  • This paper is focused on the formulation of explicit closed-form functions describing the performance measures of the general flexible manufacturing system (FMS)according to the strategy of material handling system(MHS). the performance measures such as the production rate, the production lead-time and the utilization rate of the general FMS are expressed, respectively, as the explicit closed-form functions of the part processing time, the service rate of the material handling system (MHS) and the number of machine tools in the FMS. For this, the gensral FMS is presented as a generalized stochastic Petri net model, then, the moment generating function (MGF) based approach is applied to obtain the steady-state probabity formulation. Based on the steady-state formulation, the explicit closed-form functions for performance measures of the probability FMS can be obtained. Finally, the analytical results are compared with the Petri net simulation results to verify the validity of the suggested method. The paper is of significance in the sense that it provides a comprehensive formula for performance measures of the FMS even to the industry engineers and academic reademic resuarchers who have no background on Markov chain analysis method or Petrinet modeling

  • Zingiberis Rhizoma (ZR, Zingiberaceae) is one of the foods for a long time and contains various biological activities including anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-platelet activities. The present study was to compare the amount of 6-gingerol in the 70% ethanol extracts of non-processed ZR and processed ZR by roasting using a high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with photodiode array detector. The 6-gingerol was separated on a Gemini $C_{18}$ analytical column ($5{\mu}m$, $4.6{\times}250mm$) using two mobile phase consisting of distilled water and acetonitrile. The flow rate was 1.0 mL/min and injection volume was $10{\mu}L$. In non-processed ZR sample, the amount of the 6-gingerol was 0.43% and the amount of the marker compound in processed ZR samples by roasting were 0.16-0.55%.

  • In present study, we conducted quantification analysis of phenolic compound (paeonol), monoterpene glycoside (paeoniflorin), and tannin ((+)-catechin in the 70% ethanol extracts of non-processed Moutan Radicis Cortex (MRC) and processed MRC by roasting using a high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode array detector. Three marker components were separated on Gemini $C_{18}$ analytical column and the column was maintained at $40^{\circ}C$ using two mobile phase system consisting of 1.0% (v/v) aqueous acetic acid and 1.0% (v/v) acetic acid in acetonitrile. The flow rate and injection volume were 1.0 mL/min and 10 mL. In non-processed MRC sample, the concentrations of three marker compounds, (+)-catechin, paeoniflorin, and paeonol were 0.20, 1.18, and 2.12%, respectively. On the other hand, the concentrations of the three compounds in processed MRC samples were 0.03-0.24, not detected-1.08, and 0.76-1.82%, respectively.

  • Using the concept of quasi-static decomposition and using three-noded isoparametric locking-free element, this article presents a formulation of the finite element method for Timoshenko beam subjected to spatially different time-dependent motions at supports. To verify the validity of the formulation, three fixed-hinged beams excited by the real seismic motions are examined; one is a slender beam, another is a stocky one, and the other is an intermediate one. The numerical results of time histories of motions of the three beams are compared with corresponding analytical solutions. The internal loads such as bending moment and shearing force at a specific time are also compared with analytic solutions. These comparisons show good agreements. The comparisons between static components of the internal loads and the corresponding total internal loads show that the static components predominate in the stocky beam, whereas the dynamic components predominate in the slender one. Thus, the total internal loads of the stocky beam, which is governed by static components, can be predicted simply by static analysis. Careful numerical experiments indicate that the fundamental frequency of a beam can be used as a parameter identifying such a stocky beam.

  • In order to reduce vibration or to control shape of structures made of metal or composites, piezoelectric materials have been extensively used since their discovery in 1880's. A recent trend is also seen to apply piezoelectric materials to flexible structures made of rubber-like materials. In this paper a non-linear finite element model using updated Lagrangian (UL) approach has been developed for static analysis of rubber-elastic material with surface-bonded piezoelectric patches. A compressible stain energy function has been used for modeling the rubber as hyperelastic material. For formulation of the nonlinear finite element model a twenty-node brick element is used. Four degrees of freedom u, v and w and electrical potential ${\varphi}$ per node are considered as the field variables. PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) patches are applied as sensors/actuators or sensors and actuators. The present model has been applied to bimorph PVDF cantilever beam to validate the formulation. It is then applied to study the smart rubber components under different boundary and loading conditions. The results predicted by the present formulation are compared with the analytical solutions as well as the available published results. Some results are given as new ones as no published solutions available in the literatures to the best of the authors' knowledge.

  • The finite element based lattice Boltzmann method (FELBM) has been developed to model complex fluid domain shapes, which is essential for studying fluid-structure interaction problems in commercial nuclear power systems, for example. The present study addresses a new finite element formulation of the lattice Boltzmann equation using a general weighted residual technique. Among the weighted residual formulations, the collocation method, Galerkin method, and method of moments are used for finite element based Lattice Boltzmann solutions. Different finite element geometries, such as triangular, quadrilateral, and general six-sided solids, were used in this work. Some examples using the FELBM are studied. The results were compared with both analytical and computational fluid dynamics solutions.

  • Response spectra of earthquake ground motions are important in the earthquake-resistant design and reliability analysis of structures. The formulation of the response spectrum in the frequency domain efficiently computes and evaluates the stochastic response spectrum. The frequency information of the excitation can be described using different functional forms. The shapes of the calculated response spectra of the excitation show strong magnitude and site dependency, but weak distance dependency. In this paper, to compare the effect of the earthquake ground motion variables, the contribution of these sources of variability to the response spectrum's uncertainty is calculated by using a stochastic analysis. The analytical results show that earthquake source factors and soil condition variables are the main sources of uncertainty in the response spectra, while path variables, such as distance, anelastic attenuation and upper crust attenuation, have relatively little effect. The presented formulation of dynamic structural response in frequency domain based only on the frequency information of the excitation can provide an important basis for the structural analysis in some location that lacks strong motion records.

  • The reliable prediction of elastic vibrations of wetted complex structures, as ships, tanks, offshore structures, propulsion components etc. represent a theoretical and numerical demanding task due to fluid-structure interaction. The paper presented is addressed to the vibration analysis by a combined FE-BE-procedure based on the added mass concept utilizing a direct boundary integral formulation of the potential fluid problem in interior and exterior domains. The discretization is realized by boundary element collocation method using conventional as well as infinite boundary element formulation with analytical integration scheme. Particular attention is devoted to modelling of interior problems with both several separate or communicating fluid domains as well as thin-walled structures wetted on both sides. To deal with this specific kind of interaction problems so-called "virtual" boundary elements in areas of cut outs are placed to satisfy the kinematical conditions in partial connected fluid domains existing in realistic tank systems. Numerical results of various theoretical and practical examples demonstrate the performance of the BE-methodology presented.

  • A high precision shear deformable triangular element has been proposed for bending analysis of triangular plate. The element has twelve nodes at the three sides and four nodes inside the element. Initially the element has thirty-five degrees of freedom, which has been reduced to thirty by eliminating the degrees of freedom of the internal nodes through static condensation. Plates having different boundary conditions, side ratios (b/a) and thickness ratios (h/a = 0.001, 0.1 and 0.2) have been analyzed using the proposed shear locking free element. Concentrated and uniformly distributed transverse loads have been used for the analysis. The formulation is made based on first order shear deformation theory. For validation of the present element and formulation few results of thin triangular plate have been compared with the analytical solutions. Results for thick plate have been presented as new results.
