  • The analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is an important component in various fields of sensor signal processing. This paper presents an expandable flash analog-to-digital converter (E-flash ADC) for sensor signal processing using a comparator, a subtractor, and a multiplexer (MUX). The E-flash ADC was simulated and designed in $0.35-{\mu}m$ standard complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. For operating the E-flash ADC, input voltage is supplied to the inputs of the comparator and subtractor. When the input voltage is lower than the reference voltage, it is outputted through the MUX in its original form. When it is higher than the reference voltage, the reference voltage is subtracted from the input value and the resulting voltage is outputted through the MUX. Operation of the MUX is determined by the output of the comparator. Further, the output of the comparator is a digital code. The E-flash ADC can be expanded easily.

  • Low-cost and automated isolux diagram measurement system are investigated. The system is constructed with illuminance measurement array, analog multiplexer, A/D converter and 16-bit microcomputer. The experimental results show good agreement with the measured illuminance values. Decreasing the measure-spacing, the more accurate diagram can be obtained.

  • Due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic, various methods have been devised to prevent infections caused by physical contact. Among them, a non-contact button was developed to prevent infections in elevators, where many contacts occur in daily life. In this study, an active shield type capacitance sensor is used to detect changes in capacitance when a finger approaches. There is no static power consumption, and the relatively expensive ADC and MCU are reduced to one by sensing buttons every time using analog switches. In addition to the elevator buttons, this technology is expected to replace push-type buttons that many people contact in everyday life.

  • In digital TV broadcasting, such as terrestrial, cable, satellite, and IPTV, the head-end of digital TV broadcasting has a more complicated transmission structure than that of analog TV broadcasting. Furthermore, digital TV broadcasting has a feature that supports multiplex models, such as Multiple Program Transport Stream (MPTS). Therefore, the purpose of our work was to design and examine a more efficient new system of emergency alert message transmission to support the digital TV broadcasting environments. Digital TV broadcasting is the IP generation or RF transmission of 8-VSB, QAM, and QPSK modulated through a multiplexer or re-multiplexer multiplexed stream as a MPEG-2 Transport Stream after content encoding. The new system proposed in this paper transmits an emergency alert message without scrambling after replacing the PID and payload of the -packet with the message prototype in the TS stream from the multiplexer. If we need to transmit an emergency alert message under digital TV broadcasting services, then the receiver first checks the PID of each packet in the TS stream for the emergency alert message. Next, if a packet is determined to be an emergency alert message, then the set-top box displays the message on the TV screen using its function of On Screen Display, or the PC based software displays the message on the monitor screen using its function of overlay with user interface if the packet is found to be an emergency alert message. We have designed an emergency alert message protocol and a system model. By experiments and analysis of the system, we concluded that the system achieved efficiency and the ability to send and receive emergency alert messages using the system under different digital TV broadcasting service environments.

  • In this paper, a $4{\times}32$-channel neural recording system capable of acquiring neural signals is introduced. Four 32-channel neural recording ICs, complex programmable logic devices (CPLDs), a micro controller unit (MCU) with USB interface, and a PC are used. Each neural recording IC, implemented in $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS technology, includes 32 channels of analog front-ends (AFEs), a 32-to-1 analog multiplexer, and an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The mid-band gain of the AFE is adjustable in four steps, and have a tunable bandwidth. The AFE has a mid-band gain of 54.5 dB to 65.7 dB and a bandwidth of 35.3 Hz to 5.8 kHz. The high-pass cutoff frequency of the AFE varies from 18.6 Hz to 154.7 Hz. The input-referred noise (IRN) of the AFE is $10.2{\mu}V_{rms}$. A high-resolution, low-power ADC with a high conversion speed achieves a signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) of 50.63 dB and a spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of 63.88 dB, at a sampling-rate of 2.5 MS/s. The effectiveness of our neural recording system is validated in in-vivo recording of the primary somatosensory cortex of a rat.

  • We have fabricated a planar lightwave circuit (PLC) hybrid-integrated optical sub-assembly of a triplexer using a thin film filter (TFF)-attached wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) and photodiode (PD) carriers. Two types of TFFs were attached to a diced side of a silica-terraced PLC platform, and the PD carriers with a $45^{\circ}$ mirror on which pin-PDs were bonded were assembled with the platform. A clear transmitter eye-pattern and minimum receiver sensitivity of -24.5 dBm were obtained under 1.25 Gb/s operation for digital applications, and a second-order inter-modulation distortion (IMD2) of -70 dBc was achieved for an analog receiver.

  • In this paper, the multi-sensor signal processing IC is designed. It consists of an analog multiplexer for selection of multi-sensor signals, active filters for noise rejection and signal amplification, and a sample and hold circuit for interface with digital signal processing. By implementing these circuits with CMOS transistors, integration, low power dissipation and miniaturization of the total signal processing system have been made possible.

  • The IOVMM(Incoherent Optical Vector Matrix Multiplier) is constructed, which can process much information very fast by incogerent light source, and its experimental results are compared with the theoretical values. The input vector and matirx elements are limited to the positive number in this paper. The input vector is made by the LED array and the matrix is encoded on the film by the area modulation method. The result of the vector-matrix multiplication is detected by the photodiode array through the lens system. The analog multiplexer is used for looking at output signal on one channel.
