing technology to reduce the bycatch on the gape net fishery.

  • The coastal stow net (stow net hereafter) in Korea is one of the major fishing methods for yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactis), ribbon fish (Trichiurus lepturus), and anchovy (Engraulis japonicus). In terms of energy efficiency, the stow net fishery is more competitive than towing fishing gears such as trawl gears. The fishing vessels in stow net fishery have consumed less fossil fuel and also have had less carbon dioxide emission into the atmosphere. however, the stow net fishery is necessary to be regulated due to its increased output of the fleet. Therefore, it is required for fisheries authorities to manage the fishing capacity or fishing power for the assurance of fishery's sustainability. For fisheries management authorities, it is necessary to quantify data related to fishing capacity and fishing power to deploy fishery policy in a sustainable way. In terms of data for decision-making, Data envelopment analysis (DEA) method was conducted to estimate fishing capacity. Fishing power index (FPI) was also applied to calculate relative fishing power to approach the problem in a quantitative way.

  • Two sea survey instruments were introduced: continuous underway fish egg sampler (CUFES) and an airborne light detecting and ranging (LIDAR) for survey of epiplegic fish. We have used CUFES in ichthyoplankton surveys primarily for Pacific sardine (Sardinop sagax) eggs off California since 1996 and it is also being used in many parts of world for sardine and anchovy egg surveys. • Long term changes in winter time(JFM) sea surface temperature(SST) and marine ecosystem of different Korean waters during last five to six decades were illustrated. Fishing intensity with climate-ocean variability(e.g. SST) have been increasing since 1970s in all of the Korean marine waters. Winter SST around Korean waters went to colder regime in early 1980s and after the late 1980s increased gradually. After 1988/89 CRS all of the waterbody started warmer regime and well coincided with the CRS phenomena. Large predatory, small pelagic and crustacean and mollusks abundance were well coincided by the warmer SST regime after 1988/89 CRS and changed the fishery from demersal fishery to pelagic fishery. Ecosystem parameter of Mean Trophic Level(MTL) showed continuous decreasing trend since mid of 1970s which was mostly affected by the increasing of lower trophic level species. Fishing in balance(FIB) index showed increasing pattern since early 1970s to the late of 1970s and from early 1980s it was almost stable until now. Finally wasp-waist population of anchovy and Japanese sardine have a greater impact to the whole MTL since early 1970s.

  • The concern on the greenhouse gas emissions is increasing globally. Especially, the greenhouse gas emission from fisheries is an important issue from the Paris Climate Change Accord in 2015. Furthermore, the Korean government has a plan to reduce the GHG emissions as 4.8% compared to the BAU in fisheries until 2020. However, the investigation on the GHG emissions from Korean fisheries rarely carried out consistently. Therefore, the quantitative analysis of GHG emissions from Korean fishery industry is necessary as a first step to find a relevant way to reduce GHG emissions from fisheries. The purpose of this research is to investigate which degree of GHG emitted from the major offshore fisheries such as offshore gillnet fishery, offshore longline fishery, offshore jigging fishery and anchovy drag net fishery. Here, we calculated the GHG emissions from the fisheries using the Life Cycle Assessment method. The system boundary and input parameters for each process level are defined for the LCA analysis. The fuel use coefficients of the fisheries are also calculated according to the fuel type. The GHG emissions from sea activities by the fisheries will be dealt with. Furthermore, the GHG emissions for the unit weight of fishes are calculated with consideration to the different consuming areas as well. The results will be helpful to understand the circumstances of GHG emissions from Korean fisheries.

  • It is more than half a century since anchovy boat seine has been introduced in Korean fishery to catch anchovies, but the study on it was began in 1970's by the authors. In 1971, the authors carried out an experiment about the net formation of the traditional gear in tow by using model net, and in 1978, about the patti net gear, commercially used in Japan. Now, the authors investigated the new model net, model 79, expecting to be suitable for commercial fishery in Korea, with the strong point of those two gears kept and the weak point of them corrected. The experimental gear was constructed attached the long net pendants to the fore end of extension wing by shortening its length in two-third of the traditional gear. Inside wing was improved so as to show high opening in tow. Rubber bobbins and hanging rings are used to prevent the heavy friction of bosom ground rope against the sea bed. The gear was used to catch anchovies in the commercial fishing ground in the south-eastern coastal waters of Korea, from May to October in 1979. From the experiment, the following results are found. 1. In opening height, the experimented gear was 30 percent greater than the traditional one. 2. It took 3 to 5 minutes for the bosom ground rope to sink from the surface to the sea bed, while 10 to 15 minutes for the traditional gear to do. 3. Ground rope never scooped mud, even in the muddy sea bed. 4. The gear showed better catchability than the traditional gear.

  • Total malonaldehyde(MA) in several dried fishery products (Alaska pollack, anchovy, white bait and squid) was determined by distillation and TBA reaction. In particular, MA in a water extract of dried anchovy was fractionated into bound and free MA on a Sephadex G-10 column. Among the three elution peaks, two peaks were found to be bound MA representing 94.5% of the total MA in the water extract and free MA constituted only a minor peak.
