  • Damage by high-speed impact fracture is a dominant mode of failure in several applications of concrete structures. Numerical modelling can play a crucial role in understanding and predicting complex fracture processes. The commonly used mesh-based Finite Element Method has difficulties in accurately modelling the high deformation and disintegration associated with fracture, as this often distorts the mesh. Even with careful re-meshing FEM often fails to handle extreme deformations and results in poor accuracy. Moreover, simulating the mechanism of fragmentation requires detachment of elements along their boundaries, and this needs a fine mesh to allow the natural propagation of damage/cracks. Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is an alternative particle based (mesh-less) Lagrangian method that is particularly suitable for analysing fracture because of its capability to model large deformation and to track free surfaces generated due to fracturing. Here we demonstrate the capabilities of SPH for predicting brittle fracture by studying a slender concrete structure (column) under the impact of a high-speed projectile. To explore the effect of the projectile material behaviour on the fracture process, the projectile is assumed to be either perfectly-elastic or elastoplastic in two separate cases. The transient stress field and the resulting evolution of damage under impact are investigated. The nature of the collision and the constitutive behaviour are found to considerably affect the fracture process for the structure including the crack propagation rates, and the size and motion of the fragments. The progress of fracture is tracked by measuring the average damage level of the structure and the extent of energy dissipation, which depend strongly on the type of collision. The effect of fracture property (failure strain) of the concrete due to its various compositions is found to have a profound effect on the damage and fragmentation pattern of the structure.

  • Recently, several new methods for the detection of genetic damages in vitro and in vivo based on molecular biological techniques were introduced according to the rapid progress in toxicology combined with cellular and molecular biology. Among these methods, mouse lymphoma thymidine kanase (tk) gene forward mutation assay, single cell gel electrophoresis (comet assay) and transgenic animal and cell line model as a target gene of lac I (Big Blue) and lac Z (Muta Mouse) gene mutation are newly introduced based on molecular toxicological approaches. The mouse lymphoma tk$\^$+/-/ gene assay (MOLY) using L5178Y tk$\^$+/-/ mouse lymphoma cell line is one of the mammalian forward mutation assays, and has many advantages and more sensitive than hprt assay. The target gene of MOLY is a heterozygous tk$\^$+/-/ gene located in 11 chromosome, so it is able to detect the wide range of genetic changes like point mutation, deletion, rearrangement, and mitotic recombination within tk gene or deletion of entire chromosome 11. The comet assay is a rapid, simple, visual and sensitive technique for measuring and analysing DNA breakages in mammalian cells, Also, transgenic animal and cell line models, which have exogenous DNA incorporated into their genome, carry recoverable shuttle vector containing reporter genes to assess endogenous effects or alteration in specific genes related to disease process, are powerful tools to study the mechanism of mutation in vivo and in vitro, respectively. Also in vivo acridine orange supravital staining micronucleus assay by using mouse peripheral reticulocytes was introduced as an alternative of bone marrow micronucleus assay. In this respect, there was an International workshop on genotoxicity procedure (IWGTP) supported by OECD and EMS (Environmental Mutagen Society) at Washington D. C. in March 25-26, 1999. The objective of IWGTP is to harmonize the testing procedures internationally, and to extend to finalization of OECD guideline, and to the agreement of new guidelines under the International Conference of Harmonization (ICH) for these methods mentioned above. Therefore, we introduce and review the principle, detailed procedure, and application of MOLY, comet assay, transgenic mutagenesis assay and supravital staining micronucleus assay.

  • Sand pile is widely used as a ground improvement method. Although the primary purpose of constructing sand pile is accelerating consolidation, composite ground effect also can be gained by constructing sand pile. This study was accomplished to understand composite ground effect on the ground improved by sand piles which were applied as vertical drainage material when area replacement ratio was small relatively. For determining bearing capacities of origin ground and sand piles and analysing interaction between embankment and origin ground, bearing tests and earth pressure monitoring are performed. From the results, it turned out that the contribution of sand pile as a load bearing mechanism is not substantial. However, the bearing capacity of sand pile was increased to sixty percentages when compared with origin ground. The increasement of bearing capacity could be caused the change of consolidation characteristics during the process of consolidation by overburden load. Therefore, the composite ground effects depending on stiffness increasement of sand pile would be estimated as a factor decreasing consolidation settlement.

  • A finite element analysis has been conducted to clarify the behaviour of a single pile in heaving ground related to ground excavation. The numerical analysis has included soil slip at the pile-soil interface, analysing the interaction between the pile and the clay has been studied. The study includes the upward movement of the pile, the relative shear displacement between the pile and the soil and the shear stresses at the interface and the axial force on the pile. In particular, the shear stress transfer mechanism at the pile-soil interface related to a decrease in the vertical soil stress has been rigorously analysed. Due to the reductions in the vertical soil stress after excavation, the relative shear displacement and the shear stress along the pile have been changed. Upward shear stress developed at most part of the pile (Z/L=0.0-0.8), while downward shear stress is mobilized near the pile tip (Z/L=0.8-1.0) resulting in tensile force on the pile, where Z is the pile location and L is the pile length. Some insights into the pile behaviour in heaving ground analysed from the numerical analyses has been reported.

  • As piling works in urban area are increasing, SIP which has low noise & vibration piling method takes the place of driven pile which has good bearing charateristics and is economical. Although SIP has been used far more than 15 years and it's use is increasing year by year, accurate analysis of bearing mechanism of SIP is not enough. So the design of SIP is much more conservative than driven pile. This paper is aimed at analysing the bearing charateristics of 103 SIPs constructed in Korea to give rational design criteria. Research result shows that bearing capacity of SIP is 40% lower than that of driven pile and conservative Meyerhof(20$\bar{N}_b'A_b$) method produced closer result to load test results than any other design method. And this result shows that in order to use optimised design criteria for the economical SIP design, quality control criteria must be settled down to produce high bearing capacity.

  • The elution characteristics of rare earth elements in $NH^{4+}$ form cation exchange resin had been investigated. Elution were performed varing the loading amount, column diameter, column length and eluent pH. Analysing the chemical species contained in each effluent, elution mechanisms of rare earth elements and the separation of rare earth elements in monazite could be understood. The resolution values of adjacent rare earth elements were improved increasing rare earths adsorption amount wfith the same column within it's exchange capacity. With $NH^{4+}$ resin form, column length does not affect on the resolution values and retention time of rare earth elements and the rare earth-EDTA complex were not adsorbed on $NH^{4+}$ resin form. pH of eluent affected on the reactivities between rare earth elements and EDTA. Decreasing eluent pH, resolution values of adjacent rare earth elements were increased while increasing elution time.

  • The taxonomic status of Moroco Jagowskii and M oxycephalus a pair of sibling species inhabiting in Korean fresh waters, has been unclear up to date. Recently a sympatric area of these species was found (Kang, 1987). The purpose of this study was to clarify their specific status by analysing specimens collected from the sympatric area of these species. Isozyme analysis and morphometric comparison were performed. Among 26 loci screened 6 loci (Aco, Est-2, E-X, Gk-3, Ipo, Me) showed fixed allelic difference between them and these loci could be used as genetic markers to distinguish them. Isozyme analysis indicates that no hybridization occurs and therefore it is assumed that isolating mechanism is completed and they are distinct species. The mean number of scales above lateral line (SAL) of M Jagowskii and M oxycephalus at sympatric area was 24.93 $\pm$1.95 and 17.33$\pm$0.72 respectively, and it seems as the result of character displacement. A finer microhabitat segregation between them is noticed. M oxycephalus is found along the effluent streams whereas M lagowskii is distributed mostly in the main stream at sympatric area.

  • Numerous bio-digital contents have been produced by new technology using biochip and others for analyzing early chemical-induced genes. These contents have little meaning by themselves, and so they should be modified and extracted after consideration of biological meaning. These include genomics, transcriptomics, protenomics, metabolomics, which combined into omics. Omics tools could be applied into toxicology, forming a new field of toxicogenomics. It is possible that approach of toxicogenomics can estimate toxicity more quickly and accurately by analyzing gene/protein/metabolite profiles. These approaches should help not only to discover highly sensitive and predictive biomarkers but also to understand molecular mechanism(s) of toxicity, based on the development of analysing technology. Furthermore, it is important that bio-digital contents should be obtained from specific cells having biological events more than from whole cells. Taken together, many bio-digital contents should be analyzed by careful calculating algorism under well-designed experimental protocols, network analysis using computational algorism and related profound databases.

  • In this study, species resistant to forest fire were extracted from high trees through an investigation of combustion mechanism. Here, the average flameless ignition temperatures of living leaves, branches and barks of oak were respectively, $365^{\circ}C$, $440^{\circ}C$ and $435^{\circ}C$, and the average flameless ignition temperatures of living leaves, branches, barks and cones of pine tree were respectively, $320^{\circ}C$, $405^{\circ}C$, $435^{\circ}C$ and $363^{\circ}C$. It shows that generally, pine tree has a lower flameless ignition temperature than oak and thus, has a relatively high risk of flameless ignition. When comparing risk of fire depending on ignition characteristics, Quercus serrata had a low risk of stem fire, and Quercus acutissima and Quercus serrata had a low risk of crown fire, as well. When analysing risk of fire depending on a duration of flame, also, Quercus dentata had a low risk of stem fire, and Quercus variabilis Blume had a low risk of crown fire too. Lastly, when comparing risk of fire, according to heat release rates, Quercus acutissima had a low risk of stem fire, and Quercus acutissima and Quercus dentata had a low risk of crown fire, as well. In conclusion, it was observed that as fire-resistant species, Quercus serrata and Quercus dentata have a low risk of ignition, Quercus variabilis Blume has a short duration of flame after discharging ignition when a forest fire occurs, and Quercus acutissima, Pinus Rigida and Antipathes japonica Brook have low heat release rates.

  • In this study, waves and currents observed by acoustic AWAC, VECTOR and Aquadopp Profiler in Anmok coastal waters were analysed to account for the variability of wave and current and to understand the mechanism of sediment transport generated by wave-induced current in the surf-zone. The monthly variation of wave and residual currents were analysed and processed with long-term observed AWAC data at station W1, located at the water depth of about 18m measured during from February 2015 to September 2016. Wave-induced currents were also analysed with intensive field measurements such as wave, current, suspended sediment, and bathymetry data observed at the surf-zone during in winter and summer. The statistical result of wave data shows that high waves coming from NNE and NE in winter (DEC-FEB) are dominant due to strong winds from NE. But in the other season waves coming from NE and ENE are prevalent due to the seasonal winds from E and SE. The residual currents with southeastern direction parallel to the shoreline are dominant throughout a year except in winter showing in opposite direction. The speed of ebb-dominant southeastern residual currents decreasing from surface to the bottom is strong in summer and fall but weak in winter and spring. By analysing wave-induced current, we found that cross-shore current were generated by swell waves mainly in winter with incoming wave direction about $45^{\circ}$ normal to the shoreline. Depending on the direction of incoming waves, longshore currents in the surf-zone were separated to southeastern and northwestern flows in winter and summer respectively. The variation of observed currents near crescentic bars in the surf-zone shows different direction of longshore and cross-shore currents depending on incoming waves implying to the reason of beach erosion generating the beach cusp and sandbar migration during high waves at Anmok.
