  • Following a Mediterranean fruit fly outbreak in South Australia, a bait spray program involving the pesticides like malathion(MAL) was carried out. During the application, dermal exposure was considered for the pest controllers wearing PVC gloves. However there is a lack of information about PVC glove performance like break through times and permeation rates with MAL, therefore, a new analytical method for HPLC-UV was developed. A standard permeation test cell was used in this study. From the results of this study, more than 96% solubility of MAL was provided at 30% isopropyl alcohol in distilled water as a collecting media. However, there was significant decomposition of MAL when the solutions were kept at over $50^{\circ}C$ for 2-3 hours. As a mobile phase, 50% acetonitrile water solution (pH 6.0) gave the greater sensitivity compared with other compositions of acetonitrile solution. The arm section of the gloves had shorter breakthrough times and higher permeation rates compared with the palm. There was no malathion solution breakthrough up to 24 hours using the 1% MAL working strength solution. When the temperature was changed from $22{\pm}1^{\circ}C\;to\;37{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, the breakthrough times were decreased by 14.5% on palm and 37.5% on arm, and permeation rates were increased significantly. The findings of this study indicate that further investigations on used gloves, periods of use and varying working conditions like tasks and seasons should be carried out to assess potential worst case scenarios.

  • Until now, several empirical models for assessing the damage due to TNT explosions have been proposed. A set of analytical solutions for the time-dependent radius of an expanding fire-ball after detonation of TNT was obtained by solving the continuity, Euler (momentum), and energy equations with a "polytrope" assumption at the fire-ball center. The shock waves developed from the rapid expansion of a fire-ball under water were obtained by using the KirkwoodBBethe hypothesis. The calculated period of bubble oscillation and the maximum radius of the bubble resulting from the fire-ball due to a violent underwater TNT explosion were in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • The concentration of veterinary antibiotics in aqueous and sediment matrices was measured in agricultural irrigation ditches bordering several animal-feeding operations (AFOs) and then compared to its concentration in the watershed. Analytical determination in aqueous samples was based on solid phase extraction (SPE) and appropriate buffer solutions were used to extract residuals in sediment samples. Separation and detection of extracted veterinary antibiotics were performed with high performance liquid chromatograph tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS/MS). In general, higher concentrations of antibiotic were observed in the aqueous phase of irrigation ditches, with the highest concentration of erythromycin hydrochloride (ETM-$H_2O$) of $0.53{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, than in aqueous watershed samples. In contrast, higher concentrations were measured in river sediment than in irrigation ditch sediment with the highest concentration of oxytetracycline of $110.9{\mu}g\;kg^{-1}$. There was a high calculated correlation ( > 0.95) between precipitation and measured concentration in aqueous samples from the irrigation ditches for five of the ten targeted veterinary antibiotics, indicating that surface runoff could be an important transport mechanism of veterinary antibiotics from field to environment. Further, environmental loading calculation based on measured concentrations in aqueous samples and flow information clearly showed that irrigation ditches were 18 times greater than river. This result suggests the likelihood that veterinary antibiotics can be transported via irrigation ditches to the watershed. The transport via surface runoff and likely environmental loading via irrigation ditches examined in this study helps identify the pathway of veterinary antibiotics residuals in the environment.

  • The performance of wave control by a surface-mounted horizontal membrane is analyzed in the frame of linear potential theory. To employ the eigenfunction expansion method, the fluid domain is divided into two regions i.e. region without membrane and membrane-covered region. By matching the each solutions at boundaries of adjacent regions, the complete solution is obtained. The present analytical method solving the scattering problem directly gives the same results as Cho and Kim(1998)'s method solving the diffraction and the radiation problem separately. To verify the developed model, the model test with a surface-mounted horizontal membrane is conducted at the wave tank(36m${\times}$0.91m${\times}$l.22m). The analytic results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The reflection and transmission coefficients are investigated according to the change of membrane tension, length and incident frequencies.

  • Since heavy metal pollution is a significant global environmental problem and very dangerous to human health, the improved methods for detecting heavy metals are required recently. Colorimetric chemosensors are now considered as one of the most effective analytical method used in the environment monitoring. New direct dyes having the function of colorimetric chemosensors were synthesized. When metal ions such as $Al^{3+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, $Cr^{3+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Fe^{2+}$, $Fe^{3+}$, $Hg^{2+}$, $Li^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Na^+$, $Ni^{2+}$, $Pb^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ were added each solution of new direct dyes, the color of solution was changed and can be easily detected with naked eyes without expensive experimental equipment such as atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS) or inductively coupled plasma?mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). The new benzidine analogues were diazotized and reacted with couplers such as H-acid, J-acid, Chromotropic acid, Nevill-winther acid and gamma acid to synthesize new direct dyes. The structures of the new direct dyes were confirmed by high resolution mass spectrometer (FAB ionization) and evaluated with UV-Vis spectroscopy. The UV-VIS spectroscopy was measured for the dye solutions by adding various concentrations of metal ions. It was observed that the absorbance in UV-Vis spectra was changed as the heavy metal ions were added.

  • BACKGROUND: This study was performed to develop a single residue analytical method for new herbicide metazosulfuron in crops. METHODS AND RESULTS: Brown rice, apple, mandarin, Kimchi cabbage and soybean were selected as representative crops, and clean-up system, partition solvent and extraction solvent were optimized. Instrumental limit of quantitation (ILOQ), linearity of calibration curve and method limit of quantitation (MLOQ) were determined based on the chromatography and whole procedures. For recovery tests, brown rice, apple, mandarin, Kimchi cabbage and soybean samples were macerated and fortified with metazosulfuron standard solution at three levels (MLOQ, 10 MLOQ and 100 MLOQ). And then those were extracted with acetonitrile, concentrated, and partitioned with ethyl acetate. Then the extracts were concentrated again and cleaned-up through $NH_2$ (aminopropyl) SPE cartridge with acetone : dichloromethane (1% acetic acid) (20 : 80, v/v) before concentration and analysis with HPLC. CONCLUSION(S): ILOQ of metazosulfuron was 2 ng (S/N${\geq}$10) and good linearity was achieved between 0.05 and 12.5 mg/Kg of metazosulfuron standard solutions, with coefficients of determination of 0.9999. MLOQ was 0.02 mg/Kg. Good recoveries from 74.1 to 116.9% with coefficients of variation (C.V.) of less than 10% were obtained, regardless of sample type, which satisfies the criteria of Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA). Those results were reconfirmed with LC-MS (SIM). The method established in this study is simple, economic and efficient to be applied to most of crops as an official and general method for residue analysis of metazosulfuron.

  • In this paper, the vibro-acoustic behaviors of vibrational cylindrical shells are investigated by using structural intensity approach. The reducing interior noise method for vibrating cylindrical shells is proposed by altering and redistributing the structural intensity through changing the damping property of the structure. The concept of proposed novel method is based on the properties of structural intensity distribution on cylindrical shells under different load and damping conditions, which can reflects power flow in the structures. In the study, the modal formulas of structural intensity are developed for the steady state vibration of cylindrical shell structures. The detailed formulas of structural intensity are derived by substituting modal quantities, in which the effect of main parameters such as weight coefficients and distribution functions on structure intensity are analyzed and discussed. Numerical simulations are first carried out based on the structural intensity analytical solutions of modal formulas. Through simulating the coupling vibration and acoustical radiation problems of cylindrical shell, the relationship between vibro-acoustic and structural intensity distribution is derived. We find that for cylindrical shell, by properly arranging damping conditions, the structural intensity can be efficiently changed and further the noise property can be improved. The proposed methodology has important implications and potential applications in the vibration and noise control of fuselage structure.

  • In this study, the present deployment of the multiple wave energy converters (WECs) in a floating wind-wave hybrid power generation platform was estimated considering the interaction effect among WEC buoys. The interaction processes of multiple buoys were very complex, since scattered and radiated waves from each buoy affected the others in the array. The interaction analysis of the diffraction and radiation problem by the array of WECs was applied by matched eigenfunction expansion method (MEEM). The analytical solutions were compared with the results of numerical calculation based on WAMIT. The overall performance of 24 WECs installed in the hybrid power generation platform was evaluated by the q-factor representing the interaction effect among buoys.

  • This work investigates a new type of quasi-3D hyperbolic shear deformation theory is proposed in this study to discuss the statics and free vibration of functionally graded porous plates resting on elastic foundations. Material properties of porous FG plate are defined by rule of the mixture with an additional term of porosity in the through-thickness direction. By including indeterminate integral variables, the number of unknowns and governing equations of the present theory is reduced, and therefore, it is easy to use. The present approach to plate theory takes into account both transverse shear and normal deformations and satisfies the boundary conditions of zero tensile stress on the plate surfaces. The equations of motion are derived from the Hamilton principle. Analytical solutions are obtained for a simply supported plate. Contrary to any other theory, the number of unknown functions involved in the displacement field is only five, as compared to six or more in the case of other shear and normal deformation theories. A comparison with the corresponding results is made to verify the accuracy and efficiency of the present theory. The influences of the porosity parameter, power-law index, aspect ratio, thickness ratio and the foundation parameters on bending and vibration of porous FG plate.

  • This paper presents a paper-based concentration gradient chip to analyze colorimetric glucose assay. The paper-based concentration gradient chip was fabricated through a wax patterning technique that can design the fluidic channel by selectively printing hydrophobic and hydrophilic areas. Afterwards, glucose and dilution solutions were loaded into the inlet of a concentration gradient chip and each solution was then mixed sequentially at mixing channel. Finally, concentration gradient was formed at each outlet of the chip. To measure the glucose concentration of the solution in outlets, we conducted colorimetric glucose assay with fixed concentration of glucose solution (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 mM) and obtained normalized intensity. Subsequently, glucose concentrations of the outlets were calculated by substituting the normalized intensity to linear regression function based on the normalized intensity of fixed glucose concentration. Finally, the concentration gradient of glucose was formed on the chip with the result of colorimetric assay. The concentration gradient paper chip has the potential to accurately analyze unknown glucose concentration.
