  • Berchemia berchemiaefolia (BB) are climbing plants or small to medium-sized trees that live in Africa, Asia and America. We performed the present study to investigate whether oral administration of Berchemia berchemiaefolia extract (BBE) protects SD rats from pain. The SD rat experimental groups were divided into four groups. Two of the animal model groups were fed on BBE (200 mg/kg or 100 mg/kg). We performed oral acute toxicity test to determine the optimal oral dose of BBE. To explore if BBE alleviated pain in the SD rat, we undertook the tail flick latency test and formalin test. Additionally, we conducted the anti-oxidative test. The findings of the present study suggest that Berchemia berchemiaefolia extract exhibits strong antioxidant and analgesic activities.

  • Piroxicam is known to be a new nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug which has anti-inflammatory, antiedema, antigranuloma and analgesic activities through the mechanism of inhibition of prostaglandin synthetase. Clinical survey for piroxicam was carried cut on 40 cases of rheumatoid arthritis and 30 cases of degenerative arthritis who visited University Hospital from Feb. to June, 1979. Following results could be obtained: 1) In rheumatoid and degenerative arthritis, the effect of piroxicam was significant in decrease of joint pain, shortening of duration of morning stiffness, decrease in number of swollen joints, improvement of joint stiffness, decrease of E.S.R., increase of mean grip strength and decrease of articular index. 2) Side effects, almost all in G-I troubles were encountered in 6 cases in 40 cases of rheumatoid arthritis and 4 cases in 30 cases of degenerative arthritis.

  • Bahunia racemosa family, Caesalpiniaceae, is one of the precious resources of the earth. It has played a significant role in human civilization since ancient times. It is tall sized tree growing throughout India, Ceylon, China, and Timor. The different part of this plant contains β-sitosterol and β-amyrin, flavonols (kaempferol and quercetin) and two coumarins (scopoletin and scopolin), tannins etc. Various part of this plant has great pharmacological potential with a great utility and usage as folklore medicine as analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and antimicrobial activity. This review mainly focus on the exclusive review work on the traditional, phytochemical and pharmacological activities of this plant.

  • In order to investigate experimentally the clinical effects of Soumin Kamikop'ungsan (少陰人 加味祛風散) that was prescribed to cure the Wisuhanrihanbyung (胃受寒裡寒病) of Sumin (少陰人) the author experimented various activities of mixed extract from the Sournin Kamikop'ungsan by the method prescribed in the experimental part. The results of the studies were summerized as follows: 1. Analgesic effects by acetic acid and Randall-Sellito experimental method were noted. 2. Anticonvulsive effect to strychnine was noted. 3. The sedation effects by the unbalanced effects of spontaneous momentum by wheel cage method, muscle relaxing action by Rotor rod method were noted. 4. A prolongation of anesthetic time by Thiopental-Na on the mice was noed. 5. The expansion of blood vessels by relaxation of smooth muscle was noted. According to the above results, results of Soumin Kamikop'ungsan on oriental medical references were consistent with the actual experimental results.

  • In order to investigate experimentally the clinical effect of Soyangin-Hyongbangdojoksan (少陽人荊防導赤散) that was prescribed to cure the Bisuhanpyohanbyong (脾受寒表寒病) of Soyangin (少陽人). The author experimented various activities of dried extract from hyongbangdojoksan (Sample-I) and mixed extract of each dried extract of hyongbangdojoksan (Sample-II) by the methods prescribed in the experimental parts. The results summarized as follows. 1. In the acetic acid method experiment, analgesic effect was noted in sample-I & Sample-II. 2. Anti-inflammatory effect on the edema induced by carrageenin was noted in Sample-I. 3. Antipyretic effect is not noted in Sample-I and Sample-II. 4. On urinary volume change and blood electrolyte clearance, the result is not significant, on the contrary the urine electrolyte discharge is effective in Sample-I and Sample-II. According to the above results, the effects based on oriental medical references approximate to the actual experimental results.

  • Ligularia stenocephala has been widely used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of lots of diseases such as asthma, arthritis, and jaundice. In this study, we evaluated the anti-nocicepitve activities of methanolic extract of L. stenocephala (MLS) using various pain models including thermal nociception as well as chemical nociception methods. MLS showed significant increase in latency time in the tail immersion test and hot-plate test. In addition, the number of acetic acid-induced abdominal constrictions was decreased by MLS. MLS also attenuated paw licking time in the formalin test. The combination test using naloxone revealed that the anti-nociceptive properties of MLS was not associated with opioid receptor activation. The present results demonstrate that MLS may possibly used as valuable analgesic agent for the treatment of nociceptive pain.

  • The ubiquitous presence of lactoferrin (LF) receptor in human as reported by the research group of Prof, Bo Lonnerdal, Univ. California, encouraged us to search for the unknown physiological roles of LF. Under the collaboration with Prof. Etsumori Harada, Tottori Univ., and his research group, we have found two novel biological activities of LF as the control of the lipid metabolism and the effect on the central nervous system. Relating to the lipid metabolism, LF could, in animal experiments, reduce triglyceride and total cholesterol both in blood and liver. LF increased plasma HDL-C and lowered LDL-C. In the central nervous system, LF showed anti-nociceptive activity mediated by ${\mu}$-opioid receptor in the rat spinal cord. LF enhanced analgesic action of morphine synergistically via nitric oxide synthesis. LF showed opioid-mediated suppressive effect on distress induced by maternal separation in rat pups.

  • The anti-inflammatory and analgesic actions of Cedrela sinensis, Oenanthe javanica and ARtemisia princeps var. orientalis were carried out. The methanolic extract of Artemisia princeps var. orientalis showed the inhibitory effect on carrageenin-induced edema as well as vascular permeability in mice. And we also found the alagesic activity in these plants.
